Adobe LiveCycle functionality

Hello,
Is it possible to take an existing PDF that does not have any predefined form fields, alter it to a template PDF file to support field input and automatically fill up the PDF template with values from an XML file?
I think Adobe LiveCycle does this but I just found out about the product, so I'm not sure.
Please direct me to where I can see how this can be done.

Is it possible to take an existing PDF that does not have any predefined form fields, alter it to a template PDF file to support field input and automatically fill up the PDF template with values from an XML file?
Yes It is possible in Adobe Livecycle. Since you have mentioned you are new, I am telling where to start. Adobe Livecycle ES is a collection of different tools that does a lot of functionalities. One such tool is Adobe Livecycle Designer. You can see many examples for how to create a form in this forum or using predefined template using the Designer tool's Help Menu.
Thanks,
Jaison.

• To active Text Formatting function and more tool bars in Adobe LiveCycle Designer 11

I have an original PDF form need to be edited to a fillable form, I can add Text Field into form as a fillable text field into this PDF form in the Design View, however I can not edit any of the text , table and several other Objects. I am an authorized to the Adobe LiveCycle Designer 11 , How can I active my whole tool Bar to edit the PDF file? If the otiginal PDF is locked or read only for the above objects, how can I unlock them?

Hi,
if you import a given PDF file into Designer, it is displayed as background artwork in your form.
Most tools of Designer then will be deactivated.
There is no way to edit this PDF background in Designer, as the kind of PDF you create with Designer is completely different to the one you create with Acrobat or InDesign.
You either can edit your PDF in Acrobat or you have to build a new form in Designer from scratch, I believe.

• Adobe Livecycle Submit Problems

I am using Adobe Livecycle ES. Putting a button on a page to submit the form. However although it appears to save the settings it sends the form to a different address and in a different format. I can even start a blank form set it to email address NEW and submit as XML and when submitting it sends to email address OLD and as a PDF.
Where is it picking these settings up from ? ? ?

Hi All-
I have an extremely frustrating problem. I have designed a form in LiveCycle ES 8.2.1 for users to fill out and submit via xml. I would like to use Acrobat Pro 9.1.0 to track and collect responses from this form. When I test the original form, the submit button works perfectly and it opens my email client (Groupwise) attaches the xml and populates the To, Subject, and Body fields perfectly.
The problem comes when I try to use Acrobat to distribute and track the forms. It creates a filed called 'form_distributed' that adds a bunch of code that completely screws up my form submission. When the form_distributed is filled out, and the user clicks the submit button, Groupwise 6.5.7 is invoked, but I get a 'Check Names' dialog box that states
"Windows Messaging does not recognize "1. Double-click the attachment".
After I click cancel on that dialog box, the JavaScript Debugger shows:
Exception in line 63 of function top_level, script XFA:form1[0]:p1[0]:Button1[0]:click
RaiseError: One of the specified recipients is not resolvable.
Doc.submitForm:63:XFA:form1[0]:p1[0]:Button1[0]:click
===> One of the specified recipients is not resolvable.
The distributed version has this extra code inserted
< script contentType="application/x-javascript">//@@SUBMITURL "mailto:[email protected]?subject=Submitting Completed Form&body=Instructions to add this form to a responses file:\n1. Double-click the attachment.\n2. Acrobat will prompt you to select a responses file.&ui=false"
and further down....
// submit the form
if (bContinue) {
var rawURL = "[email protected]?subject=Submitting Completed Form&body=Instructions to add this form to a responses file:\n1. Double-click the attachment.\n2. Acrobat will prompt you to select a responses file.&ui=false";
var submitURL;
if (app.viewerVersion < 9.0)
submitURL = "mailto:" + rawURL;
else
submitURL = "mailto:" + escape(rawURL);
currentDoc.submitForm({
cURL: submitURL,
cSubmitAs: "PDF"
});
}
Are these lines of code always inserted when the form is distributed?
How can I distribute and track these responses?
Does this tie in to Acrobat.com, and is that required to gather responses in this method?
It seems to be reading
"[email protected]?subject=Submitting Completed Form&body=Instructions to add this form to a responses file:\n"
as the first email address and then getting hung up on the body and interpreting it as an incomplete email address.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Questions regarding Adobe Reader Extensions for Adobe Livecycle.

