Adobe 9 takes Over Other Applications once installed

Since I tried and failed to install some non-compatible software(not Adobe) on my Vista laptop, Adobe 9 has failed to work. In fact, it has taken over my other applications such as Explorer & Media player. The Laptop thinks these applications are Adobe related & tries to open them with Adobe. It does not give me the option to Open with another program and the file associations have not changed. What has changed is that the Target type of these applications has changed from "Application" to "EXE" and the icons change to the Adobe picture. I uninstalled Adobe to rectify the problem, but now I cannot install Adobe without the same thing happening.Have I deleted an important file from the Vista system which is vital for Adobe use? The upshot is I cannot read any PDFs for the forseeable future. Also, I cannot use system restore as I left it too late & my ideal restore point has gone.
Stand alone laptop/Vista home premium.

Brian

try this is you are comfortable working in the Registry. Your settings for exe files need to be re-established:
1. Launch Notepad by clicking on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad
2. Enter the following into Notepad:
Windows Registry Editor Version 6.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWi thList]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWi thProgids]
"exefile"=hex(0):
3. Click on the File Menu and select Save As
4. From the Save as Type drop down select All Files
5. Change the File Name to Exe.reg
6. Save the file to the Desktop and then close Notepad.
7. Double-click the Exe.reg file. Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, enter the password or provide proper confirmation.
8. Click Yes, and then click OK in response to the registry prompts.
9. Restart your Computer
10. You should be sure to delete the Exe.reg file after resolving this issue.

How can i fix this problem, can't call anyone because all they have is MORE READING!!! And NO HUMAN CONTACT!
    YOU SUCK ADOBE!!!

NObody is orced to download Acrobat. Still, you did, you had your trial, and now it's finished. If you don't want to buy it, just uninstall it the normal way (but DONT) just delete it, ask if you don't know how to uninstall. Once it is gone, you might have to repair Adobe Readet. So, be angry but understand you had a choice of what to download. It would help you if you remember the full names of products, there is nothing called Adobe XI.

  • Adobe 9 takes over MS office 2007

    Help
    I have the same issue
I am using Vista after installing Reader 9.0 it takes over
It changes all of my MS office 2007 icons to look like Acrobat icons and then tries to launch adobe instead of my office application such as my outlook I get the following error message
    c:programfiles\.......reader\Eula.exe
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel"
Please help!!!! I have checked all the associations and they are correct.

That is not something that should happen.
What I would try in your situation is a repair install of Office (Add/Remove Programs; select Microsoft Office, then use the Change button to perform the repair install).

  • Which Adobe product takes over vdeos?

I downloaded some Adobe product and now all of my videos have an adobe symbol and are not accessable.  Any dea what I need to remove?

    Hi Ralph
Thanks for the additional info.I'm not certain what operating system you are on. I'm a PC and a big ole Mac ignoramous. So I'm not sure if Mac will behave as PC (Windows) does.
IF you are using a PC, what does it show when you right-click one of the videos and examine the properties? I'll post a screen capture of my own properties dialog for a .MPG file type.
See the button labeled Change? Click that and you are able to choose any other application that you want for playing the video.
Sorry, but I'm not thinking any of the applications you listed should have caused a change to the file association. Obviously SOMETHING changed it, but I'd be hard pressed to say what.
Hopefully something here will help or possibly someone else will have a different idea of what to try.
    Cheers... Rick

  • When I install Reader 11.0.1 it "takes over" other programs

I used the Reader for a long time on my laptop before - a few months ago - it began to "colonise" my system, producing the symbol by many of my other programs (including Internet Explorer and Word) and preventing me from opening these programs. I eventually uninstalled Reader so that I could use the other programs. I have tried many times to install/uninstall, but without solving the problem. I am using OS Windows 74bit. I also have Reader installed on my desktop, where it works OK. The only difference between the two computers is the security: on the desktop I am using McAffee, on the laptop ESET. I have tried installing Reader on the laptop with virus protection disabled but with no positive result.
Incidentally, I have another problem with Adobe Flash which will not install on my laptop, but perhaps I should raise this in the Flash Forum - I mention it in case it might be relevant to a solution.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Adobe help tells me , my computer tells adobe photoshop elements 10  to controll other programs such as Aol. scanner pringter , HP support etc"  They want $40 to tell me how to stop my  HP from telling Adobe photo shop eslements from doing this.....what do I do , please,   Leasure

