Administrator's password doesn't work.

Hello.
As the only user I have only set one password during installation. This has worked to install applications as I understand it should - untill yesterday. Now I get an error message:
"Type an administrator's name and password to make changes to Finder"
I followed the instructions to reset the password by booting with the install disk and still get the error. Seeing the instructions in
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=742332&tstart=105
I looked at NetInfo Manager. There is no "admin" group but a "bill" group which is the short name I had set. It accepted the password to make changes but gave a message that I was not authorized to add a group.
So, how do I get this working again, preferably without single user terminal commands? I would appreciate any help.
Bill
PS: I haven't figured how to search for only answered topics. Including "This question is answered" didn't work.
PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thank you, J D. I tried that. After "passwd admin [return]" there was another prompt.
I typed "passwd admin (password) [return]" and there was a brief outline of syntax.
I typed "man passwd [return]" and saw that it was supposed to respond with a request for the old password. This didn't happen.
So I rebooted and got the same error message when attempting to install an application.
Is there a way to disable this password business. I don't need it and I am now confronted by a machine that has turned on its owner.
I would appreciate any help and soon before I loose the faith. ; )

  • Administrator Bios Password won't work on HP 4420s XT940UT#ABA Windows 7 64 Bit

Someone please help me with this!!
I bought this laptop from a friend (have a receipt) who sold it to me because the screen was cracked and all spidered out when you turned it on. Well everywhere he went to ask about getting the screen fixed it was very expensive ($250 - $350) and he said he would just get a newer laptop. So he sold me this one which is a HP4420s XT940UT#ABA Probook Model. About a week after I bought this Probook the friend who sold it to me died suddenly. This was sudden and terrible. Some time later I got around to buying the LCD screen for this model, replaced it myself (was very easy actually) and booted up the laptop with a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro edition 64 Bit. After installing all my software and using the laptop for quite some time now, I wanted to get into the Bios which I had never done. So when I started up the laptop, hit escape, then F10 to enter BIOS, there were two places to enter a password which is different then any Dell I've ever owned. One was mine I guees that I set up using HP protect tools and the other says BIOS/Administrator. Well I can make most changes using the one I set up with my password however my password doesn't work nor can I get into some of the very important changes I wanted to make using the Bios/Administrator, like turning on the LoJack, figuring out the hard disk lock etc, turning on turbo boost, fan controls, etc. Well Since the person I bought it from is no longer with us, there is no one to turn to for the answer to this Administrator/BIOS password question / problem.  I tried taking out the Rtype battery and resetting it that way, didn't work. I called HP multiple times and they sent me to a BIOS page to download the same BIOS I have already, wouldn't let me install it. When I bring up the command prompt and put in BiosConfigureUtility.exe nothing happens, just tells me wrong command. When I try to get into the BIOS going through the C: file into the SSM files, I reach the BiosConfigUtility.exe file, click on it to open and it just flashes a small command page way to fast to read what it says. I would like to have complete control over my laptop figuring I have so much time and money invested into it now. Could the problem have something to do with installing the 64 bit version of Windows 7 instead of the 32 bit I guess it originally came with? I have all the manuals and they say that this laptop is Windows 7 Pro Ultimate 64 bit compatible so that's what I installed. I get mixed answers from a lot of different people on this and would like a answer from an HP person who has experience dealing with the BIOS in the Business models of Probooks if possible please. I really like this Probook and have since became a major fan of HP over Dell and Lenovo products.  I plan to buy two more probooks, one for my wife and one for my daughter because this one is like a MacBook, only better.  Thank you for reading this and hopefully someone can help.

once you log a support case with HP customer care, they will provide you once utility and steps to run it. which can capture the UUID. BTW- UUID is a unique ID for each machine (16 or more digits) stored in BIOS itself.
Once the utility results(UUID and other info) in the log file, shared with HP. they can generate a key file(SMC) to reset.
well, Technical support depertment can help you in it, no need to ask for any specific person or department.
    hope it helps.

In my dock there was this weird program called "tutorial". While throwing away this program I had to fill in my password. Afterwards I tried to change my password, but my old password doesn't work anymore. Who can help?

