Adobe drops Flash for Linux, except Chrome
Hi,
http://blogs.adobe.com/flashplayer/2012 … linux.html
How long until someone cuts Flash out of Chrome and provides the PPAPI for the other browsers? Or better yet, how long until this awful Flash will be a thing of the past and will be replaced by open concepts like HTML5.
Alex
No. Companies don't need to change OS for this. They can always use Google Chrome (for Linux). However why should they discontinue providing a standalone plugin. They can provide a standalone plugin which any PPAPI implementing web browser can use (in the future if firefox or webkit based ones support the API). Why restrict it to chrome?
You're right, but i was thinking if half+ of the web is based on flash, there will be tons of linux users (like me) that couldn't see that half+ of the web content or doesn't want to chage their web browser. If linux is a poorly supported flash platform, why invest money on make linux friendly web apps and games?
Besides Mozilla said that they're not interested in support PPAPI right now...

Why is Adobe dropping support for pre 3GS phones?!
I think it's a bad decision to drop support for pre 3GS devices. There are still many out there and if support is dropped we're forced to still use the old PFI to reach the complete audience.
It's clear that OpenGL ES 2 offers a lot more fancy stuff than OpenGL ES 1.5 does, but still, things like GPU_VECTOR or sophisticated blending are perfectly doable with OpenGL ES 1.5.
And if a clean implementation is really not possible, Adobe should at least allow to publish for old devices even if this means that not all optimization techniques can be used.
I develop iPhone apps using different technologies and AIR is attractive for me because I can target with one project a big range of different plattforms. If Adobe drops support for old phones, this advantage is heavily shortened!
What is your opinion on the this development?Apple have dropped support for pre-3GS because to pull of the features and performance in iOS 4.3 they had to develop just for the ARM7 chip, and not for the ARM6. They probably have a good sense of the number of people that have the older devices, and think it's ok to not update the software on those devices.
The same may be true for Adobe.
I am trying to find out how to make AIR 2.6 and AIR 2.0 live together in Flash CS5. If I work it out I'll let you know. -
The latest Flash Player for Linux has major version 7. More
and more Websites exist for which version 7 is not sufficient
anymore. Are newer versions of the Flash Player ported to Linux? If
so, does anybody know any release date?> I am not sure that I am a Winger or not,
It doesn't sound like it from the post you jsut made :)
> however I am an Electrical Engineer
> and have my PHD in Engineering and Networks.
> I design and built security system for networks and CCTV
and hold
> three US Patents.
That's nice for you :)
> With that stated, I would like to ask you try Linux and
see what is is to
> be
> in control of your OS, instead of it controlling you.
Personally, I'm quite happy with Windows, and as the software
I develop is
for Windows, and it has al the tools I need for doing that ..
so it makes no
sense for me to use anything else. So I will decline your
invitation, it
really would just be a waste of time for me with my current
job etc.
And for others, such as yourself, Linux can very well be the
better choice
(for the various reasons you outline).
Its all a matter of your requirements and what the various
platforms offer
to meet those requirements.
> Evidently you are a mainstream user, and there is
nothing wrong with that,
> except you speak as if you understand both OS's. It is
evident you do not
> understand why people have dropped Windows and moved on.
to Linux.
I do understand, but it really is irrelevant to the
complaints here. Noone
is saying that Linux is a bad operating system, or that
people should not
use it. Its a personal (or business) decision for what
operating system to
use.
But as part of that decision, one should take into account
that availablilty
of software. If you can get what you want with Linux, that's
great. If
not, then maybe you should look at a platform that DOES
provide it. If
developing flash applications, or visiting Flash-based
websites, is what you
need to be doing, then Linux does not seem the correct
choice.
As an analogy, if you were buying a home entertainment system
that did not
include a provision for a DVD player, and you wanted to play
DVD's, then
your decsion to use that system would not be a good one,
depite how much
better the sound or video quality might be.
Other people (the Linux whingers) do seem to think that,
because they feel
Linux is the best operating system, and that they have chosen
to use it,
that EVERYONE must feel that way, and that all companies
should make their
software for Linux etc etc, and that to no do so is somhow a
bad business
decision and that indicates membership of the secret
anti-linux society that
is headed by Bill Gates etc etc. Really.. people that make
those sort of
claims and complatins are either naive, fanatics, or insecure
in their
decision to use Linux.
> Simply put Linux is a better OS In My Humble and
Educated Opinion
That may well be.
But, again, it is completely irrelevant regarding the
availability of a
Linux version of Flash Player. And certainly irrelevant to
the complaints
that porting to Linux should be trivial and that Adobe are in
some
clandestine arrangement with Microsoft to kill of Linux (or
whatever other
conspiracy theories they seem to have).
If Adobe/Macromedia are wanting to get their Flash platform
onto as many
users computers as possible, then it is sensible to develop
for Windows and
Mac first, and port to less popular (consumer) operating
systems after that.
Especially if they are in the situation of having a codebase
that was not
originally written to be cross-platform (its quite an old
codebase), which
makes porting to other OS non-trivial. Ideally, if Adobe was
starting on
Flash Player completely from scratch, they would certainly
develop it to be
cross-platform from the ground up so porting WOULD then be
trivial. But
that is not the way things are, whinging about it isn't going
to change it.
Anyway .. good luck with Linux, patents etc etc, and I hope
the Flash Player
for Linux platforms works well when finally fully released (I
think its
still in Beta).

