ADMIN CAN'T UNLOCK SYSTEM PREFS!!! THIS IS A BUG, PEOPLE!

Ever since I upgraded to Maverick, I haven't been able to change my locked system preferences. They just won't unlock, no matter what I do. Everywhere I've gone to get some clarity on this problem, all anybody asks is if I'm the Admin, like I'm some kind of moron who doesn't know that if you click the lock and enter your password, the lock will unlock. Yes, I'm the Admin, mine is the only account on my MacBook Pro, everything worked fine before I upgraded, and now what I get is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubGAD-v_ODs
For those of you who require a visual of the problem to see that it's NOT happening because users just don't know how to work the lock, I beg you…please look at this 7 second YouTube video. Every lock in system preferences behaves just like this. That's the only consistency I've found. I've been researching this for days now and while it seems that tons of people are having the same problem, completely unable to either lock or unlock their preference settings, nobody anywhere seems to have a clue as to how to definitively fix this problem. It's not Maverick because I've read posts from other users who are complaining about the same behavior from Lion and Mountain Lion. I've exhausted what little Unix I know with killall commands and I'm tired of shooting in the dark, trying solutions that work for some people but haven't worked at all for me.
I'm not a new user. I've been using Macs since the first Macs came out, so I know how to click the lock to change my preferences. It's not my keychain as I've already done repairs on that. I've restarted every time I tried something new, but that didn't help. The fixes that I've read people have tried and found success with are not consistent and none of them have worked for me.
I'm just guessing but in my opinion, the most likely reason for this is that something has gone horribly wrong with my permissions. I'm just not sure how to fix that, assuming my permissions are even the problem. And since everything was fine until I upgraded to Maverick, my best guess is that it happened during my last system update. It would explain why sometimes the fixes people are trying work and sometimes they don't. Maybe the update changed different settings for my Mac than the people who've fixed their issue had. I'd love to know if anyone else noticed that the problem started right after a system update, particularly since it's also happening to people who are using older OS versions before Maverick.
But more than that, what I REALLY want to know is how to fix this. I don't want to keep randomly trying stuff. I need a good, clean fix. Since none of the Apple experts here seem to have any idea as to even why this is happening, much less how to solve the problem, I can only conclude that THIS HAS TO BE A BUG and the only fix is yet another system update that patches whatever is making this lock thing happen. Could it be an installer issue that's fouling things up? Could it be a problem with the App Store's delivery of the updates? I sure hope somebody finds a solution real soon, because while I can't unlock my prefs, at least they're locked. I really feel bad for the people who can't lock theirs. I really believe that the two problems are related.
CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WITH ANY CERTAINTY HOW TO FIX THIS AND WHAT TO DO TO KEEP IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN?!!!
(sorry for all the caps )

Hi Mac Warrior,
I have the same issue. Just after a restart, everything works but after few minutes, the issue comes back.
Moreover, when I try to switch to another user account, a white screen appears without the possibility to do anything else than using the power button to shut it off.
I hope a fix will come faster.
Not sure that will help but I have error logs when I open User preferences :

  • CAN'T OPEN SYSTEM PREFS, AGAIN!!!!

    THIS IS TOO MUCH!
Yesterday, I could not open my system prefs. I did every thing possible within my actual system, trashed all that could be the problem, did a archived reinstalled, ran Tech Tool, Disk Warrior. Eventually had to do a clean install.
The new prefs opened once for me to change international prefs and then IT'S GONE AGAIN!!!
    CAN'T OPEN SYSTEM PREFS AGAIN!!!!
THIS IS KILLING ME ! DOCK BOUNCES BUT NOTHING HAPPENS
    HELP!

    Laurent/Klaus,
Sys prefs is an app and it's icon can be dragged into the dock. Laurent will have done that. I would suggest to him he, 1) dump the dock icon, drag it from dock and have it go 'poof', 2) Try to launch it and use it from the Apple menu, 3) Try to launch it and use it from the icon in 'Applications', 4) Knowing then you can get it to run drag the 'Applications' icon afresh into the dock.
Could try repairing permissions for the Sys Pref app.

  • Can't open System prefs 2.3

"You can't open this version of the application System Preferences" with this version of Mac OS X
    You have system preference 2.3"
    OS: 10.6.8
I've repaired my permissions for this volume
but still can't open the system prefs
    what gives ??
    thanks

In your Applications folder, select System Preferences, and see what version you have. I have version 7. If you really do have version 2.3, do a backup, boot from the Snow Leopard DVD, and reinstall the system.

  • Can't open system prefs- general

This is ever since the update to 10.7.
When I try to open "General" in the System Preferences
(which looks the old "Appearance" and is still named that way),
    I get an error message...
    error in system preferences
    cant open General prefs.
I tried to delete some plist-files, but did not find the one, that might contain the named error.
Anyone has an idea on the subject ?
    asks
    inxar

I have the same problem with iCloud and MobileMe preferences... Any ideas?

  • OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Admin can you do something about this.

    /thread/563626 [original link is broken]
    ITS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!.

