Adobe Lightroom 1.0 Licensing Question

Does anyone have any idea how Adobe is going to license Lightroom? Meaning, will you be able to buy one license and use it on both Windows and Mac OS X? I am thinking probably not, but am interested as this is how competitors like Bibble Pro (BibbleLabs) and Capture One Pro (PhaseOne) license their products. They allow you to install on both operating systems with one license thought stipulate that the license is for 1 user only. It would be wonderful if Adobe will license Lightroom the same way so I don't have to put out twice the money to run it on my 2 different OS's.

Yes, it is in the FAQ. Cross platform One CD/Download. or two of the same Platform it is a license for Two!

  • Adobe Lightroom asks for License

After registering to Adobe CC, Lightroom still asks for license key.

With the introduction of Lightroom in the PS CC package, there are two licensing processes. The original perpetual license which is input manually and the CC copy which gets input automatically by the CC App Manager. If you still have a original perpetual license version or trial installed you just need to uninstall it, the uninstall will not affect your preferences, catalog or user files. Then shut down your system and reboot, open the CC app manager and you should have Lightroom available to download.

  • Adobe Lightroom 4 - Some Questions / Help Needed

    Hi everyone.
After advice from several experts, I've just purchased Adobe Lightroom 4. I've already got Photoshop CS5, but I was looking for something proper to organise my photos, plus I found Lightroom easier to do the sort of editing I am wanting to do. Now, I only really use photoshop for things like colour pops, or really in-depth editing. Anyway, I'm loving Lightroom so far, but there is some stuff I'm not very sure of, so I'd appreciate some help
    1. Organising
Firstly, I'm not really sure how to organise. At the moment, I've just got lots of folders with random events in My Pictures on W7, so I might have a folder called April 11, which contains photos from that month but that might have been a wedding or an easter holiday or both. So it doesn't really work. \
I understand in Lightroom what catalogs are. But I know enough to know that I don't want to group mine into those, its getting too complicated. What I don't know though is the difference between a collection and a folder. Basically, I'm wanting to reimport and reorganise all my photos, so I want to put them into "events" as such like you can do on iPhoto on a mac, so I would have "France Summer Holiday 11" for example, or "Mia's Wedding". I'm not really sure on the best way to do this ...?
    2. Editing
I've played around quite a bit so far, and I really like what I've seen. On a lot of photos, I've made a lot of changes. But from what I can see, these changes are stored merely in Lightroom itself. For example, at the moment I'm importing photos from my external disk into Lightroom, which then saves them in C://My Pictures/Lightroom/Pictures . When I go look at these photos in windows explorer which I know I have edited, it doesn't show any of the changes or editing I've done on them. Now I realise this is me being stupid, but why doesn't it? Supposing I then want to email that photo to a friend that I have edited? How would I do that? I don't want to have to open lightroom and export every single photo I edit? There must be a simpler way?
Likewise for backing up, because all my files are in subfolders within C:// My pictures / Lightroom / Pictures, to back up I was simply going to set up windows to copy that latter folder onto my external HDD everytime I plugged it in. This would be pointless however if it isn't physically overwriting the original photo with my edited version?
    3. Editing 2
Something else I like to do is make lots of different edits to the same photo. For example, at the moment I'm editing a photo of a pier at night. I spent ages adjusting colours and lighting and so on, and now it looks great. But I would also like to save a copy of that photo with the "old age photo" effect preset on. Is this possible? and how do I do it? Other than obviously importing a duplicate?
    4. & 5. & 6 - Misc:
    4. Simple question - how do I add tags, keywords or comments if I haven't done it on import?
    5. My camera doesn't have built in GPS. Is it possible for me to manually geotag photos (in a batch, say for a Summer Holiday to NY), could I manually add a geotag for all these photos?
    6. I also forgot to add copyright information on import for some, is it possible to do this after import and how?
    7. I normally shoot in JPEG. I probably shoot shoot in RAW as everyone tells me to do so. Are there any significant advantages in terms of quality, and for editing with?
Thanks for any help given. I appreciate this is a lot of questions, but I could really use the advice.

