Adobe LAB (#@$#@$) Colours

Hi
Has anyone found a practical way to get around the LAB to CMYK completely useless values? Also we use Kodak Preps 6.2.1 for impositions and it doesn't handle LAB colours, they just vanish?

Thanks for that, new to this, but if I need to list the software to which this is relevant, not sure the answer is in sight, we are commercial printer, so indesign, illustrator and Photoshop are our main suspects. Client picks colour from PANTONE color bridge coated as example and wants reflex blue but the job is in CMYK, lab color conversion is C100 M86.11 Y27.48 K8.94, this is far removed from the book color C100 M82 Y0 K2, so there is my question, is there a way get the LAB to convert correctly to match the book CMYK? Biggest issue is when using spot color logos/drawings which a client wants printed CMYK, is getting the values correct without having to go through their entire history of work and re enter the CMYK values for the spot colors manually? This will be a monumentus task? As for system??? Mac not that is should make a difference, and if it helps color profiled to FOGRAG39. Hope thats a bit more specific?

  • Creating a photo gallery like the China Gallery in Adobe Labs. How?

    I have photos in several categories (I'll use 2, "frank" and "wolfie" as examples here). What I'd like to do is build a photo gallery like the China Photo Gallery shown in the Adobe Labs site, where the user can switch between categories without going to a different page. Here's what I've done so far and how I'm stuck:
    I created a photo gallery with the instructions in the tutorial "Building a photo album with the Spry Framwork". I then inserted a Tabbed Panels widget for navigating between the categories.
    I set up an XML file as follows:
    /* frank category */
    <photo
    path = "001p.png"
    width = "467"
    height = "467"
    thumbpath = "001p.png"
    thumbwidth = "85"
    thumbheight = "85">
    </photo>
    /* wolfie category */
    <photo
    path = "001f.png"
    width = "467"
    height = "467"
    thumbpath = "001f.png"
    thumbwidth = "85"
    thumbheight = "85">
    </photo>
    To create the div holding the thumbnails for the "frank" category, I entered the following:
    <div class="thumbdiv" spry:region="dsGallery"><img src="thumbnails/frank/{@thumbpath}" spry:repeat="dsGallery" spry:setrow="dsGallery" class="thumbs" /></div>
    To create the div where the full size images will be displayed, I entered the following:
    <div class="mainpic" spry:detailregion="dsGallery"><img src="images/frank/{@path}" onload="MM_effectAppearFade(this, 1500, 0, 100, false)" /></div>
    Then, in the tabbed panel set for the "wolfie" category, I did the same thing, substituting "wolfie" for "frank". However, since there is only one xml file, spaceholders for all of the thumbnails appear in the thumbnail div for the frank category. I realize that I'll probably need to create a separate xml file for each category, but how do I set it up so the correct xml file is accessed when the link in the tab is clicked? Or am I approaching this all wrong?
    From reviewing the source for the China gallery, it appears that they set up links to different xml files instead of Tabbed Panels. How does that work? There are also some javascript files I can't find anywhere on Adobe's site.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    If you have seperate XML file but with the same basic structure then you can change the XML a Spry dataset refers to and regenerate the spry region without reloading the full page.
    So on my photo gallery page I can change the album the photos are shown from via the seturl sprydata function as below.  dsPhotos being my Spry dataset that points to the relevant XML dataset with my image references and captions etc.  My XML is actually dynamically generated from Picasa RSS feeds (and RSS feeds are XML) but the principle will be the same with your static XML.
    First I add an event listener for when someone clicks on an album (the li tag within my div with the id "albums" holds a photo and title for each album.)
    function Albums()
    var myalbums = Spry.$$("#albums li", "TabbedPanels1")
    var rows = dsAlbums.getData();
    var setListener = function( element, value )
      Spry.Utils.addEventListener( element, "click", function(){ showAlbum( value ); },false );
    for( var i = 0, length = myalbums.length; i < length; i++ )
      setListener( myalbums[i], i );
    Then this is the code which changes the photo album to be shown. (when the user clicks the relevant album)
    function showAlbum(i)
    pauseShow();
    pImage = 'No';
    var rows = dsAlbums.getData();
    var albumid = rows[i]["albumid"];
    var url = "xml/PicasaAphotoFeed.asp?albumid=" + albumid;
    dsPhotos.setURL(url);
    dsPhotos.loadData();
    var rowcount = dsAlbums.getRowCount() - 1;
    var nextalbum;
    var navnext;
    var n;
    The page is here www.thehmc.co.uk/photo5.html is you want to see it in context.
    In your case showAlbum would switch between Frank.xml or Wolfie.xml depending on how you decide to name your xml datasets.
    Regards
    Phil

