Administrator account: Permissions issues

I am working on a PowerShell based utility that I have working fine in Windows 7, but Windows 8 support is giving me some trouble. there are a number of features that work fine with a "regular" Admin account in Windows 7, but require the "Real"
Admin account in Windows 8. However, that raises an issue and a question.
1: I have the local Administrator account active on the Windows 8.1 VM. However, I am now unable to connect to the share on my demo "server" (actually a Windows 7 Home VM) The share is configured for Full Control for Everyone. I assume I don't
need to enable the Administrator account on the server, given the intended behavior of Everyone. But could these local Admin accounts require that? Or is there a different setting that would support access to a share with the local admin account while NOT
enabling said account on the server?
2: The intention is for the PowerShell script to be run either by shortcut while logged in as Administrator or via SCCM. The latter is not my area of expertise, so I am wondering, can IT initiate a PowerShell script with elevated privileges via SCCM without
the need for the local Administrator account? I assume so, as enabling the account on every machine seems like a lot of work and less security, which is not an IT goal. :)
Thanks!
Gordon

Hi Gordon,
First, I would like to confirm that if there is any credential created on your share. Is there any error appeared when your access the share?
Besides the credential issue, we also need to consider the network or firewall factors.
You can first check the network settings in this article:
Why can't I connect to other PCs?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-HK/windows-8/cant-connect-other-pcs
Also, you can try to disable firewall on Windows 8 to see what’s going on.
For your second issue, you can refer to this article:
PowerShell: Run via SCCM with Administrative rights.
http://ultimaforsan.squarespace.com/logs/2012/3/7/powershell-run-via-sccm-with-administrative-rights.html
Hope these could be helpful.

  • SharePoint 2013 Administrative Account Permissions

I'm looking for documentation about the permissions needed to administrate SharePoint Server 2013. My administrative account needs to have access to Central Administration, web applications, PowerShell, and local server resources like the file system, event
    logs, services, etc.
I have found several articles that I had hoped would have the information but do not:
Plan for administrative and service accounts in SharePoint 2013 literally has the sentence:
This article does not describe security roles and permissions required to administer in SharePoint 2013.
This upsets me as I am looking for the documentation that does describe the roles and permissions required to administer in SharePoint 2013 and this line offers no help other than telling me what I need isn't here. For anyone from the documentation
team that happens to read this I offer the feedback that following that sentence there should be a link to the documentation that I am asking about here (assuming it exists ;)
Initial deployment administrative and service accounts in SharePoint 2013 details permissions for the setup user account which is like an administrative account except that in my
case the farm has been set up and I need to have administrative accounts.
Account permissions and security settings in SharePoint 2013 describes the permissions accounts and groups are granted on individual resources on the server. While this is informative,
it doesn't describe what rights I need to grant an account so it can administer.
Use Windows PowerShell to administer SharePoint 2013 describes the permissions needed to run Add-SPShellAdmin to grant others administrative access, but doesn't actually
describe the permission needed to use PowerShell to administrate.
    Does this information exist publicly?

Partner Support has confirmed there is no documentation that details specific rights needed for specific administration tasks. Given how the permissions depend on the task and how many tasks there are I don't see this ever appearing in official public documentation.
I did some testing and I was able to use PowerShell as a non-admin, but I was limited to accessing objects that don't require the admin rights. For example I couldn't get the farm object (I get an exception) or the search service application (Get-SPEnterpriseSearchServiceApplication
returns null), but I could list site collections and sites. Again, certain tasks require certain rights and this totally makes sense given the ability to delegate permissions built into the SharePoint platform.
So where does this leave me? For now I suppose it needs to be tested on a case-by-case basis.
For users who I want to administrate a farm with PowerShell, who have the ability to log into the servers to check local resources, services, logs, etc. practically they need to be local administrators and have SPShellAdmin. For anything else I would be
looking at creating an account with no rights and gradually add permissions until I get to a level where it can perform the required tasks. If I want an account to manage site collections I may need Remote Desktop User machine group, SPShellAdmin against the
content database, and site collection administrator (at the moment this is a guess).
So in the end it seems there is no definitive answer or broad best practice for assigning permissions to administrators beyond testing it out to see what works and hiring administrators who you trust and are accountable for their actions.