What was this program for, or did you just assume it's something you shouldn't have and therefore arbitrarily decide to "throw it away"? Exactly how did you supposedly throw it away?
If you didn't change your administrator password, there's no reason it shouldn't work now, so that suggests you did something else, or changed it and then forgot what it was.
You can't recover that password; you can only change it. To do that, you would need to boot from your Snow Leopard DVD, choose your language, then choose Reset Password from the Utilities menu in the top menu bar.

  • I cannot sign into iCloud on my iMac.  I have read all of the help information, but that isn't working.  I cannot do anything with my system preferences - like add a new printer - because it won't log me in, sign me out, forget password doesn't work, etc.

I have been unable to log in to iCloud on my iMac.  None of the hints online have worked.  I can't sign in (with any password), sign out, the forget password doesn't work, the support button doesn't work.  It's locked.  I can't find anyway to fix this - I need to add a new printer ASAP - help!!!

The "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" window popped up a couple of weeks ago and is asking for my Apple ID password, which it will not accept,  It won't sign me out (I am not logged in), the support or forgot password buttons won't work.  With this window stuck open, I cannot access anything on system preferences.  I can't find any way to make it go away.  I have tried both my current and old Apple ID passwords, tried using FaceTime to login with the newer password, etc.

  • Does anyone else have two Apple IDs? I can't get rid of one of them. It's associated with my iCloud account and I can't fix it. The password doesn't work.

So, apparently I have two Apple IDs associated with my iPhone. One is an old aol address that got hacked and was shut down. Even aol doesn't recognize the email address anymore, and the password doesn't work. It's associated with my iCloud account, so now I can't access that account. My other Apple ID is with everything associated with my iPhone and everything works just fine. But now I can't get to my iCloud stuff. Has this ever happened to anyone else. The guy at the Apple store says he's never heard of it.

Does the alert refer to "Local Items?"

  • Upgraded to Mountain Lion, now my login password doesn't work

    Hello,
As the title says, I upgraded my iMac with Mountain Lion, and now my password doesn't work. I can't log in to the computer at all.
And no, I didn't forget it. It's been the same since I first got it (so an unfortunate hack on wireless wouldn't be out of the question...)
    Suggestions? Solutions?
    Thanks

I just set up my yahoo email account on Mail, but
whenever I try receive or send email Mail asks me for
my password. I enter my password, and then it tells
me that the server rejected my password. I have
checked two dozen times to make sure that I am
entering the right password. It is definitely the
right one, but the server always rejects it. When I

  • The software Sticky Password Doesn't work.

the plugin Sticky Password doesn't work in Firefox 37.

Changed the Product forum this thread is in from Thunderbird to Firefox so no need to create a duplicate thread.
This is a Extension in Firefox and not a Plugin like Flash or Java.
Also you are Testing builds on the Beta channel (currently at 37.0'''b3''') and Extensions like these tends to only support the current Release at most which is Firefox 36. www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/
In the Sticky Password software you can go to "Settings - Supported browsers and install the extension" as I guess that may be where there are updates? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/948577

Resetting User Password in Lion, Mountain Lion & Mavericks
Boot into your Recovery Partition by hold down the Command and R keys whilst booting.
When the Recovery screen appears, go to the Utilities menu and open Terminal.
    In Terminal, type:
    resetpassword
...a small app will open and allow you to choose the user for whom you want to change the password. If you are the admin, be certain that you choose your admin user. Type in your new password twice and give yourself a good hint. Click OK (or Done or whatever) and reboot, enjoying the use of your new, hopefully memorable, password.
    Good luck,

  • Just upgraded to 6.1 but my iTunes password doesn't work for my restore

Just backed up my iPhone4 in iTunes, transferred purchased items to my iTunes library, and then updated the IOS to 6.1.  Now iTunes is giving me the option to restore from my backup, but it wants a password, and my iTunes password doesn't work!  I was never asked for a new password for by backup so I'm very surprised my iTunes password doesn't work.  I just logged into this forum with my iTunes password so I know it is still active.  Anyone have any ideas of what I should do next?  Thanks!
