Adjustments Brush Issue

I've been using LR3 for quite some time now, but just yesterday I ran into a major difficulty.
When attempting to use the adjustment brush on a DNG photo, the entire photo immediately disappears into grey.  If I move between images in the develop module, all the other images are grey as well.  If I restart LR3, the images appear normally until I try to use the adjustment brush.  THe images appear normally if I switch over to the library module.  I've attempted clearing preferences and reinstalling but to no avail.  Has anyone seen anything like this before?
(And before you suggest it--it is not just a problem with having the brush overlay turned on, since if I click on the image with a small brush, the entire image is immediately greyed out.)
Any help would be great.  Thanks.

Since this is clearly a bug, I think you should report it if you haven't already.
And, maybe try your luck with 'Adobe Technical Support', if you don't get it resolved soon via your own efforts and the forum...

  • Noise reduction function built into built into graduated filter and adjustments brush!

Really useful functionality, but maybe the tool name shout be "Noise reduction" rather than "noise" for the graduated filter and adjustments brush.  If I understand it correctly, the way all the sliders work now is that that movement to the left decreases the function of the slider, and to the right increases the function - if that is the case, then by labelling the slider "noise" would suggest that moving to the right is increasing the noise when in fact it is the reverse!

The explanation is that "noise reduction" doesn't fit the available space in all languages.

  • ACR locking up i7 processor when using selective adjustments brush

I hit a strange problem last night that I've not previoulsy encountered with ACR, which is normally fast and responsive on my PC.
    I'm running CS5 on an i7 860 with 8GB RAM and a Radeon 5850 graphics card on Windows 7 64-bit.
I'd previoulsy made a pretty large mask using the adjustment brush with an 8.5MB raw file. I say large as it was intended to significantly darken the background of the photo; it covered perhaps as much as two thirds of the image (not something I'd normally need to do) and the adjustment was set to darken by around -2 stops of exposure. I'd set up the mask a couple of days ago, but went back in last night to tweak it as some of the edges were a bit too abrupt in the way they transitioned from the black background to the subject of the photo. When I first set it up, it didn't seem to cause any issues other than slower loading of the file (but I expected this as it will of course be having to make a lot of ajustments to the image preview due to my heavy adjustment brush use).
Working on it last night, ACR slowed to an absolute crawl. Even zooming in could take say 30 seconds to move from 50% view to 100%. Likewise, panning around the image when zoomed in was exceptionally slow. I have that standard Windows gadget running on the desktop that gives an indication of memory and processor use, and I was astounded to see that it was running the processor at 100% (I could also hear the fan kicking in to overdrive)! In all my time using CS4 and CS5 on this PC, it's never got to that level before, including when carrying out activities such stitching around 40 images together in Photoshop, working with 3GB PSB files, etc. This was after all a single raw file. I perceviered and managed to complete the edit. When I closed the file down I went back to Bridge and tried to open another file, and again the PC locked up at 100% processor use. I noticed that Bridge was still trying to generate a preview for the troublesome image I'd completed, and when it finally managed to finish this things went back to normal speed - I could for example open multiple raw files into ACR without any issues.
I wonder if anyone else has experienced this kind of issue? Perhaps the adjustment brush can really push a PC if used heavily? Maybe I need to tweak some settings somewhere? I was using the 64-bit ACR launched from PS rather than from Bridge, and the only other application running was Bridge (as I would normally work). I'd have thought an i7 with a decent amount of memory could handle a single raw file, even with extensive modifications being applied.
Be very interested to hear what others think.

    Many thanks for your reply.
I have previoulsy spent quite some time looking at the various recommendations Adobe give for performance and I think I've got my PC set up pretty well in respect of this. Having said that, I haven't adjusted any of the Windows virtual memory settings, so I might take a look at that later on. However, I'm not convinved this is the root cause of the problem: my memory use wasn't at 100% (just the processor), and as it was just one raw file on an 8GB system, I can't see how it could max out in the way it did... But then I'm not a computer expert either...
(Oh, you linked to the Mac performance page! Threw me for a minute there! )

