Admin name

I have downloaded mavericks 10.9 from apple internet recovery online server and now my system preference is locked and asking for administrator name to unlock . please advise urgent help required

Generally speaking the first account you created when you first got your Mac is the admin account.  For most people that is the only account on the system.
And thus, the password for the admin account is your own password.

  • How to change the admin name on Yosemite?

I just got a new MacBook Pro, the tech person that added additional memory created my admin name with a typo. It is driving me nuts.

Do you mean the "short" name or the "long" name? In either event try reading this and see if this helps solve the problem:

    Good luck...

My HP office jet 6500 printer is stuck on pause.  I do not have an admin name or password that it keeps prompting me to give, as it is a wireless printer and that info was not required when we set up the printer.  I have checked all diagnostics and connections and they are all good/passed.  I am so frustrated!!!    This has never happened in the past.

What is asking you for an admin name and password? What does the dialog say, exactly?
What model iMac are you using, and which OS version?
If it is earlier than Lion or Snow Leopard, try deleting the printer and adding it again as explained in this document

Otherwise you can "reset the printing system" as explained here

  • Changing the Admin name

How can i change the Admin name on my mac mini?

Do you mean the user account that has 'Administer this computer' privileges?
Once created, you can't (easily) alter a users name. ou could just create a new user with admin privileges and delete the old one( saving any data in the old users $HOME (~) first).

  • I don't recall always having to enter admin. name and p/w when doing updates. Is this req't only for certain software. I am a bit paranoid now with the Mac Defender lurking about.

When completing the software updates I can't remember always having to enter administrator name and password. Maybe it's just been automatic on my part but now I rethink the process when I am asked to enter this info since the Mac Defender malware became an issue with Mac. Just wanted to know if this procedure occurs with all software updates or is it selective based on the type of update? This time is concerned Airport. Thanks for any insight.

Are you running as an Admin User or non-Admin? ie. have you set your Mac up with multiple user accounts - one as an Admin and one as a Standard user?
For security, you are better off having an Admin user account that has Admin privileges and a Standard user account that you use from day to day with standard privileges. When you install system updates you will be required to enter an Admin name and password, and any software that needs access to the system will require an Admin name and password, but anything that you install just for your user account that doesn't require total system access will be able to be dragged and dropped into your Application folder as per usual.
MacDefender runs in a web browser - that should be a huge red flag! If you see a warning when you are running Safari or another web browser close the browser window or Force Quit it. (under the Apple Menu => Force Quit...) In Safari Preferences untick Open "safe" files after downloading. (It will prevent an installer from automatically launching if something nasty is downloaded to your machine.) MacDefender and its variants attempt to trick people into installing stuff that will compromise their system. If something pops up unannounced on your machine that you didn't download, close it and delete it.
This article goes into depth about the MacDefender Malware:
    http://rixstep.com/2/20110610,00.shtml
The salient points are summed up in the "Recapitulate" section at the bottom of the article: It's a bit Hipster Geeky.
    "To Recapitulate
As recounted elsewhere, the Mac Defender attack is a well thought out attack that may have taken months to get together. The first step was to compromise websites of eejits, hack their FTP accounts, and upload dynamited files to their servers.
Then followed the Google whacks which led to people clicking on links they'd provided at the sites they'd hijacked.
And then finally they uploaded Mac Defender so people would get hit by it. And the purpose of Mac Defender is to scare you into thinking you're infected so you pull out your credit card.
Then the hackers run away with your credit card info and buy mink coats and chinchilla coats or whatever they want.
But staying clear of Mac Defender is really easy and doesn't require any AV software.
Don't ever open anything you didn't want to download.
Turn off JavaScript when accessing any Google Images site.
Make sure you don't have Safari set to automatically open downloads."
I'd add, keep your software up to date. Especially Adobe's Flash Plug-in as this is no longer supplied in system updates by Apple and could become an attack vector in the future. Always download software from reputable sources - ie. when downloading the Flash plug-in, get it from Adobe directly - don't follow a link from a website that tells you your version of Flash is out of date.
Enable your Firewall in System Preferences => Security => Firewall. Click on the Advanced button and Enable Stealth Mode too.
    Also under:
System Preferences => Security => General.
Disable Automatic Login. Require a password to unlock each System Preferences pane. Use secure virtual memory. Automatically update safe downloads list.

