Administration / Monitoring no agent

I want to be sure of this answer before I give it to my superiors.
Is there any type of administration or monitoring that can be done without an Intelligent Agent on the server that the database resides on (that you want to monitor)?
Regards
Tim

Hi Timothy
My name is Robert, and I am Oracle DBA 8 years ago. The answer to your question have two possibilities:
1. There are a different softwares for some enterprises to monitoring a entire IT enviroment. The most populars: HP Openview, IBM Tivoli, BMC Patrol, Nimbus,. etc. All of these like Oracle Grid Control install an agent in the machine that is monitored. The explanation is very simple. The agent is the program that collect the information and after send this information to central console. All softwares of this type work at same way. Other consideration is the size of this agent and the consume in cpu and memory of this agent. The agent of openview is in my experience a good example of performance , because work without affect the performance of the machine.
2. Other software that monitoring not work with agent, but the funcionality and possibilities are limited. An example is Quest Spotlight , that not work with a agent. This software install a schema user in oracle database .
The best solution is the 1.

  • Central System Administration - Monitoring question

We are trying to setup the Central System Administration/Monitoring in solution manager. However, when we go into the setup of the tasks, such as "Checking for ABAP Short Dumps", when we click on the "Start ST22" button, it doesn't do anything.
Has anyone had an experience with figuring out how to get those buttons to work and to connect directly into the system we are doing the task?
We did follow Note 128447 to setup the Trusted RFC's between the systems, but that doesn't seem to working correctly either. Could that be the reason that this isn't working correctly?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Hi,
May I know how did you configure your CEN monitoring, using agents, or using RFC.
And where you are checking the ABAP dumps on Workcenter?? will you able to get the other details like Job failure, if you click that, wil you able to reach the satellite system.
    and check below are available.
    SM_<SID>CLNT100_READ
    SM_<SID>CLNT100_TWM
    SM_<SID>CLNT100_TRUSTED
if you use RFC monitoring these 2 also required,
    <SID of the monitored_system>_RZ20_COLLECT
    <SID of the monitored system>_RZ20_ANALYZE
    Thanks,

  • Monitoring SMD Agent with CCMS

Hi gurues, I need to know if there is any way to monitor SMD Agent installed in an application server via CCMS CEN system on a Solution Manager.
Right now we have CEN Monitoring define on Solution Manager, and several SMD Agents over the whole landscape, and it is critical for us to get alerted when this SMD goes down, so we are thinking about monitoring through Solutin Manager, isthat possible or we must do it in another way?
    Regards
    Gustavo

It's so typical SAP; I was looking for exactly the same question. SAP changed from 7.1 the OSCOL to run by the host agent instance and will not install the OSCOL to the SAP instance. You also will not be able to download OSCOL separatly.
But OSCOL is needed to monitor processes on host side. If the host agent don't starts also the OSCOL will not start (on LINUX side) and so you are not be able to monitor the SMD process.
The only chance is to start the SMD via init script.
A better way would be to implement a GRMG availability monitoring; this can be implemented in the CEN system independent from the monitored host. In the first solution the host has to be create itself the basis to monitor itself... that's nonsense.
I absolutly don't understand why SAP always and everywhere ignore his own design concept and reinvent the wheel. It would be so easy to design and implement the availability moniroring on SAP development side but they don't have a focus on that. It is the same with SAP router connection via host agent to the CEN system. It was implemented as very last feature after a lot of disgruntled customers (administrators).

  • Can monitor SCCM agent health through SCOM, monitor logs like CCMeval and setup alerts

Can monitor SCCM agent health/inactive agents through SCOM, monitor logs like CCMeval and setup alerts

You can find some management packs here:
    http://systemcenter.pinpoint.microsoft.com/en-US/applications/search/Operations-Manager-d11?q=
There are other sites as well but this is the MS page for hosting MP's.  The default SCCM 2012 Management pack for SCOM 2012 is pretty functional, this page talks a little bit about it:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2012/12/11/monitoring-configmgr-2012-with-opsmgr.aspx
If I remember correctly, it does NOT include a lot of client monitoring but I could be wrong.  It might take some custom monitor creation or management pack downloads to get exactly what you're wanting.  If I can find something like that
I'll add it to this post.
A good rule of thumb that I live by with SCOM, in case the product is new to you, is to save all your changes and customizations to the SCCM management pack in a custom-created management pack.

  • Any way to monitor "task agents"?

