Adjustments

so, since I wasn't getting a lot of traction on the previous thread I thought I would post something a bit more generic
<<The rub is - the ONLY way to get ADJUSTMENTS out of Aperture is through a static export ( TIFF or JPG )
Can we all agree on that ? >>
if you'd like context, heres the original thread
Re: Export Advice
( thanks again Kirby // waiting for your reply )

Well, yes. Aperture (and Lightroom) are non-destructive editors. They never touch the original file (often a RAW file, but a JPEG or TIFF file is created the same way). They just record details on your adjustments in a database and that's that. The originals aren't modified.
I don't really see the problem. Any time you want to take a modified version of a file and do something with it (what? put it on a web page, print it, email it?) you generate a JPEG or TIFF file that has the adjustments "baked in." You can do this any time you want.
Honestly, it's not like it takes 10 hours to adjust an image. In most cases, even if I lost all adjustments on an image, I could get something I'm happy with in somewhere between 15 seconds and 5 minutes. So I'm just not overly worried about it. Yes, you could export JPEG or TIFF versions of your "baked" images if you want.
But here's something to think about: RAW converters are continually improving. The one in OS X is WAY BETTER today than it was when Aperture was introduced in 2006. Similarly, Lightroom and Adobe Camera RAW are much better today than they were when it was released in 2007. There are big benefits to starting from scratch on many images. Taking a "baked" final image as the end-all be-all is the wrong approach if quality (and not consistency with something you did 8 years ago) is what you're after.

  • Copying Adjustments from One Work Station to Another

I have several computers, three of which are Macs and two of which I use for image processing. They are all networked but I can't figure out how to copy the work I do at one workstation to another workstation. Each has its own Aperture library and it seems impractical (perhaps impossible) to use a library on a network drive.
While I can easily export a version as an image, I can't see a way to export the adjustment information for a selected image and transfer it from one Aperture library to another. In Lightroom, this is easy. I just export the information to an XMP file, transfer the XMP file to the other workstation, open Lightroom there and import from the XMP file(s). Viola! I now have all the adjustments I had made at the previous workstation and can continue exactly where I left off. I can't find an equivalent of this in Aperture. It seems the only way to do this is to export an entire project and then import it to the other library. Is that correct?

Correct. With Aperture the only way to share adjustments is to export projects from one machine and import them on another.
Having 3 machines where you work on Aperture independently is a way to have a complicated workflow. It's best to have a primary machine, and perhaps a laptop you take for field work, where you export projects when you return to the studio and import them to your primary machine. That works great.

  • Bug Report: Shortcuts for Adjustments in 3.1

I have verified that bug with a brand new test account (Aperture 3.1 and OS 10.6.4 with latest Pro Update):
    - Make an adjustment to an NEF-file
    - save that adjustment as a preset
    - assign a keyboard shortcut to that specific adjustment
Switch to the next NEF-file and make your usual adjustments:
    - initiate that shortcut to apply the already saved preset/adjustment
All of a sudden, all already applied adjustments are set back to defaults!!!!
    To sum up:
    Shortcuts are presently not useable!
    Bug Report was filed!
    Any observations???

I got it myself. My shortcut combination contained the option key. That causes AP to replace any adjustments already made to the image. You have to use a keyboard short cut combination without the option key.
The question is, why AP 3.1 is not smart enough to refuse such a combination??? In version 3.0.x everything worked fine!!!

  • Creating Price adjustments for a sales order through backend

We need to calculate and update unit selling price for accessory lines based on the price of mainframe/ base unit line. We are using oe_order_pub.process_order API for this purpose. It is working fine except for calcuating the adjustments on the accessory lines. As per the seeded functionality, there will be a record created for each different modifier selected in oe_price_adjustments. When we are passing the values calculated to the API, it is updating all the lines present for that line_id irrespective of the list_header_id and list_line_id and also the adjustments are not getting calculated accurately. Please let me know if there is any way to capture the modifier selected in front end passed to the package in backend for calculation or any work around to achieve the accurate adjustments calculation and updation in oe_price_adjustments.

  • Image Adjustments Not Saved with DNG?

It appears that the adjustments (i.e. all of the work you do to "develop" your pictures) are not saved with the image file. They appear to be saved in the LR Library. So if anything happens to your library, your developing work is gone. I thought my adjustments were saved with the DNG, but this does not appear to be the case.
So, to be sure that my work is saved with the image, it appears that the processed files must be saved to a different format like JPG, TIFF, or PSD. With JPG quality is lost, and your ability to edit is severely compromised. With PSD and TIFF, you have another copy of extremely large files to deal with.
    Is my understanding correct?
What are your suggestions to deal with this?
    Thank you.

