Adjustment layers preference ?

got a question about my adjustment layers and I'm not quite sure how to word this so please bare with me if I sound vague. Today whenever I make a new adjustment layer instead of getting a normal adjustment layer it seems connected to the previous layer and has a 90 degree arrow pointing down. I have restarted PS CS 4. I have not trashed my preferences, waiting hoping to learn how to correct it without doing that. Can anyone help me understand what is going on and what this 90 degree arrow is? I have attached a picture with it circled in red to help explain what I'm talking about. Thanks Jeff

The arrow means that the layer below will clip the adjustment layer. If you were to place another layer below your background, and delete some of the background, the clipped adjustment layer would not affect the new layer below. Another way to look at it is the clipped layer will respect the transparency of the layer below.
Command-option-g or layer > create/release clipping mask

Why are the adjustment layers in my actions not working? (mac osx)

I've just 'upgraded' to CC, and noticed that actions that alter Curves or levels adjustment layers do not play back correctly.
The Action itself contains the right steps but nothing happens to the adjustment or the image. I use this a lot for my work and I really need some help

Are these actions you recorded in a previous version of photoshop?
Did you try recording the action(s) in photoshop cc?
Have you installed the 14.1.1 update for photoshop cc?
Does it make any difference if you disable the Generator plugin under Photoshop>Preferences>Plug-Ins>Enable Generator?

Adjustment layers not opening mask anymore

On my laptop I choose an adjustment option and it creates a new layer and layer mask. On the imac it only creates the layer with the adjustment. I have to manually add the mask.
I can't find a preference or setting or anything to get the two to behave the same way.

Inconsistent from Photoshop UI as well as from Actions. And becase I know what will cause them to fail. I can create actions and scripts that I know will work no matter how they are set. The step will work the same way no matter which way the options are set.
For example disable add layer mask you wrote you have no problem doing that. Do a Ctrl+A (select all) then add an levels adjustment layer to the current layer. You will find that the levels adjustment layer is added with a layer mask. Photoshop will work that way in actions and from its UI. So I can record and add adjustment layer and know for sure a layer mask will be added no matter how a user set the fly-out option. I can also use Photoshop menu Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Type. And in its dialog I can Check use previous layer to create clipping mask. The Adjustment layer will be clipped no matter which way the fly-out option is set.
These options breakes Photoshop original design they are bad options and their implementation is poor. Actions and scripts can not set these options. Scripts can not find out how they are set either. You write Plug-ins do you add adjustment layers in any of them?
Without using these bugs automating adjustment layers is hit and miss. You would not know the state of the adjustment layer you would not know if you had to add a layer mask or modify or replace the existing mask. You would not know if the adjustment layer applied to all lower layer or just the previous layer.
Its a good thing you don't use such action for they could have problems....

Adjustment layers turning everything below black

Hi there,
Found I am having an issue with adjustment layers in Premiere CC.
I have created an Adjustment Layer and pull it on top of a clip on my timeline. As soon as I try to apply Lumetri to the adjustment layer, it turns black and ceases to operate as an adjustment layer and more like a black colour matte. It also behaves this way in that, when I decrease the opacity of the adjustment layer, the clip below begins to show through, but clearly not affected by Lumetri.
Any ideas?

Have tried trashing preferences and reinstalling to no avail. Read that a few users have fixed the issue by deleting any opacity keyframes on the AL but I have deactivated key frames altogether on my ALs with no change - the AL just becomes a black solid.
I am also beginning to have chronic kernel panics where my MBP goes white screen and restarts. Nothing in particular seems to be triggering this, it's entirely random.

I do have Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) enabled and I am aware that this can be a common problem but on a brand new MBP with a supposedly supported GPU, I wouldn't expect it.
Any more ideas?

Adjustment Layers Not Functioning

I have Photoshop CS6 and suddenly I am unable to use adjustment layers. I've been using Photoshop for over 15 years, and the procedure has always been the same; create an adjustment layer then click the circle on the left of that layer, and a dialog box appears where the curves, levels and such may be controlled. Clicking on this circle no longer produces the dialog box.

Thanks again Gene. In the past I've had to throw out the prefs file more than once but it's been so long I forgot that. I don't want to upgrade my OS because I've heard this and that about the higher systems. But what plugins would you recommend?
Not to pester you, though. If you don't want to respond I won't pursue it. Keep up your good work.

Adjustment Layers and Photoshop

Is it possible to import adjustment layers from Photoshop to use in a Premiere Pro CS6 timeline? This could open up some options for color grading.

Adjustment layers not editable?

I have just upgraded to CS4 and am trying to add an adjustment layer, but when I click on the icon at the bottom of the palette and select Hue / Saturation I don't get the actual adjustment any more.
All I get is the adjustment layer showing in the layers palette.
I can click on Edit Adjustment... BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. I don't get the adjustment dialogue.
I have tried adding an Adjustment Layer from the Layers menu, but I still miss out the dialog stage and end up with the adjustment in the layers palette but again no way to edit it.
Is there a new way to add adjustment layers?
Is there a new hidden preference somewhere?
I am using a Mac with OS 10.5.7 and a 2 x 2.8 Ghs Quad-Core Intel Xeon MacPro.
Any ideas?

There are some tricks to returning to CS3 behavior. I just use CS3 when I get fed up with the non-modal (or something) brilliance.

Adjustment layers having no effect in CS3

Suddenly, the adjustment layers I am trying to use have no effect. Moving the sliders has no effect. I am puzzled because this came on suddenly.