The serious answer, as a SAP professional from India, would be a long one and may need another post (or rant, which I am sure to post one of these days).
Let us strip this one to the essentials though. The guy asks for interview questions (so he/she is going for one), and there are couple of cut-paste jobs.
About the first one, all we can say for sure is he/she is naive (to have posted this question here) and mannerless for disregarding the forum guidelines.
About the ones answering it, they are probably looking to earn points the only way they know (cut+paste).
    - If I am going through a screening process, I try to collect all the info to be in maximum position of strength. Asking potential interview questions is only that - a part of preparation. If I apply for Harvard, I will still be looking for potential clues on how the application is processed. Speaking of Harvard, you can see a lot of aspirants looking on internet forums for ways to write their essays, and to write their profile in a way that has most chance of acceptance. There is a whole industry coaching such aspirants in all matters of selection process (the latest being the 'voluntary tourism' where you go to a third world country on a three star tour or 'learning program' with the intention of it making up for some 'substance' in your resume as a responsible global citizen - worthy of a top school).
    Anyway.
As long as one doesn't ask the interviewer to 'leak' the questions, we can call it naivette, or have an impression of this candidate being otherwise unworthy, but not much else.
We can be cautious when hiring/working in such environment, but that is it as I see.

  • Can't unlock System Preferences

Issue came with Yosemite: whenever I try to unlock any of of the Securirty & Privacy preferences, the lock unlocks itself for a fraction of a second and stays locked. I've noticed that if I actually set a password (instead of using no password) it works fine, so I assume it's just another bug.
I came across similar unsolved issues with previous OS versions.
    Anyone else? Thanks.

Don't know, but IIRC, it's always been that way. This is from Snow Leopard.

  • Can anyone else conform if this is a bug?

Take a video clip and animate the clip - just move the position and set 2 keyframes. Then use the time remapping to slow it down and see if the key frames disappear from the position selection. It should still move, but the keyframes are no longer visable. If you do the time remapping first, you can set keyframes, but it won't animate.

That all depends on WHICH of the Cloud programs you use... see below, and remember that the individual program links are the MINIMUMS

  • MBP Will not wake properly from sleep-flash of screen and keyboard for a bit every few seconds.  Under guest account, wakes up just fine.  I also cannot unlock various padlocks to change settings in e.g. system prefs. security?  Any help, I'm dyin!

Not waking up from sleep-flashes lighted keyboard and screen, and I cannot unlock the padlocks in the system to change settings, look at keychain, etc.

Still cannot unlock system prefs/users etc.   Also, many applications are returning errors like:  "failed to obtain the necessary authorization"  or " '' failed to obtain permission" so I've attached a portion of my log, showing when I attempt to unlock (or click on the padlock) in system preferences - User Accounts:

  • HELPPPP! System Prefs HELP!

Hello, i have been having this problem with my system prefs for a while. What happens is when i click on the icon on my dock, it just makes a question mark. Every once in a great while, it actually works, but then goes back to not working. I can't open system prefs and i need to. I've tried resetting my PRAM and that did nothing. Any Advice???

There isn't even a app labeled System Preferences. It must of been deleted some how. WAIT!! Just used time machine and found the app. It's restored and works perfectly! thanks!!!

  • I m sure this is a bug !

i have No NumberConvertor in the page but still getting NumberConverotor Error
plz do this to reproduce the bug
Place a TextField Component on the page
drag and drop NumberConvertor on to
    the TextField
    NumberConvertor is not visible Component
u can see it in Document Outline Window
    and also u can see
setter and getter for it in page bean
now delete it(number converter) from Document Outline Window
    The number converter is deleted
now there is no setter and getter methods
for NumberConvertor in PageBean(or Managed Bean)
Save it and build the application
The TextFeild Componet appears in the
    Browser
Enter some Value and press enter
    The browser displays error regarding
    NumberConvertor
plz do comment on it ,
I would be happy if any one can figure out the problem

    Yes, this is a bug.
If you click on the "Source" tab, you can see the JSP that has been generated. The inputText field still has a reference to the number converter -- this should have been removed, but was not.
    <h:inputText binding="#{Page1.textField1}" converter="#{Page1.numberConverter1}" id="textField1" style="position: absolute; left: 456px; top: 624px"/>You can remove
converter="#{Page1.numberConverter1}" and you should no longer see the error.

  • I recently purchased a used imac with os 10.6 The problem I am having the admin in accounts in system preferences I would like to change so I can download some items I have tried different things  to do this but I cannot figure it out. thanks

I recently purchased a used imac with os 10.6 The problem I am having the admin in accounts in system preferences I would like to change so I can download some items I have tried different things  to do this but I cannot figure it out. thanks in advance.

Thats the problem I bought it from a very large thrift store. i went back asked the person where I bought the computer he said we can not give you the password. I thought buying it there was a good idea because not only was it a nice deal but it was like I was maknig a donation. I know that i messed up because i do not have the installation disk. I bought it without thinking. Until recently I was still using an old G4 9.0 os. I guess you can say I have been out of the loop for a while.