  • Camera Raw RC 7.4 on Adobe Labs

    Adobe has released the RC version of ACR 7.4 at Adobe.labs.com.
    The Camera Raw 7.4 update includes support for many new cameras and lens profiles.
    Camera Raw 7.4 Release Candidate includes a correction to the demosaic algorithms for Fujifilm cameras with the X-Trans sensor.
    The following new cameras are now supported:
    Canon EOS 1D C
    Casio Exilim EX-ZR700
    Fujifilm X100s
    Fujifilm X20
    Hasselblad Lunar
    Leica M
    Nikon 1 V3
    Nikon 1 S1
    Pentax MX-1
    New Lens Profile Support
    Lens Name
    Lens Mount
    Canon 24-70 f/4L IS
    Canon
    Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO HSM
    Sony, Pentax
    Sigma APO MACRO 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM
    Sony
    Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM A012
    Canon, Sigma, Nikon
    Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM C013
    Canon, Sigma
    Fixed Issues
    The following issues have been fixed in Camera Raw 7.4 release candidate:
    The grayscale visualization associated with Noise Reduction Luminance was visible after mouse release.  This occurred when positive Clarity was present.
    The command/control + A “select all” keyboard shortcut did not select all photos.
    Modifying the brush size using the Right-click + Drag method did not increase or decrease the brush size by the desired amount.
    The crop overlay tool resized incorrectly when used in conjunction with the “Constrain to Crop” checkbox in the Lens Correction panel.
    Hovering the mouse over a local adjustment pin would turn off the desired mask.
    Horizontal artifacts occasionally appeared in DNG files.
    Improved interactive performance at intermediate zoom levels (e.g., 33% and 66%)

    Sorry this was my mistake.  Yes, we meant to say Nikon 1 J3.  And the Leica model that is newly supported in 7.4 RC and 4.4 RC is the Leica M (Typ 240).
    The M Monochrom has been supported since ACR 7.1 and LR 4.1 (last year).

  • How about a 'Text Layout Framwork' category on Adobe Labs Ideas in the Flex SDK section?

    I like 'Adobe Labs Ideas', it's far more accessible/inviting then "Adobe Bugs and Issues" (JIRA).
    Therefor I would like to suggest a new category 'Text Layout Framework' under the Flex SDK section or even it's own section (after all TLF isn't Flex only).

    Am I right, that this is a tricky question? No hints or attempts so far. Really no-one out there?
    I guess I am not the only one who would like to extend the Importer (Exporter) by new tags, FlowElement's and FlowLeafElement's.

    Not at all.  I like good tools, and from everything I read Bridge is marvelous.  I don't have anything against Bridge, I just don't need it.
    As a computer engineer, I use my computer for WAY more than just Photoshop.  As such, I do everything I can to have the operating system (via Windows Explorer) integrate things for me.
    For example, via right-click or double-click or drag and drop onto icons:
    I access my configuration management system from Explorer (Tortoise SubVersion).
    I do searches (grepWin) from Explorer.
    I compare things (Beyond Compare) from Explorer.
    I start Photoshop and other image tools on raw and processed image files I manage with Explorer.
    I start my development tools (Visual Studio and a host of utilities) from Explorer (e.g., double click .sln files).
    I access my web sites with Explorer (via WebDrive).
    I get file paths from Explorer (right click, Send to Clipboard as Name).
    I access office management apps from Explorer (e.g., double click .doc or .xls files).
    This is an abbreviated list.  Explorer can be a VERY powerful integrator, and is at the center of my computing world at a higher level.  So now you can start to imagine why I prefer Explorer for image work.

