Adobe Garamond Expert?

I've used AGaramond for 20 years. All of a sudden in Mac Leopard (10.5.8) AGExpert no longer works. Adobe Garamond Regular, Alternate, Titling, etc all work fine, but the Expert fonts (small caps, old-style numbers, ligatures, etc) no longer work (Expert Regular, Semi or Bold). They come up blank. In Font Book, they are all noted as Active, but the characters are blank.
Is there a solution? I know that Adobe now sells all these fonts as a family instead of how I originally purchased them. Do I have to now re-purchase the font that I have imbedded in thousands of documents?? Will the newer "family" version of Adobe Garamond (that contains all the expert and alternate characters) work, or will I continue to have problems?
Thanks.
Expert still works in 10.4.11 in most programs including Quark XPress. However, even Adobe Garamond doesn't work in Apple's Pages . . . there, it's a conglomeration of regular and strange alternate glyphs.

I don't know when Apple started treating the encoding of expert fonts differently, but I don't think this is going to be treated as a bug anybody will be much interested in solving. PostScript Type 1 fonts are on their way out, and expert fonts in particular are all but dead.
The "modern" way of accessing "expert" glyphs is to reference the base glyph, plus formatting, and use an OpenType font. So instead of switching fonts you use Adobe Garamond Pro for the whole thing, and format small caps as small caps, and the application and the font take care of it. Same for say the ffi ligature. This has some real advantages, because the underlying text for "office" with an ffi ligature is still "office" instead of "oWce" which is kinda obviously better for search, spell check, or changing fonts.
Adobe has been selling and bundling Adobe Garamond Pro for about a decade now. Its special alternate glyphs work very nicely in InDesign, Pages and QuarkXPress.

  • Adobe Garamond Expert no longer working?

Running OS X 10.5.7 on a MacBook Pro ("Late 2007").
"A while ago" (don't know exactly when), I used to be able to use Adobe Garamond Expert (Type 1) font on my Mac.  Now - not working.  Adobe Garamond is working.  In Font Book.app, I can get previews of AG, but not AGE (AGE does appear in the font list).  I have the fonts and font suitcase installed in /Library/Fonts/.  I thought the suitcase or a font file might be corrupted, but when browsing my font CD, I get the same results in the Finder. When trying to use a document containing AGE in Word 2008, I get blank glyphs.
Another data point I just tried - I imported the Word doc into AI CS3, and AGE works fine in here (I guess the CS apps are using their own font engine?).
Is this a known problem?  Anyone else able to use AGE in Leopard?  Thanks for any assistance.

I guess this is an Apple bug - it is now "fixed" in Snow Leopard (10.6).  Love having to pay for those bug fixes.

    Thank you for your service.
I was most disappointed to find, however, that the letters I really wanted (Adobe Garamond Alternate Caps) is not in this collection and indeed, one now has to use another fancy designing program to construct those letters. I can’t afford to buy Photoshop just to construct two special capital letters. I’ve used the B and M in my logo for Balquhidder Music for years - but from jpgs - and I was hoping to have more flexibility in the future. I spent $169 to make sure I am in compliance. But I didn’t get anything of use to me.
I can’t understand why those Alternate Caps are not part of this - or any other package. I thought Adobe was capable of amazing things.
I assume I am whistling in the dark. So have a nice day.

Actually, when Adobe moved from Type 1 fonts to OpenType CFF fonts, all the so-called “expert typefaces” were consolidated into the base fonts. In other words Adobe Garamond Pro Regular not only has the Western Latin characters of the original Type 1 version of Adobe Garamond, but also has alternate Latin capitals (with titling, titling floating accents, and stylistic alternates), alternate Latin lowercase (swash and superiors), Latin small capitals (alphabetic and floating accents), ligatures, multiple numeric forms (including lining tabular, lining proportional, oldstyle tabular, oldstyle proportional, superscripts, scientific inferior, numerator, denominator forms, fractions, mathematical operators, etc.) plus a raft of other special symbols.
OpenType fonts are Unicode-based and allow for more than the 256 characters in Type 1 fonts which required multiple typefaces all with mappings to a standard keyboard to accommodate all these glyphs.
Thus, hopefully your disappointment will turn to joy.
To assist you in understanding OpenType fonts and to show you what is in the current Adobe Garamond fonts, I have attached a few PDF files for your perusal.
Let us know if you have any questions.

  • Where are Adobe Garamond Pro small caps?

I have Adobe Garamond Pro installed on my Mac which is said to include small caps and old style figures but they do not show up in the font menu option. I also have the older Adobe Garamond package which includes all experts characters and small caps / old style figures etc. These options show up as expected in the font option menu. So what's the deal with Garamond Pro?
The reason I need Garamond pro is it's Open Type which is the format I need (outside Illustrator).

Answer: Found the character option menu where the small caps are hidden.

