somebody please help. I'm used to working with editors who know all this stuff, but I'm trying to use my FCP to edit my own doc.
I had a drive with all my media on it this summer which broke down and lost everything. I have since bought a new 500GB G-Raid external drive which I've been working from. It is giving me serious problems by clicking and stuttering and freezing while I'm working. I'm afraid it is about to die and can't afford to lose all this media again.
I am trying to back up to the new hard space (400GB) that has been installed into my hard drive, but for some reason the backup is not working. I'm getting a message that there is a problem with the media. I have attempted to copy the media exactly as described in my FCP Bible but I'm failing miserably.
At work, someone mentioned one of my problems may also be that I don't have enough RAM. But my computer says I have 2.5 GB and that I'm fine.
PLEASE HELP ME!!! How do i copy this properly???

I've had this SAME PROBLEM just the other day -- my 500b G-RAID has been stuttering and clicking and misbehaving.....
One thing that helped me was to power the drive down and re-seat the cables(unplug them and then plug them in again), especially the fw cable going into the back of the G5....
Not a perfect soulution, but I was able to get the G-RAID to at least behave long enough so that I could copy the media from it to another drive.

ITunes and iOS 5

I have the most up-to-date version of iTunes (have just uninstalled and reinstalled it), and am trying to download iOS5. Everything says iTunes should present me with the option to do this, but it doesn't. When I use the iTunes search box it just re-directs me to stuff I've downloaded from the iTunes store and starts playing my music playlist. PLEASE HELP, I've spent 5 hours currently trying to figure this out, but admit to being technologically dumb!

Are you sure you have an iPhone 3GS and not an iPhone 3G? Your symptoms are indicative of you actually having an iPhone 3G which cannot run anything more recent than iOS 4.2.1. Confirm that you do indeed have an iPhone 3GS:

Any ideas - I have been getting this since the move to ME. Systems logs on to Mac.com then immediately comes up with this error - An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites”. Try publishing again later.

Unfortunately I'm not.. and I'm really getting fed up. I'm first to admit I'm technologically-challenged (which is why I prefer Apple to PCs because they're far more user friendly) but I've tried the things I've seen mentioned in other threads.. such as ensuring the .me update has been done, successfully published to a folder, etc.. When I publish (I only have the 'publish to mac', not 'publish to me' option) the creating log bar progressed to the half way mark before disappearing. Suddenly another box pops up to say that my site will begin publishing. It doesn't. Instead 'iweb unexpectedly quit'. It doesn't make a difference whether I've published to mac, published all to mac or simply clicked the publish button on the bottom left. While 'creating' the buttons turn blue but once it quits and I re-open/relaunch they're back to being red. As I am unable to get through to the online chat support (several unanswered messages and now it's completely unaccessible) I'm hoping someone else can suggest what I try next. It's been almost 2 weeks and I love iweb but am at the point of wanting to cancel my membership. Help!

My G-Technology External Drive is no longer recognised by my MacBook Pro. How do i repair this?

Following months of straightforward backing-up (using Time Machine) my 1TB G-Technology External Drive no longer appears on my screen when powered up and connected to my machine. I have read that this can happen after updates are downloaded onto the MacBook Pro (or indeed any other Mac product) but with update downloads being inevitable this cannot be avoided. Apple tentatively admit this is a problem but offer no solution that I can find! Even more annoyingly the drive itself is designed for use with Mac products and was the simplest plug'n play device I have ever used. Ideas please?