  • Managed Account permissions issues after all third party updates

I run a lab with 34 student accounts that are "Managed" using 10.5.7. I have given students permission to use specific software and all aspects of the software in Accounts/Parental Controls. When I update Microsoft Office or Adobe CS4, I have to go into every single student account and into each individual program to "always allow" which is about 10 programs for each machine. Of coarse all the checkmarks in the parental controls are already checked off for the student account when I check under parental controls?
Anybody having this issue. This happens on both Intel and PowerPc's.
This happens on fresh installs of Leopard to disks that have been zeroed out, on updates from Tiger and on CC cloned machines.
I have of coarse repaired all permissions before and after the updates.
It is extrememely laborious to have to do this after small incremental updates to third party software.
Actually, I've had to do it with Safari as well. It may not just be a third party issue.
One things for certain. It is ****.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Is DW installed on a server or is it installed on a user's desktop?  If it is installed on a server then it won't install properly because it is not designed to be run from a server because of licensing issues.  Adobe can't allow you to use one user license and then installing on a server and so used by 100 other users. When you reply please also state your operating system.

After trying to change permissions on my computer so others on my network can grab files, my external Hard Drive has a lock on it and I can't access files. I've tried repairing permissions, logging in under another Administrator account, using Terminal to fix the problem, downloaded BatChmod but nothing works… Any other suggestions? I have an Imac running OS10.6.8.

There is suddenly a lock icon on my external backup drive!

  • Permissions issues w/multiple accounts

I am running snow leopard, and have two user accounts. I have my main admin account (User 1), and a second account(User 2). I have set up the second account to run with minimal processes running, to increase cpu availability, as I use this account for audio editing. However, I like to be able to read and write to this account from my main account. The problem though, is that as soon as I set my main account (User 1) to have either read only, or read/write access to the other account (User 2), I have to type in an admin password anytime I want to move or delete anything inside user 2's account +when I'm logged into the User 2 account+. --- I'm giving my main account (User 1) access indirectly by setting the "everyone" group to read or read/write.
I know its probably not typical to give one account, or in this case "everyone" full recursive read/write permission to another entire user directory, but it shouldn't cause problems should it? Once I set it back so that "User 2" is read/write and "everyone" is no access, I no longer have to enter an admin password to delete user 2's files when I'm logged in as user 2.

It may suit your purposes better to partition the disk so that you have 2 separate volumes, with one for editing. There wouldn't be a permissions issues that way, or logging in or out.
If physical security is not a concern and you really want to keep your accounts the way they are, try running chmod 666.
Launch Terminal and type chmod 666 at the prompt, then press Return.
Log into your second account and do the same.

  • Sharing files between user accounts without permissions issues

I have two user accounts on my iMac and need to make files available to both accounts, back and forth, without having to worry about permissions issues. Files need to be read and edited from both accounts.  I posted previously about this and was told to place the files in Users/Shared.  I've done this but it hasn't accomplished what I need.
I created a document in one account and saved it to Users/Shared, but when I opened the document from the other account and tried to edit it, I was told that I didn't have permission to edit and that I needed to duplicate the file.  How can I avoid having to set permissions for files that I need to edit from both user accounts?

    Or not.
I butt up against this lunacy frquently.
I have just created a file saved to my external NAS - no problem - tried to save my edits - now don't have permission to do so.  Again - checked - custom access - again.  Ridiculous.
Why can Apple not sort out this fundamental problem - if I create a file and put it on my network where I WANT IT - the OS should not then prevent me from accessing it.
I spend hours, regularly, trying to sort this out.  Apple OS is a joke.
And to be kept being told - do this, do that, use terminal, reset passwords is ridiculous.
    Sorry for the rant.
    But this is the limit.

It also crashes frequently running ad-related JavaScript on a financial newspaper's web site. Resetting all iTunes preferences hasn't fixed this and neither has running on another account on the same computer. My private MacBook Pro is fine. I suspect a corrupt file somewhere (I have repaired permissions).

  • "screen shot can't be saved" and other permissions issues

After having my iMac at the Apple Store for four days solving a problem with "quit unexpectedly" issues with all Apple built-in Apps on OS X Yosemite, I got the machine back with those problems solved.  It involved re-installing OS X and restore files from backup.  I thought all was well; the Genius Bar dude showed me that it's fixed. He said it took so long because of bizarre permissions issues he'd never seen before.
Now that I've lugged this 40lb machine back home (after verifying the fixes in the store) I now find that several (other) functions don't work.  When I try to do a screenshot, I get this message:"Your screen shot can't be saved.  You don't have permission to save this file in the location where screen shots are stored."  Message could have been more helpful; the "location" is the desktop.  Pretty descriptive, though.  Seems I can't save anything to the desktop.
I tried creatng a folder on the desktop.  Got this message: "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this".  Type password and new folder appears.  Drag the new folder to the trash, get same message..
I tried copying a file from a network drive to the desktop. I get this dialog: "Modifying Desktop requires and administrator name and password.  I clicked "authenticate" and after a 3 minute delay (with "Preparing.." ) I get this dialog; "Finder wants to make changes.  Type your password to allow this".  I type the password and the file appeared on the desktop.  Before the work at the Apple Store, this never happened.  BTW I have only one user account and it's marked "Allow user to administer this computer".  Thinking something might be goofy with the pw, I changed it (took 3 minutes to do, oddly) and rebooted. No joy. Same thing happens when I try to drag something from the desktop to the trash.  Long time "moving" message followed by having to provide and admin pw.
I tried to save a Safari attachment to the Downloads folder and got this message: "Safari could not download the file xxxxx because there is not enough free disk space".  Since I have more than 600GB of available space, I think the message is wrong and that it's really a permission issue with the Downloads folder.
Tried to reset the password again.  Click to unlock the Users & Groups panel, get "System Preferences is trying to unlock Users & Groups preferences.  Type your password to allow this".
All this tells me that somehow Yosemite is in "nag" mode (reminiscent of Windows Vista.
    Any ideas?
    Chaz