  • Roto Brush issue in CS5 Premiere Pro

I am a new CS5 user with a week of learning under my belt.  (My previous experience was splicing 8mm film together when making films as a kid.)  I am hoping someone can advise on an issue I am encountering in CS5 Premiere Pro?  (I realize Roto Brush is a tool in After Effects, but I am having trouble with the output of the Roto Brush tool in Premiere Pro.)
I opened a .VOB file (taken from a DVD) in Premiere Pro (first I changed the extension to .MPG).  It opened as 720 x 480 at 23.976 fps.  No problems scrubbing through and using the Razor tool.  I selected one of the small razored subsections I made from the video, and opened it in After Effects using the Premiere Pro menu selection: File>Adobe Dynamic Link>Replace With After Effects Composition.  No problem opening in After Effects.  I learned the Roto Brush tool and it also worked great as I successfully masked out a moving figure - looks great.  But ...
When I return to Premiere Pro, the After Effect composition does not display the same as it did in After Effects.  Specifically there appears to be some kind of mask/motion mismatch, and so a bluish border will appear on some frames around the figure as it moves.  In After Effects the rotoscope is perfect, but in Premiere it is like a poorly done rotoscope with the borders of the figure messed up.  I am hoping the comparison images below will make this clear.  The image on the left shows the perfectly rotoscoped figure in After Effects, and on the right the same frame but in Premiere Pro.  Note how the image in Premiere Pro has a messed up border around the figure?
Has anyone experienced this or know why it is occuring?  I can think of some possible work-arounds that could be tried, but the dynamic link method is nice and fast.  So before I start rendering and saving and reopening files in a work-around attempt, I am wondering first what could be causing this issue.  Thanks for any ideas.

    Hi,
Just to let you know that you've posted in the Audition (audio) forum and may do better posting over in the Premier Pro forums.
However, as one who works in both video and audio, I'd just comment that your choice of export format is affected big time by what you want to do with your edit.  Things like Youtube, DVD, Bluray, etc. all have their own formats that you have to adhere to.  Within those formats you often have choices you can make to balance bandwidth vs. quality but these only come into play once you've decided where your project has to end up.

  • LR 2.5 CR 5.5 Saturation Brush Issue - Won't Open in CS4

    Hi,
I've updated LR and CS4 to Camera Raw 5.5.  I've noticed on images (raw CR2) that when I apply saturation brush changes in LR (e.g -100%) and then try to open that image for editing in CS4 it just doesn't open!
    Anyone else getting this too?
    Thanks.

Are you in 64 bit mode???
I experienced the same issue. Random images would not open in CS4 after making local edits (not just SAT brush). Image would open in NIK or other external editors without a problem. Also, if I reimported the same image file, I could edit in CS4 as long as I did not make local edits.
Finally, the problem was solved when I switched LR back to 32 bit mode.
I am running CR 5.5 with the latest Snow Lep version. I suspect this is another 64 bit issue with Adobe/Apple that they will hopefully fix soon.
    Regards,
    Kurt

  • Spot healing brush issues

When the spot healing bursh is activated the cursor changes erratically from a pointer to the spot brush and does not seem to work.  I am on a iMac 64bit machine with OS 10.7.2.  Anyone else having this issue?  hjz62

I've also seen this with Lion and LR3.5. If you resize the circle with the mouse wheel, drag on the magic mouse, it seems to sort itself out.
It is very frustrating and I've tried deleting the cache and several other things.
However it is eratic and does not always happen, so very frustrating
LR4 seems to be clear of this, so maybe its been fixed for the next iteration of LR

  • Spot healing brush issues in photoshop elements 11

I am new to photoshop elements 11.  I am trying to use the spot healing brush.  I select "content aware,' "sample all layers," and a brush, but I only get the cross hairs of the cursor, and not the black circle.  My cursor preferences are currently at the default.  I get a black line when I press the mouse key, but nothing changes in the photo.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks.
    Sue

I found that I had some problematic brush settings.  I've developed this checklist for when I have similar issues:
o  Try changing the px on the brush slider in thespot healing tool
o  Go to the BRUSH tool (B), change opacity asneeded (probably 100%), go to the brush settings drop down and change thehardness (again probably to 100%)
o  Check that CAPS LOCK is NOT on
o  Go to the center icon (lower right by the ?),drop down, then select "reset all Tools," then restart the photoeditor
o  Then try to reset the editor preferences: Quitthe editor, restart it from the welcome screen while holding downctrlshiftalt, then say "yes" to delete the settings file
You don't have to do all of these things.  They are just things to check when you have brush problems.  So now I'm working OK.  I hope that this works for you.

