Adobe Illustrator is showing CMYK in spot color document

Hi,
I created a PDF using Adobe Illustrator CS4, and although I am only using 2 spot colors, both, Illustrator and Acrobat are showing CMYK plates in the Separations Preview and Output Preview. When I turn off the Spot plates, there is nothing in the document. Could you please help me figure out why is this happenning?
Thanks

Every file has CMYK plates in Illustrator or Acrobat. I think you are over-thinking things.
The important issue is:
Are there any items actually on the plates??
Just because there are plates, does not mean those plates contain artwork. Both Illustrator and Acrobat Pro will always indicate CMYK plates, but if there is no CMYK data, they won't print.

Acrobat will always show the CMYK framework - even if there's no CMYK in there. You'll also notice that if the file contained RGB, calRGB, LAB etc - it also shows in the Output Preview as CMYK since it's in simulation mode (enough of that for now)!
You might want to use the SHOW feature in Output Preview or even use a preflight profile to double check ...

  • CMYK layers showing up when spot color illos placed in InDesign CS3

When I place an Illustrator CS3 (13.0.2) illustration into InDesign CS3 (5.0.3), Preflight tells me that CMYK colors are being used, even though the imported illustration has only 2 Pantone spot colors matching those used in the InDesign document (the 2 spot colors show up in Preflight as well). I double-checked to make sure they were spot colors, not CMYK. When I go to Separations Preview, my 2 spot color show up but nothing shows on the CMYK layers. I deleted all unused color swatches in my InDesign file (and the Illustrator file), and when I delete the illustration Preflight just shows the 2 PMS spot color that I'm using in the document. I'm using Mac OS 10.5.4 on a brand-new Quad-Core Xeon, if that matters.
I've tried saving the illustration as both AI and EPS, and using CMYK and RGB color modes. I deleted all unused color swatches from both Illustrator and InDesign. For another test, I created a fresh Illustrator file that just had a box in 1 spot color and placed it in a fresh InDesign file, and again Preflight said that CMYK was being used. Besides the usual work-around of telling my service bureau to not output the CMYK film, does anyone have any idea of how to correct this? I've encountered it several times. (BTW, my service bureau didn't know what the problem is).
This is my first visit and post here, so if I have violated some forum etiquette, please forgive me.

  • CMYK to spot color

how can i change one part of a file that has been created in cmyk to spot color without changing the rest of the cmyk art?

Still too short. An informative description is required.
In other words, please describe as detailed as possible what you want to do. Step by step, so one at least can understand it.

  • Converting CMYK to Spot Color (InDesign/Illustrator)

I have come across a client that have sent files built in process or CMYK.  We want to make it a 2 color job (2 spot colors) but they have not chosen colors.  What is the most effective way to determine the spot color that matches the CMYK procees within InDesign/Ilustrator.  If it easier to do on one of the 2 programs I am completely open to using either.

You can do it with Photoshop. Click the Foreground color picker, enter the CMYK values, choose Color Libraries, select the Pantone book you want to reference, and the closest ink will be displayed. Keep in mind that the appearance of CMYK depends on the document's color profile or the Color Settings' CMYK Working space if nothing is open. So, for example US Sheetfed Coated will likely return a different Pantone color than US SWOP Coated.

  • How can I place a transparent psd into Illustrator CS4 without effecting my spot colors?

So, I'm very naive about printing processes and am working with an online book building company. I've asked them how I need to fix this, but don't expect great advice from their design team.
When saving in Illustrator, I've been receiving the error:
"When spot colors are used with transparency, changing them to process colors outside of illustrator can generate unexpected results."
This effected the printing because it left a halo in the shape of the placed transparent .psd. So I need to know how to flatten the transparent psd or something in order to not have it effect the colors below it.
    Thanks!

Thanks Monika and John. I've been working in Spot colors simply because my client has limited my palette for the screen printing we've been doing on ceramics in the past. Now we want this book to match the colors on the ceramics. But if Pantone bridge back to CMYK would work, I'll do it. I have been saving to PDF by making a combined pdf directly from the .ai folder. My links are all embedded.
Is there a way to convert all the colors in the document to CMYK at once? Otherwise I'm looking at a very long week.