    Can you please verify if OOBE folder is present in Program Files\Commo

    Eric, it's been a few days since the release of LR 5.3 and ACR 5.3, and I cannot download ACR 5.3 via Help>Updates, as is recommended. LR was able to acknowledge that an update was available within hours of its availability, but my copy of CS4 Extended (as part of Production Premium) hasn't yet.
    Is there a delay in providing automatic updates through Help>Updates, or could there be a problem with my copy of CS4 Extended?
    I would appreciate any assistance given with this, as I prefer the automatic download process, compared to the additional steps necessary when downloading the installer.

  • Yet another bug in Photoshop CS3: Lab Colour Mode

    Using Photoshop CS3 Standard (english) on Windows XP SP2, I cannot switch to Lab colour mode. Or rather, I can, but the image will turn completely black. In the channels palette in Lab mode, there are four channels: L, a, b, and Lab. The three single channels obviously contain the correct data, and I can select each one and the display will show the correct greyscale representations of the L channel, the a channel, and the b channel. But it won't show the colour image of all channels combined, i. e. the Lab image; this will appear simply black instead.
    Fortunately, I still have Photoshop CS2 installed. So due to this and numerous other bugs (particularly the §@#!& printing) I am using Bridge 2.1 and ACR 4.1 but not Photoshop CS3. This application is just too buggy to get serious work done :(
    -- Olaf

    The exact same thing happened to me just 2 days ago. It was the first time I had ever tried LAB, in any version of PS, and all I got was the black box. I switched to my earlier version (PS7 in this case) and tried it, thinking that maybe my computer wouldn't support it for some reason, since it's several years old. PS7 displayed LAB just fine... I went back to CS3 (I had closed it down completely) and when it restarted - it LAB worked correctly, BUT all my preferences had been reset to default! So, I agree with the previous poster who commented that it may be a preferences thing. You should also check the color management settings in your earlier version & make sure the CS3 has the same settings. I have no idea if that made a difference or not, but I did notice that my CS3 didn't have the same color settings as PS7 did. Try resetting preferences to default, shutting down CS3 and restarting, and then check to see if CS3 will display LAB correctly.

  • Congrats Adobe Labs

    Just wanted to say congratulations to Adobe/Adobe Labs for
    the Panels...what a great workflow advantage.
    I'd be happy as a clam in sand just the way it is because of
    the efficiency it gives my process.
    Not to look at a gift horse in the mouth however, is there
    any way that parts of the commands/actions could be menued (for
    lack of a better term)
    For instance, my main panel is quite large and contains 6 or
    7 major ACTIONS. These are pretty complex, engaing several
    photoshop and third party tools. Normally in my action pallette, I
    can set this as one total action and decide what subsets I want to
    toggle on or off for a particular set of images.
    I can't do that with the panels so I broke these down into 6
    ACTIONS on the panel.
    It would be cool however to be able to select more than one
    of these on the panel at a time..say #1 #3 and #4.
    perhaps on another set of images I would need to select #1 #2
    and #6.
    More or less to be able to Batch my processes that are on my
    panel as actions or commands.
    Secondly....It would be cool if we could invoke the great
    Adobe Labs camera calibration presets.
    I know I can do this via Lightroom 2 and ACR but often in
    processing, we have to deal with JPEGs or TIFFS on a one-off and
    would not rather have to import these and then export to PSCS4ext.
    Also...they are great failsafe for color balance and color
    balance comparison when after processing an image late into the
    night we may have gone too far...especially with portraits.
    Just some ideas for Labs to consider....and again....great
    job on the panels.

    I am thrilled with Configurator.
    How soon can you also create a Configurator for InDesign and
    Illustrator?

