Adobe Acrobat 6 and Adobe Reader 9 Web browser problem

Good Day,
I have a user that has Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 installed on the same computer. Acrobat 6 is used to edit (via open with -> Adobe Acrobat) while for normal reading, they use Adobe Reader 9 (since some files that were created in Acrobat 9 cannot be opened with Acrobat 6).
From the desktop, everything works as it should. However, the problem is that when the user is trying to open a document on the web (from Internet Explorer 7) then instead of using Reader 9, it uses Acrobat 6 (and because is unable to open Acrobat 9 files) it gives an error saying that you need to have Adobe Reader 8 or 9 installed.
So far I have tried the following:
1) Reparing Reader 9
2) Uninstalling Acrobat 6 running a repair on Reader 9 (which fixes the problem, until I reinstall Acrobat 6 again. I make sure I do not put a check mark on Read files on Internet Explorer)
3) Went to Preferences on Acrobat 6 and unchecked Display PDF in browser.
4) Checked on Manage Add-ins and tried disable any combination of Adobe PDF addin to make it work only with 9.
Note: Reader version is the latest 9.4.1
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Max

Ok, so after I wrote the last post, I read through the related posts, and found the answer to
what i was looking for.
I guess it is unofficial, but I tested it today and works great:
Registry that needs to be changed is:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe
Change the path (Acrobat 6) from "c:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat6\Acrobat.exe"
to the path of Reader 9 which would be something like "c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe"
That fixed the problem.
Thanks
Max

  • Adobe Reader 10 Web Application Problem

    Hello,
I am currently troubleshooting issues with Adobe Reader 10, while opening PDF files in a web application using IE, Acro32.exe opens in the background and does not open the page. Any attempt to end the process fails, if the user closes IE and attempts to reopen IE or Adobe Reader 10 application they will either freeze or start in the background and not open a window. The computer must be restarted in order to open these applications again.
    Troubleshooting steps:
Attempted to disable all of Adobe Reader 10's protected mode setting - no change
Attempted to disable "Display PDF in browser" - no change
Updated Reader to 10.1.2 - no change
Forced the frozen Acro32.exe to restart using Sysinternals Procexp and receive the following error "Faulting application acrord32.exe, version 10.1.2.45, faulting module acrord32.exe, version 10.1.2.45, fault address 0x0005640a." The application fails to stop and this error is generated by the new process spawned.
Once the client is rolled back to version 9 the issue is resolved.
The web application does not open inline windows in IE; it will open a new Reader window (in normal functionality).
    Any suggestions?

If you are in Windows, you can try using this tool to remove all traces of Reader:

  • Detect if fillable form is open in Acrobat (as opposed to Reader or web browser)

I have a fillable form that is Reader Extended (so it can be saved from Adobe Reader). After a user fills in the form, he clicks a submit button that sends a data stream to a servlet. The servlet embeds this data as XML in another version of the form, converts the form to be PDF/A compliant, and returns the new PDF/A form with embedded data. That all works fine when the fillable form was open in either Reader or a web browser. But if the user has the fillable form open in Acrobat when he clicks the submit button, the embedded data is stripped out of the PDF/A form that's returned by the servlet.
It's not a problem if the user fills in the data while the form is open in Acrobat, as long as he closes the form and opens it in Reader or a web browser before clicking the submit button.
Is there a way to detect if the fillable form is open in Acrobat (perhaps in the preSubmit event?) so I can display a message warning the user to save and close the form, and then open it in Reader or a web browser before clicking the submit button?

I added the following code to my submit button, but it gives me the same appType and host.name values for IE and Acrobat, so I can't tell them apart:
    var
    viewerType = xfa.host.appType;
    var
    viewerName = xfa.host.name;xfa.host.messageBox("Viewer is "
    + viewerType);xfa.host.messageBox("Host is "
    + viewerName);
    viewerType is Exchange-Pro
    viewerName is Acrobat

  • Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close.

When reading PDF attachments, I get the following:  Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried to remove Adobe Reader via Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs but that won't work.  I get this:  This patch package could not be opened.  Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package. I don't know how to do what is being asked.  I have tried to download Adobe Reader again but get this when I do:  Note:  this application already installed.
I have Adobe Reader X (10.0.1) with an update installed on 2/19/2011.  I have Windows XP SP3.
Anyone who can help me get Adobe Reader working correctly again or uninstalling it so I can reinstall.
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the input.  Did you remove Adobe Reader 10 first before you downloaded the older version?  If you removed it, how did you do that?  The add/remove programs in control panel won't let me remove it -- it says a patch package can't be opened.

Is this an app bbbc?  IF it is I would contact the app developer and see if they can resolve the issue for you.
also take a look at the reviews and see if other users are having the same issue and see if they have a resolution.