Hi,
I'm relatively new to Adobe products, having just started to use Adobe Livecycle over the last couple of weeks. I've produced a set of interactive forms for field engineers to use. When completed, they will submit the xml data via email. However, there will be numerous occasions where they will need to stop in the middle of data collection and come back at a later point to finish, hence the need to locally save the information before submission.
I understand this is where Adobe reader extensions would come in, unlocking this functionality.
At the moment, i'm a bit of a loss on several points regarding how reader extensions work and i was wondering if anybody could fill in the gaps:
1. Are they seperate modules that bolt in into the main Livecycle application?
2. As these forms will be used off line, i would like to set the permissions to the pdf locally. From what i read, Reader Extensions is a server product. Is this correct, or can i use Reader Extensions to set these permissions before publishing the adobe form?
3. Where can i get hold of Reader Extensions and how much do they cost? I have been reading information on similar topics on this forum (dating 3-4 years ago) that say reader extensions are comparitavely expensive to a Adobe Pro/Livecycle licence. ($50,000 upwards) Is this correct? If so, is there a cheaper alternative to achieve the same outcome?
I hope someone can shed some light on these points!
Thanks in advance.
Rob

Reader Extensions can be bought as a module in LiveCycle. There is a subset of RE functionality that exists in Acrobat. The ability to save locally is part of Acrobat. In both cases you woudl RE the form before distributing it, hence when the user gets your form they are ready to go. You can download a trial version of the server product. As far as pricing goes you woudl be better to talk to an Adobe salesrep as there are discounts for certain situations as well as different pricing options. If you decide tp gp the Acrobat route you ar limited, by licence, to distribute your form to a max of 500 users.
Hope that helps

• ADOBE LiveCycle Designer 8 - EMAIL SUBMIT BUTTON DOES NOT WORK

I created a new form in Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8, but the email submit button, nor a regular button assigned with a 'submit' function will do anything. It should initiate a new Outlook email but it does not. My default programs are set correctly (default email program and the default "mailto" program are set to Outlook). This document was created not only with ALC8, but on a Windows Vista PC with MS Office 2007. I ran a test to see if it would work on a WinXP SP2 machine with Office 2003 and it still did not work.
Can anyone help?

Alan
Though not an expert, I've created a few forms with the Submit by Email button. If you've already done this then sorry for asking, but did you go through the Acrobat Distribution (Forms>Distribute Forms)process after creating the form in LC8? As far as I can tell the email submit button doesn't work without this stage.
This confirms the email submission address, then sets up a dataset to be saved in a location of your choice.
filename_dataset_0001.pdf
then a file type that can be edited, saved and submitted by Reader users:
filename_pub_0001.pdf
You can save this to your intranet server or email direct to the recipient.
When the submit button is then used you receive a copy of the whole form which on opening will prompt you to add it to the dataset. Receiving and adding multiple forms to the data set is straightforward. You will see them all listed in the viewer above the form itself. From here you can also then select and export the data to Excel via xml or as a csv file.
Note that any changes you make to the form should be to the original document and the distribution process repeated, otherwise the functionality of the form will be affected.
That's about the limit of my knowledge I'm afraid, therefore if you have already tried this and are still having problems then hopefully someone else can help out.
Regards

• How to crop pages using Adobe LiveCycle ES2 PDF Generator and Acrobat 9.2 Pro Extended

Hi all,
I'm evaluating the possibilities of Adobe LiveCycle ES2.0 PDF Generator in order to convert on the fly (programmatically) MS Office Documents and Visio drawings into PDF files.
I'm able to trigger this process using the Webservices API (from within C#). However when generating the PDF files in this way, each and every PDF file has a lot of white margins around it as it is generated as an 8x11 inch page.
I have been looking in ways to crop these white margins from around the information, so that the PDF content is only showing the actual content (in order to be used as an image).
I found a way of doing this manually by opening the generated PDF file of LiveCycle in Acrobat 9.2 Pro Extended and using the Document > Crop Pages... option.
So my question is: Can this be done programmatically using Adobe LiveCycle ES (and/or API functions of the Acrobat tool).
The envisioned solution would run on a server (without interaction/monitoring requirements by a human).
Any input about this is highly appreciated.
Kind Regards,

Can't seem to change the Document Properties > Advanced > Reading Options in a Form that was created in Adobe LiveCycle. This option has been "greyed" out - anyone know how to update this to English so I can pass Accessibility Testing?

LiveCycle forms use a very different approach to create a PDF form than Acrobat and that approach makes many features for processing PDFs non-functional.
You might want to ask this question in one of the LiveCycle product forums.

