Adobe Flash update contains undisclosed bloatware - what to do?

Opening Firefox 6 beta I received the same bogus 'security update for Adobe Flash Player" to version 10.30138.5 that I got last week on Firefox 5.0.1 -- this file contains undisclosed, and nearly non-uninstallable malware, unwanted and unnecessary from either Google (The Google Toolbar) or McAfee (McAfee Security Plus) that is not mentioned before the file is downloaded, or after the file is downloaded and unpacked, but before installing.
Luckily my security software caught this hidden attempt to install unasked for software in the guise of a safety update from Adobe (perhaps there is a safety update in the compressed file, "install_flashplayer10_abcd.exe" - my security s/w showed two files, one hidden in there, with the warning, "This item appears to contains a malicious or potentially malicious malware" -- depending on the four letter file code before the ''.exe'' the security installation file contains "gtoolbar.exe" or the mcafee setup file as well as the flash player update.
I reported this matter to Adobe last week, never thinking Adobe would have consented, or even been paid to do this, but from the Internet chatter I found afterward, it seems either Adobe's safety flash player update was hijacked and corrupted illegally, or else Adobe was paid to hide and fail to disclose at any point, the existence of a second file, which most people characterize as qwapware.

23AUG11 -
First the Firefox 7beta has none of the display problems which I had with versions 5. and 6 beta - and which still happens with FF6x.
Glad to hear it is no longeer an issue with newest flavors of FF
I did complain to Adobe, and got no response -- and according to the Internet sites which popped up on my cursory search, so did a lot of other people who also got no response.
About the permission windows and buttons -- on this alleged security update from flash 10.3.131 or 134 to 10.3.138.5 there were no such windows, buttons or screens before downloading, after downloading, or after decompressing prior to the installation -- my security s/w blocked the dld the ''install_flash10_xyzb_cbgc.exe" files, regardless of the alpha characters to the immediate left of the ".exe" and showed two files inside the install file where there should only have been one.
As you noted this is apparently now only an Interenet Explorer issue -- somehow despite my security s/w blocking and removing the several versions of the Adobe "install_flash10*.exe" file, one got through and installed itself silently to Internet Explorer 8.
Didn't discover it until much later, and had to go to "Add/Remove Software" applet in the control panel - the normal 'disable' or 'uninstall' choices from the browser were not even available.
This week I've seen a couple of Adobe Flash Player updates announce themselves, attempting to get permission to update the flash player or the flash player plugin, e.g. for Firefox 6x, but now I scan all such files before using them,no matter if the security of the Sugar Plum Fairy is alleged to be at risk -- any files which contain multiple files within them before unpacking to setup are simply deleted or quarantined, and removed from the system..
I thought the display problems with FF5x and 6 beta were due to Java console incompatibilities, or something related I was just too close to see, but with Firefox 7 beta working so well, I've had to discard that possible solution.
Has anyone heard how much Adobe was paid by Google and McAfee to do this, or are they maybe claiming the ''install_flash10_*.exe" files were hijacked and the google toolbar or mcAfee Security plus files injected into them (which is how a biological virus attacks a potential host/victim organism?
Thanks for your time and thougnts about the problems I was having.
Don't know quite what to do about Adobe -- I've been using their commercial and free products, teaching them and teaching using them for nearly 20 years and I don't remember an issue like this coming up before.
With appreciation, greentech70

  • Adobe Flash Update infected Firefox with tons of viruses. Help!

I got with one of those annoying fake Adobe Flash Updates, and unfortunately fell for it and installed it, which has infected Firefox (and Chrome, and IE, for that matter) with tons of viruses that I CANNOT get rid of. I'm on a Windows 7 PC.
    Basically, what they do:
    - Adds "Enhanced Text" everywhere (text is underlined and leads to an ad)
    - Adds unwanted banners on sites
    - Frequent pop-ups
    - Redirects my searches (Google is essentially unusable)
    - Can't log-in to certain sites (eBay)
The last two are really killing me and making the internet very hard to enjoy. I've run Malwarebytes several times (first a quick scan, then a full scan), as well as TDSSKiller. Both detected malware and deleted them, but nothing changed. As per the internet's advice, I've tried disabling all my extensions/plug-ins, but doing that didn't help either - many reference specific extensions that cause these problems, like "CCodec" or "ghostery" but nothing like that appears in my add-ons menu. I went into Programs and Features and uninstalled anything suspicious-looking (which somehow lead to half that list disappearing? All my programs are still there, but for whatever reason that list shortened significantly), and still nothing.
I'm really at a loss here. None of my browsers are working properly and nothing I do seems to help.