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 installed on Mac Mini OS X 10.9.5. Application running successfully on bot main user and administrative accounts for considerable time with no warning messages. When established a new user account on same computer and try to call up

Photoshop Elements 11 installed on Mac Mini OS X 10.9.5. Application running successfully on bot main user and administrative accounts for considerable time with no warning messages. When established a new user account on same computer and try to call up elements receive message “Some ot the application components are missing from the Application directory. Please reinstall the application.” How do I correct this problem without disturbing application in main user account?

Brooks lansing if you create a new Administrator account does the same issue occur?  If so then it is likely that there is a file permission failure and file permissions have been set for the existing Users instead of the groups they belong to.
Have you removed and reinstalled Photoshop Elements 11?  This may reset the file permissions to the correct state to allow it to work under new accounts.

  • Unable to enroll fingerprints for the Win7 built-in Administrator account

In Windows 7 I tried to enroll fingerprints for the built-in Administrator account, but doing so failed every time with the error message The enrollment could not be completed.
I could not find a solution online and the Validity software was working just fine, as there were no issues with other users on the same system. As a work-around, I created another account with administrator privileges and enrolling the fingerprints worked just fine. My guess is that the permissions for the built-in Administrator account are different from any administrator account you can create yourself. What I noticed is that any self created account is part of the Users group, and that the built-in Administrator account is not part of this group. I'm not sure, but maybe this is the cause of the problem.
Anyway, I thought I would share my experience here, in case anyone else encounters the same problem.

    same issue in build 10049.
It would help to be more specific in the symptom description.  E.g. using Narrator may help.  (Win-Enter).  Does it say what you are "seeing" (or should be seeing)?
FWIW I think it is relatively easy to reproduce symptoms which are related to this thread's description using Narrator (Start Screen without Search bar, Search bar without Taskbar, or Search bar with Taskbar but without Start Menu
when the only time that the Search bar should appear is when the Start Menu is there, for example) so that could also help specify what your real symptom is.  BTW there are horrendous delays when using Narrator.

  • Msiexec /qn fails when its not run using the built-in local administrator account

    Hello all,
I am working on a project where I am trying to automate the deployment of VMs through a self-service portal.
Among other tasks such as clone VM, sysprep it, assign an IP, create AD computer object, join VM to domain and so on..., i need to install a few applications using msiexec, which is driving me crazy...
For this purpose, I am using a local user account part of the administrators group.
Please note, UAC is disabled on all the OS.
Basically, the msi installation works as expected on Windows 7 machines, however on Windows 8/2012, it fails due to lack of permissions. The curious thing is that if I use the built-in\administrator account instead for the deployment on those systems, the
    application is installed correctly.
I have tested some things such as: DisableMSI (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa368304%28v=vs.85%29.aspx), but although it progresses a bit further, it keeps failing.
Does anyone know what I can do to allow an user part of the administrators local group to be able to install using msiexec /qn?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Does it work if you use the account in local admin, and run the commands prompt as administrator to install the msi file? Please know that Only the built in administrator account has admin privilege by default. On other admin accounts you need

  • Permissions Issue causes Dreamweaver CS6 Menus to Crash the Application. Please Help!

I recently upgraded Adobe Web Premium CS5 to CS6. All of the include applications seem to run as expected, except for Dreamweaver which crashes when many of the pallet menu options are clicked.
The application when tested on a new user account will operate without crashing, and after contacting Adobe support, they referred me to the Apple/Mac Community for help, since they want to identify the issue as a permissions problem associated with my user account on my MacBook Pro.
With the many levels of permissions in many different locations, I'm at a loss as to what changes might be necessary to fix the problem. I did upgrade Java to the latest release in the hope that it would help, but it did not.
Any isight into this issue would be appreciated. After reading throught the Adobe Forum related to this application, I found other rmenu issues that were similar but manifested in slightly different ways, like certain options were not visible and users assumed that they were removed in the latest release.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’renot going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Permissions Issues or Just A Midlife Crisis?

