Adobe InDesign CC Interactive PDFs

Our inhouse design department has been using CC for about two weeks now. I'm trying to use the animation features in InDesign and then export the PDF with the animations working and then upload that PDF to our website.
The PDF exports correctly and the animations work properly when viewing in Adobe Acrobat Pro, but once uploaded to the website via our FTP, the animations are lost and there's nothing I can do to get them to work.  It just appears as a static image.
I've been looking around the forums for some answers and can't seem to get a good answer on this.
What am I doing wrong, any help would be appreciated.  If possible, I'm needing to avoid anything that involves Flash as the animations need to be viewed on iPads.  Originally I thought I would place animated GIFs into InDesign and export, but that doesn't seem to work either. I'm pulling my hair out as honestly, a lot of this is very foreign to me.
Thanks

@Katrina – no chance here. Animations in InDesign are directly tied with the Flash ecosystem.
You have to think in HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript to accomplish what you like.
Look, if "in5" is something for you:

Don't know, if they are ready for InDesign CC…

  • InDesign: Creating interactive PDFs with Page Turn and Flash animations | CSInsider | Design | Adobe TV

This episode gives an answer to a question Rufus hears very frequently: "Can I have page turns and animations created in Adobe InDesign in a PDF?" - The answer is yes. Find out how.
    http://adobe.ly/wmHCbl

Not an expert, but would think you still get 508 compliance by the normal PDF reader controls  -- the page curls are visual extras only.
I understand these 'techniques' perfectly -- but they sure seem awkward.
    - why doesn't InDesign properly emit the combination page turner PDF in one step?
    - why doesnt InDesign show the actual background of the embedded Flash animation as it will be, and why doesn't it allow you to set background transparency right there in InDesign, again showing you what the result will be?
I hope this is done in such a straightforward and clear way, in InDesign CS6.

  • InDesign - exporting interactive pdf with page curls issues

I followed a Rufus Deuchler adobe tv video called "InDesign: creating interactive pdfs with page turn and flash animations"  and I was able to create an Interactive Pdf document with page culrs but it is limited to only my mac Book Air as when I sent it as an attachment (pdf) it did not work on any other PC or mac.
Have  I missed the point or have I not done something as I thought the video mentioned that any adobe reader could view the interactive pdf (ie on other PCs or tablets)?
    Thanks
    David

Only Adobe Acrobat or Reader can show those PDFs (and many others) correctly. Are you sure that the PDF was opened in one of these 2 applications and not in Apple Preview or Ghostviewer or something else?
Only Adobe Reader 9 and X and Acrobat 9 and X can show PDFs with Flash content correctly. If you have an older version, let us say Version 8 or older, you are not able to see Flash content at all. If you have a newer version, that is Reader XI or Acrobat XI you need additional Adobe Flash player have installed on that computer and allow access to your PDFs. Can you check, if these substantial requirement are fulfilled?

  • When will Adobe Reader support interactive PDF elements on iOS?

When will Adobe Reader support interactive PDF elements on iOS? I don't want to hear the line that Apple won't allow Flash. Adobe needs to get a workaround PRONTO! We need detection of simple buttons and support for Mp4 and f4v - as exported inline by inDesign when creating PDFs.

Pat Willener, Thank you for your message. I have done what you suggest. I could have sworn I started this topic in the general Adobe Reader discussion. So I have also placed a copy back where I thought I first had it so it can be found by other Windows users who, like me, are creating PDF files because they are meant to comply with an international cross-platform standard and not simply be the domain of one platform over the other.
    *******Enhancement / FMR*********
Brief title for your desired feature: Support for interactive PDFs
How would you like the feature to work? When I add a transparent frame containing a  basic Adobe Media encoded mp4 or f4v video, export to interactive PDF from Adobe InDesign, I want the PDF and its interactive videos to work on iPads. See an example file here: ***EXAMPLE PROVIDED***  Click the lefthand top and bottom corners to bring up interactive video elements which should open in floating window, maximized, then have an exit button to close and continue reading the PDF. Of course, this does not function under Adobe Reader for iOS. You also need to attend to audio files embedded in the same way and allow an exit button to close the audio window so the reader can continue reading the PDF on Windows.
Why is this feature important to you? I create eReaders for schools across the whole country and they are taking up iPads at an unprecedented rate. If Adobe do not produce a solution for interactive PDFs on iOS then I will no longer use InDesign, Acrobat, Adobe Media Encoder or Photoshop to create works in the future. You're looking at a massive education market that will leave Adobe behind if this is not acted upon very very soon. For some publishers it's already too late and they have moved to app based creation tools.

