Admin name/password when shutting down

Here's a weird one. Just got a MacBook and transferred data/settings etc. from iBook using firewire. Everything seems to work, except: when multiple users are logged in, and I try to shut down, it asks for Admin name/password in order to shut down. Same as iBook, except the MacBook doesn't recognize either the name of the Admin or the password (don't know which). The admin password worked for installing software updates, so I'm totally confused. I reset the admin password using the install disc, but it still doesn't recognize the name or password. Anyone have a clue to help? Log in password works, as does the app. install (as I mentioned).

Thank for the hint, James!
There was a problem with an "extra" user logged in - "_xcsbuildd ".
"sudo xcrun xcscontrol --reset" completely removes the Xcode Service including the _xcsbuildd user.

  • White screen flash when shutting down after a suspend

If I have suspended my laptop at any time during its uptime, when shutting down the screen flashes white, but it turns off as usual. This only happens if I have suspened.
There are no issues as far as I can tell, I see nothing much in journalctl when comparing a suspeded shutdown vs no suspend.
Im using nouveau, and I'm up-to-date as of now.
    Google hasnt returned much,
    Anyone else seeing this?

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.2 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • MacMini Hangs When Shutting Down

    Hi all.
I've tried looking up the answers to this but I have a slightly different issue from others who had issues when shutting down.
This started a few months ago.  What happens is when I click to shut down the computer, everything starts closing out.  The top menu bar disappears but then nothing else happens.  I'm basically looking at my wallpaper with nothing on it but my dock will still be up.  When I look on my dock the only thing that appears to be active is the "Finder" folder.  When I click on it nothing happens, however, if I right click it says that the application is not responding and gives me the option to relaunch, but nothing happens.  So it seems like there's something going on with the "Finder" folder that is preventing it from shutting down.
For what it's worth, I did run "Verify Disk" from Disk Utilities that said everything came back okay.  I unplugged any external devices hooked up via USB like my USB hub to see if there was something going on there.
    I have a 2012 Mac Mini.
In the past, I have let it go all night to see if it would eventually shut down and it won't.  I have to force shut it down.  Ideally, I don't want to do this.  Has anyone else had this issue?
    Thanks!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Note that, though Linc is certainly correct about Avast, and about many other anti-virus programs, his is an extreme sentiment that, like most extreme sentiments, is not entirely accurate.  Some Mac anti-virus software is quite well behaved, such as ClamXav and Sophos.  Whether you need it or not is not for someone else to tell you.  You should let your personal tastes, behaviors and requirements dictate whether you use anti-virus software, within the framework of an educated protection plan.  See my Mac Malware Guide for more information that can help you figure all that out.

  • Kernel Panics When Shutting Down

    Hi guys,
I'm having these occasional kernel panics when shutting down. My MBP 13-inch 2012 non-retina just restarts showing the message "Your computer restarted because of a problem". Here is the kernel panic log:

  • Energy consumption when shut down or in sleep mode

    Dear All,
I have been going through many forums and looking for a solution.
When shutting down my computer or setting to sleep the battery is still being used. When shut down it is around 10% in a 24hr period and similar in sleep mode.
I have run "pmset -g assertions" in "Terminal" for those who dont know and the following comes up. I always have an active user. I have every program turned off.
    Assertion status system-wide:
       BackgroundTask                 0
       PreventDiskIdle                0
       ApplePushServiceTask           0
       UserIsActive                   1
       PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep    0
       InteractivePushServiceTask     0
       PreventSystemSleep             0
       ExternalMedia                  0
       PreventUserIdleSystemSleep     0
       NetworkClientActive            0
    Listed by owning process:
       pid 68(hidd): [0x0000000a00000185] 00:09:34 UserIsActive named: "com.apple.iohideventsystem.queue.tickle"
Timeout will fire in 99 secs Action=TimeoutActionRelease
Where else do I need to look?
It is bothering me to bits as I may not use it for 2-3 days or when travelling long distances. I bought this macbook pro so I could use it for extended periods, but this is such a bother!!!

