Adobe CS2 quits on new mc pro

Myself and another coworker just got great new mac pros. Our G4's were getting really slow. This is happening to both of us. When we are running more than one CS2 program they start quitting. Didn't happen on G4. If I am in photoshop, and Illustrator and InDesign are running, then occasionally the program that I am not using will quit. They also aren't running as fast as we had thought they would on these turbo machines. Any ideas what is going on? I heard CS2 wasn't made for the intel. Is that the problem? Is there anything we can do to fix it? Thanks~

You need 4GB of RAM for proper running in a Mac Pro.
You should not use Migration Assistant when it comes to applications, those all need to be installed fresh.
There are problems with Version Cue I think and another plug-in or bridge. Any driver which is PPC will have to run under Rosetta.
Yes, you want to upgrade to CS3.
What you are seeing and reporting has been posted a number of times, going back to introduction of Mac Pro last August. There were lots of threads discussing Photoshop CS2.

  • CS2 Quits constantly, new machine, same old problem

    Hello.
my g5 quad was replaced by apple with a 3.0GHz MacPro and while running certain apps hard, like CS2, Adobe Camera Raw, or Adobe Bridge, they will quit unexpectedly just as they did on the defunct g5 we had.
I have tried everything, just as i did with my Quad, to repair the situation. reseating the RAM, resetting the PRAM, deleting the cache, running DU to repair permissions/repair the disk, running AHT in loop, AND starting with a fresh OS install. none of my files aside from my music and my photos are from the g5 i had. this is not an importing anomaly.
i went to the apple store and they told me that this may be because it is running in Rosetta. i also asked them why my 2 year old PC with an single core AMD Athlon64 3500 and 4 GB of PC3200 can run CS2 so much faster than the MacPro (ridiculous to watch but the PC is actually 2 times faster than the apple if set to the same task at the same time), and they said this may also be due to Rosetta and/or leopard not yet being here. i have been assured that Leopard and CS3 will fix all this. i don't know what to do. i don't want to bring the machine back again. i feel so badly because those guys have tried so hard to help us because they know it is (was) our business machine and that we bought it to speed up our work flow. unfortunately, i don't think the machine is capable of that kind of thing, and i don't trust it to do much anymore. Apple has been very kind to us, and so have their people, but the machines we have used have not been quite so kind or helpful once our troubles began.
i'm not into fighting the holiday crowds for parking and lugging a 40 pound machine around... and frankly, i would be pretty upset if i were on the apple team and saw me back at the store with the brand new machine after all the hard work they put in to help us.
i've stopped using the apple machine as i am afraid to push it hard for my business or multi-task. as a photographer, i am certain that i am not pushing it as hard as a videographer would be. but, i can't run more than CS2 and maybe a web browser (firefox 2.0 is very slow and unresponsive on this machine) without it slowing down... or crashing a program altogether and losing all my work. CS2 is what i use...
so, i've resumed work on my windows machine, and basically use the apple as a storage device/paper weight. that was a $5000+ mistake our business has made, and it's tough to recover from that in my business with one PC based machine that works and an awfully expensive apple paperweight.
NED SNOWING wrote back to me and had this to say:
"hey said this may also be due to Rosetta and/or leopard not yet being here. i have been assured that Leopard and CS3 will fix all this.
This is correct. As all PowerPC applications, like Adobe CS2, have to run through a software "translation" layer everything is slowed down for that application. This is why CS2 apllications run no better than the G5s on the Mac Pro. However, once the like of Adobe etc release their applications as Universal or Intel binary applications you'll see the performance skyrocket forward.
Due to Apple's accelerated transition the like of Adobe have in actual fact been caught a little short in their developement timings. Be aware that the use of Rosetta for applications is only temporary.
By the way, there's no reason that you could run Windows under Boot Camp on the Mac Pro in the meantime.
    Mac Pro 2.66GHz 3GB/5x300GB (see bio)/ATi X1900 XT/AE/BT ; Dell 2405FPW Mac OS X (10.4.8) MacBook Pro 15.4" C2D 2.16GHz 2GB/120GB/Glossy ; Mac mini CD 1.66GHz 2GB/80GB/SD"
    My question stands at this:
still, i do not understand why the machine is so dramatically slower than my 2 year old PC with a single core AMD64 XP3500 and 4 GB of PC3200 AND 2 near full 80GB IDE hard drives.
the Quad was ridiculously fast. it was so fast that i thought there was something worng with it. i never wanted to use my windows machine again and then it failed and failed and deleted our data and failed again...
if i am understanding you correctly, you're saying that this machine SHOULD run CS2 at a rate on par at least with the Quad... well, i invite you to show me what i am doing wrong, PLEASE. The failure of the Quad crippled our business, and now this machine has put us at a $5000+ deficit without anything to show for it. It takes me more time to use the Mac than my PC… IN CS2… and your statement is that the MacPro should run at speeds equal to or at least comparable to the g5. Mine doesn’t. and I am not at all happy about having to bring a brand new machine they replaced along with my PC to the store to demonstrate how slow their stuff is when the Quad blew this heap away AND could multitask. The Apple guys at the store have been great, and this just plain stinks to have to bring back a machine that's supposed to be working and isn't, AFTER being replaced. it's pretty damned embarrassing.
no errors in AHT, Mem test is fine. 2 500GB hard drives, primary drive has 400GB free when i am not working on a project. 250GB when i am. all my stuff is backed up on Terabyte Servers. the replacement machine they gave us had 2GB of RAM (4-512 sticks) and the Apple Store installed 2 1GB sticks as the machine we turned in was equipped as such.
    please, please, please help me.

