  • Framemaker's future

    Hi there.
I'm a Doc Lead for a large IT company.  I've been tasked w/ finding another tool/software to use for creating and maintaining a large (800 page) document (right now, they use Word, and it can't handle this file, which is basically a user's manual).   I was going to go w/ Framemaker, but I just heard today that it might be on the way out.  Is this true - Framemaker may not be supported by Adobe in the future?  Is InDesign a better option?
I'm a newbie on here, so any insight is greatly appreciated.  I think the big wigs want an answer soon, too (of COURSE they just gave it to me...)
    Thanks!!!

Like Mike, I've been hearing these "end of FrameMaker" rumours for more than 10 years now, so no need to worry. Indeed, I've seen RJ Jacquez, the Adobe evangelist, present FrameMaker 10 at the tekom tcworld2010 conference.
If you really want to "play it safe", you could convert your Word file to DITA XML topics. You can still edit and publish these with FrameMaker and, if you don't like FrameMaker for some reason (which I'd doubt), you could use a different editor without having to convert your files to some other binary format again. Moreover, since you work for a large IT company, other stakeholders may even like the fact that the content is in an XML format.
If you'd like to know more about DITA or if you'd like to see how your content would look like in DITA, feel free to send me your Word file and I'll create a small prototype for you.
    Kind regards

  • FrameMaker for the Mac End-of-Life (No more development)

From Dov Isaacs, and Adobe employee and all-round guru, to the Framers list (http://www.frameusers.com):
~ Adobe FrameMaker End-of-Life for Macintosh Platform ~
On April 21, 2004 Adobe will discontinue Adobe(r) FrameMaker(r) software for the Apple Macintosh operating system. Adobe FrameMaker 7.1 will continue to be available on Microsoft(r) Windows(r) and Sun(tm) Solaris(tm) platforms. Complimentary and fee-based technical support for FrameMaker for Macintosh will be available for approximately one year running through April 21, 2005.
    Frequently Asked Questions
    Q. Why is Adobe discontinuing Macintosh support for FrameMaker altogether?
    A. The decision to discontinue FrameMaker on the Macintosh operating systems was based on the market conditions for FrameMaker. The majority of our customers use FrameMaker on Microsoft Windows and Sun Solaris platforms.
Adobe is continuing Macintosh development for flagship print and web publishing solutions such as Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign(r) CS, Photoshop(r) CS, Illustrator(r) CS, GoLive(r) CS, and Acrobat(r).
    Q. How much of your FrameMaker base is currently using Macintosh?
    A. It is our policy to not comment on the size of our user base. However, sales of FrameMaker licenses have been greater on the Window sand Solaris platforms for a number of years.
    Q. How much longer will FrameMaker 7.0 for Macintosh be available?
    A. Adobe FrameMaker 7.0 for Macintosh will be available to distributors and licensing customers and through the Adobe Store, until April 21, 2004.
    Q. Will Adobe release another version of FrameMaker for Solaris and Windows?
    A. Its our policy not to disclose future product plans but moving forward, Adobe's planned development efforts for FrameMaker will focus on the Windows and Solaris platforms.
    Q. Will Macintosh users continue to get support from Adobe on FrameMaker?
    A. Adobe will continue to provide complimentary support for FrameMaker 7.0 for Macintosh until April 21, 2005, approximately one year. Adobe will honor fee-based technical support contracts for the Mac version until they expire. Adobe Open Option (AOO) maintenance contracts can no longer be ordered. • FrameMaker or something else? Advice please.