It would have been better If you would have told us your OS , but when you install the new software then the file association and some basic functionality is overided by the new program ,
for example:- you might double click on the JPEG file and it will open in MSpaint but when you will install the Illustartor , the JPEG by default will open in the Illustrator , because this program has made changes in the OS to suit itself better.
Now , in your sitaution we would like to know what exactly has chaged and what you want in detail?

  • How can I get Adobe to take over my computer to help with lost photos?

I have lost photos going from PC to Mac in Lightroom.  Have tried all the standard stuff.  How do I get Adobe to log into my computer remotely to help?

Adobe Support is for problems installing and licensing their software on your computer, not to fix something you’ve done by mistake, unless you pay for their support which will likely cost quite a bit.
If you can describe your issue here in more detail perhaps a forum user can help you.

  • 10.4.7 Runs Slow, Spinning Beach Ball, "kass" takes over system

To the helpful frequenters of this forum:
Since installing Tiger and updating to 10.4.7 recently, I have experienced some major system slow downs on my computer. I am running a Titanium Powerbook G4 with 512MB RAM and 12GB free (from a 60GB hard drive).
My problems seem to center on Mail 2 app, which runs very slowly when accessing the IMAP server (a problem I never experienced with Mail 1 in the days of Panther). However, it extends to other applications: when launching iTunes and Safari, I often get a spinning beach ball and a 10-20 second hang that I never had before. Sometimes closing programs can take a long time. Force quit often does not respond, but for some reason pressing my laptop power key (as if to turn off the computer) helps to get things jump-started.
In my Activity Monitor, there is a Process called "kass" that is eating up anywhere from 20-30% of my processor. I think that this is connected to some sort of Key Access software that might have been installed on my computer for my college access, but I am not sure. Here are the details from Activity Monitor:

What I don't understand is why this is flaring up now, since the Key Access has always been there (on OS 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3 as I upgraded sequentially). Perhaps there is some sort of bad interaction with the 10.4.7 upgrade? I'm not really sure, but I was wondering how I would go about eliminating this hang up. It might be the source of so much slowing down on my computer!
    Thank you very much,
    Matthew

    Thanks for your help, everyone.
I seem to have solved the problem. The "kass" function was linked to KeyAccess, an app made by Sassafrass. This app was installed on my computer by my University so that I could use certain programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) while on the school network by obtaining a key through the school Internet connection. For some reason this process started to take over my computer once I upgraded to 10.4.7, so I just removed the application from my computer all together. Now the hang-ups in other programs, as well as the IMAP email seem to be back to their old speediness.
    Strange how these things work.

  • Why does Acrobat 9 Pro crash other applications on my laptop?

I tried to install my Acrobat 9 Pro. The Adobe icon overtook several other applications. Now when I try to open them, they attempt to open in Acrobat with an attached error message. An suggestions on how to fix this glitch?
I have uninstalled and re-installed Acrobat, as well as restarted my system. I love Adobe, but as a Grad  Student, I have to my PDF software working and not intereferring with other applications.
Thank you for your assistance -

Which operating system are you using?  You can adjust the file associations to affect which application is used to open the document.  If you right click on the document you can adjust the setting by right clicking and selecting Open With.

  • Since installing Adobe CS5 all other applications operate very slowly

Since installing Adobe CS5 all other applications operate very slowly, but it may be that the entire operating system is running slowly.

Usually with Adobe, it's the prefs.
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library" then go to Preferences folder and delete or drag to the Desktop all your Adobe in that folder.
If this works, you'll need to reset preferences.
It could also be an item in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items. Remove login items with the "-", you can always add them back.

