Admin password problems

i just bought a mac book yesterday and there appears to be an admin password already associated with my computer. As I'm sure you understand this makes it a bit tough to install new hardware etc. I don't know what to do because i can't even reinstall the operating system. Can someone please please help me.

Follow the last set of instructions in this article. You will need the MacBook's installation disks.

  • Safari, parental controls or admin password problem?

My grandson was able to access ** sites and add them to his bookmark bar. When asked for the admin password he typed it in wrong 3 times and then it said try again later, he clicked ok and then the add to bookmarks window appeared and he added it. I am using Safari 4. He should not be able to add anything without my password (that he does not have) I tried it and that is how he did it.
Is the problem Safari or is it the admin password box?

I have Safari 4.0.2, Mac OS X 10.4.11, all updates.
    I have a 10-year old daughter.
I use the Parent Controls for her Managed account to enable certain websites she can go to. If the website is not part of the Bookmark Bar, she can't go to that website.
    That was under Safari v3.x.
In Safari v4.x, with Parental Control mode enabled, go to any website. It is, at first, denied.
Click the "Add Website" button, cancel the Password dialog, you'll get the add to Bookmark
dialog. Click cancel and the website is STILL added to the bookmark. It does this especially when you have a folder on the Bookmark bar. Safari v4 will add the website to folders in the Bookmark bar on the first go-round.
My daughter inadvertently figured this out. She started trying odd names for websites,
including sex.net. She then clicked on a link at that website and, going through the process above, added it and went to the website.
It was only after she shrilled when she saw the images that I came over and saw what she had seen and learned how she got there.
I did searches on this issue and found many others noting that the security Parental Control in Safari v4 simply does not work. (e.g. this Apple discussion).
You've got some explaining to do, Apple.

  • Admin password problem.

My wife asked me to update her G3 iBook os from 10.3 to 10.4.
Ran into trouble when we couldn't recall the admin password.
Tried nothing (return w/o typing), ibook, apple, and a few others to no avail.
It was bought used, so we don't have a startup disc. Any ideas for changing this (other than buying her a newer Mac)?

Are you able to start up from the Mac OS X 10.4 Install disc?
If so, you should be able to follow the instructions for resetting the password in OS X 10.4, found here:

    Hi BigWillP
I will be happy to help you.
If you mean the password for the printer itself then I will private message you with the reset for the printer. It will also take the printer off the network and you will have to reconfigure the network again if it  is setup on a wireless network.

  • HAD PROBLEM INSTALLING LOOKOUT 6.0.2. LOST ADMIN PASSWORD.

I have been emailing Ryan Shi about a Lookout OPC fieldpoint problem where
OPC fieldpoint stops communicating.  He has informed me that there is a patch  but  I have to install lookout6.0.2.  I had a problem doing this.
I was able to load the new version of lookout  but the  administrator password was  altered  during the install.  I  restored my system to an earlier version.  How can I perform this  update without this problem occuring?
    Thanks,
    Gene

    Gene,
    What's your current lookout version?
If it is 6.0.0 or 6.0.1, you'd better install 6.0.2 first and then apply the patch. Before you install 6.0.2, backup this file C:\WINDOWS\system32\lookout.sec and then delete it. The installation will generate a new lookout.sec file with empty password. The admin password by default is empty. What you need to do next is to reset all the users and passwords.
In general, the password is stored in lookout.sec and won't be changed during uninstall and install, however maybe your lookout.sec is corrupted.

  • Problem Resetting Admin Password

UGH, So I forgot my admin password and followed the directions online, or at least I tried. The problem was that in doing so, I could not figure out how to reset the password without re-installing snow leopard 10.6.3 . I now think that I did something wrong because I cannot find the ITunes icon on my desktop and some other icons are not showing up as previous. Help! Do I need to uninstall or something? I'm not very computer savvy so I need detailed instructions!

    Hi there!
To reset your SPA device to the factory default values, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Disconnect the Ethernet cable
Step 2: Access the voice menu (****) and press 73738#.
Step 3: Login with the username "user" when accessing to
http://spa-ip-address OR login with "admin" when accessing
    http://spa-ip-address/admin/.
NOTE: Resetting your unit will erase all the configuration settings. If your SPA device was provisioned by a service provider, the reset function might be password protected. Contact your VoIP provider.

  • Problems with admin password

Just purchased a MacBook Pro and changed admin password. I thought everything was fine but after I restarted, it won't accept it. Apple told me the only thing I can do now is to reinstall Mac OS X.
I used the start up disc to re-install, clicked on OS X and bundled software and it asked for admin. password!!!! I'm lost as to what to do as it won't accept my password.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

thank you Robert Newall, your directions worked.