  • Black areas in Adobe Illustrator files show up gray in Keynote

When I bring an Illustrator file into Keynote, parts of the image that are 100% black in the illustrator file show up as about an 80% gray when inserted into a Keynote slide. Is there a workaround or a fix for this? Using the instant alpha in Keynote to remove the black from the image doesn't produce acceptable results.

Make sure the illustrator document that contains your image is set to RGB color mode. You can change this by going to File | Document Color Mode | RGB
Also, make sure that your color panel is set to RGB mode (you can change this by clicking on the flyout menu, you should see the 3 RGB slides, not 4 CMYK). Then select your image and apply black (R=0, G=0, B=0). Now if you copy and paste into keynote it should show up as true black.

  • Color separation CMYK and SPOT Color

    Hi,
I am new to the Acrobat SDK and I need to write a plugin for separating the colors (CMYK and Spot)
from a PDF file.  I Believe I need to use the Acro_Color library classes for doing this. Can you please
point me some sample code fragments to achieve how to separate these colors and generate a separate
    PDF file for each color.
    Kindly help me in this.
    Thanks in advance..
    Thanks
    sabdul

Do you actually need to do true separations, where each page of the new
PDF is a separate "plate" OR just simple separations of objects?
If the latter, then just walk through the objects (PDEdit APIs) and copy
    them from one to another.
If the former, there are a variety of methods - some simpler than other.
Depends a LOT on your specific requirements with respect to PDF levels,
standards compliance, etc.  You will probably need to talk to some people
in the print production industry to better understand the specific
    requirements.

Saving this document in Freehand FH9 takes about 0,001 seconds even with more photos.
    On the same PC!
I want migrate from Freehand tot Illustrator CS6, but not with such a slow saving proces!
I hope my settigs are wrong. I want work in Illustrator with many photo's also even with illustrations, it's a very and great program, but on this moment to slow.

  • Leopard doesn't recognize Adobe Illustrator version correctly

This is strange. It doesn't affect how the app works, but it bugs me. When viewing the app in my Applications folder, Adobe Illustrator CS5 shows version 399......when it is actually 15.0.1. The other apps (InDesign, Photoshop etc) all show the correct version. I contacted Adobe and THEY said it's an OS problem.
    Any clues or suggestions??

Yes you can change this by control click on your app in App folder. Click on *Show Package Content*, open Contents Folder and there in one of those folders (Resources?-->English.lproj?) contains a plist.string file with the version number, you can edit this to read whatever you want in your application summary of the finder window.
    Hope this solves your problem

  • Adobe Illustrator save as PDF

I'm not exactly sure where my new problem lies. I'm trying to save out single page PDFs from an Illustrator CS4 document with multiple artboards. Each artboard should become a PDF. I can get a multi page PDF, but when it saves single page files, I get white PDFs with error messages on them (I think it is saving .ai files with a .pdf extension).
this is where I am now (simplified, of course):
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
set docName to name of current document
    set itemNumber to 1
tell application "Finder" to set fileLoc to path to desktop as string
set pageCount to (count artboards in document docName)
    tell current document
    set allPlacedItems to placed items
repeat with h from 1 to (count of allPlacedItems)
set thisPlacedItem to item h of allPlacedItems
    tell thisPlacedItem to embed
    end repeat
    set allTextItems to text frames
repeat with j from 1 to (count of allTextItems)
set thisTextItem to item j of allTextItems
tell thisTextItem to convert to paths
    end repeat
    end tell
repeat with i from 1 to pageCount
    set pdfSaveOptions to {class:PDF save options, pdfXstandard:PDFX None, compatibility:Acrobat 6, preserve editability:false, generate thumbnails:false, optimization:false, acrobat layers:false, artboard range:i, view pdf:false, color downsampling:0, color resample:nodownsample, color compression:none, grayscale downsampling:0, grayscale resample:nodownsample, grayscale compression:none, monochrome downsampling:0, monochrome resample:nodownsample, monochrome compression:none, compress art:false, trim marks:false, registration marks:false, color bars:false, page info:false, page marks style:Roman, trim mark weight:trimmarkweight025, offset:6.0, bleed link:true, bleed offset:{0, 0, 0, 0}, color conversion id:none, color destination id:none, color profile id:include all profiles, trapped:false, font subset threshold:50.0}
set pdfName to docName & "TEST" & itemNumber & ".pdf"
set destFile to (fileLoc & pdfName) as string
save document 1 in file destFile as pdf with options pdfSaveOptions
set itemNumber to (itemNumber + 1)
    end repeat
    close current document without saving
    end tell