Forte system agents only seem to go down to the resolution of
partitions, each of which may be actually be running multiple tasks. I
have an application with several concurrent event loop tasks, all within
the same partition, which communicate asynchronously using Forte events.
My problem is I have a very slow (many hours) memory leak which doesn't
seem to be tied to any of my application objects. I suspect that one of
these tasks may be "stuck," causing it's event queue to grow -- slowly
-- until the partition is finally wiped out with an "out of memory"
exception. I would love to be able to monitor the sizes of these event
queues over time for the individual tasks, but with all posting and
receiving happening inside a single partition, I don't believe I ever
come in contact with the partition's distributed object or communication
managers. The TOOL hook via the TaskHandle sounded promising, but seems
to yield very little diagnostic information.
Anybody know of a way to monitor intra-partition event traffic?
    Thanks!

    Several options come to mind.
Have your child use the iPad only with adult supervision if they cannot be trusted to use in the way you wish.
Delete the games from the iPad and set restrictions so that apps cannot be downloaded.
Use Guided Access to restrict them to the one app you want them to be able to use.

  • How to reproduce the interface of Home/Administration/Monitor Activity

    Hi,
In order to recreate an environment like the administration panel of APEX 4.1,w which template needs to be used?
Specifically, in order to produce a menu system using Lists similar to the one at page: http://localhost:7777/apex/f?p=4350:22 whar combinations of Regions/ Lists can be used?
    Thanks

It depends on the security level of the interface. The graph will show the interface with the lowest level. If there are 2 interfaces with the same security level then it will go alphabetically.
    Please rate if this helps.

    Hi Experts,
In our Producion system,When i check the Monitoring tree I found the below component in Red Status.
    Root -> Services -> Portal -> Portal Runtime -> Loaded Applications (366 Applications )
I see that Loaded Applications tree is in Red status. When i go to configuration Tab for this tree i see the the threshold
value for Red is maintained as 300.
Could you please confirm if this is normal or is it a matter of concern ?
Does this signify that we have lot many applications deployed with respect to our current portal Configs..
Two weeks back we have faced a situation wherein our portal system got hanged that no one was able to login and we have restarted our server to rectify the problem.I want to know if the above problem is due to above alerts being thrown in VA monitoring.

  • Monitor Live Agent Activity NOWS?

coming from the NW world to Linux I still have a lot to learn. I liked
being able to view the live PO or GWIA in NW but it doesn't appear you can
do so in NOWS. When our consultant installed our new server he did have
some live Groupwise monitor windows open but he turned them off once it was
confirmed our system was functioning normally. I believe there was a
startup switch to get the views he had open.
What are those startup switches and is that the ONLY way to view the live
GroupWise system? I've had to revert to viewing the static web pages for
viewing GroupWise stats and logs, would much prefer a live view as well.
Currently running GW 7.03 and NOWS v9 patch level 12/16/2005 OES SP2

  • SQL Management Pack Agent Job Unit Monitors

I am trying to utilize the SQL Agent Job Monitors included with the SQL Management Pack (page 81 of the MP guide), particularly the "Last Run Status" monitor. I have set an Override for "Generate Alerts" to True. The goal
is to have an email notification sent when any SQL Agent job fails on a specific group of computers. However, I am not familiar enough with what "Last Run Status" is actually monitoring and if it will do what I am looking for. Does this monitor
check the job status of any agent job on the target group? I tried setting up a job for it to fail, which it does fail, but it does not generate an alert. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

    1) For monitoring SQL server job status, you can refer to the following blog
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2011/08/05/how-to-monitor-sql-agent-jobs-using-the-sql-management-pack-and-opsmgr.aspx
    2) For troubleshoot: Make sure that your SQL agent job is discovered, you may find the discovered job under Microsoft SQL Server --> SQL Agent --> SQL agent job status. By default, the discovery is disabled and you should enabled the discovery by using
    override.
    Roger
Thanks. So I enabled Agent Job discovery for the systems that I want. It discovered those objects. Now, I still cannot get the alerting to work. I can see the Health State of the job change to a Warning, indicating "Last Run Status" equals Failed, but
it is not generating an alert. I set Overrides (Generates Alert = True) on a Group that included one of the job objects, nothing. I also set the same Override directly on the job object and I still do not receive an alert. Any ideas? I
noticed someone in the comments mentioned in the blog you linked, a similar issue, except with the Job Duration monitor. However, he was able to get alerts to generate by setting the Override directly on the Job object and noted that it is not a
feasible solution due to the number of jobs he wants to monitor. Again, I tried the same, but still could not get alerts. That solution would not be acceptable for me either because of the number of jobs that I would have to set individual Overrides for.

  • Span-Based Monitor of IPPA Agents at remote site for UCCX 9X

I understand to be able to monitor/record agents using IPPA (for UCCX), you need to utilize Span-based monitoring as opposed to Desktop Monitoring. According to the SRND, it also states that there should be no routing devices between agent phone (IPPA) and UCCX server which means no routers in between. Question I have is if I put the failover UCCX at the same location as the IPPA agents, would this work? I understand there might be an issue with redundancy with this scenario. Thoughts?

