How should an application developer handle Adobe AIR upgrades on Windows and Mac?

My questions concern Windows 7 (and later) and Mac OS X:
Is Adobe AIR upgraded automatically? In other words, by default (if the user does not uncheck something during installation), is there a service/polling mechanism that checks for a new version of Adobe AIR and recommends an update to the user?
What happens if a user has an older version of Adobe AIR installed, and my application requires a more recent Adobe AIR version? Do I, as an application developer, have to do something or is it handled by Adobe AIR automatically?
Have Adobe AIR introduced many backward compatibility issues in the past? Is it possible for a user to have multiple versions of Adobe AIR installed at the same time? Can I, as an application developer, specify that this exact version of Adobe AIR is needed by my application?
If there sometimes are backwards compatibility issues with Adobe AIR. Is there a way for me as an application developer to try out a new version before it is released to the normal users? In other words, is there a way for me to make sure that my application works with the next version of Adobe AIR before it is released by the normal channels to the general user base?
Is there something else which should be taken into consideration when it comes to Adobe AIR upgrades and versioning issues?Well we would suffer especially much from two of the drawbacks listed at Packaging a captive runtime bundle for desktop computers:
The AIR in-browser API for installing and launching an AIR application from a web page is not supported
AIR update API and framework are not supported
We are using the Air application as a solution for printing, which is invoked using the AIR in-browser API when the user clicks the "Print" button. I would guess the route to make it work with a captive runtime (which was something new to me), which I see as a normal stand alone application, would be to register a specific MIME type with the OS and each Web browser which is handled by our print application. And let a file of our new MIME type contain the information passed in the in-browser invocation at the moment. That would trigger the application when a user clicks Print.
We also use the AIR update API to update our application. Being without it means that we would need to create our own update mechanism.
These two paths to handle the given drawbacks above would mean a lot of work for us. Especially as we want to support both Windows and Mac. It might be worth it if the answers to my questions in the original post indicates that we can expect another type of problems instead.
I am still interested in answers to my original questions. But we will certainly take the captive runtime approach into consideration. As I didn't know about it, I really appreciate your answer! -
Cannot access Adobe Air after download
Please can someone help? I have downloaded Adobe Air three times and all I get is a winzip file that does not give me a .dll which is what I need in order to activate the launchpad?

I have an asus Eee pc 901 Linux. Flash is pre installed like the rest. But now I need to upgrade it. I can download it from the adobe site, but what do i have to do then? Cause nothing happens.

I am having trouble running the packaged adobe Air installer (downloaded from http://get.adobe.com/air). The .dmg image mounts fine, then when I double-click or select the package nothing runs. I even tried to run the installer inside the package (from the gui and a shell) and nothing executes. I get no error messages either.
I recently upgraded from OS X 10.3 to 10.4.11, and have tried all I can find on the web.
A summary of what I've tried:
- checked file permissions
- run installer as administrator (every time)
- downloaded the package several times and from several locations(adobe.com, cnet.com)
- tried to run the installer on a terminal using sudo command
- followed this similar thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2024084) and tried everything on it (repair disk permissions with disk util, create new admin account to install - couldn't install it there either)
- There are no packages in /Library/Receipts,
- Nothing inside Applications, nothing inside Applications/Utilities

Please help if someone has any other knowledge!

Win 8.1 Adobe Air installation problem
Purchased a program that runs on Adobe Air. Downloaded Air and have attempted to install. Keeps giving an error and says I need to see my admin. I am the admin and am installing with admin credentials. Anyone have a work around on this or even an idea of what is going on? I am running Win 8.1 32 bit and can usually install anything I want without difficulty.
Thanks for your help in advance.Finally, you have to do the following ( under Mac OS Snow Leopard ):
-Uninstall ALL air applications.
-Uninstall AIR, using the Uninstaller App ( located in /Applications/Utilities )
AND
-Delete the following directory:
sudo rm -rf /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library/Application\ Support/Adobe/AIR/
And BINGO! after doing that, reinstall adobe air, and tweetdeck!!!
There you go, at least that worked for me, hopefully it works for you! -

The command adl tells me :
Adobe AIR could not be found
Use "-runtime <dir>" to specify the location of the

Even if i specify the path wehe adobe air is :
adl -runtime C:\Program Files\Adobe AIR\Versions\1.0
Please help me. I really want to know more about Air.

Adobe Air installed with Cricut Craft Room
I installed Cricut Craft Room and in the process, Adobe Air was downloaded. When I went to sync to Cricut Craft Room, I received this Air error message: "Sorry, an error has occurred. This application cannot be installed because this installer has been mis-configured. Please contact the application author for assistance."
I have un-installed, tried to re-install and still no success. It appears to download correctly until I try and run something. I have Windows 7 environment and Air 3.7.0.1860 was installed.What operating system are you using? Here's a post that should help, though the file location is for XP:

On Vista and above, you'd put the eulaAccepted file in the C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\AIR folder. -

And it required adobe air, then I downloaded adobe air but then when I tried again to open that program I get an error message says application descriptor could not be found for this application. Try re-installing or contacting the publisher for assistance

I need to update Adobe AIR to continue onto Acrobat.com but when I do the update it says 'This application requires an update to Adobe AIR but downloading that update was not successful.' How do I get it to update correctly?

It sounds like the Acrobat.com Desktop Applicaiton is trying to update. Unfortunately that update doesn't exist anymore and the Acrobat.com Desktop Application is no longer supported. I'd recommend uninstalling that application from your system. To access Acrobat.com moving forward, visit http://acrobat.com/signin.html

I can open the ADA it starts to download then nothing happens, once in a while something saying that I need adobe air to download pops up. I tried to download but also nothing happens. It might be some setting in my mac, I just got it today so and I'm not use to lion so I dont know if it is a setting in lion or what. Any help would be appreicated.