    Hi William,

I am not so sure if you understand *catalogs*.
You need a catalog, exactly 1 in my opinion. A catalog is a database. The Lightroom database, where records about your images are stored, including the pointers to your images, which are not inside a catalog! LR backups just does the backup of the catalog (i.e. a file ending .lrcat). You need to take care separately that your real images are backed up !
Inside your LR database the best way to organize is via collections - this will give you what you want with "France summer holiday 11" etc.
Folders are relatively unimportant, just storage buckets. They should be *handy portions*, I would prefer them with below 3000 images each, as there currently some bugs to those bigger ones.
Before you start with LR, you can organize your pictures in Mac Finder / WindowsExplorer.
Or you could do it with the help of LR, by copying your images over during import into the destination folders (and deleting today's folders afterwards after having verified that everything is fine).
A simple date-based structure will do, I'd recommend  a root parent folder like "LR images", underneath one folder per year (\2010\, \2011\, \2012\...) and underneath them either
just one folder per month (LR can auto-create them for you)
or you create the folders in import dialog as e.g. "YYYY-MM-DD description of shoot", to have a mini-diary overview also in your OS.
Apart from that you create collections, either *dumb ones*, where you drag images into, or smart ones, where you specify criteria according to which they get auto-filled.

LR will never overwrite your original photos.
You can save most of the catalog content into the xmp-part of the original photo, which is either a sidecar-file (.xmp) or part of the file format, like for DNG, TIFF, PSD, JPG. To do so you select the image in LR and hit <ctrl> s. Or you set it up for continuous update, which creates a lot of operations while you play back and forth in develop.
I do that on my own, typically twice per file: once I am done with develop, once I am done with keywording and other metadata update.
LR contains records about your images, i.e. a set of instructions how they are to be interpreted. That is all.
So of course you need LR to export the result of these instructions, which is actually pretty quick.
To backup your images you need to do that just once, plus you backup your LR catalog. Or if you save xmp to the files, you can do another backup once xmp is ready.
I would not consider this pointless. You just have to think that there are 2 places with data for your images: the images themselves and a database with interpretation instructions.
    3. Editing 2
Something else I like to do is make lots of different edits to the same photo. For example, at the moment I'm editing a photo of a pier at night. Is this possible? and how do I do it? Other than obviously importing a duplicate?
Yes, this is one of LR's beauties: you create a so-called *virtual copy*, which is just a 2nd record for the same original image file with different interpretation settings, like black-and-white, a different crop size, different development etc. You can have as many virtual copies as you like, and you'll see them as additional thumbnails.
Virtual copies are not saveable into xmp, though. There is another concept which is saveable into xmp: snapshots. but these are different states in develop history, and you do not see outside develop module that you have several.
If you export virtual copies e.g. to jpg one file per virutal copy will be created.

ad 4: you use the library module, metadata panel to enter.
ad 5: you use the map module. Either you manually drop your images on a map, or you have a separate GPS track to load and have LR assign via matching time-stamps.
    ad 6: like 4
ad 7: You don't need JPG from your camera, you can achieve better results viy LR from RAW. Yes, there are significant advantages as to editing headroom.
Overall, may I suggest my favorite learning material for LR? First watch Julieanne's Tutorial Videos.
Then go play and use Victoria Bampton's eBook or paper copy of her "Missing FAQs to LR4": http://www.lightroomqueen.com/books/adobe-lightroom-4-missing-faq/