  • Brush Issues w/Mac Mt. Lion retina display

I have contacted Adobe about issues with Photoshop brushes recently.  My issue is that the brush size is smaller than the circle that represents the brush.  In other words, when I hoover over the area that I want to paint or erase with the circle and then click, the painted or erased area is smaller that the circle.  It's really frustrating when fine tuning an image, you never know how close you are to what you want to correct.  This is only visible when you zoom in quit a bit.  I worked with an Adobe tech for over an hour and he could not simulate the problem.  Then he finally asked if I was using a retina display, (he was not).  Yes... Oh, we have not worked on retina display issues yet.  Is this true or was he just trying to ditch me?

Hi. Because the forum you originally posted in is for beginners trying to learn the basics of Photoshop, I moved your question to the Photoshop General Discussion forum.

  • Painting Brush Issue

Ok I've been painting an image in Cs4 for some time but I took a break from it for a few weeks and I just came back to it, The issue I'm having is the way my brush presets are acting towards my brushes. I was using a Charcoal Brush which when messing with the presets works similar to a real paint brush in terms of the way the bristles show. This is sort of hard to explain but I'll try. My brush when I was using it, had like a dry brush effect; you could the see individual bristles depending on how much I messed with the brush shape dynamics, it could be thick like a loaded brush or it could be thin like a dry brush whatever. Now though when I try and recreate the brush when I go to the shape dynamics its not acting the way it was before. The brush wont thin out it takes on a splatter effect when I move the scattering slider and size jitter that never happened before and I cant get it to stop. Before the way those sliders would effect the brush is it would spread out the bristles now they just add a splatter on them and I cant change it.
^^^^^ That image is the brush before I mess with the presets. Normally I'd spread out the bristles but when I try I get the effect on the image below.
I know this is a bad explanation but I really cant figure out what I'm doing wrong I've reset the brushes I don't know how many times same with the presets I've messed with the opacity and flow but nothing is working. I wonder is there anyone who has an Idea of how I can possibly fix this? It's a problem because I need that effect from the brush in order to match the rest of the painting, Any help or advice would be appreciated, and again sorry for the bad explanation.

Yea I've tried both Size Jitter adds a splatter on it so I already have it at 0 and Pen Pressure just rounds out the edges which I don't mind but neither really have to do with the effect from before. I've tried to mimic the way I had the brush before going in and erasing some. The way it's working now is the top stroke and the way I had it is the bottom. Before the strokes where more spaced out, result of messing with the presets now if I mess with the they add a splatter to them.

  • Lightroom 2.4 Adjustment Brush issue

I currently use Windows XP home and Lightroom 2.4 updated within the last two weeks. When I use the Adjustment Brush it creates the ruby lith mask over the image and dose not show any interactive live adjustments as I've seen on many of the on-line tutorials. Only after I've clicked the close button or the Adjustment Brush are the changes made. I then have to reselect the Adjustment Brush click the appropriate pin and get the same ruby lith mask and repeat the process time and again to achive the results I want.  I have the original 2.2 version on my laptop an it works as per the tutorials. Any pointers as to where I am going wrong would be welcome.

On Mac ctrl +h hide\show pins, o - shows mask, shift + o changes color of the mask

  • Adjustment Brush issue over Windows 7

I’m using Windows 7 and Lightroom 2.5 and I’m having some issues with the “Adjustment brush”.
The brush cursor is not well drawn.
I get like “half circle and half plus”.
Or, I get multiple cursors: like 3 or 4.
The tool works ok, but the cursor is terrible.
Also, this issue only happens at some brush and feather size. In the huge and in the smallest ones doesn't happens.
    Any ideas?
BTW, also happened with the 2.4 version.

The most likely cause is a video card driver issue. For example, Lightroom and the nVidia Desktop nView control panel don't play well together. If using an nVidia card it might be worth changing the settings from Quality to Performance or vice versa (can'\t recall which). Also check that you have the most up to date video card driver.

  • Adjustment Brush Issue

I've been using the adjustment brush for quite sometime, via LR2 and now LR3.  Currently I am using LR3 and it just stopped working all together.  It won't let me update the previous brush strokes made, nor will it make any changes through new brush strokes.  It will place a new pin, but nothing will take effect or become highlighted when I have the arrow over it, like it does the older pins I had set that work.  I've tried turning certain settings off and on again, as many as I can think of and nothing is working.
When it began doing this today though, I did try something that I'm not quite familiar with.  I was trying out the color settings under the brush adjustments and when I tried to go back to using exposure, saturation, etc. it hasn't worked since.  Anyone have an idea as to what I can do to get it working again?

    Never mind .