    Hello all,
I am trying to gather enough information in order to make an informed decision on which documentation tool is most appropriate for my new job.
A little background...I am an experience technical writer with Word (for shorter documentation) and FrameMaker (for larger documents). The last version of FrameMaker I had used was v9 (but I knew it very well).
Now, I am in a position to choose a publishing tool.
    I currently own:
Word 2013 (happy to continue to use this for shorter quick/dirty documentation)
    Creative Cloud
My choices for documentation (for various reasons) are currently [cost is not a number one concern]:
    FrameMaker (for familiarity reasons)
    MadCap Flare
Sphinx (I was asked to look into this tool but reStructuredtext doesn't appeal to me and even offer the formatting flexibility I require)
    Requirements:
Must enable OS agnostic collaboration (usually just markups and commenting)
NOTE: My current solution is to output as PDF and save to Crocodoc personal (check them out!). So this requirement may be moot.
Single source documentation that will output/accommodate (with little or no edits) to the following formats: XML/HTML5 (web publishing), and PDF. [also potentially CHM help format but this is a bonus]
    Excellent content/design control
Must scale well for large documentation
Corporate requirement: must play nice with git (gitorious.org) for source control
      Questions:
Are there any suitable tools, that meet all the above criteria, in the Adobe CC that I could leverage?
If 1) is a negative, how well does FrameMaker v11 compare against MadCap Flare? What makes FM the better choice?
I have heard that FrameMaker is end of life... Is that true? If so, what is replacing FrameMaker?
    Thank you very much,
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn in beautiful Vancouver
When I look at your requirements, I think you have a perfect business case for DITA. Your toolset could include:
FrameMaker 11 (maybe with Leximation's DITA-FMx plugin) for authoring the content and publishing it to PDF
oXygen XML Author for authoring/reviewing the content and publishing it to HTML-based deliverables (CHM, XHTML, HTML5, webhelp, mobile help, EPUB...)
There are my comments to your requirements:
Must enable OS agnostic collaboration (usually just markups and commenting)
CHECK: oXygen XML Author has some nice review features and runs on Windows, Mac OS and Linux.
    http://www.oxygenxml.com/demo/Review_Panel.html
NOTE: My current solution is to output as PDF and save to Crocodoc personal (check them out!). So this requirement may be moot.
Also nice, I like this Crocodoc.
Single source documentation that will output/accommodate (with little or no edits) to the following formats: XML/HTML5 (web publishing), and PDF. [also potentially CHM help format but this is a bonus]
CHECK: DITA's source format is XML. Output or export to XML by any tool is usually ugly and therefore useless. oXygen XML Author can output to HTML5. For PDF output, you can use:
FrameMaker (if necessary with Leximation's  DITA-FMx plugin)
    XSL-FO
DITA2Go (via Word, if you have strong nerves)
    Excellent content/design control
CHECK: DITA files can be validated to check whether the structure is OK. Style guides can be integrated in the DITA editors to check style guide compliance, for example:
Scalability (reliable content design - even with a 400 page count)
CHECK: FrameMaker can easily generate a 400-page book from DITA-sourced content.
Corporate requirement: must play nice with git (gitorious.org) for source control
CHECK: This website has been created with DITA-sourced content: http://www.hr.uottawa.ca/
All the content is managed in a git repository.
External content links (i.e. images for easy updating)
CHECK: all images are referenced, but you can also do this with topics and basically every element, using DITA's conref (= content  reference) mechanism:
    http://intdev.stc.org/2011/03/dita-1-2-whats-in-it-for-writers/
Links with relative paths (for portability)
CHECK: all links have relative paths, for example:
    <image href="../_graphics/logo.png"/>
    Very flexible layout design
CHECK: DITA source files are XML files, so they can be published in many different ways, using different stylesheets for each output type. I presented a case study about this at the Information Energy conference and we also wrote a blog post about this:
    http://www.scripto.nu/en/case-study-fifthplay-4-manuals-for-the-price-of-1/
You can see some examples here, generated from the same DITA source via FrameMaker:
    http://www.scripto.nu/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/fifthplay_user_manual.pdf
    http://www.scripto.nu/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/DELTA_gebruikershandleiding.pdf
    Flexible indexing, TOC, Footnotes
CHECK: Yes, it's all there in DITA:
    http://docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.2/os/spec/common/indexing-d.html#indexingdgroup
    http://docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.2/os/spec/langref/fn.html#fn
    http://docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.2/os/spec/langref/toc.html#toc
    Output PDF, XML, HTML5
CHECK: Yes, it's all there in the DITA editors:
PDF: see examples above, and this one: http://www.scripto.nu/samples/nomadesk/Nomadesk_getting_started_guide_final.pdf
XML: DITA source files are XML files
    HTML5: http://www.scripto.nu/samples/fifthplay/webhelp/#ta_smart_plugs_installeren.html
    Mobile Help: http://www.scripto.nu/samples/nomadesk/webhelp-mobile/
About the FrameMaker "end of life" rumour: I've been an Adobe-Certified FrameMaker instructor since 1996 and I've been hearing this rumour since then, so don't worry about it. And if you do worry about any tool's alleged end of life, then you've got another good reason to "go DITA" because it's an open standard, not a tool. And DITA XML is already supported by a dozen or so editors and even more content management systems.
    Cheers

