Adobe Lightroom, Drobo performance issue.

Setup: MacPro 2.8GHz (early 2008), 12GB ram (properly interleaved), OS 10.6.3, 4 bay FW800 Drobo
My MacPro just went through a thorough Apple Hardware Test: Clear
When I run the current version of Adobe Lightroom it has recently run extremely slow. Historically, I've put my catalog files on my Drobo; however, recently even a new empty catalog file that has virtually nothing in it seems to take substantially longer (Lightroom states times that are 10 x's longer or more!)
Any advice?

Check Adobe's forums to see if there are any issues with Lightroom and 10.6.3.

  • Lightroom 4 performance issues

    Hello,
Months ago I switched from Aperture 3 to Lightroom 3 and quickly fell in love with the program.
I switched due to constant freezing and crashes in Aperture 3. I invested time and money to learn Lightroom 3. Performance in Lightroom 3 was superb. Anything I would do with regards to any type of adjustment gave instant results on the screen. Program never crashed or froze onec. Quite frankly, I was shocked in a very positive way.
This was on Macbook Pro i5, 8GB RAM, Hi Res Antiglare screen with Snow Leopard.
I purchased Lightroom 4. I did a clean install of OSX Lion and, clean install of LR4. New catalogs, no importing of anything. LR 4 is sooo slow. It works just like Aperture 3 worked, the  precise reason that made me dump it.
The longer LR4 is opened, the slower it becomes. The more adjustments are applied, the slower it becomes. I will use brush and I have to wait to see results. I can't use brush. It takes me 15-30 min to brush small part of the image. I will slide adjustments and wait. I will click on crop tool and wait, wait, wait. I really love this program but I just can't work like that.
Would anyone share some light or advice on what could be done, on what is going on?
    Thank you.

    Rob,
I am working with NEF files and have done so in LR3. I understand from some reading that one of the benefits from converting files to DNG is that they are faster to work with. So I just copied one of my NEF as DNG and I have been working on it for about 15 minutes applying brush after brush and other adjustments to see if LR4 will slow down. Thus far it has been incredibly faster. I will continue to work on this one image and maybe convert few more to DNG to test but do you think that there might be some issue with NEF format? Another bizzare thing I just noticed is that when I open NEF image, my memory quickly goes up to over 3GB and that's not even during applying adjustments. Working now with DNG, memory is just around 1.3 GB. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE???
I wonder what type of files are other LR4 users that are reporing performance issues working with.
    Please share your thoughts.
    Thank you.

  • Lightroom 4 performance issues solved!

Buy or build a new computer - (intel i7 3770K or similiar) overclock to 4ghz, 16GB ram, solid state drive for boot and programs
Install only windows, lightroom, photoshop, and windows security on computer.
Put computer power management into high power mode (keeps the processor prepped at all times)
turn off all development modules except basic and tone curve.. (especially evil histogram)
This has gotten me almost lag free performance while editing in lightroom.... and I say almost because it's still not pefect . With this setup I can finally crop photos without having to wait a second or more for the draw tool to become responsive... but not in full screen mode of course.
By the way, I think that these types of contortions are ridiculous since I used to have lag free editing in adobe camera raw on a computer with 1/16 the hardware specs (and running vista!). However the workflow is so much better in lightroom than any other option that I'm willing to bend over backwards to make it work.  So, adobe, here is your notice... We're all looking for something better.

Me too. From best I can tell, it's karma, luck, will o' th' gods...
Works unencumbered on some moderately-powered machines, slow-as-molasses on some high powered machines, or vice versa - both Windows & Mac.
That said, rebuilding computer forces new drivers for system devices, and re-initializes a bunch of stuff - which may contribute to performance.
Reminder: abnormally poor performance occurs when Lr is getting held up, instead of doing it's thing - whether that happens or not is dependent on a lot of factors... - point being, if Lr4 is operating normally (meaning efficiently / unencumbered) on 2 computers, then it'll be faster on the faster machine of course, but the big trick is taking away the hurdles...
Congrats to OP for taking the initiative to improve his/her situation .
Interesting tidbit: My Lr performance often goes south when my internet connection drops out - which it does far too often where I live and do most of my work from. Why? I have no idea, but if I had to guess I'd say Lr is using some library that does some system call, which gets hung up when it had an internet connection but lost it - such is not handled gracefully, memory is not released, and it keeps happening..., or something like that. I know some folks problems were due to having wonky DVDs in their drive, or USB phones connected, or monitor cal devices... - doesn't take much, and not everybody will have the same problem due to the same thing...
Even though my luck has been relatively good w/Lr4, I do hope Adobe takes a serious look at how they're doing things...