  • Adobe Reader clashing with web browser, problem. Help

    Hello,
I've been using Foxit Reader before using Adobe Reader. Now when i'm trying to view pdf files in firefox there is this error showing "The Adobe Reader cannot be used to view pdf files in a web browser". I've tried reinstalling adobe reader but this problem persists. Below is a screenshot of the problem. This might be a bug in the program as i have done the needful and set adobe as the deafult pdf file manager or the web browser might be clashing with this version of adobe reader. I'm not sure why this is happening and would like someone to educate me on this.
Please let me know of any solution to this problem. I'm on Windows XP.
    Thanks,

  • Adobe Reader XI Web Based Review - No Login Box

    Hi,
Has anyone experienced problems when opening a PDF for browser based review on Adobe Reader XI? It works perfectly fine on Reader X but as more users upgrade to Reader XI we are having to ask them to downgrade to use our web based review.
The problem: no login box is presented for the web credentials
Adobe detects the PDF is commenting enable and loads the anott.api but users can not use any of the annotation tools (greyed out). The send and receive button doesn't appear either. The only thing that does work correctly is that the user is triggered to add the host to privillage locations. Even after browser reboot (required after adding a host) there is no login triggered.
Affected: all system setups XP, Win7/8, Macs, Safari, Firefox, IE7/8/9/10
p.s. the problem is resolved after downgrading.
    Many Thanks,
    DC7

Browser-based reviews were deprecated a while ago and I'm pretty sure they got rid of it entirely with Acrobat/Reader 11. Shared reviews are meant to take its place, and yes I do realize it's not the same thing.

  • NVDA and JAWS won't read doc in Acrobat Pro and Free Reader correctly!

I downloaded the free trial of Adobe Acrobat Pro in order to create 508-compliant, accessible PDFs.
I first created the doc in Word, and, using the Acrobat tab, created a PDF for accessibility purposes, and it prompted me to save it as a PDF. I entered the name and saved, and it automatically opened the PDF version of the doc in Acrobat Pro with the "Make Accessible" tool bar open on the right-hand side.
I went through the reading order and tagged and organized everything to be in the correct order, and then I filled in the Alt Tags for images/figures. Then I had the system perform an accessibility check. It told me the tags would need to be checked manually, as do the colors, and the title was missing. (I had entered the title and source info, etc. into the document's properties, in accordance with an Adobe Acrobat article I'd read on creating accessible docs. I don't know why the title wasn't being noted.)
I tested the doc's accessibility with the Adobe built-in reader, and it worked perfectly- everything was read in the correct order in which I'd tagged it- including the alt tags!
When I tried opening the doc in the free Adobe Reader, however, it wasn't read at all. I then opened my screen readers (one at a time)- JAWS and NVDA- and neither one would read the document, unless I clicked the cursor on a particular part of the text, etc. I need this to read the document- in its entirety- automatically!
    Please help!!

Finally figured it out -- if I view the form directly in Adobe Reader (over our network), I see the confusing message about "Click 'Sign' to fill out..."
BUT, if I open the form within a web browser (IE, Firefox, etc.), I see the usual message: "Please fill out the following form. You cannot save data typed into this form. Please print..."
It is doing what I expected; I just wasn't viewing it in the usual manner.  Users will be seeing this form via a web browser, so problem solved.

  • Adobe Reader X (latest) Toolbar problems

One of the users at the company I work at has a particularly odd issue.  Every time he opens Reader X the toolbar is configured to a default.  The odd thing is this isn't the default that Adobe has. If I make changes and then restart Reader, it defaults back to the original toolbar.  If I delete the registry items for Reader, on first run it goes back to the default adobe toolbar but on second run it goes back to that default.  He does use a add-on called FileOpen but other than that it's about as standard an installation as it can get.
Is there any way to clear the settings for the toolbar so it's no longer locked to those toolbar settings?

I don't believe you answered the question. I have the same problem in that when I upgraded to Reader X my Toolbar disappeared and you responded to my post with a fix. Last week I installed updates to both Acrobat 8 and Reader X and in the process lost my toolbar and the floating toolbar. After "repairing" both Reader and Acrobat numerous times I find that at least the floating toolbar is back and F8 will of course deliver the traditional fixed, top of the page toolbar, but only for that specific open document. When I open a new document (from the web) I must F8 to get my traditional toolbar back. Below are the settings I am using to achieve this (I have tried every combination to try and make this work). Any help to get my toolbar back is very much appreciated.

  • Adobe Reader XI protected mode problem

I downloaded Reader XI and went to open a pdf that previously worked with Reader.  But Adobe Reader XI won't open (says problem with "protected mode").  I can't open any pdf's either on my computer or on the internet at trusted sights.  Troubleshooting takes me to a page on fixes for Reader X. Not helpful!  Any ideas?  (I uninstalled and reinstalled and still won't work.)

    CoUnyot,
    Thanks for your post ...
Please Disable protected Mode .. Please find the below steps ":
Disable Protected Mode by going to Edit > Preferences > General and deselecting Enable Protected Mode at startup.
    Restart Reader.