1. I am glad your Mavericks doesn't have the problem. I am sure there are a lot of Mavericks out there that don't have the problem, and yes, you are correct, I, along with ALL of the other people that are complaing of this problem all over the internet, including this support forum itself, are having problems with our own Mavericks installations.
2. Agreed, Apple doesn't have a good track record of admitting to the bugs in its Operationg Systems, but don't worry, Microsoft is just as bad. Technology is about making money after all.
3. Thanks for the instructions for updating my profile.
4. I took the precaution of removing all of my data from this machine. and wiped its harddrive.
I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard (the OS it came with), upgraded to Mountain Lion, and then upgraded to Mavericks before doing anything at all to the machine, and before installing anything on it.
So with this Fresh, brand new install of Mavericks (I dont trust upgrades - for good reason) I installed Open Office, Adobe Creative Suit CS6, Google Chrome, Filezilla, Firefox and Thunderbird, and Microsoft Remote Desktop client.
That's it.
The font that will not install is any of the fonts from the Univers family.
We have had this font in our office for the seven years I have worked there. It installs fine on all Macs from Tiger (10.4) to Mountain Lion (10.8) (I have just finished tesing this on a number of these machines).
We have one other mavericks machine but this font was already installed on it when it was upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks so it works.

This is a lot more information than has been provided by almost all of the other posts on all the forums I have been reading about this problem, and most of the posts have a lot of people chiming in saying,
"It works fine for me, so it must not be a problem".
Not a lot of help has been forthcoming for the others in this same situation that I have been reading of, and most are resorting to Third Party Programs in an attempt to get fonts installed, all with varying degrees of success.
I am not willing to use a third party program to do something the operationg system should be able to do itself.
I have tried pasting the fonts themselves into all of the various fonts folders in the OS, to no avail.
I will be very interested to hear what you make of the information I have supplied.

Z-Wave Interrupted by Smart Meter (ZigBee Technology)

Hi Digitial Life Community I am a current Digital Life customer and have been really happy with my service. Something unexpected happened and want to know if any of you have had this same problem. I have 4 Z-Wave devices (Smart Plug, Door Lock, Front Porch Light, and Thermostat) that allow me to adjust settings from my phone or computer. About a month ago these devices continually went offline and it took two technicans and many, many hours to finally figure out the problem: My next door neighbor just installed a Smart Meter which uses ZigBee technology and interfers with all of the Z-Wave devices. So I have two options: 1) To move DLC box further away from my neighbors Smart Meter OR 2) Remove Z-Wave devices from system so they will no longer send offline notices. At this point, I have chosen option 2 because I want to investigate this matter further. I don't wont to continue moving DLC box everytime a different neighbor installs a Smart Meter. Smart Meters are becoming more popular and this problem will continue to increase if not addressed by AT&T. My technican said that he has never run into this problem before and was not sure how it would be handled. I would appreciate any comments.

MG, It sounds to me like maybe your tech is blaming the location because he can't figure out what's causing the problem. I've found that many of the field techs have a limited ability to troubleshoot some of the more complicated technical problems and often result to basic things they can easily do themselves (such as moving the DLC) because their internal escalation process can be lengthy. I had a tech at my house for nearly 4 hours to fix a problem with my pan and zoom camera. The field tech only had limited troubleshooting tools and spent a ton of time messing around with the camera while he waited for the issue to be escalated internally. When he finally go ahold of the escalation tech it took just a few minutes to resolve the problem. The field tech admitted he could have easily resolved the problem if he had been given the same access as the escalation tech. My recommendation would be to call AT&T support and demand that the issue be escalated to an advanced level technician or field supervisor. FYI, you will probably have to push to get the case escalated. It can be painful. I'm very new to J2EE (only worked with J2SE before),
and I'm interested in how it works.
I understand that JSP pages are somewhat similar to PHP scripts,
etc... I don't think that's true, but I'll admit to not being a PHP user.
My question is, what should I be learning
about if I want to write a website using Java?You'll have to know:
servlet engine like Tomcat or a Java EE app server like JBOSS or WebLogic
HTML (this isn't Java per se)
JSP or Velocity or Freemarker (template technologies)
JSTL
servlets
JavaScript (this isn't Java per se)
Depending on what you want your web site to do, you'll have to know JDBC and SQL and relational databases if you have persistent data.
There are a lot of frameworks available for web apps. Google for a list, but the ones you'll hear come up most often are Struts, WebWork, and Java Server Faces.
Spring has a Web MVC framework and lots more. It would be worth a serious look.