Flash for linux .tar.gz package is still the old 346 version
i trid to upgrade my flash, so i download the .tar.gz package from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ , after the file was installed, i loaded a flash video in firefox, and found the version is 11.2.202.346. i also downloaded the rpm package, the version is 356.
i think the .tar.gz package should also be updated and i suggest that the version should be containded in the file name so that it is easy to distinguish.11.2.202.346 was and is the last version to be developed for Linux. There won't be any more.

Is YouTube going to drop Flash for HTML5?
My site http://www.fuhshnizzle.com uses the YouTube player which still runs on Flash.
Anyone know of any plans by YouTube to drop Flash in favor of HTML5?
Should I be concerned?
I know they've been offering HTML5 beta for over a year but this is a grey topic....
Thanks!!You may want to bring this up in a different forum like maybe http://forums.adobe.com/community/design_development/webdesign
This forum is product specific (Adobe Contribute). -
Why is the "streaming' Adobe Photoshop only for students on Chrome OS or WIndows?
Considering Adobe hasn't acknowledged the Linux crowd that has been petitioning for a port for years, the announcement of "streaming' Adobe Photoshop for only students on Chrome OS or Windows doesn't surprise me in the least. Is this a beta only decision or is there another reason you've given the Linux crowd a blindeye?
It boggles my mind why I pay $50 a month to get snubbed and only be able to run your apps in a VM. I've tried to jump ship and find alternatives, but in America's corporate world you find that alternatives can't handle the proprietary design assets handed to you by creatives.I really do like Adobe tools but the way they select platforms to support doesn't make sense to me.

How to give the root path in flash for linux os?
hi all,
This is santhosh, I have a problem with xml path in flash. Iam trying to load some swf files into another swf file, it's woking fine in windows os but when I check this file in linux it is not taking the path which I gave for loading external swf files. So, any help on the same will be grate for me.
thanks in advance.....
Thanks and regards

I guess the path you are using is wrong. It works on your mashiene as the src path is available. When you run the app on a server (jspx file) there is no src path as long as you don't include it in your WAR wich you should not do anyway.
If you need to access such data you can create a folder in your webroot folder and the the resources from there as /xml_folder_name or if the xml files shouldn't be visible from the outside put the folder under hte web-inf folder.

Adobe releases Flash for Mac beta with GPU acceleration
Sounds like this might be worth a try on the new MacBooks.
Let us know if it helps and off loads the work from the CPU to the GPU with Flash.Hi,
the german computer magazine c't did some preliminary tests with that plugin on a Mac Mini 3.1 (Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 3 GByte RAM, Mac OS X 10.6.3) and the 1080p Trailer The Last Air Bender http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USUHXzapRoU
Flash Player 10.1 RC 2 -> Activity Monitor showed 90-120 % CPU useage
Gala PlugIn -> 50-60% CPU useage
So quite a step in the right direction.
Although funny thing is, that with the HTML5 player from YouTube http://www.youtube.com/html5 used with Safari the CPU useage got down to 15% !!
All that as said, preliminary...