  • Adobe Reader X - Firefox integration Problem

    Dear All,
    My first post here.
I am having problem's with the Adobe Reader X integration with Firefox (v3.6.12). I have been using Adobe Reader always and it's been fine.
But I installed the new Adobe Reader X, and it integrates with firefox well, PDF document's open well within the browser.. BUT, I cannot save the PDF document from within the pdf.. I cannot click anywhere on the toolbar.. I cannot click on the pop up toolbar as well (the black one).. When i press F8, I can restore the toolbar or make it disappear.. but that's all I can do..
If I try to save the document from firefox file menu, it works.. but not from within the pdf...
This problem is also seen in IE, as well.
I have tried repairing the install and also uninstall / reinstall adobe reader X. But nothing worked..
For more info., I have been discussing this issue here > http://forum.notebookreview.com/windows-os-software/534412-adobe-reader-x-available-3.html
I am looking forward to resolving this soon, because I use / read / work with hundreds and thousands of PDF, and they are extremely essential for my research work.. as some might know, all research articles are in PDF format these days..
Thanks in advance and best wishes,
    Cheers, fondue

    My replies are in Bold.
Thank you for your response and message.
    1. Are you seeing this problem with all kinds of PDF's or some specific  kinds like secure PDF's (with doc open password or printing  restrcitions), reader extended PDF's or PDF forms.
This problem is with all kind's of PDF's.
    2. Are you opening a locally saved PDF by doing a drag drop in the  browser or right click and open with IE/FF or directly opening a PDF  hosted on the internet?
It doesn't matter. However I do it, I see this problem in Firefox, IE & Google Chrome.
    3.  Can you also check the version of the Reader X browser plugin? you  could find it at C:\Program Files\Common  Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroPDF.dll. Right click -> Properties  -> Details
If version is 9.0.x then you could try a clean install of Reader X.
I have checked it. It's the latest plug-in (though at the moment, I have gone back to Adobe Reader 9.4.1, as I've mentioned before, because I need the reader to be working fine for my work and daily life. I am just waiting for a fix before I try Adobe Reader X again.
As I've mentioned before, I am seeing this issue ONLY on my Windows 7 Ultimate (Laptop). In the desktop's at work, with Windows XP / Vista, I don't see it. Adobe Reader is working fine, browser integration is fine, the floating tool bar works fine, the right click menu pop' up where the right click is done...I can also save PDF' from the main toolbar at the top and so on...
I really have run out of ideas.... and I am very surprised that no expert support personnel (if at all there is one) have dropped by or said anything or mentioned anything about this.
    Anyway.... Cheers.

  • Adobe Reader v.9.1 - problem during installation

I've tried to download the free Adobe Reader Version 9.1 on a number of occasions, and I get to the last window with 1 second to go, when an error window appears as follows:
"Error1935. An error occurred during the installation of assembly component. {63E949F6-03BC-5C40-A01F-C8B3B9A1E18E}. HRESULT: 0x8007371B."
It's a bit frustrating because I can't access any PDF files, as they are displayed on wordpad, ie gobbledegook!   Many thanks for any assistance.  Can anybody help?

    More details to last post.
AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe installs without AIR and Acrobat.com.
Extracted this EXE to get MSI and used Customization Tool to create MST. Deselected AIR in the Customization Tool.
Installing using MSI and MST still results in AIR and Acrobat.com being installed.
    Anyone else run into this?

  • Adobe Reader 9 Linux GUI problems

    Hi!
I've been using Linux Mint 8 since October 2009. Before that I was using Debian Lenny. I'm trying to use Adobe Reader 9.3 for working with multiple pdf documents. I've run into some problems that didn't seem to exist when I was using it on Lenny (although it was also using Adobe Reader 9.1, so I'm not sure where the problem lies). Here are the problems...
If I have a large number of pdf's open in tabs, I can view one, but to print, I have to click once somewhere in the toolbar before the print button works - essentially I have to click twice to activate the print button. After that, I cannot activate another tab until I first click somewhere on the document window. Between all these clicks, the mouse pointer is switching back and forth between the nice and smooth Linux mouse pointer, and the ugly and pixelly pointer that Reader uses for some reason. Finally, if I have more tabs open than fit in the width of the window, clicking on the left or right arrows that scroll the tabs scrolls all the way to the very last or very first tab. It will not just move over by one tab. If there is a really, really long list of tabs, I cannot get to the ones in the middle.
Anyone have a solution for this? I cannot use Evince or other Linux-based pdf viewers due to the startling lack of tab support (really should be a common thing by now, in my opinion). I just don't want to have to juggle tons of windows.
    Thanks!

I am not fully familiar with Mint, but it is based on Ubuntu ..
Update to the latest version of Adobe Reader, and re-check these issues.
    TO UPDATE
Check in Synaptic that the 'partner' software repository is enabled.
    At terminal type:
    (if required) update your system
    ~:   sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade  <Enter>
install latest Acrobat Reader (for Ubuntu Linux), AND font packs
    ~:   sudo apt-get install acroread acroread-fonts  <Enter>
Then look for Adobe Reader in the applications menu (top left of screen).