    Hi all!
Thanks for the suggestions - I have checked the console logs and it looks like my Elgato EyeTV (which isn't currently connected and in use) has a helper app which is waking up the computer at strange times.

I've noticed that the EyeTV Helper App is in my Startup Items - I'll remove it from there, restart, and see how I get on.

Since I've installed LIon, "reopen windows" box is automatically checked when shutting down.
how do i change this preference?

To prevent application windows (not Finder windows) from reopening on restart, simply close all open applications, then use the Get Info dialog "Locked" checkbox to lock this plist (not the lockfile by the same name),
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.loginwindow.*.plist
where "~" is your home folder, and "*" is a string of characters (12 in my case). This plist is where the System stores "reopen windows" info, so the System can't change/delete it if it is locked. Works fine for me and others.

  • Firefox exe application error the instruction at 0x60177757 referenced memory at "0x00000004" the memory could not be read- happens when shutting down the system

This happens every time when shutting down the system?

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
    * [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx Microsoft Safety Scanner]
    * [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]
    * [http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility]
    * [http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/ Hitman Pro]
    * [http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/ ESET Online Scanner]
[http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
Further information can be found in the [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] article.

  • Beeps when Shutting down

    Hi,
Can somebody help me with this questions:
Problem no 1. (But I don´t know if it´s a problem.) Is there enybody who have a sound of short beeps when shutting down the computer.
Problem no 2. Small (white light) flickering lines across the screen when the harddisk is working
    I have following system:
    K7N2G-L
    Athlon XP 1900+
    Kingston ValueRam 2 * 256 mb (slot1 and slot 3)
    PSU 350W (qtec)
    bios versin 3.4
    Nforce drivers 2.41
    FSB ratio Dram 1:1
    Hopefully
    carljo

    carljo,
    Three things.
First, Kingston ValueRam is hit or miss with nForce. That could be your problem.
Second, your Power Supply could be the problem if it is not giving out enough juice.
Third, are the beeps more like a siren as if it is warning you your CPU is too hot and the comp shuts down.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • Issues when shutting down Arch

When shutting down arch, as normal, System > Shutdown, it then shows the CLI and the login prompt:
    mikeyd@DEATH_STAR: login
It used to sit there for 5 seconds then shutdown as usual, now it takes more than 20 seconds, if at all, is something holding up the shutdown process.  Any help would be amazing.
    Thank you
If you need any output, let me know

  • Strange Beep When Shutting Down

Today, when shutting down Windows, I received a strange beep from my MSI Mega 865.  I checked the temp, and it's only 48C.  Any ideas on what would make it beep when it shuts down?
Note:  This noise came as soon as I chose to shut down, and prior to any shut down routines actually running, not towards the end of shutting down.
Might be hyper sensitivity on my part, but any strange noise from this Mega PC is highly disconcerting for me.

You guys are going to think I'm beep happy here  , but tonight, when emptying the trash bin, I got another strange beep.  The sound is very low, hard to hear, but it is there.
Would my HardDrive firing up / spinning cause some type of system beep?  Cause that sucker spun up pretty hard/fast when I emptied the recycle bin.

  • When shutting down all devices at days end is it advisable to pull the power plug daily on the Time Capsule.

When shutting down all devices at days end is it advisable to pull the power plug daily on the Time Capsule.

It is up to you to decide.
My opinion would be that if Apple wanted you to power down the Time Capsule on a regular basis, they would have included an "Off" switch, or a means to power off the Time Capsule from your computer.

  • REP-0178 When Shutting Down a Single Report Server

    Reports 9.0.4.2 Dev Suite
    Win XP
I constanly receive a REP-0178 when shutting down my Report Server. I have read other posts that indicate this happens on systems with multiple Report Servers running. I have only a single Rep Server in use.
    Any ideas?

this might indicate that there is something wrong with your OSAGENT process. usually that happens with mutliple servers, but since all those servers bind to the same OSAGENT, shutting down the first server will shut down the OSAGENT and all subsequent shutdowns will fail
are you sure you are not runnig an in-process server (set up by default) that you are not aware of. check the rwservlet.properties and see if IN_PROCESS is set to YES or NO.
    thanks,
    ph.