  • Can't start FM 9 on Windows 7: "cannot initialize dictionaries"

I am trying to move a copy of FM 9 from an old laptop to a new one running Windows 7 Enterprise. My IT guy reinstalled the software from CD and applied my license key. When I try to start FM, it gives this error during the "Core" startup: "FrameMaker cannot initialize its dictionaries. Either the LanguageDir entry specified in the initialization file is missing or incorrect, or the files in the LanguageDir are missing or corrupted."
I still have the old laptop, so I can compare and copy the files and directories directly. As far as I can see, the LanguageDir entry in the maker.ini is identical on both machines. Both have a dict folder, and I see the same number of files in both. Just for good measure I copied the old folder's contents across to the new folder, but that didn't help.

Very good that you found the cause. I remember now that it was recommended to copy the installation files to your hard disk. See the FrameMaker online help:

  • Disappointed with product introduction

I am new to FrameMaker.  Based on its popularity and others' comments, I'm sure it is a fascinating, feature-packed program that can do a lot for me in my technical writing.  However, I am disappointed with Adobe's lack of introduction to the product.  Any product should come with material that tells me what is special about it and who is meant to use it.  It should also have sample work to show what can be done with the product.  Instead, Adobe begins with a Getting Started with FrameMaker that introduces the user interface and screen basics, which are not yet of concern at this introductory stage.  Note also that there is a section called "What's new in FrameMaker 9", clearly oriented to past users, but totally ignoring the need of new users to learn about the essence of FrameMaker.
I hope the folks at Adobe are listening and will provide some introductory material.  I would be most thankful for it.

I agree that it's hard to find good getting started training materials in the FrameMaker package that you buy. Some versions of FrameMaker were shipped with a training disk, or with training materials on the main disk. I'm not sure if recent versions do.
Recently some Adobe products have come with a 30-day free subscription to Lynda.com online training. Sometimes there's something in the package that tells you about these goodies, and other times you'll get email that tells you about them. You probably have to register your software at Adobe.com. You'll need to create an Adobe user account (free) if you don't have one. The adobe.com site isn't easy to find your way around. On the home page, type register in the search box at the top right, click Product Registration, and the registration log-in page appears. You can create an account if you need to.
Search Google for terms like "adobe.tv framemaker tutorial," "free online video training framemaker," and "framemaker training resources" without quotes for some good links. These searches include content from the official adobe.com site as well as others.
Forum participants are users who volunteer to help others in the community, as they've been helped - passing a torch. You're always welcome to post questions here. It's most helpful to would-be helpers if you state the subject of your question clearly, one question or problem per message thread. And, provide your exact version of FrameMaker; it's the version number (like 9.1) and the build number (pxxx) displayed with Help > About FrameMaker.
And, you can help others who struggle to find good introductory material in the package by posting a formal request at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform.