Create new Master Repository - oracle technology exist in logical topology

I have created a new master repository using the 'Create Master Repository' function in to an ORacle database user. This was all successful and I can sign in to topology manager as SUPERVISOR.
However I notice that the physical topology includes the 'oracle' technology in the list but this is NOT present in the logical topology.
When I import our models and projects that were developed elsewhere they fail becasue they are based on the oracle technology and this does not exist in the logical topology.
If I try to create the oracle technology or import it I get an error index violation on AK_TECHNO which is the index on the SNP_TECHNO table.
In the physical topology the oracle technology is shown as being both 'physical' and 'logical' (both check boxes are checked).
Any ideas ?

Turned off the hide unused technologoes and there they all are - including Oracle.................
So that explains why it appeared at some point before - once some data servers had been defined etc...........
I have my dataservers and schemas loaded now in the physical topology - but they are still not shoinwg in the logical topology - I think this is due to the data server in physical not being in the correct context. When I click the physical dataserver and go in to the contexts tab and choose global I get the error message (logical topology not configured for this context).

TS1398 Have Apple actually admitted the home button failures are a known issue?

I have had two iPads and an iPhone. I have known several people who also have iPhones and all, yes I say all have suffered with the home button failure. Apple should be reworking these devices free of charge with upgraded button technology, or have an app that replaces the home button on the resilient touch screen. I know you can use the accessibility option but it still isn't a tue home button.
What are your views on this?
Does anyone know if Apple have admitted failure?

Hi, I don't really want an app to replace the home button. I want apple to admit there is a weakness with the home button design and replace faulty units free of charge. An app would be an improvement... But not the answer.
I am amazed you have not seen a home button failure. Are you in the uk? Everyone I know has or is waiting for the dreaded lack of response from the button.
We were going to roll out these devices to all our staff until this issue appeared, now they have blackberrys. Never mind! maybe the iPhone 5 will not have any physical buttons, they don't need too.
Don t get me wrong, I think apples products are amazing but to fail on such a small detail that is so central to its function is disappointing to say the least.

Old geezer with new technology question

I am old and I have an old cell phone.
It will make calls and receive calls.
I am thinking about venturing to some new technology... an iPhone maybe?
Wondering if it will do ONE THING that I might be wanting to do.
With an iPhone... can you:
make a video/audio recording AND simultaneously, real time, upload it to... somewhere
as in... I have an iCloud account, maybe there?

And don’t know about WiFi areas.
But if I have an iCloud account and (got) a cellular data plan (when I got my iPhone) then it sounds like I could do this.
Only two questions:

You talk about uploading “photos”.
I’m talking about uploading continuously running video as it is still recording.
Will it (progressively) upload the video (pari passu) WHILST the video is still in the process of recording?
Or would you need to END the video recording before it would SEND?

I’ve only got OSX 10.7.5 but it looks like that would suffice for (non-shared) PhotoStream, which would be fine for me.

An interesting article. But at least Nokia have now admitted the problems with the 5800xm.

Was that article by nokia.
Its just a write up about the phone which all phones do go thru criticisms.
Any brands or manufacturers venturing in into new technologies will go thru failures and start improvising from that starting point.
I believe nokia has not failed but has done a wonderful job with their first touch screen phone. its just the matter of time for them to improvise and fill up the loop holes and come up with a great phone like they always do.
If you really test the Samsung Omnia or the Sony Ericsons X1, it is not that perfact as well as they to do have glitches here and there.
Not only phones even car manufactures do go thru this and take this as a stepping stone to come up with better products.
At the end of the day which product you would prefer to use

Adobe hack bigger than first admitted

So it seems that adobe lost 38 million user details, 10 times more than they first admitted to.
Thats the bad news.
The good news of course is the hackers got the code to photoshop. So hopefully it will find its way into a variety of other developers and into the general public ridding the world of adobes corporate greed with this faulty creative cloud scam they got running.