  • Buttons not working - InDesign (CS4) Interactive Pdf

I've been creating an interactive pdf document for a client over the last few months.
Initially, this was going to be a 70 page document, with limited interactivity (some forwards and back buttons etc.).
Now, this has grown and is a 220 page document, with rollover buttons that reveal other buttons layered on top of each other, various menus to navigate back and forth through the document, masses of content, images, bookmarks etc! And, I'm experiencing problems with buttons/ links now working when the pdf is exported.
Some of the buttons that don't work on exporting pdf, in the inDesign file appear to be set up in the correct way, I have even rebuilt some of them still with no luck on exporting them.
Is the document now too big and too complex to work??
If anyone at Adobe could give me some of their expert advice that would be much appreciated as myself and colleagues are now out of ideas!
    Many thanks!

I've been having experiencing a similar problem after I chose to create a digital presentation with InDesign instead of PowerPoint.
It's basically a showcase of products with several non-linear navigation buttons (for which I use buttons, bookmarks and the "Go to Destination" option).
There are several videos, so I thought that the interactive PDF container would be the best choice for a single file, since this presentation is to be distributed to many sales representatives.
Everything was fine until there were about 100 "pages" (slides). After this point, the "Go to Destination" buttons stopped working (although the mouse cursor indeed changes to a pointing hand). Only the "Go to next page" buttons do work, and I have already tried to export the PDF in several ways. I've been really thrilled by what kinds of restrictions does an interactive PDF have.
Have you found any solutions to this matter? I think I have pushed this functionality over its limits...

  • InDesign CS5 interactive PDF export not functioning

Hey guys, I have been starting to work with some interactive designs within InDesign CS5, mainly animations (menu fly out on mouse over, moving object on page load) . However each time I have exported my work as an interactive PDF, nothing functions, it all appears as static images. I have tried viewing in Acrobat XI, Adobe Reader, Safari.. all with the same result.
I have used the preview function to review that animation is working properly before exporting and every works flawless, it just doesn't export any of this. I have tried editing a new PDF preset and exporting that way. I have tried both "Interactive" and "Interactive for PDF" modes as well, in case that matters. I have had absolutely no luck and hope someone can find something I must have missed? Thanks for the help on this!

Animations are not supported natively in PDF files... Preview shows you just a Flash/SWF preview, not PDF preview.
Only way to use animations in PDF files is to create Flash/SWF file which includes animation(s), place that SWF to InDesign and export Interactive PDF after that.
And it´s just a work-around, not very good one IMO.... I don´t believe you can do animated menus with that technique....

  • Indesign CS5 Interactive PDF not really an Interactive PDF?

I have created an online Interactive SWF file using Indesign for a corporate Newsletter and it works fine.
However, when asked if I could produce a PDF version I thought "sure, just convert it to an Interactive PDF!"
I was shocked to find that it does not work and that basically I had to rip the whole thing apart and rebuild it to make it a PDF, as creating hyperlinks instead of button actions to me is not an Interative PDF, which is all it seems to infer.
All of the Object States had to be dismantled and placed on seperate pages.
None of the Buttons created to go to different pages worked anymore, I had to remove the button states from the objects and convert them using Hyperlinks and Hyperlink Destinations, a lot of work.
Surely, since Adobe own Indesign and also own Acrobat it would be possible to convert an Indesign Project to PDF and have the buttons work correctly?
Also, none of the animations work, these had to be scrapped.
Any plans for a future release to rectify this and the reduce workflow?