    Geoff and John,
    Thank you very much.
You confirm the critical point that your work is saved in the Library, and the Library must be closely supervised and backed up.
Beside my on-site backups, I set up a Stuffit schedule to back up a daily version of my library. My current library is 57.6MB and Stuffit compresses it to 8.7MB and automatically FTPs it to my web site for archiving.
I found that my 2GB file of previews is unnecessary, since my computer creates new previews almost as quickly as it reads the preview file, at least on a folder basis. So, I removed my preview files, and I have them saved for only one day in prefrences.
For my DNGs, beside my on-site backups, I create a DNG with the RAW (NEF) file embedded and back them up on my web site. Then I create DNGs with Adobe DNG converter, without embedded RAWs (LR embeds the RAWs)to use for my working files.
One of the reasons I decided to use DNGs is to avoid having separate XMP files. However, it sounds like you can export the XMP to the DNG without creating separate XMPs. I'll look in to that. I assume that exporting the XMPs to the DNGs will allow me to open them directly in CS2 (not by exporting from LR) or other programs with my adjustments intact. This would solve the problem of losing adjustments if the Library becomes dysfunctional.
    Thanks again.

  • Copying adjustments from one image in series to another

I did a shoot where, under the same lighting conditions, all shots need basically the same adjustments in terms of color temp, saturation, etc.
I know there's a way that after I get one to where I like it, I can copy those adjustments to all the other images, but I can't find it.
Could someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks a lot.
    John

John, you should see the effects immediately, assuming of course that the develop settings you are pasting produce a visible result compared to the previous settings. To be sure of your testing, I'd suggest making an obvious adjustment to exposure like vastly underexposing the image so that when you paste it, you'll immediately see it. You can always Undo the changes after once you've got things working.
I really don't know what else to say; this has always worked simply and smoothly. If you're getting the Copy Settings dialog and selecting All and then clicking OK, pasting is simply a matter of selecting the images you want the adjustments to go to and then choosing the Paste Settings command.

  • How do I apply same adjustments to multiple photos at the same time?

How do I apply same adjustments to multiple photos at the same time?

You can't but you can copy the adjustments made on one photo and apply/paste it onto another by:
1 - Control (right)-clicking one the edited photo in the Edit mode and selecting Copy Adjustsments
2 - Control-clicking on the next photo and selecting Paste Adjustments.

  • How to use amount control for multiple sliders in the basic adjustments window

In a webinar an instructor (Chris Orwig) demonstrated how to make multiple adjustments in the basic panel in the develop module.  He then showed how to close the basic module by clicking on the small triangle at the top of the module.  When this was done a single control bar and slider appeared in place of the closed basic module. Moving this slider allowed the instructor to adjust all previously set basic module settings at the one time.  I tried to do this.  But when I close the basic module no control bar and slider appear.  Any suggestions why this is the case?
    I use Lightroom 5.4 and OS 10.9.2.

He evidently wasn't in the Basic panel, but in the Adjustment Brush:
Clicking on the triangle at the end of the red arrow yields this:
And there is your Effect slider.

  • How do I get QT 6.5.2 image adjustments to be retained on iMovie import

    Hi,
I produced a DVD last year using clips from my digital camera (which always need tint, contrast, brightness, and color adjustments), Quicktime, and iMovie. I sat down this weekend to do the same thing, but discovered, much to my discomfiture, that the image adjustment features are missing in Quicktime Pro 7 (on my Powerbook G4 running Mac OS 10.3.9). Luckily, I'd kept quicktime 6.5.2 because I'd heard that the upgrade would eliminate the features. However when I import a 6.5.2-adjusted clip into iMovie, the image adjustments aren't retained! Do I have to downgrade iMovie too or what? How do I get my image adjustments to stick?
I've tried making the same adjustments using iMovie, but they don't provide nearly the amount of fine control as in quicktime 6.5.2 and I just end up making it look worse no matter how much I fiddle with it. I event tried counting how many pixels I'm moving the slider over to match the quicktime adjustments and I just can't reproduce the image quality.
Is there a way I can get this to work without having to buy anything (which I find highly questionable since I used to be able to do this before) and if I MUST buy something, how will I know if I need to buy a new graphics card (as is mentioned on one of the support FAQs)?
    Rob