  • Problems viewing Adobe Garamond Pro font

I am using InDesign to do a document. I has Adobe Garamond Pro font. I save the file fine and turn it into a PDF. The file is read fine with Adobe Reader, no errors.
My client saves the file and makes some small edits to the text using Adobe Acrobat.
When we open the file again in Adobe Reader we continue to get the following message.
"Cannot extract the embedded font 'TEZDIL+AGaromondPro-Regular'. Some characters may not display or print corrrectly."
Any ideas how to resolve this?
    Thanks.

The fonts are embedded in the customers final PDF, see below.
Just to recap. The fonts are embedded in my origional PDF. I (and the customer) use Acrobat to delete text (no error message), but when I add text and then open the PDF in A-Reader then I get the previously mentioned error.

  • Adobe Certified Expert Photoshop

I like to pass the Adobe Certified Expert exam for Photoshop. Is it possible to examin in german language?
Kann man die Prüfung zum Adobe Certified Expert auch in deutscher Sprache ablegen?
    Thanks for help!

    Way to go Bill!
jcmwork  we had a very unhappy poster here a while back who had paid a bunch of dollars to take the ACE Photoshop exam, and was angry at what he considered a high percentage of irrelevant questions.  So my ironic quiz above was stretching the point a wee bit, but you could be very proficient indeed, and still fail miserably.
If you want to sell yourself as a Photoshop user, perhaps putting your very best work on Behance would be a good way to go.  It sure would be cheaper.
    Anyway...

  • Adobe Garamond Pro [Regular] no longer recognized CS2

For months I have been working on hundreds of documents using Adobe Garamond Pro Regular OpenType font with no problems. Today I was copying some text out of an old Quark document (in the Times font). After pasting it into Indesign CS2 I formatted the text with no problem. I scrolled the page and instantly all the text turned pink, and unreadable because all the characters were overlapping each other. Also the font face display changed from "regular" to "[regular]" with the brackets around it, indicating that the Adobe Garamond Pro font face for regular was missing.
Now when I open a document that was fine last week, it also can't see the regular face of Adobe Garmond Pro. Everything is pink.
According to fontbook (OS X 10.5.4) the entire font is good. Other applications on this computer can recognize and display the font face properly. Just in case, I removed it from font book and copied in the same version of the font that I downloaded when I purchased it. No luck.
I've deleted the indesign preferences, no luck.
I've downloaded linotype fontexplorerX to clean the mac's font caches, no luck.
Has anyone else had this problem? Are there other preferences or caches that i can try deleting to get indesign to recognize this font? It's so weird because it all worked for months up until today, and I have not changed or installed anything new.
I would just swap the font for the old postscript version of Adobe Garamond, but the files are full of fractions and I need the opentype version for those.
Thanks in advance for any help, I am losing money here until I can fix this.

Yes, I am not sure why Vinay's response was a PM. Agreed it would have been helpful to post publicly.  All I did was uninstall Premiere Pro CC 2014, clicked yes for the option to remove preferences also, then immediately re-install.
    Here is Vinay's message:
    Hi Brian,
We have noticed this issue recently on 10.10.2 and we are trying to find the possible cause and as per my information this issue might arise due to licensing issues. So, might be in the OS upgrade process the licensing files are corrupted but right now I cannot comment on it. Please follow the step of Clean un-installation of Adobe products and the re-install them again.
Please uninstall all the Adobe applications manually from Applications folder one by one. Once done go to below locations and delete the specific files.
~ Files / Folders ~ Click on Go menu in finder and select Go to Folders option to type these location and click go to Navigate

/Applications/.AdobePatchFiles (hidden, use Go > Go to Folder command)

Once the locations are cleaned. Please re-install Premier Pro CC 2014 only to check if it works fine. Once checked you can install all the applications again.
Please PM me once it is resolved.

  • Adobe Garamond Pro in Word?

I would like to download the font Adobe Garamond Pro, but don't know if it will work in Microsoft Word. I have a Windows Xp OS and Word 2010.

    Hi,
Adobe Garamond Pro will work in MS Word, just like any OpenType font.
However, some of the OpenType features in the font might not be supported in Word.
To assure optimal spacing, be sure to enable the built-in kerning in the dialog box Format→Font→Character Spacing.

  • How will the Adobe Certified Expert program be managed with the shift to Creative Cloud?

I am presently studying to certify as an Adobe Certified Expert/Adobe Certified Instructor in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. My studying has been based upon the CS6 versions.
How will the ACE program work once we switch to CC? Should I wait for more changes to the program before taking my exams?
    Thank you!

    Hi Dreia, denniR,
We will offer CC exams and keep the existing CS6 exams available while Adobe continues to sell and support our Creative Suite 6 product line. Creative Suite 5 exams will be retired as the new CC offerings are released.
I know there are a lot of questions that will come up as our ACEs begin to work with CC and prep for the new certifications. To coordinate with the CC certifications, the exams will now be based on time periods. Meaning your certification will be valid for a pre-specific length of time and  will be required to recertify to maintain the CC product certifications. We will begin posting the specifics around the timeframes, policies, etc. in advance of the CC exam launches. Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] with questions and comments.
    Thanks,
    Tiffany