while running certain apps hard, like CS2, Adobe Camera Raw, or Adobe Bridge, they will quit unexpectedly just as they did on the defunct g5 we had.
The I would say that you're installing some software that is problematic else you used the Migration Assistant to get your data from one to the other. Either way, I would clean install the system and install a minimum of software to ensure that the system is stable before adding to it. I find it hugely unlikely that two completely different systems to exhibit the exact same issue.
Additionally, if you have installed Adobe Version Cue 2 then that might well be your problem.
still, i do not understand why the machine is so dramatically slower than my 2 year old PC with a single core AMD64 XP3500 and 4 GB of PC3200 AND 2 near full 80GB IDE hard drives.
Have you ever had a conversation with someone with whom you did not have a common language and had to use a translator? This is the situation that Apple has with Rosetta (where Rosetta is the translator). If you take into account these mechanics you can't expect this scenario to have a conversation as quick as two people talking in a common language, even if one of the parties isn't very good at that language.
if i am understanding you correctly, you're saying that this machine SHOULD run CS2 at a rate on par at least with the Quad
No… I'm not saying that. What I said was that the Mac Pro should perform equivalently to a low end G5. I would expect a 3GHz MP to be roughly equivalent to a 2.3GHz DC PowerMac G5 in the best case. To expect more than that with Rosetta in the picture would be rather delusional.
I am not at all happy about having to bring a brand new machine they replaced along with my PC to the store to demonstrate how slow their stuff is when the Quad blew this heap away AND could multitask.
I wouldn't be best pleased about that either although I don't really know what you're expecting any of us to say. As I said earlier my best advise would be to erase the boot/application drive and then install everything new and from the original CDs/DVDs. If under the simplest setup possible you still experience crashing then I would contact Adobe or which ever software developer for the problematic application(s).
Otherwise, just return the thing, eat the restocking fee and wait until Adobe CS3 is released.

  • Trying to install an Adobe Application on my New Mac Pro????

I just purchased a new Mac Pro. I got it mainly because I want to be able to use programs like After Effects CS3 at fast speeds. I have like 5 gigs in my computer right now so I'm excited to get started. Only thing is......my version of After Effects CS3 was acting weird so I decided to Re-install it. I threw the unwanted After Effects Install in the Program "App Zapper" which supposedly erases everything associated with the program......essentially you're supposed to be able to zap yourself CLEAN of the program.
When I tried to reinstall the computer told me that I can't install because it thinks its still there?? aAre there remnants of the program to remove so the installer doesn't think its on there??? Where are they??? I tried to find anything named After Effects CS3....I can't find anything??? Any Advice

    Hi Keith Middlemiss;
I had a very similar thing happen to me with the PS CS3 beta. I removed it and attempted to install the real version when it came out only to be given an error message about it still being on my system. Finally I went to the Adobe forum and discovered that there was an uninstall script there. Once I ran that then CS3 installed without any problems.
I was looking around on my system for tracks of this script but I was not able to find any.
My suggestion would be to go to the Adobe forum and check around for uninstall scripts. While I do like the Adobe applications, I hate the way they way they stick stuff everywhere in your system.

  • CS2 quits on the Mac Pro

CS2 quits when I try to export as a PDF, when I place links, print or go from page to page. Any suggestions? More RAM? Upgrade to CS5?

