Adobe 9.5.5 crashes on attempt to open encrypted pdf

Fred: The senter of the document says "After all voting selections have been made to the ballot, CLICK on the red “Click Here to Finalize Selections” button located on the Ballot Image at the top or bottom right hand corner. By clicking the red “Click Here to Finalize Selections” button on the ballot image, it will generate a PDF of all needed materials which include your FPCA Voter Instructions, Declared Write-In candidates, if applicable, Security Envelope, Carrier Envelope and your personal Ballot. Note: you WILL NOT be able to get back into the program if you have already clicked to finalize your selections button. After clicking “Click Here to Finalize Selections” button, the generated PDF will ask you to click Open or Save, please CLICK Save As and then specify the save location onto your computer. "
Fred: is there an online service I can use to do that?
It should be noted that the system is 64 bit Linux (Mageia 3), and Arcobat 9.5.5 is the newest version available for that system.  Also, 9.5.5 seems to be able to handle "normal" pdf files without a problem, on this OS.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer
Regards
Fred James

OS: Mageia 3 64-bit, Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.5.5 (latest version available for this OS ... normally works for Adobe Acrobat PDF files (protable document files ... as in created by Adobe Acrobat)
I was sent an encrypted PDF file, which I was instructed to
     download and save
     open the downloaded file
fill in the file (mouse clicks)
and "finalize" the file (mouse click)
and when the option was offered, save the resulting file
This is supposed to then generate some additional pages of information, also in PDF format.
Problem ... attempting to open this downloaded, encrypted PDF, crashes the Acrobat Reader (9.5.5).  To be specific
     open Acrobat Reader
     File -> Open
     select the file in question
     click open
Acrobat Reader closes/vanishes from the screen.

  • Acrobat 9.4.4 Pro Crashes When Attempting to Open PDF Form

    OS: Win XP Pro SP3
The  machine worked fine until Acrobat updated itself to 9.4.4 then the  problem started.  Crashes when attempting to open most PDF Forms - even  when freshly rebooted or repaired.  I originally thought it was related  to a browser or Outlook 2007, but later found that it does it under all  circumstances.  It is my General Manager's machine having the problem,  so I need to get this resolved ASAP.  Your experience and assistance is  much appreciated.
My temporary fix was to uninstall 9.4.4 - Install 9.0  and turn off automatic updates - worked beautifully.  It would be nice to get to the bottom of this so we can update our CS4 products.
Another user reported this problem on May 16, 2011 and no one has replied to his post.
    Thanks in advance.

Please repost in the Acrobat Windows forum.

? Adobe 11 crashes every time I attempt to open a pdf. Uninstalled and reinstalled... still crashes.

If you are in Windows (which we don't know), you can try using Windows Explorer to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement.

    Hi,
Could you please let us know if you are using any 3rd party plugin for Adobe Reader? If so, can you please temporarily remove the same and see if you are facing the same issue.
If you are not sure about the same, please do the following:
    1. Navigate to the Reader installation folder. Usually its C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0
    2. Ensure that Adobe Reader is not running and delete the entire "Reader" folder
    3. Initiate a Repair transaction for Adobe Reader from the Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Also, it would be great if you could let us know if the issue is PDF specific or does the issue happen with all documents. Do you observe the same issue with the below mentioned PDF as well:

What kind of advertisement?  In Adobe Reader?  Can you post a screenshot of that: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1070933
Regarding the crash, can you try disabling Protected Mode through the registry: download, unzip, then run the registry script https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/49eeb48b-07c5-4502-984c-8a25259914fa

Have downloaded both Adobe reader and PDF reader, but when I attempt to open a pdf from a site on safari, it starts to load, then disappears.  Any way to fix this?

Try quitting the PDF apps and Safari like I describe below. Then reset the iPad. After it starts try again.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

When I attempt to open a PDF file I saved from a website using Safari, I get the message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." When I save the same PDF file using FireFox it opens up immediately. Is there any way to correct this problem with Safari?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

An attempt to open a pdf file with Photoshop Elements (version 12) resulted in a pop generated by the Photoshop Editor stated "Impossible to execute this operation (opening file) because one of the specified colour is not managed". Is there any mean to adapt the file to make its reading possible?
Did somebody get the same problem?

It is a high order probability that your SQL's report generator is creating the PDF, not Acrobat (which by design and EULA cannot be used in as/with server).
That the report generator outputs to an old-old version of PDF bears this out.
Wiki articles on PDF are very nice for those high level intro summaries.
To know / understand PDF you purchase and study the ISO Standard for PDF (ISO 32000-1:2008).
Rather than "PDF validation" you may want to consider addressing the appearent root cause of the problem(s).
You can change the email2fax application to one that can deal with older PDF versions.
You can change the report generator to one that can output to the ISO Standard.
(Perhaps the in-use application can be configured to output to the current version of PDF (i.e., the ISO Standard).
    Be well...

Trash the AdobePDFViewer.plugin and AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin files
    Mac HD/Applications
    Trash the Adobe Reader app
    [user]/Library/Preferences
    Trash the com.adobe.Reader.plist file
To access the [user]/Library, hold the "Option" key and click "Go" from the FInder menu.
    Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Trash the Reader folder (the whole folder)
    Empty the Trash.
Download the FULL installer here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
Quit your browser and reinstall Reader.
Launch it from the Applications folder and accept the license agreement.
You should have no problems downloading PDFs with Safari.
Unfortunately, ANY PDF that says it's damaged.... is. You'll have to trash them.

Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there.

  • Adobe reader 8.1.4 crashes when trying to open a pdf link

    Good morning,
We have an issue with our users. When they try to open a URL pointing to a PDF, Reader 8 crashes after trying to open the link. If I log on as an admin to the machine, the same link opens up fine. There seems to be an issue with the group policy restrictions being applied to the teachers. I look thru our group policies and could not find anything that would stop the normal behavior of Adobe 8 and IE 8 from occurring. Any assistance is appreciated.
    So long,
    Martin Reyes

Someone may give you and answer here, but you might have more luck in the Reader forum - this is not that forum. It really sounds like a Windows issue as you suggest, but I will let others address this.

  • Attempt to open a PDF with Adobe Reader fails

I am using Adobe Reader X and have been having problems where double clicking on the PDF file does not automatically open the PDF file. Sometimes it will open it and on those days I will have no problem. Other days it just seems to refuse to open the PDF and I see several instances of AcroRd32.exe showing in Task Manager taking up varying degrees of memory. I tried to fix the problem by running the "repair my install", but that ended up breaking my only workaround which was to launch the Adobe Reader and then select the PDF file I wanted to open.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

I had the same problem just now and what worked for me was i archived a email in MS outlook using the Adopbe PDF dropdown menu and then I had full access to X Pro again.
    Hope that this helps