  • Question Mark in black diamond in Safari and Adobe Lightroom

I have a problem with the “question mark in black diamond” phenomenon noted elsewhere in these forums. My problem is different in certain aspects, though, and I’ve found nothing which suggests a way forward in other threads.
I get the “? in black diamond” appearing in two contexts:
    (1) in the UI of the Web Module in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom when using the LRG One with PapPal Template (from lightroomgalleries.com), and selecting a currency symbol other than $ (i.e. when using £, EUR, or the Yen symbol)
    (2) when viewing web pages generated by the Lightroom Web Module with the PayPal template in Safari
In both these contexts, the currency symbol is displayed as “? in black diamond” in place of the "£" symbol.
The strange thing about this is that when I view the output in other browsers (I’ve tried IE5 for Mac, Camino, Firefox, OmniWeb and Opera), the “£” currency symbol shows up ok. However, it can’t just be a Safari issue, as the “?” shows up in the Lightroom Web Module interface as well.
I’ve posted a screenshot of the Lightroom interface here: http://www.lochaberphoto.co.uk/currency.html , and an example of gallery output here: http://www.lochaberphoto.co.uk/test2/index.html (click on the left-hand thumbnail to bring up the image page and check out the dropdown menu beneath the image).
Before posting here, I’ve tried various forums relating to Lightroom (Adobe Lightroom U2U, lightroomgalleries.com, luminouslandscape.com) but to no avail.
So this is a last chance post: hopefully one of the OS X experts here may be able to suggest a reason for this (is it a font issue? or something to do with UTF-8, or Safari’s default encoding? – I’m not a coder, but I really want to find the answer so I’ll try just about anything…), and maybe a way to solve it. BTW, I get the same experience on my G4 iMac and my MacPro, so I guess it’s not an Intel-specific issue.
Thanks in anticipation for any answers, or follow-up questions
    Jim

    Hi Tom
Thanks for this. I've tried previously changing the Default encoding in Safari Prefs to Western (ISO Latin 1), but found that did not help.
Following your advice I tried changing encoding from the View menu, and find that the £-sign displays correctly in both ISO Latin 1 and MacRoman (though not in UTF-8). The odd thing about this is that with Default Encoding in the Prefs set to either of those, I still get the ? until I go into the View menu and change from Default to Latin 1 or MacRoman, whereupon the £-sign shows up! Can't imagine how that can be. Tried closing and re-opening Safari after setting Pref to Roman 1, but still need to use the View menu to get the £-sign. Restaring the Mac doesn't help either.
So, Tom, with your help I now have a viable workaround, but as this is going to remain an issue for other Mac/ Safari users visiting my site, I'd like to find a way of preventing it happening. Can you suggest how it can be that Safari needs to be told twice (in Prefs and in View menu) to use ISO Latin 1 or MacRoman before it does so?
Look forward to any further comments
    Jim
(P.S.: It seems to me this must be linked to the fact that the ? shows up in the Lightroom interface, and that the fault lies with the PayPal gallery Template I'm using. So I'm wondering if there's anything you - or anyone else - can suggest that I can put to the developer of the Template which will enable him to resolve the issue - he's a Windows user, but has made one suggestion that I adapt the encoding in a file called transformer.xslt from it's default of ISO_8859-15 to UTF-8. I've tried that and tried also ISO_8859-1, but the issue persists regardless.)

  • Adobe Lightroom Photo editing question! Help please

Hey there, I'm trying to find a way to edit a certain part of a picture rather than the whole thing. For instance, if I want to make a small area black and white, while I increase the saturation of another area, and decrease the temperature of another area. How do I go about selecting only part of the picture, edit it, and then revert back to the whole picture and edit another part of the same picture? Please help me. I am using Adobe lightroom.

Is there any way to get a square section and edit it? I watched the movie which was extremely informative but still there was no way demonstrated to edit a particular area besides by using the mouse to just paint over it or drag through a huge section of the picture.