  • Some text goes missing in the PDF output after I convert FM8 book

    Hi,
I am using Framemaker 8.0, Acrobat 8.0 Professional, Acrobat Distiller 8.0.
When I convert my Framemaker books to PDFs, some text (especially Table Heading tags) go missing in the PDF output. I have tried to change the font colour, change the cell shading, and many other options. But, the problem persists.
I saw some similar links on the forums with this kind of problems. For example,
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=952909
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3285145
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4167112
    http://helpx.adobe.com/framemaker/kb/troubleshoot-pdf-creation-problems-framemaker.html
After going through these links from the forums, I realized that this is a known issue. But, the above links direct me to Microsoft patches and these patches are available only for Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, and Windwos Vista operating systems. My operating system is Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit version.
One more thing I want to say is we have never faced this problem earlier. It started appearing now.
While I know that the world (many of us) moved on to Framemaker 9 and 10, I also know that there is someone out there to help me to overcome this issue.
    Thanks and regards,
    Raghavacharyulu NCB

    Hi Harpreet,
    Thanks for your response.
We tried this option also. In fact, the Distiller shows this option by default. Secondly, we have recently updated our old template to reflect the new corporate styles and we suspect something went wrong there. We once again took the old template and updated with the new colour definitions and fonts, this time very carefully and it started working. Now, the text is not missing.
So, the result is something is wrong with our template. Quite surprising is it is inconsistent and some places the text appears and some places it does not.
Where do you work? Are you in India?

  • How to define reading order independent of pages?

I need to use the reading order tools to make PDF files accessible. The document I'm currently working with is a standard trifold brochure, which has the outer panels on the first page of a landscape-oriented, letter-size document, and the inner panels on the second. In this common scenario, the proper reading order, reflecting how one would read a folded hard copy, is:
the right column of page 1 (outside; cover)
the left, center, and right columns of page 2, respectively (inside)
the left and center columns of page 1 (outside; the center column is the back)
Clearly, this requires the linearized reading order to begin on page 1, continue onto page 2, then return to page 1. However, I can find no way to do this with the tools in Acrobat. Can someone please help?
    Thanks
(Version information: Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.2.0 on Windows XP)

You need to start with a tagged PDF.
The tagged PDF must have a welll-formed structure tree.
From that 'foundation' you can work with read order, reflow & accessibility.
Much of what you desire can be established upfront in the authoring application provided the application provides support for tag management of tagged output PDF.
Currently, the three applications that provide reliable tag management are Adobe's FrameMaker, InDesign and Microsoft Word (via Adobe's PDFMaker or Net-Centric's 'PAWs' plug-in for MS Word.
Other applications provide various degrees of tag management; however, the tagged output PDF's structure tag tree is not as well-formed and calls for more manual editing of the PDF structure tag tree.
    I
s your document authored in InDesign? If so, the following may be useful.
"Accessible Content Workflow with Adobe InDesign CS4 and Acrobat 9"
    http://w1000.mv.us.adobe.com/cfusion/event/index.cfm?event=list&type=ondemand_seminar&loc= en_us
Have your Adobe ID in hand. Tug on the link, sign in with your Adobe ID.
Page opens telling you that the Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro Add-in is opening the meeting room (launch of the recording)
Recording appears in a separate window. If add-in not installed, dialog present to let you install it.
    Ancilliary documentation.

Link to use: "Creating Accessible PDF Documents with Adobe InDesign CS4 (PDF, 292k)"
    http://www.adobe.com/accessibility/pdfs/accessibledocswithindesignCS4.pdf
If your document is authored in Publisher be sure to use Adobe PDFMaker, configured to support accessibility, to provide your initial tagged output PDF. Then, with Acrobat Professional, perform the requisite manual edit of the structure tree.
    Something else to look at.
For multi-column PDFs you can manually establish Articles & Article flow to walk a column's thread through pages.
    See Acrobat Help.