Detecting adjustment layers

I would like to disable my plugin in the plugins menu if the loaded image contains an adjustment layer. Is there a way in the pipl to tell Photoshop my plugin doesn't support adjustment layers?
I've found that I can detect adjustment layers programmatically by iterating over the ReadLayerDesc linked list, looking at isAdjustor. This will allow me to block load of my plugin, but ideally I'd like to just disable my plugin in the plugins menu.
My plugin targets CS3, CS4, and CS5.

Eraser just stopped functioning in Adjustment Layers?

I frequently use the Eraser tool to selectively modify adjustment layers, mostly Curves layers in Screen mode with low opacity & many strokes. Worked fine yesterday, today no response from Eraser or dodge/burn at any opacity in the layer though Paint & Clone still function normally. All these tools still work on the Background image. I have checked all settings that I can for abnormal values or anything that I may have changed without noticing but nothing detected. Any suggestions please?

Okay, next thing to try: resetting the Photoshop preference file: Hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Opt+Shift as you initiate Photoshop's startup. Select "yes" when asked if you would like to continue with reset.
Edit: just a FYI, you can use a layer mask and the brush tool as opposed to the eraser. It's a much, much less destructive method.

Problems with actions - why can´t I record my changes on adjustement layers

I use Photoshop CC 2014 on OSX 10.7.5.
Today I started to record an action. I added some adjustement layers and did some adjustements. But the action did only record the adding of the adjustement layers, but not the adjustement or the changes I did on those layers.
What happend? The last time I recorded actions it all worked out...

Do you have photoshop cc 2014.2.0?
In photoshop under Help>System Info, the version should be the top line.
I'd reset the photoshop cc 2014 preferences and see if that makes a difference.
Press and hold the Shift+Command+Option keys while starting photoshop
Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the adobe photoshop settings file

Adjustment layers not 'sticking' on animated GIFs

I'm trying to adjust brightness/contrast and saturation over about 30 layers on an animated GIF. Everything looks great until I do a save for web and click on the animate box. At that point, the color/changes drop off completely. It shows up fine when it's just the one layer being shown. And it seems to be showing up on all the layers when I'm in the main edit window. I keep looking and making sure I have the 'this adjustment affects all layers below,' and I do. I even tried saving a GIF with the other setting turned on and I got the same thing.
Anyway, I exported a few GIFs, thinking maybe the adjustment layers would kick in as it saved, but nope. Neither layer saved into the exported GIF.
I'm sure this is just a simple setting I'm missing, but I'm banging my head against the desk at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks! I'm still trying my best to sort out why the adjustment layers drop off when I go to animate the GIF ... BUT I did duplicate the adjustment layers -- one for each frame -- and then clicked on the adjustment layers and selected layer and merged them one at a time and it worked. It's still more tedious than I hoped, but not as tedious as trying to adjust each layer on its own and having to input the same exact settings for each layer.
I would still be interested in anyone else's take/advice on applying adjustments to all the layers in an image at the same time and having it cary through to 'save for web.' Animated GIFs are so simple in theory, but I'm finding them to be absolutely one of the most frustrating and tedious things to try and edit/create.

Forgive me for not looking into your Maya-specific links, but one can automate Photoshop using JavaScript indeed (on Windows also VB, on Mac also AppleScript).
Not everything can be automated naturally, but a lot – and it can really speed up many tasks; and with the »small« repetitive ones like saving copies off of files etc. combining Scripts with Configurator Panels can be especially convenient.

How do I save a stack of adjustment layers that I want to then apply instantly to another image ?

Can anyone help with the following Photoshop question please ?
I've been working on a 16bit image in PS CC on my Mac that has a stack of approximately 15 Adjustment Layers (AL's) which has taken a fair amount of work to put together and then saved as an unflattened PSD. The AL's consist of Curves, Selective Colour, Hue & Sat, Vibrance, Col Bal and Photo Filters with a variety of Masks. All AL's have been renamed with their own unique names.
My question is:
How do I save this stack of 15 AL's, as I want apply them to other similar images that where shot during a motor drive burst either side of the image mentioned above ?
I know I can achieve exactly what I want by dragging all 15 AL's from the original image on to newly opened individual images.
Although this method works absolutely perfectly and is instant I want to be able to somehow apply these AL's in an instantaneous automated way to enable me to deal with the large numbers of images that I want to apply this to.
It appears to be the case that it isn't possible to simply select the complete stack of AL's from the original image, copy them and then paste them into a new image ! If this was possible I would simply create a simple action to deal with it.
I know already that I can create an action to deal with this now, however that entails laboriously retracing what I did to the original image by saving presets to the many AL's, then reloading them, putting them in the correct order and finally renaming all of the AL's but as you'll appreciate it's a fairly long drawn out process which would take forever.
I also need a method which has instant built in flexibility for when I tweak some of the AL's settings. At this point I wouldn't want to then have to go through the whole process of re-writing an involved action.
I hope the above makes some sense to you all and that you can understand what I want to do.
I've briefly looked over the Adobe forum where many people have been trying to find unsuccessfully the answer to this question for many years. If anyone has some sort of workaround for this I would very much appreciate hearing from you.

Muse doesn't seem to see Photoshop Adjustment Layers

I like to place Photoshop files in Muse, so I can quickly edit a non-destructive format, instead of a JPEG. I recently noticed that some placed Photoshop files were markedly more dull in Muse than they appear in Photoshop.
Opening the Muse-created web page and comparing it with an open Photoshop file, it appears that Muse is not honoring my top layers, which are Photoshop Adjustment Layers.

As much as I believe that Muse is not really fit for purpose yet, I do not have the issues you are encountering with Opera.