  • Admin password reset problem. Help!

I just bought a used MBA (late 2010, 10.6.5), and I do not have the admin password. I also do not have the USB drive that came with it.
I would most like to perform a clean install, but at this point I would be happy just resetting the password.
    Here's what I've tried:
    - Tried booting from my Snow Leopard disk using Remote Install.  My disk has a version (probably 10.6.0) which is too early to work, apparently. The MBA has a kernel panic.
    - Tried looking for ways to set another admin account via terminal command. Can't find out how this is done without the existing admin password.
Any way to do this without the thumb drive and without a later version of the Snow Leopard disk?
    Charlie

See this Apple note on resetting the admin password. Under "resetting the original administrator account password" it discusses how to deal with changing with no DVD drive available.

  • Unable to install "Mavericks" as it asks for my 'Admin Password" and it does not work. Have not used it since I got my iMac in 2008. First upgrade to do so. Any solutions please?

I have a 2008 iMac which had Leopard initially and I have upgraded to each new OS without a hitch. I downloaded "Mavericks" and began the install, it asked me for my "Admin Password" which I have never ever used since I set the Mac up, I have it safely tucked away so entered it, it rejected it each time. Am sort of lost now, as if my "Admin P/W" does not work here can I go from here?
I have seen many others with this problem but so far most of the solutions seem to be for the "log in" or "User" password not the Admin one.
I am running Mountain Lion successfully.
I have my original disks as supplied and also a Snow Leopard install disk.
I have seen some info about fixing this via Lion Recovery partition which I must have due to using Mt Lion.
How can I repair this situation.
Thank you to all those who respond.

    Thanks for your reply.
I have visited both the sites you listed but it seems to me that the solutions mentioned are to fix the User or log in p/w's.They do not seem to refer to the admin one again.
I understand about it being just like other user accts but the fixes do not really refer to it only the above two.
I have no problem booting up my Mac, I do not use a log in p/w so my problem is with the Admin p/w that was set up back in 2008. This is what I need to reset etc.
I am quite confused over these pw's as to just what is what and I need to make sure I understand all before I get into deeper trouble following these links.
This Admin p/w that was set up has never been used and is the only p/w I have except for my Apple ID. All previous upgrades only required my user name log in which has no p/w set up.
I hope you can follow me here butI have read so much on this it is becoming very confusing about whcih p/w's are what.

  • Admin password won't work to install software

I'm trying to install Photoshop and when it gets to the point where it asks for the password, I enter it but the password box just disappears for a second and returns asking for the password again.  (I entered it several times with the same result each time.)  I'm certain that I'm entering a valid admin password and that permissions for the applications folder are set to read & write for admin and system.  Just to be sure I tried entering the password incorrectly and the box shook as it normally would when an incorrect password is entered.  Has anyone had a similar problem with Adobe products or installing any other software on Lion?
Also, I just installed Adobe Lightroom last night and it worked just fine.  And when I just tried to run the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool which also asks for a password and I'm having the same problem.  So I know that it's not just Photoshop but I don't know if it's just something to do with Adobe or maybe all software which requires an admin password to install.
Trying to repair permissions and run a virus scan now although I think these two options are unlikely to fix the issue...

It looks like repairing permissions did the trick.

  • After recovery, admin password filled in with "dots" and cannot delete or change it

    Hello.
I ran the Windows 7 updates yesterday, but only the necessary ones.  I did not install any of the optional ones.  After the updates completed, I turned the computer on and it was stuck in a loop cycle - starting windows, then the admin password log in box came up.  The box was fiiled in (with "dots" but too many to represent my password) and the screen just quickly flashed back & forth between the log in screen and "password incorrect".     I tried to switch user, and it flashed back to the admin log in.
I did a system recovery to factory defaults (after backing up all data)  using the recovery discs.  After recovery, the "Set a password for account" screen comes up with the box below "Type a password" filled in completely with dots.  I cannot erase them with the backspace or delete keys.  If I highlight it and then try erase it with backspace or delete, the cursor just moves to the right hand side of the password box, but it still doesn't delete the faulty password "dots" so that I can change it.
I tried to reboot by holding in the power button and then turning it back on.  After selecting country & language again, the same password screen come up.
It is stuck!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  I computer I have  is the HP TouchSmart 310 PC 1155-Y.
    Thank You!

That is curious with a Recovery.  First, try to reset the password using NTPassword.  Make the CD, boot to it  following the directions.  If that does not solve the signon problem, consider installing the OS from a regular Windows 7 disk of the same version, using the key from the COA sticker.