• Add a New Control in Adobe LiveCycle designer

Hi
I want to have a calculated field in the form based on values of 2 other fields.Now i can easily write a java script for the same and do it.
But what i want is to create a control in the designer such that i just do some drag drop or a choose add function for the calculated field.
Now since this is not provided in the form designer can i write such a control and embed it in the form designer .
This control could be local to my installed Adobe Livecycledesigner.
This is just one eg , there are several things for which i dont want to write the java script again and again and just use a function which will do it for me.
Also i am posting it here as i could not post in the Adobe Livecycledesigner 7.x due to authorization error.
Thanks and Regards
pankaj

Hi Lee,
I tried it as per your attachment but after dragging the object to the Custom Library nothing happens.It is not added to the library.I am using Adobe Livecycle dsigner 7.1.Is it that it is supported in some higher release .Please get back and let me know if there could be some other issue.
Thanks and Regards,

• ADOBE AIR for offline applications or Adobe LiveCycle Designer Offline form

Hi Experts,
I have a requirement of recreating the XK01 Customer Master Creation functionality and host it as online application in SAP Netweaver Enterprise Portal. I have done this by creating a Web Dynpro ABAP application and embedding a adobe livecycle designer interactive forms (having same fields as required for Customer Master creation in XK01). In online scenario, the PDF form opens up in browser. In offline scenario, the user can fill up the form and upload the form using UPLOAD button created in the Web Dynpro application. There has been some performance issues like if we have too many dropdown UI elements in the form (having many entries in each), then the form takes too much time to get uploaded.
Can we think of a alternate solution using Adobe AIR desktop application which will enable the user to fill up the form in AIR like User interface. I am new to Adobe Flex and Adobe AIR.
The online scenario perfectly fine with Adobe LiveCycle Designer Forms and SAP ABAP Web Dynpro application. It's offline functionality where its performance hasnt been up to the mark.
Also let me know if Adobe AIR can be used in the offline scenario while ADOBE forms in online scenarion or is it mandatory to have AIR AND FLEX in offline and online scenario respectively.
Please advise.
Regards.
Rohit

hi,do you still need an answer for this question?
Because Adobe flex and air are very good solutions for a offline and online scenario
Kind regards,

• Memory Leak Problem at Adobe LiveCycle Server 9.0

Hi All,
We want to upgrade our system to 9.0. During the performance test we have found memory Leak problem at ALS 9.0. I explain the detailed problematic issue below. Is there any body who has any suggest?
We have Adobe Livecycle ES2 9.0 SP2 installed on WAS 6.1. But also WAS on Windows Server 2008 R2. We call java web services from .Net Web service for generating PDFs.
On Java side “com/adobe/internal/pdftoolkit/services/javascript/GibsonMemoryTracking” class is causing Memory Leak problem at server.
Our .Net Codes. I copied below. First we generate PDF then we convert this pdf to static pdf.
First We call the GeneratePDF function.
public static bool GeneratePdf(Document document, byte[] pdfTemplate)
try
//Create a FormDataIntegrationService object and set authentication values
FormDataIntegrationService formDataIntegrationClient = new FormDataIntegrationService();
formDataIntegrationClient.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(Settings.ALCUserName, Settings.ALCPassword);
//Import XDP XML data into an XFA PDF document
ALCFormDataIntegrationService.BLOB inXMLData = new ALCFormDataIntegrationService.BLOB();
//Populate the BLOB object
inXMLData.binaryData = System.Text.Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(document.XmlData);
//Create a BLOB that represents the input PDF form
ALCFormDataIntegrationService.BLOB inPDFForm = new ALCFormDataIntegrationService.BLOB();
inPDFForm.binaryData = pdfTemplate;
//Import data into the PDF form
ALCFormDataIntegrationService.BLOB results = formDataIntegrationClient.importData(inPDFForm, inXMLData);
document.PdfData = results.binaryData;
Utility.Log("GeneratePdf", "Pdf generated successfully.", LogLevel.Info);
return true;
catch (Exception ex)
document.ReturnCode = "22";
document.ReturnMsg = "Exception on generating the pdf";
Utility.Log("GeneratePdf", "Exception: " + ex.Message, LogLevel.Error);
return false;
Then We call the ConvertPDF function.
public static bool ConvertPdf(Document document)
try
//Create a OutputServiceService object
OutputServiceService outputClient = new OutputServiceService();
outputClient.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(Settings.ALCUserName, Settings.ALCPassword);
//Create a BLOB object
ALCOutputService.BLOB inData = new ALCOutputService.BLOB();
//Populate the BLOB object
inData.binaryData = document.PdfData;
//Set rendering run-time options
RenderOptionsSpec renderOptions = new RenderOptionsSpec();
renderOptions.cacheEnabled = true;
//Create a non-interactive PDF document
ALCOutputService.BLOB results = outputClient.transformPDF(inData, TransformationFormat.PDF, PDFARevisionNumber.Revision_1, false, null, PDFAConformance.B, false);
document.PdfData = results.binaryData;
Utility.Log("ConvertPdf", "Pdf converted successfully.", LogLevel.Info);
return true;
catch (Exception ex)
document.ReturnCode = "22";
document.ReturnMsg = "Exception on converting dynamic pdf to static pdf";
Utility.Log("ConvertPdf", "Exception: " + ex.Message, LogLevel.Error);
return false;
Our System Configuration:
Expiry date: Never Version: 9.0.0.0,