    Hi Stephen,
The problem is that the input for the page range is text (even if it is just one number). You're trying to put in a Number (the i you get from the loop). You'll need to convert the number to a string, probably by using the "as text" command.
What I use is (simplified): first check for multiple art boards (and set the range as text), if there is only one set the multiple artboards option to false, else set the page range. You don't have to build a loop to export each artboard seperately.
    tell document 1
if (count of artboards) > 1 then
set pagina_bereik to "1-" & ((count of artboards) as text)
    else
    set pagina_bereik to "1"
    end if
    end tell
    if pagina_bereik = "1" then
    save document 1 in file DestFIle as eps with options {class:EPS save options, preview:color TIFF, embed all fonts:true, embed linked files:true, include document thumbnails:true, PostScript:level 2, save multiple artboards:false}
    else
    save document 1 in file DestFIle as eps with options {class:EPS save options, preview:color TIFF, embed all fonts:true, embed linked files:true, include document thumbnails:true, PostScript:level 2, save multiple artboards:true, artboard range:pagina_bereik}
    end if
    Hope this helps,
    Ton

  • Finder acting weird lately for certain features (Bluetooth, Adobe illustrator etc.)

    Hi Everyone,
I have recently come across a new problem with my macbook pro.
While working with certain applications the finder is acting weird.
Adobe Illustrator - On trying to place a certain document from the desktop onto the art board on my AI file I tried to go the traditional way of placinf it by opening file > clicking on place > (finder pops open). Now, as soon as it came up it took just about 2 seconds for it to disappear. And it has been happening continuosly since then.
Bluetooh - to transfer some files from bluetooth on mac to my cellphone I chose the option: Send files to device...
Same thing happened again. Finder popped open and vanished in no time. Only this time I was completely unable to open it again at all.
The finder works perfectly everywhere else till now (atleast nothing wrong yet) but this is worrying me a bit as I have been reading about certain news of OS Mavericks being attacked by some flashback virus.
I would be grateful If anyone could help me with this.
    Thankyou,
    John Tushar

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.BluetoothFileExchange.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.
Since I don't use Adobe Illustrator, I don't know which .plist might be causing the problem. You could try doing the above with all Adobe Illustrator .plists.

  • Acrobat Preview mode doesn't show PMS spot colors

Out of the blue, the preview mode in Acrobat 9 is showing PMS spot colors as black, CMYK colors show up fine. The actual pdf itself is fine. This happens when I make pdfs "High Quality" or "Press Quality" from Indesign 6. Curiously, it does not happen when I make a "Smallest File". However when I attach these pdfs to email, the spot colors appear black.
I've been using 9 for a long time and I've been using Indesign 6 for a few months now. I'm on a Mac Pro, OSX 10.6.8. I can't figure out if there is something that was unchecked or checked that is causing this problem to come up seemingly out of nowhere.
    Any advice is much appreciated,
    Thanks!

It was correct for Adobe to use the Lab alternate color space for display of Pantone spot colors. Why? Two reasons:
    (1)     InDesign and Illustrator are now consistent with Photoshop's behaviour with non-process color channels. This interoperability issue has been complained about for years.
    (2)     When one referred to the CMYK alternate color space values of Pantone colors, the question naturally comes up as to which CMYK color space those deviceCMYK values represent. Are those values for SWOP or Gracol or what? According to what Pantone told me personally years ago, they were SWOP, but not so-labelled. Thus, unless your output CMYK color space is SWOP, use of those CMYK colors is simply wrong!!! Using Lab alternate colors will allow whatever renders those spot colors in either RGB or CMYK to properly render them in the actual final color space!
Unfortunately, there is nothing that Adobe can do to cause Apple's preview product to properly display these colors. By the way, this problem also afflicts the built-in PDF viewer in the iOS products as well as MacOS X. Fortunately, under MacOS, you can easily download and install the free Adobe Reader and have it do all the PDF display in lieu of Apple's preview. Although we do have Adobe Reader available for iOS, Apple does not let us replace preview in iOS for PDF preview. You must view in preview and send the file to Adobe Reader.
Of course, if enough Apple users complained to Apple management about the numerous anomalies of its preview program, maybe after all these years, they might actually fix it to properly handle Lab colors (as well as transparency).