  • Non admin user - changes not saved (Safari settings, system prefs, etc.)

iMac, 2 users, one is administrator and other is standard user. Recently, in the non-admin user account, it has become impossible to make any changes. For example, adding an application to the the Dock, after logging out and back in next time, the application is not in the Dock any more. Also, making changes to the prefs in Safari, changes are not saved.
I noticed this after installing FireFox v4. I installed it as admin whilst in the non-admin users account. However, I don't believe that the installation of FF has anything to do with the problem, it just highlighted it. I've checked the permissions for the various directories that hold prefs info such as user/libraries/application prefs/etc. etc. and also Safari prefs. Nothing I can see that has changed in system prefs.
Any ideas on what has caused the problem (kids are known to fiddle from within the non-admin account) and any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks

    Hi PPRuNe,
You could try making the standard user an Admin too. To do this, make sure you are logged in to the standard user, go to System Preferences > Accounts > Standard user (you may have to unlock the padlock) > Allow user to administer this computer
This will allow changes to be made without being prompted for a password all the time.
However, if you had Parental Controls on, they probably won't work on an admin account because as an admin you have complete control over a computer, so the computer thinks there is no point in having the controls turned on. And if the kids are known to "fiddle," just think carefully!
    Hope this helps you.
    Chris.

  • Unlock Printing System Pref?

How do I unlock the print and fax system pref so that non-admin users can add printers?
I don't want to unlock them all - just the print/fax.
We have a number of users with laptops who print in the office, but then need to print offsite as well. We can add the printers in the office, but can't help when they are offsite.

Thanks for the 2 cents. I'll split it between gas prices and my mortgage payment.
I'm taking a look at the other link - good stuff in there.
I'm sorry you feel that way about a managed environment - but that was the initial reaction a lot of users had until they saw how I managed it. It's a balance between letting the users do what they need to do (add fonts, change settings in applications, save files, print, get online) and what the corporation can't let them do (illegal copies of software, security risks, buggy/outdated software, PC parity). We have a base image to which additional software can be added. Not one image for all - however 90% of the users run the base image as it is since it is openly talked about an updated with what they request.
I act as a liason between the users and the corporation. By having the systems managed globally there are a lot of benefits that any one individual or small group of users will never see or even think about. Things like software license bulk purchaes or true-up agreements where common software is purchased en-masse for quick deployment without having to register it. Or a new application that one group may use may be site licensed and included in the standard build for the rest of the company to use. Or one user who catches a problem with a new build and reports it back up the chain so a fix can be pushed to every other user before they know the problem is there. Or having an advocate in IT to back up a users request from a technical standpoint. Or the development of a corporate Mac intranet site so non-congruous Mac users can communicate in message boards like this, download patches, swap excess hardware or software between users in different states, keep up on the latest corporate Mac initiatives - and supply feedback to help shape policies that affect them BEFORE they become law, and even Mac news items, bugs, and how-to's as articles where the 5 newest items are displayed via RSS feed to the Mac screensaver so people stay informed and can leave feedback.
You may be thinking of a dictatorship - but what I run is more of a democracy. The proof? I am here trying to UNLOCK a feature for users in our managed environment. Is it perfect? Nope. Perfect is boring. It's dynamic, secure, flexible, low maintenance (for everyone including users), and some other corporate-speak buzzwords. I ran Mac labs in education, so I know what you may be thinking of. But this is light years beyond that. And I hope you DO get to have this experience. The poll I run on the Mac intranet site says about 80% of the Mac users are having a much more positive experience than in the past.

  • System Prefs Users&Groups crash on unlock

Hi there, my Mac pro 2,1 running 10.7.5 has a few issues. One of them is that the System prefs Users&Groups crashes on unlocking the padlock. After I entered the password (I'm the admin) System Prefs crash. I have no problems accessing the other system prefs and unlocking them. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks!

Wow! Solved it. Still not sure what caused it but reading upon other threads I did a test changing the user icon and booted in safe mode. No problems in safe mode and after booting in normal mode I could unlock Users&Groups again. It also solved an issue where the Dock would crash upon contextual menu and iTunes that would crash on launch but would work after relaunch. I've had this iTunes problem for months, even after upgrading to iTunes 11.

  • Why can I not disable the guest user in the 10.8.2 update? I have never enabled the guest user, but after the update, it was automatically enabled with a "managed" tag. It is not selectable even after entering my admin password to unlock the options.

Why can I not disable the guest user in the 10.8.2 update? I have never enabled the guest user, but after the update, it was automatically enabled with a "managed" tag. It is not selectable even after entering my admin password to unlock the options. I was able to select the account under "parental controls", but again, could not delete it. Why Apple? Why?!!????

SOLVED Ok. I actually was able to disable it. I had to actually log in as the guest user to make it accessible in the preference window. Then I disabled it and logged out. Apologies if this was obvious for some people, but I have had some sort of issue with something every update since Snow Leopard.