If you spent any time looking at these features you would have seen that they are clearly SWF only.
The workaround for this is to export the SWF and place it in a PDF.

  • InDesign CC interactive PDF hyperlink issue on PC

Exporting as an interactive PDF using links to open another PDF file and the link works fine on a MAC not a PC? Any idea how to get it to work on a PC?

The links to open PDF files from within a PDF can be edited and re-linked to the proper folder in Adobe Acrobat version XI after the PDF has been exported out of InDesign CC. In the Tools panel, click Add or Edit Link, double click the link to open up Link Properties and then in the Actions tab, delete the action that is currently there. Then in the drop down for selection Action, choose Open a file and add it into the actions list selecting the sub folder and file that you want to open, then save the PDF.
It seems like this method of editing the link through Adobe Acrobat creates an absolute path that's recognizable on both Mac and PC. The link will work as long as your main PDF and all linking sub folders and files are together in the same root location.

  • Hyperlink target Indesign CC Interactive PDF

    Hi,
We're working on an Interactive PDF but strangely enough we suddenly can't work with hyperlink targets anymore. This means we can't make certain objects a hyperlink target so we can't navigate
through the document as we were used to. Any idea of how this is possible and what we can do about it?
    Kind regards,
    David

I usually start by creating my Hyperlink Destinations by choosing New Hyperlink Destination from the Hyperlinks panel menu.
Then I create my hyperlink. In this case I started with a text frame:
I chose to link to a Shared Destination (although you don't have to):
You can test this in InDesign when the Hyperlink is selected:
When you test it in your PDF, be sure choose File > Export > Adobe PDF (Interactive) so the hyperlinks will be properly exported.

  • Buttons don't work: InDesign CS& interactive PDF

Hi, i'm creating an interactive PDF book in InDesign CS6, it's a simple plain text + images book
I added some buttons on the first page that work as a table of contents (each button redirects you to a diferent page).
And one at the bottom of the master page I'm using (so you can see it on every page of the document) that sends you back to that table of contents.
They are simple objects converted to buttons, with the option "go to destination" active and with a certain Hyperlink Destination asigned each.
The first time I exported the document they all worked perfectly, but then after I made some minor changes to the document and exported it again, they didn't work. The curious thing is that I have 2 more buttons at both sides of the page that have the "Go to next/previous page" that ARE working. So my guess is that it has something to do with the Destination option or the destinations themselves.
Here I explain how I did it:
    1. Went to the page I wanted the destination.
    2. Click on the Hyperlinks menu then "New Hyperlink Destination"
    3. Added its name and clicked OK.
    - Did the same with every page I wanted in my index -
    4. Went to the page designed to the table of contents.
    5. Created a text box with the Type Tool.
    6. Converted it to a button in the Buttons and Forms panel.
    7. Added a "Go to Destination" action to it.
    8. Selected its respective Hyperlink Destination i made before.
    - Did the same with every other button of the table of contents and that one at the bottom of the page that takes you to it -
    9. Exported the document as an (Interactive) PDF.
And that's it. The 2 buttons that have the "Go to Next/Previous page" action work, but the ones that have the "Go to Destination" action don't. There are no layers, there are no other objects stacking over them nor behind, just the buttons against the background.
I tried with Bookmarks instead of Hyperlink Destinations, but didn't work.
I tried making them Hyperlinks directly with the Right Click menu then, Interactive option, then "New Hyperlink" and selecting the page I wanted them to go, but hey didn't work either.
And to make a classic table of contents from the Layout menu, wouldn't make much difference because I still have that one button that takes you to that page where I have my table of contents, and it will be still not working.
Can anyone help me? Has anyone had the same problem?
    Thank you!

Exactly the same thing I am experiencing. Can someone please help?