A little background:  All of my computers are running Windows 8.1 Pro.  I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Printer.  I'm trying to setup scan-to-computer so I can scan from the printer's front panel to any computer on the network.
Here's the dilly:  I have two laptops which I installed the full feature driver on from HP's website.  I only use these computers with an administrator account.  There are no other user accounts on the computer.  Works flawlessly.  I'm able to login and scan something from the printer's control panel to the computer right away.
Here's where it gets a little hairy:  I have two desktops that I've installed the same full feature driver on from HP's website.  On each desktop there is an administrator account and two standard user accounts.  I login with the administrator account.  The software works flawlessly.  I'm able to scan-to-computer right away with no problems at all.  However, when I login to either standard user account I get the following "Scan to Computer is currently unavailable" dialog box everytime I restart the computer or logout and log back in:
During this time I'm unable to scan anything from the printer control panel to the computer as the printer will not find the computer on the network.  If I leave the dialog box up without dismissing it the message automatically changes to the following "Scan to Computer is enabled" within about a minute or so:
The dialog box stays up and I have to dismiss it everytime but after it changes to "scan to computer is enabled" I'm able to scan flawlessly to the standard user account without problems.  My question is how do I prevent this dialog box from happening?  Is it something on my end that needs fixed or a bug in the software that only HP can fix?  It seems like maybe I'm having a permissions issue somewhere since this dialog box doesn't pop up for the computer administrator accounts and only pops up for standard user accounts.

Thanks for all your responses and help on this.  I was able to resolve this issue on my own in case anyone was wondering (but you probably weren't judging by all your chattiness).
But in case you were here's what I did:  From each standard user account I had to open the printer software then click on "Utilities" at the top.  From there I clicked on "Printer Setup & Software" and was prompted for the administrator password which I entered.  Then click "Connect a New Printer" and follow the steps to connect a new printer.  Then I restarted the computer and the Scan to Computer dialog boxes for the standard users were gone and I could scan from the printer's front panel!

  • Problems with Administrator Account

I am presently using my G4 PowerBook while I am away in Australia. It is running system 10.4.11.
It is set up with three accounts: administrator, my wife's and a visitor's account. Both the administrator account and my wife's can administer the computer. The privileges for the visitor account are very limited.
During the last few days the administrator account is behaving very oddly. It allows only one window to be open at anytime. For example, if I am running Text Edit and I decide to bring up Safari, the Text Edit window will disappear although the programme continues to run in the background. I have tried running other pairs of programmes and the fault seems to be universal. When I cycle through open programmes by typing Command-Tab, all open programmes are represented.
Now when I open up my wife's account, the computer behaves normally and one can have multiple windows open and drag and drop as usual.
I have repaired permissions and run Disk Utiltiy from the original install disk. This process suggests that all is not well with the hard drive. When I ran Tech Tools, from the CD I obtained with my Apple Care, it suggested that the hard drive needed repair. I carried out the repair process and was told that everything was OK.
I hoped that the upgrade to 10.4.11 would sort out the problem but it has not done so. It is behaving as if there is a check box somewhere that allows for multiple windows that has become unticked. I have searched high and low but have not been able to find anything amiss. I use Macaroni which carries out regular Unix maintenance.
    Any clues, anyone?
    Many thanks in advance.
    David Amies

Ok, what I will get you to do is take each file I list below and drag it to the desktop, the log out and back in and test. Drag only 1 or 2 at once until the problem disappears. If after moving some files and testing and the issue persists, replace them in the preferences folder. If you pull multiple files to the desktop at once and the problem stops, replace them one at a time until it is apparent what file is the culprit.

  • Lion hangs when trying to log into the administrator account.

Hello, everyone. Just tonight I tried to log into my administrator account, but when I try to, it opens to a white screen and beachballs. I ran disk utility, rebuilt permissions, etc., but no luck logging in. Has anyone else had a similiar issue?

Hi, Nanotechie1992. I have another piece of the puzzle. I recently bought a Magic Trackpad a few days ago, and it has been working well. However, just a few minutes ago I disconnected it and tried to log in as an administrator. The cursor appeared normal and moved around normally with my Magic Mouse. However, it was just a plain white background, no menu, no dock, no icons. I suppose I can try to reinstall my ram cards, but I have had them since I bought the computer a few years ago.