    Hello Bob:
Thanks for your response. I'm going to see if more ram will help first. I'm going to go from the factory installed 3 GB to 8 GB. My G5 was shutting down altogether when I first got it and more ram nipped that problem in the bud. (I upgraded to only 3 GB - go figure. I guess the Mac Pro just needs more.)
    Thanks again!

  • Presentation unexpectedly quits on new MacBook Pro

I have transfered a keynote presentation created on a Powerbook to my new MacBook Pro, but it unexpectedly quits when launched on my new computer. It works fine on the Powerbook and other keynote presentations open fine on the MacBook Pro.
Any ideas on how I can get this presentation to open successfully on my MacBook Pro?

I am having the same problem on my MacBook.
Keynote 3, will sometimes will "Quit Unexpectedly" immediately after launch, or after opening an existing presentation. This seems to be intermittent as occasionally I can open a presentation, work with it, and save without Keynote quitting with seemingly no rhyme or reason to when it will launch and when it will quit.
Makes me feel very queasy about using it for presentations. Will it decide not to launch 5 minutes before a big presentation? gulp.

  • Does partitioning new MacBook Pro to enable adobe suite cs2 make sense?

I am a casual user of Adobe suite Cs2 and it meets all my needs perfectly. I've invested so much time learning it that I am reluctant to switch to any other programs. However, my beautiful new Macbook Pro using Mavericks is incompatible with Cs2. Is there a way to partition my hard drive so that I can use Cs2 with and earlier OS and still use Mavericks for everything else? Is it my new computer or Mavericks that's the culprit?

Intuitively, it would seem that your comment makes perfect sense

But the OP would be running CS2 in Snow Leopard Server installed in Parallels on his Mavericks MacBook Pro Retina which has either an i5 or i7 CPU.
The fact of the matter is that CS2 will run faster for the OP than it originally ran for him on a PowerMac with a PowerPC CPU chip manufactured back before 2006.
I hope that mclandau has use for all of the extra time that he will gain using CS2 on his new MacBook Pro Retina!

  • Using Adobe CS2 on New Pro Book, Illustrator crashes consistently

I just got my MacBook Pro (3G RAM, 150G HD, External 120G HD, wireless mighty mouse, OSX 10.4.8) Installed Adobe CS2 Premium Edition.
Illustrator crashes every single time I use the Pathfinder tool (any filter).
Checked with Adobe, they say it is a problem between Illustrator and OSX 10.4.8 and I need to install 10.4.7, which they say will solve the problem.
How do I get a copy of 10.4.7 to fix this issue.
I will not go into how irritated I am that Adobe has not created an update to fix these incompatabilities or the fact that both Adobe and Apple know these problems exist yet do not mention it before you spend 3 grand on hardware or 1 grand on software. If an auto manufacturer did that they would be sued immediately. But since it is not my life, just my business that is in danger, who cares...
    I know I said I wouldn't go there, but I am steamed!

    Greetings,
We just received 12 MacPros that shipped with 10.4.8,
so taking them back to 10.4.7 is not a realistic fix for this 10.4.8 bug.
We did do all other suggestions we could find short of that, on Adobe support, and in these forums: update to Illustrator CS2 12.0.1, toss all the legal HTML files that had bad fonts, close the Appearance
palet then close Illustrator, toss the Illustrator plist file, repair permissions,
but only got marginal results. In files that have complex paths or raster files embedded, or are large dimensionally,
using the Pathfinder tools still crashes Illustrator.
Anyone have any new suggestions that could help us?? We use Illustrator quite a bit, particularly in signage, and this is almost a show stopper for even bothering to set these Macs up! Anyone gone back to CS on a MacPro?
I have sent a note to Apple Feedback requesting a fix.. 10.4.9??

  • I bought a new MacBook Pro and every time  I open Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 quit unexpectedly.

Has any one had trouble opening Photoshop Elements 9 with the new MacBook Pro?

Okay, then you have made a whole bunch of trouble for yourself. First, download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
and then you can manually remove as many bits of PSE as you can find. Not only the application itself, but also in hard drive>library>application support>adobe. And go to your username>library>preferences and delete everything there pertaining to PSE. That library is hidden. To see it, click the Go menu in the Finder and hold down the Option key and it will appear below the little house for your user account.
Then go here to download the installer and install it from scratch. You can never move an installed copy of PSE (except for the app store version):
    Download Photoshop Elements products | 9, 8, 7