Service Pack Version: unknown
ADOBE® LIVECYCLE® PDF Generator ES2

SP2
ADOBE® LIVECYCLE® Output ES2

We changed some configuration which is suggested by Adobe. But this change does not solve our problem.
Changed Configurations via ADMINUI
Memory Leak Problem which is viewed via wily tool:

Hi Mahir,
Can you attach the results of this performance test where we can see how GibsonMemoryTracking class is causing the memory leak issue.
Also do you see any stackTrace in the LiveCycle server logs related to memory / heap when you run this performance test ?
Thanks,
Simer

• Adobe LiveCycle ES4 add new and update Access Database, Non-Null failure

I am using adobe livecycle es4 and I am trying to add a new record and then update it to an Access database. However, when i press update the error tells me that i cannot have Null values and it displays a check box field name. How can i allow a null value for a check box? Because when my form is used, not all of the check boxes will be checked

You can use the resolveNode function that can catch the null value of your check box component.
Exemple:
if (this.resolveNode("NameCheckBox").rawValue == null)
//Do Something

• Adobe LiveCycle Forms Versus Adobe Document Services

I've read in the "Best Practices for Improving Performance in Dynamic PDF Forms" that Adobe LiveCycle Forms can explicitly off-load the job of rendering a form onto Adobe Reader.
My question is, "Can Adobe Document Services do the same?" ADS is for users working in a SAP environment but it's suppose to have the same functionality as "Adobe LiveCycle Forms", so I'm hoping we'll be able to do this.

Well, I know it's possible, but I have no idea how you would do it in that environment. You may want to speak to your SAP support guys for that.

• Running Adobe Livecycle on M-Series

All -
We've been having performance issues and stability issues running Adobe Livecycle ES2 on T-series;hence we're doing a POC on M-series. This came after finding out that Adobe LC is not meant to take advantage of the T-series architecture which is more suited for multi-threaded applications. So, as of today our testing on the m-series is looking good.
My concern is, and we're planning of using reader extensions and rights management, is when we expose this to many users.
Is there anyone running on m-series with more than 1000 users and how is that performing?
Welcome your feedback.
Thank you.

Hi Lukasz,
So, the issue here is that you're monitoring the loop rate of your 1kHz timed loop. This loop is made so that it will execute every millisecond, but the DAQmx API are not deterministic function calls. So, because we can't guarantee their determinism, you will see your loop rate fluctuating. As long as your loop is exectuing every 1ms and you immediately call the DAQmx Write function to update the output buffer, this is as close to a solid 1kHz update rate that you'll be able to acheive.
The issue that seems to be coming up with your loop execution rate that directly affects the CPU usage and replenishing of the buffer, is when the execution of the DAQmx VIs in the while loop cannot execute in under 1ms. This causes some delays in replenishing that buffer, which is why the buffer size is dipping and consequently means that the CPU has to work as hard as it can to execute those actions in an amount of time that will satisfy the timed loop.
Another thing that is going to help with this issue, is allocating a larger buffer size than the 1k that you have. This will provide more wiggle room while writing new data to it.
I still think that keeping the event structure in this loop and leaving the "allow regeneration" on will help the performance of this execution because you will only update the buffer when the user (or accompany PID conditions) wants to change the duty cycle. And since the DAQmx API execution is not deterministic within the timed loops, your update rate should as good, if not better, than without the event structure.
Also, another option you have is to simply use a counter output task and only update the duty cycle of that counter output when the duty cycle changes. I would have a look at the two example programs that are available on our Developer Zone Community. Take a look HERE and HERE.
I hope that helps explain things and gives you good options.