It is possible without QM. When using desktop monitoring, the phone is configured to Span to PC port. The agent must be running CAD and the PC running it must be attached to the PC port on the phone. CAD sees the spanned packets from the phone and then forwards them to the recording service on the CCX server. The big gotcha is that the NIC in the PC must not discard 802.1q-tagged packets. If the NIC discards them instead of forwarding them into the NDIS stack, CAD will never see them. Sometimes this takes a Google search and a registry setting change to fix if it doesn't work at first.

  • Agent monitoring solution help!

    Hi all
Just going to run this by you all if I may.
Is it possible to remote monitor an agent (ipcc Express Prem) whose pc is not on our network and not attached to the phone.
The phones and agent desktop sit on our network but the pc's sit on 3rd party network, this is not going to change.
All the documents I have read suggest the pc needs to be attached to the phone or use rspan vlans which is also not an option.
Think I already know the answer but are looking for inspiration.
    Thanks
    Rich

Only if you can SPAN the voice VLAN of that phone (no layer three hops) directly into CCX server. On the Windows versions you use the second NIC for this. With Linux, the first NIC and it must be attached to a switch that supports two-way traffic on a SPAN destination.
If SPAN isn't viable then you would need to use Cisco Quality Management or another recording product (there is a boatload of them) that supports Built In Bridge-based recording. Sometimes this is also referred to as Network Recording.

  • Manually Installed Agent is not showing up in the Operations Manager Console Under Pending Management.

    Hi Community,
I submitted this question because I'm a bit stuck with SCOM 2012 R2, I'll try to explain briefly what is happening right now in my environment,  we have a DEV SCOM Deployment in which all the roles are installed in a single server, this servers is a
VMware machine running Windows Server 2008R2.
The Initial installation of the SCOM Operations Manager and all the other components was not performed by me but by a co-worker, unfortunately he doesn't remember much about the initial configuration. So i had to pickup where he left things about a year
ago, neither of us are SCOM experts, and we have almost no previous experience with previous versions of this application.
Now the problem that I'm facing is the following, all the DEV Servers are Domain Controllers and one of the indication within the "Guide for System Center Management Pack for Active Directory for Operations Manager 2012" states the following
    Configuration
    Supported?
    Agent-less monitoring
    No
After my first review I notice that our servers were being monitor by agent-less mode and given the above statement from the Operations Guide the only way that we could ever get those domain controllers monitor by SCOM would be by installing the agent on
each server, so I read somewhere (Can't remember where) that in order to install the agents in all the servers I should first remove them from the Agent-less node, which I did. Then I tried to use the discovery wizard to get the agent install in all of them
but it didn't matter how many times I try the servers never show up.
I read in a Tech Net Article that you had to modify the security settings so SCOM would let me decide if I wanted to approve it or not.
    --> http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212853.aspx
I performed the suggested steps from the article but still the servers were not showing up, not even if I run the Discovery wizard, so I decided to go and perform the installation manually in a couple of servers I was able to install the agent in one of
the Domain Controllers, I configured the agent to use a service account that has Domain Admin rights. An hour after I installed the agent I went back to the Operations Console Manager and I check under Pending Action but the Server was not showing up. So i
went back to the Internet to try to find out if someone else had experience the same problem, and in one website some mentioned that if the servers were not showing up it was probably because they were still register in the SCOM Database, now I have no idea
of how i can check that or How can i remove them from there to have them available again, but what troubles me the most is that even after i installed the agent manually the server were not being recognize.
I went to the Event Viewer and I found one particular event that caught my attention, see below :
    Log Name:      Operations Manager

        <Data>The RPC server is unavailable.</Data>
      </EventData>
    </Event>
Not sure if this is related to the problem that I'm facing right now, but , I make sure that the RPC Services were running and also the related dependencies too. There's no Firewall enable in any of the servers and DNS seems to be working properly.
Ports 135 / 5723 are open and listening so since I ran out of ideas, I would like to know if some of the experts in this field could perhaps give me some guidelines.
There's one caveat that I haven't mention yet and that is related to SQL, I checked and my user just has read access to SQL i'm not sure if that could affect this but i think is worth mentioning.
My main goal is to have all the servers showing up in the Operations Manager Console.
So thanks all in advance !
    Oscar Loria

So you can ping and nslookup from your ms to these agents and vice versa right?  I wouldn't do a manual install, I would push the agent from the management server.  You can uninstall the agent manually, or use cleanmom to get rid of them.  Then
do an install from the console.  When you initiate the install from the console (management server), should it run into any issues it will dump out an error which will give you an idea of where the problem may be.

    1.  Ensure agent push account has local admin rights
    2.  Firewall is blocking NetBIOS access.  If Windows 2008 firewall is enabled, ensure “Remote Administration (RPC)” rule is enabled/allowed.  We need port 135 (RPC) and the DCOM port range opened for console push through a firewall.