The system I'm have is a Mac-mini that had SL on it and no SuperDrive.  I have also call Apple Support and they have really have not been to much help over 1st did my up grade to Lion and Installed the Lion Server.... it lost my SSL that I paid for and kill almost on of my server setting, plus kill all my web servers (using apache vhosts), and not to say the LDAP will even let remote users login to your laptops.
PS: There is no way that I'm going to buy a Install USB from Apple... They have over billed me over $300.00 because the Apps Store still has bugs (Glad I did not write that App/Service)
If there is anyone that can give in the information to create a USB install stick, I would be very thinkful.

Here you are bro, courtesy of "softpedia.com"....brilliant site!!!
If you ever had problems with your Mac OS X installation you know that the first thing you should do is to check the startup volume using Disk Utility.
After the check has ended and, if the errors exceed a certain level of seriousness, the Disk Utility application will require you to restart your Mac and use its Mac OS X Install disc counterpart.
Other users may have to reinstall OS X altogether, but will find, or already know, that their SuperDrive (a CD/DVD reader and write combo drive) is not functioning properly and it will not be able to read the Install disc.
Although this might happen to Mac OS X Leopard users due to faultyhardware, the vast majority of problematic SuperDrives will be encountered inside Snow Leopard running Macs.
This is due to the updated SuperDrive firmware included in either the Install disc or the software updates one has to install to reach the latest version of OS X, namely 10.6.6.
This can be fixed by flashing the SuperDrive’s stock firmware using free command line tools that one can find for free online (I will write about this process also, but at a later time because this article only focuses on allowing you to create your own alternative USB boot disc).
If you are reading this last bit of information with skepticism, than you should know that it happened to me too. Despite all my tries to make it work properly, the SuperDrive kept on munching any inserted DVDs and just popped them out in about twenty seconds.
The workaround to this issue was to create my own Leopard bootable USB memory stick. I am not suggesting a Snow Leopard bootable stick mainly because there are lots of users that have decided to buy the cheaper, Upgrade version, which I have not tested and, therefore, I’m not sure if it will work properly once written to a USB disk.
And now, here are the exact steps you should follow in order to obtain a fully bootable Leopard (or Lion) Install disc.
Step 1 (If you already have the Leopard install disc DMG file you can skip to Step 2)
Launch Disk Utility (you can find it inside /Applications/Utilities). Here select the Leopard Install disc in the list of drives on the left and click on the New Image menu entry at the top of the window. A save message will appear where you will have to select the Desktop as a destination.
    Step 2
After Disk Utility has finished creating the Leopard DMG, insert your USB stick and erase all data and reformat the disk. To do this select the USB in the list of drives on the left and, after clicking on the Erase tab on the right side of the window, choose the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format and click the Erase button beneath.
    Step 3
After the USB has been reformatted, download the SuperDuper app from HERE and launch it. Once SuperDuper starts, you will only have to select the DMG in the Copy drop-down menu, your USB memory stick on the right and hit the “Copy Now” button.
One can also use Disk Utility for this task but creating a bootable USB stick failed 2 out 4 times when copying the DMG to the stick (with the exact same settings each time). Creating the bootable stick using SuperDuper proved to be the perfect way to do it because it worked each of the 4 times I tested it.
The steps above can also be used to create a bootable Mac OS X Lion USB by using the InstallESD.dmg image you can find inside the Lion installer (named “Install Mac OS X Lion.app”) downloaded from the Mac App Store in the /Applications folder.
To locate the InstallESD.dmg right click the Lion installer, select the “Show Package Contents” entry, go inside the “Contents” folder, and from there into the “SharedSupport” folder. Inside this folder you can find the InstallESD.dmg you can use to create your own bootable Mac OS X Lion USB stick. To do so, go to the third step described above and use the InstallESD.dmg as the DMG to be copied to your USB disc.
That’s it! Once the process ends you will have a fully bootable Leopard (or Lion) USB disk that you can use as an alternative to the Apple’s DVD Install disc that comes bundled with all Macs.
To use your newly created bootable disk you will have to restart the Mac, press and hold the OPTION key until the StartupManager appears. Here, select the Mac OS X Install disk using your keyboard arrows and press return to start from the selected drive.