Looks like you need to be locked and loaded for a virus to come, or just avoid it.
Can you try those scans in safe mode? Safe mode likely will prevent the malware from running at all during the safe mode session.

  • Adobe flash update fails

Flash update keeps asking me to quit safari. But Safari is not running
Anybody else with the same problem?

I feel your pain and have a solution that should work. I have been battling this for several weeks now, finally gave up, and wrapped up a call with an engineer an hour or so ago. Come to find out, regardless of what the O/S tells you in Activity Monitor about Safari, Dashboard, or both "not" running, these processes are in fact being called.
It seems that, at least in my case, on an up-to-date OS X / Safari combo, and with The Weather Channel widget installed, you will never get the newest Adobe Flash Player update to install. As soon as you remove The Weather Channel widget, the Adobe Flash update process will again work normally.
It makes absolutly no sense, but I and the engineer were able to reproduce the fix on my two systems and reproduce both the issue and the fix on his. I suspect this is a issue with The Weather Channel widget - or at least how it is interacting with the O/S and Safari. I suggest checking for any installed/active widgets that grab/stream any soft of content via the web, removing them, and re-running the Flash updater. I hope this helps.

  • When I installed the most recent Adobe Flash update (MacBook Pro, OSX), all my app tabs and recent sessions were cleared. Is there a fix for this?

This has happened a couple times when I installed updates to Firefox or Flash, but most recently: I am running Firefox 7.0.1 on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8. I installed the Adobe Flash update to Flash 11 and when I restarted Firefox, all my saved tabs were cleared, including the App tabs I'd pinned.

What's the URL of the page?
In the mean time clear the cache and reload the page.

  • Update to 3.6.6 clashed with adobe flash update

crash and notification that there are restored pages to be tried in restart of firefox. dialog screen that advises adobe DLM needs to be updated. I removed EVERYTHING adobe from the system, flashes, updater, before I found that there was a cryptic directory in C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\415ltrzs.default\extensions\ containing some adobe garbage. I removed all of that junk too. Now 3.6.6 opens OK. I followed update process for flash as listed on support page(s). Flash seems to work. I'm going to rename the sessionstore.js to the former file to see if I can get the sessions going again after 4 hours of wriggling on this hook. I just thought someone else whould know there could be difficulty with doing a firefox version update at the same time as a session recovery and perhaps an adobe flash update.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== update to 3.6.6 and was prompted to update adobe flash player

What do you specifically mean by "plug in collapse".

Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab.
Click Delete All under Browsing Data and Settings
    Not empty the Safari cache.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
    Now try a video.

  • Download Adobe Flash update on Mac with Yosemite

I am attempting to install the Adobe Flash update on my Mac Book Pro with Yosemite.  On every attempt the download bar stops at 30%.  I have uninstalled Adobe and reinstall it and I get the same result.  I would appreciate help in resolving this issue.

I just downloaded the installer... took all of 3 seconds to download.  It's only a 1.2MB file.
Check to see if it has downloaded it anyways.  Should see something like AdobeFlashPlayerInstaller_17au_Itrosxd_aaa_aih.dmg if it's there, quit Safari from the menu bar, run the installer.
If it's not there, try a different browser.  If that works, it's something in your Safari that's stopping it... could be an extension you have installed or adware.
You can also try a direct download from the Adobe site: (Under still having problems)

  • Adobe Flash update only saves file, how to activate it?

After receiving message from Firefox that I should download the Adobe Flash updater, I tried to complete this action. The only popup I get after I select this option is to Save the File or Cancel the action. After I save the file, nothing happens. How do I install Adobe Flash Update 10?

Make sure Firefox is closed. Then double-click on the Flash_setup file that you saved to start the installation.