  • Lightroom 3.2 Release Candidate Available on Adobe Labs

    This release includes camera support, bug fixes and new features.  Details here:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2010/08/lightroom-3-2-and-camera-raw-6-2-available -on-adobe-labs.html
    Regards,
    Tom Hogarty
    Lightroom, Camera Raw and DNG Product Manager

    Despite the fact that the bug list does not announce any of this, I'm very happy to report that LR3.2 RC seems to run quite a bit snappier in many ways. Local edits are still slower with an image that already had a lot of tweaks applied compared to applying them on a fresh image, but overall the performance seems to be much improved.
    Its still early days and I'll have to do some real work but so far it looks very promising. Thanks for the release candidate!
    The stuttery cursors of the spot removal and red-eye tool are gone as well. Nice touch. I now have an idea why it had been these two cursors that were different. They are the only ones which may need to change mode if the cursors are run over previous applications (i.e. there has to be a collision test with round shapes other than the handles). In my current testing I noticed that said cursors sometimes can become stuck completely and only move on after a slight pause. I think this is a new bug as I haven't seen it before. Hope it is not Lua garbage collecting. Moving the cursors around shouldn't really be a problem even if there are some collision tests to be performed.
    A bug I reported about the spot removal tool not working well in corners also appears to have been addressed.
    I've only done a very quick test so nothing is definitive but indeed looks promising.
    The only issue that might have gone worse is the jerkiness of scrolling through the grid mode with the scroll bar. It wasn't great before but I now seem to experience more frequent and longer pauses in updating the grid. Please, everyone compare the (on my system jerky) way the scrollbar moves the grid to grabbing the grid with the mouse (move the cursor on a line between images and it will turn into a hand). If you move the mouse while having grabbed the grid, the updates are smooth and allow visual tracking of the images while they move. The movement with the scrollbar is so jerky that I cannot visually track the images as they pass by.
    Note that scrolling with cursor keys is very fast without pauses but the movement isn't smooth (jumps with the image height) so again visual tracking is hard.
    I have an idea why the scrollbar is as decoupled from the grid movement as it is, but I hope that there is room for improvement. I'd be prepared the grab the grid even though that would mean precision manoeuvres with the mouse, but unfortunately, you don't really get far with this method.

  • Adobe InDesign API Navigator is available on Adobe labs

    Adobe InDesign CS5 API Navigator is available on Adobe labs web site. You can download for free.
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/indesign_apinavigator/
    If you are an InDesign C++ plug-in developer, you should definitely try this new tool.
    The InDesign API Navigator is a tool for InDesign C++ Plug-in developers. It works as an add-in for Visual Studio on Windows and as a plug-in for Xcode on Mac OS X. It helps developers get API information within the IDE directly, including Boss definitions, aggregating Bosses for interfaces, and ODFRC type definitions. It also adds syntax coloring for ODFRC files (.fr and .fh). It extends the debugger expression evaluator to understand some InDesign types, which allows the debugger to format some InDesign types nicely in the variables pane (Xcode) or watch window (Visual Studio) while debugging. In Visual Studio, it enables the IDE to browse InDesign C++ APIs.
    Try it and give your comments.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Have you an API Navigator version to Visual Studio 2010?

  • Flash Catalyst "Panini" Preview available at Adobe Labs

    I'm not sure how many of you have had time to keep up with what is going on at Adobe Max this year, but some of the keynote videos have demonstrated Flash Catalyst "Panini".  There is a preview download of the future version of Flash Catalyst available at the Adobe Labs site here:
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashcatalyst_panini/
    It's beta software, so all the usual caveats apply (you can learn more from the link above).  Apart from the advances made in Flash Catalyst "Panini", the most immediate pieces are that this preview version can co-exist with a Flash Catalyst CS5 install (so no need to uninstall Fc CS5 to try it) and that this particular preview build doesn't open Fc CS5 projects.
    Hopefully you find it to be an improvement and we welcome your feedback.
    --Nate
    Quality Engineer on Flash Catalyst

    I found a bit of information about serial numbers on the Panini download page:
    These downloads provide 30-day trial versions of Flash Catalyst "Panini"  for Mac OS and Windows. You can extend the preview release by entering a  valid Flash Catalyst CS5 serial number. If you own a copy of the  Creative Suite 5 editions of Design Premium, Web Premium, Production  Premium or Master Collection, you can also extend the use of Flash  Catalyst "Panini" by requesting an extension serial number.
    Though it looks like the extension serial number system isn't active until later this month.