My biggest concern is trusting Adobe with my credit card any more. My credit card company is sending me a new card and automatically cancelled my current one (Adobe contacted them). Now I have the pain of changing the card at a variety of places. How do I know that Adobe has figured out how they got hacked? Has the hole been plugged or will we be going through this all over again in a few months? The fact that they said one thing a few weeks ago and now this is "bigger" than they thought... makes me wonder if they really understand what happened and can keep my information safe in the future. I am very skeptical. I have been a big supporter of Adobe over the years and actually feel that CC isn't that bad of a deal (considering I use a Mac and a PC, the pricing is much better since I don't have to own two different licenses). However, this is really making me think hard about giving Adobe my CC any more in the future.

Is Time Capsule Apple's way of admitting AEBS Disks does not work?

The support/discussion area is full of posts from many of us who have struggled to find a working solution for our Airport Extreme Base Stations with an attached disk drive; our frustration and patience has been tested as this was a promised technology, advertised to work at sale of the AEBS. Moreover, Apple touted the wireless backup with Time Machine as Leopard got close to shipment, but pulled the technology at the last minute.
So my question to Apple is, are you now admitting that AEBS + Disk simply does not work, and if so what are you going to do for those of us to bought into a technology promise that has simply failed?
Any insight, suggestions, patches, or even communication would be a HUGE and welcome change given the misinformation we have endured to date.

Interesting points from several of you. I am sure if these are global issue I might not have encountered them due to my light usage of AEBS external disk to date. That stems of course from my heavy usage of my Linux server mentioned earlier. I am sure that I might encounter some of them if a moved all my data onto an "Air Disk."
It sounds however that the problems are more OS X / Air Disk Client issues than AEBS from this point of view. Without actively troubleshooting them it's hard telling. Just a couple thoughts - please ignore if already covered elsewhere:
1. For the "after a couple days - vanished" issue: Have you also tried another OS other than OS X? (Windows, Linux, Solaris, BSD, anything with a samba client) Are you connecting via Air Disk or SMB? I do not know the internals of Air Disk, but I have been using the samba services of the AEBS.
2. As for automount, this very much sounds like a problem with the Volume Manager in OS X. Have you sniffed the network to determine if the VM is sending out the request for mount?
3. Finder not showing unless displayed/accessed via Desktop sounds 100% OS X problem.
4. 10.4 vs. 10.5 issue again points to OS X.
5. Access permissions: This is a common issue with NAS storage. Most times it comes back to end user not understanding the capabilities or poor/incomplete documentation of the product again causing misunderstanding. I would guess given the "it just works" mantra that the documentation is somewhat lack luster causing end user confusion.
6. Time Machine Target: I agree and they should fix this. Especially with another near identical product being released. I expect an firmware update for the AEBS when TC is released.
I am not trying to be a PITA, just trying to lend my knowledge/experience to the community. I have been working with carrier class networking and storage for nearly a decade. That being said, I don't expect this device to keep pace with those environments or feature sets. This is old news for that space, but cutting edge for the SOHO and consumer space. There will be bumps in the road caused by both the vendor and end user.
I think the most important things to determine is if "Air Disk uses SMB/Bonj/etc or a proprietary application protocol. Then if the problem is with Air Disk or direct SMB access (or both.) Lastly it needs to be determined if this is a client (OS X / Air Disk) or server (AEBS) problem. These issues can not be solved until one device is pinpointed as the cause for each of these issues. Many of these in fact sound like client issues in OS X and it's supported applications. (Particularly TM sounds at fault since I can not use my SMB shares on my Linux server as a target.) I am willing to help troubleshoot, but only to an extent since we all paid Apple the money not me. =)
