  • I don't know my administrative password macbook pro

I just downloaded osx mavericks and it's asking for an administrative password.  I don't remember ever putting one on, but I bought it with everything installed and moved over from mp old macbook pro so maybe the place I bought it put one on.  They have no record of that though so I can't do this installation.  How can I get that password?

If you have 10.6 installed, you should boot from your OS X install DVD (hold down C on boot up) and use the Reset password menu to change it.
If you have 10.7 or 10.8 installed, reboot from your recovery partition (hold cmd and R as you reboot), go to Terminal in the utilities menu, and type "resetpassword". Follow the directions.

  • Factory Reset without Admin Password, MACbook Air

    I have a Macbook air 10.9.4
I want to reset it to the factory settings. I do not know the admin password though. I tried doing to holding down command and R thing, but all that happened was a grey screen came up with a picture of a lock, and a block for a password to be entered in, but I don't have a password.... Please Help!!

It depends on the person, I suppose. But ordinarily Apple is pretty supportive of authorized persons only having access to a laptop's contents when the owner has set a firmware password.
One has to understand that a firmware password's purpose is to protect. It would serve no purpose if anyone could simply ask that the protection be removed. The service to remove the protection is a benefit only afforded to legitimate owners.
The seller should have released his registration the moment it was sold. This permits YOU to then register it to yourself. You should take care of this matter before taking it in.

I cant remember my administrator password. can anyone advise me how to reset the password without having the original? I have a MacBook Air - Mac OS X 10.6

  • Reset Administrator password on my Macbook Air

Can anyone help me?  I don't have the administrator access on my Macbook Air, 10.6.8 Snow Leopard!  It was given to me by my father-in-law because he never used it and now he can't remember the password.  I don't care if anything he put on there is lost, but I need to be able to have administrator access.  Help!

Determine if the following method will work for you:
Shut down your Mac and turn it back on while holding down the ⌘ and S keys at the same time until your see a black screen with white text. This is known as Single User mode.
You can skip the next step, but it is recommended that you do not because it will check your boot volume for errors and correct what it can:At the :/ root# prompt, type fsck -fy and press Return or Enter. It will take a few moments to complete. If you are concerned that nothing is happening just press the Return key until you see the :/ root# prompt again. Once the disk check is complete and the prompt returns, type mount -uw / and press Return / Enter.
Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist and press Enter. If you get an error message you may ignore it.
Type ls /Users and press Enter. All of the usernames on the computer will be listed, which is helpful if you don’t know or remember what these are.
Type dscl . passwd /Users/username password while replacing username with one of the users displayed in the previous step and replacing password with the new password of your choice. Press Enter. You will likely get an error message about a file or directory not being found. You may ignore this.
    Type reboot and press Enter.

You can reset your password with the install cd or usb ...
Follow these steps to reset a password when there is only one administrator account on the computer, or if the original administrator account needs a password reset. "Original" administrator account refers to the one that was created immediately after installing Mac OS X. If the original administrator password is known, that administrator account may be used to reset the passwords of other administrator accounts using the steps described above. These steps require an optical drive; if your Mac does not have an optical drive and you have a Mac OS X v10.6 Install disc, see below.
Start up from a Mac OS X Install disc (one whose version is closest to the version of Mac OS X installed).  Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C). Or, you can use Startup Manager or the Startup Disk preference pane to select the Install disc.
Choose a language, click the arrow button to continue,
Mac OS X v10.6 or later: Choose Password Reset from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.5 or v10.4: Choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu.
Mac OS X v10.3: Choose Reset Password from the Installer menu.

    Hello.
    try this
1- You have to restart your MBA holding down the Command+S keys, and this will take you into Single User Mode and it’s Terminal interface.
2- Then you have to check the filesystem. to do this you have to type the following command in the terminal interface:
    fsck -fy
3- Then you have to mount the root drive with write option enabled so you can apply and save any changes. Type this in the temrinal interface:
    mount -uw /
4- And then type this command exactly as you see it here:
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
5- Reboot your MBA by typing this in the terminal interface:
    reboot
6- After you reboot, you will be see the “Welcome Wizard” startup screen. Follow the wizard and create a new user account. This new account name must be different from the onewhose password you want to recover.
7- Continue and boot into your Mac OS X with the new account you have just created, this new user account is an Administrator and has administrative access
8- Now that you're logged in, go to System Preferences
9- Click on Users & Groups
10- Click on the Lock icon and use your newly created user name and password if asked. This will allow you to make changes to other user accounts
11- On the user panel select the user account whose password you have forgotten and then click on the Change Password... button.
    12- Enter your new password
13- Reboot/restart your MBA and now you can log back in with your old account. If you want you can delete the user account you created following this steps.
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck

  • How to prevent the regular password prompts when watching a movie on my MacBook Air?

    Hello everyone.
I recently started renting movies from the iTunes store and watched them on my MacBook Air since I don't have an appleTV. (In fact on my TV connected via HDMI cable to the MacBook but I think that doesn't change the cause)
Now every now and then a automatic password prompt kicks in overlaying the movie, so I have to stand up each time and type in the administrator password in the middle of the movie. This happens maybe about every 30-45 mins. Needless to say this is extremely unpleasant when watching a movie. Unfortunately I cannot tell you which programm causes the prompt since I always close all other programms other than iTunes.
Is there a way to temporarily prevent all automatic password prompts?
I hope you can help me,
    Greetings jonezdotcom

This is taken from Mac Help.  It should guide you in solving your issue.
Changing the way users log in
You can require users to enter a password to log in to your computer, or you can turn on automatic login, which automatically logs in a specified user each time the computer starts up.
Automatic login is useful if you’re the only person who uses your computer, and the computer is always in a safe and secure place. If you have more than one user account on your computer, or if you’re concerned about the security of information on your computer, you should require users to log in with a password. Automatic login is not available for accounts that are using FileVault encryption.
If you require users to log in, you can change what they see in the login window. You can show a list of users with a picture next to each name and a place to enter the password, or require users to enter both their user name and password.
To change the way users log in:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
    Open Accounts preferences
Click the lock icon to unlock it, and then type an administrator name and password.
    Click Login Options.
    Do one of the following:
To require users to log in whenever the computer starts up, choose Off from the “Automatic login” pop-up menu.
To have the computer automatically log in to a particular account when the computer starts up, choose the account from the “Automatic login” pop-up menu, enter an administrator password, and click OK.
IMPORTANT: Automatic login allows anyone to get immediate access to your computer simply by restarting it. If you turn on automatic login, make sure the computer doesn’t automatically log in to an account with administrator privileges.
Next to the ”Display login window as,” select how you want the login window to appear:
To have users select an account from a list in the login window, select “List of users.”
To require users to type their user account name and password, select “Name and password.”
To show each user’s password hint, select the “Show password hints” checkbox.
If you turn on automatic login for yourself, the computer opens your account when it starts up. If you log out, other users see a login window to log in to their user accounts.
The Login Options pane of Accounts preferences
Use the Login Options pane of Accounts preferences to change the way the login window behaves to be more secure or set up the way users will log in to their accounts
    PREFERENCE EXPLANATION
    Automatic login
To have the computer automatically log in to an account at startup, choose the account from the pop-up menu. This is less secure than requiring users to log in, since it allows anyone to use the computer just by turning it on.
To require users to select an account and enter a password to log in, choose Off from the pop-up menu.
Automatic login is not available for accounts that are using FileVault encryption.
    Display login window as
Select “List of users” to have users choose their accounts from a list in the login window.
Select “Name and password” to require users to type their name and password in the login window.