  • Using Time Machine to back up an external hard drive dedicated to Adobe Lightroom 5

I recently began to use Adobe Lightroom 5 (I continue to use Aperture, as I have for years).    All of the Lightroom image files and catalogs are on one external hard drive, which I use on my iMac, my Macbook Pro, and in the digital labs of a school where I'm taking a course.
Not yet having developed a protocoI for creating a back up of all my Lightroom image files and catalogs that I could use in the event of my Lightroom-dedicated drive's failure, I have just done a drag and drop of the whole drive's contents to another external drive (which, as it happens, I have been using for some time for my Aperture vaults).
I am thinking of removing the dedicated Lightroom drive from the excluded list of my iMac's Time Machine (which uses yet another external drive), so that I can easily and automatically create back ups of changes to the Lightroom external drive without having to do the cumberome and inelegant drag and drop at some yet-to-be-determined frequency.  (The Macbook Pro uses a Time Capsule for its Time Machine; I envision using only the iMac's TM external drive for Lightroom backups.)
What is the simplest and most desirable way to actually execute the backup?  I envision that it would be this: that every time I want to do a Lightroom back up, I'd mount the Lightroom external drive on the iMac (or keep it mounted if my work session has just been on the iMac) and then ask Time Machine to "Back Up Now." When the backup is finished, I'd dismount the dedicated Lightroom drive.
A related question is what if anything would be the effect on my Lightroom work if a Time Machine back up began while I was working in Lightroom? Or if for some reason an hourly TM back up began and I needed to quickly end a Lightroom session before the backup was completed?

  • Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my Canon Mark III 5D Camera.

Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my new Canon Mark III 5D Camera.  How can I get my files open to view and edit?  I am using LR3, Photoshop CS3 and Bridge CS3.  Do I need to upgrade these programs or is there another way to get these programs to recognize my files?
When I try opening the raw images in Lightroom, the thumbnails say "Preview unavailable for this file"  ... when I click "import" an error message pops up that says "The files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."
When I try opening the raw images in Photoshop, an error message pops up saying "could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
When I try opening the raw images in Bridge, it just shows an icon with the file name and CR2.
    Please help!!!

Unless I missed an announcement, today, LR6 isn't available, yet, right?  Only Adobe employees and beta testers would know what LR6 does differently at this point and they're all sworn to secrecy.
LR5 is available as a standalone version.
    PS-CS6 is available as a serial-number-licensed version.
PS-CC + LR5 are also available as a Photography Plan subscription for $10/month with a minimum OS versions of OSX 10.7 (and probably 10.8, soon) and Windows 7.
Bridge is part of PS, not a separate program.
LR5 standalone and LR+PS-CC plan are both available on this page:  http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software.html
PS-CS6 can be found on this page:  Creative Suite 6 which can be found by searching www.adobe.com for Photoshop CS6 and clicking the Buy link in the on-the-fly search results.
As with any new Adobe software, it might be wise to run it in trial mode for a few days/weeks to see if it works well with your computer, before purchasing and finding out you might need a new computer, first.

  • I just bought the MacBook Pro 13" and it says I have Adobe Lightroom 5, but when I try to register it and put serial number , it only has 6 boxes. Do they mean serial number of my computer  because thats 12 digits

I'm trying to register Adobe Lightroom 5 on my new 13" MacBookPro Retina. When they say type in serial number , theres only 6 boxes. My macbook has 12 digits so I can't advance to next question. what am I doing wrong. It sayd that the adobe Lightroom 5 is on this macbook pro...Can someone help ?

Did you buy this directly from Apple or from elsewhere. I've never heard of Lightroom coming pre-installed so it sounds like you MBP might not really be "new."
Enter your serial number here to check the support status and see if the computer has been previously registered:

If you did not buy it from Apple and that site shows any purchase date other than yours (± a few days), return the computer to the fraud perpetrators who sold it, get your money back, and buy directly from Apple next time

  • Problem exporting web photo gallery in Adobe Lightroom

Can not export a web photo gallery using SlideShowPro 1.9.8.5 in Adobe Lightroom 1.4.  In the Web Tab I click on Export which brings up the Save Web Gallery window, I select location, give a file name and click save, but nothing is created.  Have noted that in the Save As Type box the only option is Supported Files, is this OK?  If so, what could the problem be?

Can't answer the question without looking at the code. Being you have DW, I would parse the code there and you will get more help in the Dreamweaver forum.