That's all well and good, but it's so much more time consuming. I've been trying, unsuccessful, for hours to get the image just right in this one clip using the method you suggest - a process which took me under a minute using the video controls in 6.5.2 - and I can't seem to get it right. I know that iMovie used to respect the adjustments made in the video controls because I have DVDs to prove it that I made a year ago. Using the filter process you suggested has proven to be too time consuming for me. These clips need a lot of adjusting and I often go back and forth between the adjustments to tweak them based on the new image quality. Sure filters give me more options, but it just takes way too long and all I can seem to do is make it worse. I want it to work the way it used to, and as far as I can tell, there are two solutions: downgrade something or upgrade the OS and possibly install a video card. Does anyone know if a downgrade of just iMovie will work or do I need to reinstall my OS (and not update) to restore the previous abilities? Or, if I upgrade the OS, how will I know if I need the aforementioned graphics card? If I upgrade, will it work the way it used to and import into iMove with the image adjustments or will it not work that way anymore at all?
    Thanks,
    Rob

  • How can I create a new catalog of all my photos with no develop adjustments?

I use Lightroom 4.3.  I tried this by deleting the old catalog, and creating a new one, thinking that the develop adjustments would no longer exist after first deleting the old catalog.  The develop adjustments were still there.  (I deleted the catalog out of the lightroom sub-folder of My Pictures.)
The reason that I want to do this is that I have one folder (of about 800 important photos) where something went very wrong in Lightroom, and every time I try to pull up one of the photos my whole computer stalls.  Everything works beautifully in my other folders.  I even re-installed Lightroom.  I want to re-add those dng photos without the develop adjustments.  It doesn't bother me if none of my files have develop adjustments.  I save all of my files after they are adjusted.  I save the DNGs also.
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

One easy way: reset after importing (which can be done from library module - e.g. main menu, context menu, quick-develop...). If you can't even get that far, consider using exiftool to strip the xmp from DNGs and/or jpegs, or just delete xmp sidecar file in case of proprietary raw.

  • Is there a way to make the flyout window for the adjustments panel close automatically?

The flyout window for the tool on the adjustments panel is OK, although I'm not thrilled that it takes up space inside of the image.  Is there a way to either make it open within the panel the way it did in CS5 or close automatically when you have finished making adjustments?

Just to help with terminology in the future...
The Adjustments is not in itself normaly called a ''flyout window'', and it operates like other panels and responds to the settings R_Kelly has mentioned.
There's a menu sometimes called the ''fly-out menu'' that you get when you click the little icon at the upper-right corner of the Adjustments panel.
I just wanted to mention the distinction because experts may at first be confused if you describe a panel itself as ''flyout'', even though that's what they do.

  • How can I make adjustments in MOMENTS view

When I choose the top most Photos icon in the side bar, the moments view is evident.  My photos are grouped by day dates.  This makes is very difficult to locate photos known to be within a certain month or even year.  As I scroll down through the listing, I noticed that some of my groups had the same date, yet were grouped separately.  Then I notice some groups have a location listing, then back to days, then back to locations.  A few pictures were listed under locations that were wrong.  Is there any way to make a change on how the moments view is arranged?  The IOS moments at least has a few adjustments.

A view is a stored query. It gets executed at run time. A view does not occupy any physical space in the database (other than the insignificant amount of space required to store the query in the data dictionary).
A materialized view actually materializes the results of a query in a separate table structure, so it consumes physical space in the database. It also has to be refreshed at some interval, either synchronously with DML or asynchronously on a set interval.

  • Grain/Noise disappear while making adjustments in ACR

Can someone help me wrap my head around this? When making an adjustment using, for example, a luminance slider,(Hue Sat Lum dialog), in ACR, Noise and Grain disappear during the adjustment only to return after releasing the left click button. This makes it very difficult to get a real time feel for adjustments. More like trial and error. I haven't noticed this before. I've been running CS5 on win7 with a dedicated 500gb scratch disk. I work primarily with Raw files. The appearance during the adjustment resembles having cranked the luminance or masking, (in the sharpening/noise reduction dialog), way up. It may be that this is most prevalent when working on  an image that has been significantly cropped.

  • How can I use the color adjustments interface that shows up for camera RAW on jpeg files?

How can I use the color adjustments interface that shows up for camera raw on other files types? The HLS controls had the secondary color adjustments (6 colors instead of the 3). Plus, it had same vibrancy and a better Curves interface. Yesterday was the first time I imported raw into Photoshop CS5 and I got that really cool interface. What is that? Can I use that on other file formats?

Actually I am using the Tradional Chinese Version, when I try to edit the jpg file with camera raw, the system shows that there is no camera raw plug-in. The cmaera raw never work.
