Adobe CS5 programs have trouble opening folders on external hard drives under 10.10.2

Just upgraded 2 mac's to 10.10.2. One is a late 2013 Mac Pro, the other is a lot-of-the line, BTO iMac 5K. (Processors and Ram are not an issue)
Both InDesign and Illustrator (CS5) are having difficulty opening folders on external hard drives. Mac Pro is connected to a 5GB LaCie d2 via thunderbolt cable, while the 5K is connected to a 2TB WD my book studio for Mac via FW800 with an apple branded Thunderbolt adapter. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Using the File>open command then drilling down to the selected folder on the Hard Disk drive, the finder sits blank with the spinning beach ball going.
Other local folders open up quickly and populate file lists with no problems.
Some folders on the external drive can be accessed through the File>open finder dialogue however they are folders that contain fewer sub-folders and files.
Update while typing this...
Both Folders that were giving us problems contained a shortcut. Hiding that shortcut inside anouther local folder seems to have cleared up the trick. This is a short term work around and I am wondering if Apple is aware of this issue or if others have found the same problem as I have and if this work around fixes their issues?

How long have you been running 10.9?
In my case the external drives go to sleep and have to wake up. Not much to do with Mavericks, just hardware sleeping to save energy. Note that 10.9 is much more energy aware and may put things to sleep more often.  That may be a fair trade off

Adobe Bridge crashes when i open a Lacie external hard rive. Started when i uploaded Yosemite?

Finder crashes occur both on my MacBook Pro (4,1) and MacBook Air (2,1). There is very little in common between the hardware of the two systems except the Santa Rosa processor. One has HDD and the other SSD. One has 6GB in DDR2 memory in two dimms and one 2GB DDR3 soldered. One has an 8600M and one a 9400. One starts a bunch of apps at login and one starts nothing. And so on. Since it happens on different kinds of systems, it's definitely not a hardware problem with certain specific hardware. And I'm pretty sure I saw a report from someone with a MacPro.
I've looked at a lot of finder crash logs. A number of them seem to happen when something (memory or an object) is being freed and an error occurs. This causes an abort and the finder is killed and restarts. Not exactly a "crash". More like controlled flight into the ground. The other cases are probably not catching the error and getting seg faults, so those actually are crashes. Unfortunately, the place this happens seems to be different every time but usually related to finder or AppKit.
I suspect a memory corruption bug somewhere. I've pushed my system by opening and closing
folders, scrolling up and down, and opening and closing subfolders, and once the problem happens, it is usually reproducible for a few minutes (or a few repeats of the action that caused the crash).
Then it will often "magically" start working or a slight variation of behavior, e.g., opening a folder directly vs. using a finder window sidebar alias (or vice-versa) will work.

  • Will not open leopard on external hard drive

I am running Lion on an iMac 27" 4 core and I am trying to open on an external hard drive loaded with Sow leopard but the screen shows the apple icon and just sits there with no loading spinner. I also have a 13" macbook pro and have no trouble in opening the same external disk with snow leopard. The imac also does not like opening from the dvd.

If by opening you really mean booting, then most likely it can't handle the differences between the iMac and the MBP. There are differences with machine-specific builds. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2681 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186 for details.

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.

  • I have downloaded mavericks to my external hard drive, what do I do next to go back to using Mavericks?

i have downloaded mavericks to my external hard drive, what do I do next to go back to using Mavericks?

I would not use Time Machine for this task. Rather I suggest you clone to the external drive. You can then boot from the external drive to restore your clone. First, purchase Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Clone using Carbon Copy Cloner
      1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Select the Source volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      3. Select the Destination volume from the right side dropdown menu.
      4. Click on the Clone button.
      5. When completed select Disk Center from the Window menu.
      6. Click on the Recovery HD tab then select the backup drive from the list.
      7. Click on the button labeled "Create a Recovery partition for this volume."
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
You now have a fully bootable copy of your iMac's hard drive. When you receive your iMac back after the drive replacement you can boot it from this backup and use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore the backup from the external drive to the internal drive. The process is identical except you will switch the Source and Destination volumes - Source will be the external drive; Destination will be the internal drive.
Because the newly installed drive will most likely have OS X installed you can skip Steps 5-7. You can now continue to use your external backup drive by setting up scheduled backups with CCC. No need to use Time Machine.

after some sorting out your article, I clicked on a question mark with the message find the missing folder.  This brought me to a page where I could choose a folder by year and click on it.  The question marks disappeared and the photos were available.  In some cases I had to click on the year folder for each subfolder by date.
The find missing folders message did not bring me to the finder window in which I could click on folders in the hard drive itself.  I appreciate your help big time!!