  • Adobe AIR 3 Performance Issues and Code Signing Certificate Problem

I recently updated to Adobe AIR 3.0 SDK (and runtime) doing HTML/Javascript development using Dreamweaver CS5.5 in a Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit).
The AIR app I'm developing runs well from within Dreamweaver. But when I create/package the AIR app and install it on my machine:
    1. The app literally CRAWLS running it in my Windows 7 12G RAM machine (especially when I use the mouse to mouse over a 19-by-21 set of hyperlinks on a grid) --- IT IS THAT SLOOOOWWWW...
    2. The app runs fine in my Mac OS X 10.6.8 with 4G RAM, also using the Adobe AIR 3 runtime.
About the Code Signing Certificate problem:
When I try to package the AIR app with ADT using AIR's temporary certificate feature, I get the error message "Could not generate timestamp: handshake alert: unrecognized_name".
I found some discussions on this problem in an Adobe AIR Google Groups forum, but no one has yet offered any resolution to the issue. Someone said Adobe is using the Geotrust timestamping service --- located at https://timestamp.geotrust.com/tsa --- but going to this page produces a "404 --- Page not found" error.

  • Critical performance issues

Adobe LiveCycle Designer 7.1 is having serious performance issues when dealing with some forms. These are fairly simple, one-page forms, around 215KiB. I am running on a Pentium D 2.8GHz with 1GiB of RAM. When trying to open the forms, LiveCycle eats up a whole CPU core and several hundred MiB of memory, and it takes on the order of 10 minutes to open. Copying a single form field and pasting it is an hour-long operation. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling, it had no effect. The computer is clean of viruses/spyware and is as up-to-date as I can get it. Deleting and recreating the forms is an absolute last-resort option, and at that point not using PDF at all is under consideration, so I would like to recover them if possible. The forms work fine under Adobe Reader, no performance issues. Any ideas?

I'll have to check to find out whether that's allowed.
Another form started doing this.  Working fine, then paste one more form field and Designer goes to hell.  I killed it, then go back and try to view the XML source of the form, Designer took a while to do so.  I notice:
repeat previous line for several pages
A line being repeated several hundred times sets off my brokenness detector; any ideas?

  • Performance issue with Adobe forms

    Dear SAP Experts,
We have the following issue/requirement from our client. The client is on SAP ECC 6.0 - production environment.
The client is highlighting  performance issue while accessing the adobe forms for HR and FI business process ( both static and interactive ).
                    Examples are
        FI – Invoice Approvals
                    HR – Job Salary Change
The client is asking us to provide best practices surrounding:
    1.       How to improve the performance of the adobe forms while accessing in SAP.
    2.       Is there any other technology which we can use in SAP to replace the adobe forms which has better performance factor.
    3.       Are there solutions such as webdynpro floor plan manager, UI Fiori which can be alternately used?
    Regards,
    Sakthi

    Hello Priya,
Adobe forms are easy to develop and much more comfortable than SAP Scripts and Smartforms. Initially they are a bit difficult but once you have your hands on, they are the most simplest things in ABAP.
Performance in Adobe forms is a mix of both fine tuning the Layout as well as back end coding.
Performance in Adobe forms cannot be done overnight. A lot of care has to be taken during the initial stage of development.
As far as my experience is concerned, please consider the below points while developing SAP Adobe forms.
    1) Avoid Scripting (Javascript/Formcalc) as much as possible inside the form. It drastically reduces the performance and makes the form to execute slower. If you still want to use scripting(which cannot be avoided for some requirements), use Formcalc since it is comparatively faster than JavaScript.
    2) Try to avoid the coding inside the Form Interface. You can always handle the maximum coding in the Driver program and pass it to the form.
    3) Use Form Caching.
For forms that have fixed layout, its a good way to increase the performance of form rendering. In the layout, go to Form Properties. Then Click on Defaults tab and select Allow Form Rendering To Be Cached On Server. Then Click OK.
For forms that have flowable or dynamic layout, render the forms on the client side because it improves performance.
Last but not the least, please go through the below post by Otto Gold which is worth a read at least once.

  • HTML Article performance issues in Adobe Viewer on iPad

I have created a HTML Article using DPS but when I come to view it on Adobe Viewer in iPad the content does not scroll smoothly and the content is cut off and cropped (the whole page is not displayed), it is very judery and struggles to render the HTML below 'the fold' so to speak.
I have tried both options for importing HTML into DPS and both have the same performance/lag isuues.
I have a video in my HTML that seemed to be causing an issue where the video streaming was struggling to be pulled through, so I have treid YouTube and Vimeo video streaming and the performance/display issue is not resolved. I then tried embbeding an mp4 directly using HTML5 to see if it was a connection/bandwidth issue and the problem still exists. However the videos do play, its just the fact that the container is cropped in half.
Sometimes the whole HTML article renders but then when you swipe back up the page it struggles to render the content above? Also then when you swipe back down the page the content is also cropped that was visible before?
I have reviewed every available discussion on the Adobe Community and other resources but all the fixes mentioned do not have any effect.
If anybody can assist or has been experiencing the same issues any advise would be welcome.
Oh, the HTML Article contains some JS too, it does function correctly but I was wondering if JS causes problems? Just a thought.