  • InDesign CS6 interactive pdf problem

Hi, I've created an interactive pdf using InDesign CS6; document contains text fields and radio buttons. When exported the radio buttons flicker when you hover over them or click to make a selelction. Does anyone know how to prevent this? Many thanks

I have a hunch it could be an Acrobat/Reader limitation.
Set up a part of the form without the radio buttons but just use circles. Export a PDF and open in Acrobat. Use Acrobat's Form Field Recognition to turn the circles into radio buttons (or use Acrobat's form feature to create radio buttons with the same value).
    I doubt it's InDesign that's the problem.

  • InDesign CS3 Interactive PDF print question

I have created an InDesign document with interactive PDF elements, one of which is a layer with a button that covers the entire document size (11" x 8.5") and has a single page 11" x 8.5" PDF placed on the layer that is to be printed. This has been designated in the States palette / Button Options / General by selecting "Hidden but printable" in the "Visibility in PDF" dialog box. No Behaviours are added. This has worked beautifully.
My problem is that now my client wants to add a second page that will also print, and I can't seem to accomplish this. I have tried several things:
    – adding a second page to the original PDF placed on the layer under the button -- the second page does not print.
    – on the same layer, under the button placing a second, separate PDF of the new page directly under the originally placed PDF -- the second page does not print
    – adding a second layer just below the first, set up exactly the same as the original one described above with a PDF of the new page I want to print -- the second page does not print.
Is it possible to do what I want, and can anyone advise me? Thanks!

Carol, I did change a few things in the attached PDF that are different from the instructions that I first posted. After I re-read your post, you said that the image that you want the user to print would cover the entire page. In that case, you wouldn't need to have the second action of hiding the print images applied to the buttons for roll off. Those images are hidden when you click on the print image, and then you go back to the original state.
As for the sizes, the print images are the same size as the presentation portion of the PDF. The print images are hidden until a user would engage them. I have taken this approach one step further. In Acrobat, I have assigned an action for the button to bring up the image as well as engage the print dialog box. Then, once the printing is completed, the user returns to the original state of the presentation PDF, hiding the print image.
I have created this type of presentation for the scenario of having a user view a PDF if it were a slideshow (reverse type on dark background), but allowing the user to print from the PDF a page better suited for a laser printer (black type on white background).

  • Why do my images go blurry when I export from InDesign to interactive PDF?

I am trying to export an InDesign file to an interactive PDF, but my images are going blurry.
    Everything else is fine.
    Can anyone help?

In the export dialog options, please reset the jpeg quality and resolutions to higher levels, and see the output results have improved. But be prepared to accept heavy pdf file size.

  • When will Adobe Refine the Interactive PDF Audio Controller?

Whenever Reader plays interactive audio content, this dreadfully small or dreadfully large audio controller comes up (hard to understand how the size is respected via inDesign's tools), looking incredibly clunky and does not even have an exit button so that you can close the played audio file and continue to read the page!
When will this be fixed as an update to InDesign CS6 ? This feature should never have been allowed to be released in its current form. When a core feature fails to live up to its promise, then it's in breach of basic consumer laws where I live!

Pat Willener, thank you for your post but this is a forum for users like me to post about issues, some of which may be affecting other uses and some of which may be answered by other users.
If Adobe had any kind of interest in the purpose of these forums and the support of their product, if they were also pro-active, then they'd have someone over here acting upon deficiencies mentioned here, not the other way around. FGS, I'm not paid by Adobe to do their bidding, I pay them to provide me with a product that I believe I should have already got in return for my money, not a product with half-cocked features. I filed a feature request, as per your instructions weeks ago and Adobe have not replied.
From what I now know, Adobe is extremely deficient when it comes to after sales service and the company is gaining a very poor reputation because of that.
Which brings me back to what I asked, doesn't anyone from Adobe attend to these discussion threads? From my time at other forums, a company rep responds giving a full answer and timeline for a fix.