  • My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive

My mac air says hard drive full and 90% is full of 'other' which I cant work out what 'other' is as i Have transferred most to my external hard drive.
Do you know how I can tell how large each file is taking up and what my 'other' category could be?
    thanks

Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
      Empty the Trash.
    - Start iPhoto.
      Empty its trash.
      Restart.
    Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files.  (See suggestions for where to purchase hard drives at the end of this message.)

Methodology to protect your data.  Backups vs. Archives.  Long-term data protection:

    Deleting files:
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Additional reference on freeing disk space:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
    Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.  This will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • I'm trying to back up 10.6.8 (snow leopard) and all my files before upgrade to Mavericks.  I have an old but sturdy external hard drive...how many GB available will I probably need to back up the whole thing? thanks!

I'm trying to back up 10.6.8 (snow leopard) and all my files before upgrade to Mavericks.  I have an old but sturdy external hard drive...how many GB available will I probably need to back up the whole thing? thanks!

You will need a separate partition unless you plan to use the entire drive. You will need an amount of space somewhat larger than the total space now used on your startup drive. If you select the startup drive's Desktop icon, then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. Used space will be shown in the topmost panel. Add a GB or two to that number to determine how much space you'll need for the backup.
Do not backup on a drive that has any files you want to keep. You can make a bootable backup as follows:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Lost Folders on External Hard Drive

    Hi all,
Today I tried to delete my time machine back up to free some space on my external hard drive. Unfortunately my mac would not delete the back up via Trash, so as a last resort I ran a terminal to locate the folder within my external hard drive and force delete it. I couldn't just delete the partition because i had lots of other stuff on the external hard drive.
After the terminal command was successful ,deleting only what was in the trash folder within my external hard drive, the back up was deleted. However at the same time three folders have disappeared from within my external hard drive all containing films i was storing. Strangely all three of the folders that appear to have been deleted had an asterisk infront of the folder name.
I can't figure out what has happened to them and how they were seemingly deleted. If anyone could shed any light on this issue i would be very grateful.

That's the cause of the problem.
The way you described it in your first post, makes me think the files could still be on your external HD.
The problem is, you moved the files without letting iTunes know.
The locations are stored in the 'iTunes Library' file (more info here).
If you move them using the Finder the links are lost.
You should have changed the 'iTunes Music folder' (Preferences>Advanced>General) to the music folder on your external HD and then use the 'Consolidate Library...' command from the Advanced menu in the menubar.
That copies all music to the 'iTunes Music folder' as set in the preferences.
It won't help now, but you can use this procedure next time.
It's also important to understand that when iTunes doesn't find the Library at startup, it will reset the 'iTunes Music folder' to the default location on the internal HD. Always connect your ext. HD before running iTunes.
    Now to the possible rescue.
If the files are still on your ext. HD, you can use a script to restore the dead links.
Go to www.dougscripts.com and type 'dead' (without the quotes) in the 'search scripts:' field. Of the scripts that will be found, 'iTunes Track CPR v1.3' looks the logical choice to do the job.
    Hope this helps.

I have itunes directory on an external hard drive and want to direct a new installation of itunes on windows 8 to use it. I tried holding down ctrl and clicking itunes and after many tries got it to work one time. When I went back in later it had reverted back to a blank version of itunes and I cant get ctrl to work again. Any other ideas?

This is sometimes caused by a problem with the iTunesPrefs.xml file, normally found at C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml. Try dragging this to the desktop and trying again.
Alternatively the problem may be that you have McAfee AV and it is preventing iTunes from updating the same file and thus causing the problem. See Why does iTunes delete my itunesprefs.xml? for details.

    Hi
You can do this - by not doing it the way You describe as it will not work.
    a. the external hard disk - MUST BE - Mac OS extended (hfs) formatted -
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - will work for most things - BUT NOT FOR VIDEO (iMovie, iDVD or FinalCut doesn't matter)
    b. Do not alter or move any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
    on DeskTop/Finder - at all
All moving's of Events and Projects must be done within the iMovie Application - then connections will not break.
(move them back and see if iMovie remembers them - then do move as described above)

Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).
If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.  If they are not a multiple CD set you still need to make sure the disc number fields are set correctly or all empty.