Well, I think I may have found the answer so I thought I would share with the Community incase anyone else experiences the same type of issues.
After testing another peice of HTML that also included video streaming and heavy JavaScript, I narrowed the issue down to my JS. I had two Nivo Slider Carousels that were the route of the performance issues.
The other test HTML Article scrolls smoothly and the video pulls in as intended, although once in a while there is a slight delay in the page scrolling up and down but this is hardly noticeable.
I hope this may be of some help to other's in the future?

  • Adobe Flex Performance iSSUE

    hI,
I need to build UI using ADobe flex that will connect BPM system. I have concurrent 500 users. Is this is feasible to develop application(UI) using Flex for such kind of application.
    Thanks,
    Vikash

    Hello Victor,
We are using Flex at Taleo for an application that can have much more than 1,000 concurrent users. You just need to make sure that your architecture can scale horizontally and vertically. Flex isn't the best here, we also do have performance issues. If speed is your primary target, I suggests you to go pure HTML (5) and Javascript (jQuery, Dojo, etc.)
    Good luck.

  • Adobe Lightroom Issues

Has anyone had any issues running Adobe Lightroom v1.2 in Leopard? Most notably not allowing you to get into the print module.

Yeah, the Print module doesn't work at all for me. (v1.2)
There's the odd graphical glitch here and there, mostly in the History panel in the Develop module, but everything else seems OK.

  • Heavy performance issues using Adobe Interactive Form PDFs generated by SAP BPM

    Dear experts,
we use Adobe Interactive Form PDFs (generated with LiveCycle Designer) as Human Tasks within SAP BPM processes. The PDFs are generated and transmitted correctly, but when they are opened at the receivers PC, Windows freezes for 2-3 minutes, then the PDF opens and can be filled out and sent back. The next PDFs can be opened much faster, but when the PC is restarted, we get the same problem again. We use Adobe Reader XI (11.0.2) on our clients; is their any know performance issue?
Please note, that we have this problem with EVERY Adobe Interactive Form PDF... I created a simple PDF containing just a field and the client PC still freezes. So it can't be in the form or the scripting. Normal static PDFs can be opend without any problems.
    Best regards,
    David

They haven't really announced it, because there is no product to announce. Rather the opposite.
There are no conversion tools, so far as I know.
XFA forms are a non-starter if you want portability.
AcroForms are a nightmare in themselves, because the functionality is limited in Adobe Reader and varies between absent and weird in other products. No idea about Blackberry support.
You will not find a simple recommendation. Rather, you need to use Acroforms and carefully test everything (EVERYTHING: no assumptions) on every platform you intend to support.
Yes, rather unsatisfactory, but until Adobe realise that the future is platform equivalence or irrelevance, this is where we are.