It's over, Adobe drops AIR for the Linux platform.
Even though I can understand why, for me this is "the straw that broke the camel's back".
I think "cross platform" in general has been a pipe-dream. It's time to realize that if you want to create good software for multiple platforms, you will have to go native. They say the focus is now on Android and other mobile platforms. It sounds great but in reality the Android AIR runtime isn't all that great, and probably never will be. The hope of having a single codebase that will run on multiple platforms with minimal effort just doesn't exist.No.

Is Flash Builder dead? I just found out that adobe has dropped Flash on mobile devices
I did alot of research on software to develop apps for the mobile market. I liked Flash Builder since it will create apps for all 3 types of mobile devices at once. Downloaded the 30 day trial and have started on the 5 day training course.
Today I saw an article from sitepoint that abobe has dropped development and support for Flash on mobile devices.
The end result of Flash Builder gives you a .swf file in an html wrapper thus we are developing flash when adobe has dropped Flash for mobile. Am I wasting my time? Should I go to another software package?
http://www.sitepoint.com/adobe-abandons-mobile-flash/
Adobe Abandons Flash on Mobile Devices
HELPthe plugin for mobile browsers is the only thing they will not update in the future. The normal desktop browser plugin is very alive
Everything else is active... they are still continuing to work on exporting to Android,iOS, and rim playbook via AIRapps in both flash builder and flash pro.
The only difference going forward is mobile websites viewing flash (apps are unchanged). Basically... apple won
Not a big deal so far, but everywhere you look people are frantic and asking -whats next?
I like air for ios and android. Im sticking with it -
Flash cs3 or 4 for linux?
i know this subject has come up 80 times before, however
recent news makes me wonder how likely it is that adobe will soon
release flash for Linux,
news bit 1:adobe donated code to the Mozilla foundation
2:with the recent newcomer silverlight not supporting
Linux-browsers, it seems like adobes best move would be to cater to
true universal support and the growing Linux market
3:dells recent Linux endeavour, should be a sign to adobe
that the market for linux is expanding rapidly on the desktop
4:adobe joins open source development labs
it may be wishful thinking on my part but i think adobe is
seriously considering thisHmmm, perhaps they put a *true* minimum spec, and a recommended spec, because when I tried to install CS3 on a computer with 512MB RAM it wouldn't allow the install to go through.
Glad to hear it worked out for you though! -
i m trying to get my hand on Air3 runtime for Linux, as it fixes a lot of graphic refresh issues, i know Adobe do not support it but i thought third parties did.
This link says it does but it's actually 2.6
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Adobe-AIR-Runtime-for-Linux/1258475419/3
We use Adobe Robohelp do generate Airhelp and our 500 + employees are all using Linux.
I have no problem with Adobe stopping further Air for Linux dev... But they could at least let us package the runtime rpm ourselves...
The press release mentionned that only 1 percent of their Air runtime download was for Linux ! They forgot to mention that this 1 percent was their largest clients.
We use to download 1 rpm, and later on installed it on 500 machines...
Will the Air source code only accessible to mobile partners ?
Thanks much
ThomasHi Thomas,
I don't have any new AIR Linux information to give out, but I'd suggest reposting this over on the AIR blog. I'll also ping our PM team to see if they have anything new that might help.

Under windows flash runs so much better, why does Adobe put a plugin for Linux when it is so buggy and crashy?

I checked blabbermouth.net and Flash is working fine for me. I've seen nothing but memory and performance improvements with Flash with every release. I have yet to find a page that didn't recognize Flash 10, but my Flash usage is fairly limited.
I just figured out that Adblock Plus was causing the crashes so I uninstalled it. Flash 10 RC seems pretty good at the moment.