  • Account shortname and admin name don't match-password is not accepted

I had accidently changed my home name in the finder window. To fix this (so my files would show) I used NetInfo Manager to change the admin and user values. Now when I have tried to install a new program, the admin name does not show, and when trying both names (new and old) neither work with the password.
I used the install disc to reset the password, but it didn't help. In NetInfo Manager, the password (asterixs) shows longer than the password I chose...
Please help me fix the password situation. Thanks.

To fix this (so my files would show) I used NetInfo Manager to change the admin and user values.
If you change the name(not home) property of an administrator account without updating the membership of the admin group, that account will lose administrator access to the machine; it is possible to create a situation where there are no administrator accounts on the machine through this method. In this case, follow these instructions on one of the accounts which previously had administrator access.

  • Admin name and password says invalid EVERYTIME

hi, i'm trying to download the trial for photoshop, and when i wanted to start the set up, it said +'type an administrator's name and password to allow setup to make changes'+, so i typed in the admin name and password that i type in when i'm logging in (when turning on the macbook) and
it just keeps saying its invalid. ('sorry, you entered an invalid username or password')
the same happened with everything else i tried to download.
    PLEASE HELP

You've undoubtedly "lost" you admin account. To make sure open System Preference->Accounts and look at your account in the left corner and it should say "admin" below it. If it doesn't you've lost it. It's a Leopard bug.
Have a look at this Apple KB article for regaining those privileges.

  • I know the password, but I forgot my admin name

I am 100% sure about the password. I can change the password (which requires the old password, and if I can change it, then the password is accurate) but I don't know the admin name. Before i installed the Mavericks update, the name was automatically there when I was applying changes that required authorization, but now it doesn't appear, and I can't do nothing. When I go to Users & Groups on System Preferences, on the left sidebar there's just two usernames. pedro (standard) and Guest User. I tried everything on the admin name. pedro, root, admin, apple, and I don't know what to do. Please, help.

Is pedro an standard account or an admin account?

  • Changing admin name

my laptop recently needed fixed and they put in a new hardrive but when they reinstall the software etc they put in an admin of my dad since he took it 2 get fixed and i dont want him as my admin. i was going 2 use the reinstall cds 2 get new accounts but they installed os x tiger 2 my laptop and i dont want 2 lose that. no matter wat i do, even changing the admin name 2 the name i want it as, the short name stays the same and then everything goes back 2 the other name. when i try 2 send files that r on my desktop over msn, it doesnt come up my desktop but this other admin name and the files i want 2 send arent coming up as they r on my desktop and not this admin name. can ne1 plz help me change this admin account?

If you have the disks that came with your macbook just reinstall from them. They have tiger on them
If you do this I suggest doing a custom install. This will allow you to get rid of stuff you don't want or need. Extra language files take up around 2 gb. Then there are the 2 demo programs.
This will set you back to when you first got your MacBook and you can set the admin and shortname the way you want.

  • Admin name/password when shutting down

Here's a weird one. Just got a MacBook and transferred data/settings etc. from iBook using firewire. Everything seems to work, except: when multiple users are logged in, and I try to shut down, it asks for Admin name/password in order to shut down. Same as iBook, except the MacBook doesn't recognize either the name of the Admin or the password (don't know which). The admin password worked for installing software updates, so I'm totally confused. I reset the admin password using the install disc, but it still doesn't recognize the name or password. Anyone have a clue to help? Log in password works, as does the app. install (as I mentioned).

    Thank for the hint, James!
There was a problem with an "extra" user logged in - "_xcsbuildd ".
"sudo xcrun xcscontrol --reset" completely removes the Xcode Service including the _xcsbuildd user.

  • Update to OS X 10.9.5 - Admin name & p/w?

I'm trying to do the update for my iMac, but it's prompting me for admin name and password.
I know my apple ID and p/w, but it's not working. Should it be?

You should always know that password as it's the key to getting in sometimes. Keep it in a secure location, however in the event this occurs again then you can reset the password. Here are instructions for Mavericks. OS X Mavericks: Reset a login password

I stupidly lost my admin name and password on my Westell 9100EM.  Is there any way to reset the password?  I believe that the name is still 'admin".  If not, how do I reset the 9100EM to factory defaults and does that change anything other than the changes that I made?  Thanks in advance for your help.