  • Adobe Premiere 4 Elements 4 performance issue

    Hi
I am a new user of Premiere 4 Elements and I completed my first project to get myself through the learning curve. However I experience a serious performance issue on my computer with this product. Sorry about the long post, I tried to give as complete info as possible. Thanks in advance for any advice on solving the issue.
    1. When I open my project, a progress bar stays for several minutes at the near-completed state before the application window opens. Then the window is still frozen for several more minutes (the Windows hourglass displays for about 4 to 5 minutes) before I can actually start using the program.
    2. When I task-switch (e.g. to edit a photo in another application, or to check in Windows Explorer where a file is that I want to open) task-switching is slow, and when I switch back to Premiere 4 Elements, the screen freezes again for several minutes (4 to 6 minutes) before I can continue working. Same happens after I used the option to add media from Hard Drive to the project.
    3. When I press the Play button, the sound sometimes plays while the video preview gets stuck on a single frame. When I wait a while, it seems like Premiere is busy updating the icons on the timeline, and after that, I can play the video again. Sometimes the screen freezes so I canot press the pause button, and the audio just continues playing for a minute or two.
    4. Last night I eventually got the project finished, and started rendering the project to a PAL DVD - quality MPEG. It was still rendering this morning, with the progress bar showing less than a third of progress. At last check it displayed an estimated 16 hours of predicted rendering time, and still increasing the time....
    5. In one week of use, I experienced one to five crashes per evening while using this product.
My input files for the project are existing MPEG files that I loaded from the camera (with it's software) long before I purchased Adobe Premiere. (so I did not use Premiere's feature to import the video). This camera generates a new MPEG file each time you press the start/stop button. I can see hundreds of clips on the camera when I mount it as an external USB hard drive on Windows. I suspect the number of files has to do with my issues, so I need assistance on an improved workflow, given the source format I work with. In my test project the original footage consists of about 140 MPEG clips; about 15 photos sized to PAL DVD size (720 x 5xx), one imported DVD VOB file, and then a menu, a title or two, transition effects, and so on. The final project should render 30 minutes of video, but the original footage is about three times that duration. Can someone please suggest a workflow considering the possibility that I will have to deal with these hundreds of small clips?
The software's box specifies a Pentium 4 and 512 Mb RAM, Direct-X compatibility and 4 Gb HDD space.
    My computer spec's are:
    Intel Core 2, 2.13 GHz,
    2 Gb DDR RAM,
    200Gb Serial ATA HDD, with:
Premiere on partition C: with 25 Gb free,
Project on partition D: with 40 Gb free.
Very entry-level graphics card (purchased the PC with no thought of games or video).
    XP Home is installed.
In Windows Task Manager I notice about One Million Page faults being generated for Adobe Premiere in the periods I mentioned above when Premiere gets stuck. Item 4 above was at 3.5 million page faults with about 25% progress indicated of the rendering process. Is this indicative that I need more RAM?
I have read other posts on this forum that people advise users to have Premiere on one HDD, the swap file on another physical disc and the project on yet another. I can understand the logic, but I checked that my PC was well above the software specifications on the box before I purchased, and I am not so serious about making videos that I would want to upgrade to such a monster PC. Besides if the requirements are such, Adobe should have specified that on the box.
    Thanks, Willem

    Willem,
Looking at your system specs., I see one major bottleneck - your I/O system. You have a partitioned HDD.
This means that the heads on your HDD are being asked to be in several places at the same time. Partitioning is an element left over from a much earlier time in computing and should not be used nowadays, with very few exceptions. I will explain. You have a fixed number of platters and heads on a single HDD. Those heads are what access the data on the platters. In the case of PE, you are asking the heads to be:
    1.) reading the OS
    2.) reading Premiere (your program)
3.) reading & writing the Windows Page File (Windows' Virtual Memory)
4.) reading & writing your media Assets (depending on what you're doing)
5.) reading & writing your Scratch Disk data
6.) reading & writing data for any other Process that requires it
The first step that I'd take would be to add another HDD, and do away with the partition on you Drive0. With two physical (not logical as you have) HDDs, the ideal setup would be:
1.) OS and all programs on C:\
2.) Project, Media and Scratch Disks on D:\
Things would even better, though not to the %, that adding only one additional disk, if you added two. Ideal setup for 3 HDDs would be:
1.) OS and all programs on C:\
2.) Media and additional Assets on D:\
3.) Project and Scratch Disks on E:\
I've also found speed increases by having my Windows' Page File on a separate HDD, but that is overkill, really. Now, I've got 5 internals with 1.75TB of space, so it's easy for me to do this sort of thing.
You have a 200GB SATA HDD (Drive0), and I'd keep that for your C:\ (no partition) and add another SATA in 500GB - 1TB range. If you have SATA II, make sure to go with a new HDD with the exact same connector (SATA, or SATA II). Most on-board controllers can handle 4x SATA channels, so it should not be a big deal.
Most work will come from having to do a complete system backup of your Drive0 (your C:\ & D:\), as you'll need re-partition it. Another way around this would be to leave the C:\ & D:\ partitions, and just move all of your Media, Assets, Project and Scratch Disks to your new physical drive. Keep your D:\ partition, but use it only for storing maybe Audio Assets, that you use infrequently, and the like. Do not partition your new HDD (drive1).
Note on load time: that will speed up somewhat, if you get another HDD, but PE does need time to read it's XML files, that tell it the location of all Assets, then go find them, and verify that they are correct. Only a bit of a speed up there. Almost everything else that you mention, regarding speed, will improve greatly.
Others will have some more ideas, on ways to speed things up, and I'd consider them all, plus the addition of another fast, large physical HDD.
BTW: great post. It is probably the most complete that I've seen in any of the Adobe forums. It's easy to read (good use of paragraphs) and contains all the data, that I could want. I'd hold this up as a model on how to ask a question on these boards.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[EDIT] To let you know, I actually have my Drive0 (500GB SATA II) partitioned (for another reason) and use it just like my second suggestion, re: re-partitioning. My "Movie Music," SFX and minor Assets are stored on my D:\, plus I have my Windows' Page File split over three drives. This after much experimentation. I'd not recommend this, unless you have a lot of extra time on your hands. Just keep it on C:\

This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

Also was working in it today and program stopped responding to key board short cut commands.
