Adobe PDF Printer disappearing after 9.4.2 update

A few hours ago I updated Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to 9.4.2, supposedly coming from 9.4.1.
Since then the Adobe PDF Printer is no longer available among my printer options. That is for all applications: Adobe Acrobat, InDesign, Preview or ArchiCAD 14.
It seems there's a similar issue with the 9.4.2 Windows upgrade (see Acrobat Windows forums). What now? Deinstall Acrobat? Or how do I revert to a older version?!
MacBookPro 2009 (5,3), Mac OS X.6.6.

Ditto...
This is a whole lot of pain  unfortunately. I am sitting here lamenting why oh why did I upgrade?? But then it can only improve right? Whats the harm? Surely this will make things better? After all, it didn't really point out that the Acrobat Printer would no longer be available. I will never again do an upgrade on Acrobat as it has done this  to me before previously and it was a pain to sort out!
Graphics users need the Adobe Acrobat PS Printer as without this we are  not able to set document parametres for print iro commercial printing.  Crop marks, page size, reg marks etc. Which can only be accessed via the  software once the Acrobat PS Printer output option has been selected.
Simply selecting create Postscript file or PDF.... has none of those  attributes and is probably less useful than a chocolate teapot.  certainly not a "Pro" - "Professional" option, but rather meant for the  masses who have basic Acrobat requirements.
I don't really care to get into the realms as to who did what and  whether it was Apples security option or Adobe's upgarde. This outcome  is going to upset a lot of graphics users who have paid good money for  this package as it was originally intended (for the professional with  professional requirements ie PS options) and I for one am annoyed at  software companies changing the rules as time goes on. Its the consumer  that keeps being inconvenienced all the time.
If memory recalls, we have to totally uninstall and reload. But  theres a catch there somewhere if I remember correctly as the  uninstaller does not recognize certain files and if you apply the  reinstall using the older version of Acrobat, residual files from the  newer version create issues. Something like that. Not sure that makes sense to me either. But I remember theres a curve ball there somewhere...
Going to be a long night!
Rule for the future. Don't upgrade.

  • Adobe PDF Printer gone after updating!?

    Good afternoon,
My PDF Printer has literally disappeared after running the automatic update (9.4.4) early this morning.
In fact, the sequence has been like this:
    1. Running InDesign so I keep on working on a project.
    2. Adobe updater pops up
    3. Since I was experimenting random and automatic "pauses" on the PDF printer, I decide it is a good idea to update in the hope this will fix the random pauses.
    4. Work nice as always. PDF creation goes fine, however, random pauses did not go away. Doesn't care too much, at the end it takes only a split second to "resume" the printer back and you're done.
    5. Out to lunch and back
    6. Open same InDesign doc to perform corrections as addressed in client email
    7. Go to print dialog box and... voila! PDF printer is gone...
So, at this point, I go to the printer Apple pref pane and surprisingly, there is NO PDF Printer at all.
Try to add one maually. Worthless, there is nothing to be added. I restart the iMac.
Once back in, try the same. Nothing to add.
Navigate through forums and the web and nothing seems to address such behavior.
I decide to reinstall Acrobat from scratch using the CD. That is, to downgrade. Back to normality. Annoyed, indeed,
So, Has anyone experienced such a thing? Any known solution?
What about the random "pauses" or standby?
    Thanks in advance!!!  ;-)
    Juan.

Thanks for posting Steve, I still have to deep-read these links you provided but I feel like the answer might be there...
Yesterday, in the meantime, I was in a hurry so I just decide to re-install Acrobat from scratch wich blew away the issue.
Seems like Acrobat 9.0.0 does well with MacOs 10.6.1
As far as I have reade in the links, I understand that there will be no more PDF Printer in the future, am I right?
And, I was just wondering, if it is so, we wont have to use Distiller anymore?
Guess I have to invest sometime on this.
    Thanks!

  • Adobe PDF Printer missing after update

Yesterday I updated my Adobe Acrobat 9 software to version 9.5.3 but now my Adobe PDF printer has disappeared. I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bits. I have many documents to convert into PDFs but now I am unable to since the update installed. Please help?

Try repairing Acrobat installation - Open control panel, select Acrobat and chose the option to repair.

  • Windows 8.1 Adobe CS6 Adobe PDF printer broken after sysprep

Windows 8.1 enterprise 64 bit with CU1 installed. Ran sysprep priror to install. Installed Adobe Design and Web Premium CS6 & Premiere Pro CS6. The Adobe PDF printer is working with UAC enabled threw all PC accounts. Ran sysprep (standard generalize, skip rearm, & skip all win 8.1 questions) with UAC disabled since bat files will not run with UAC enabled. After UAC is enabled you can't print using the Adobe PDF printer unless running from Administrator account or by disabling UAC. We also have Adobe CC except the instructor is currently teaching CS6 suites. I tested acrobat 10.0.0 & 10.11.1 same problem after sysprep.

Have you tried running Process Monitor to see where the permissions problems are occurring?

  • Adobe pdf printer disappeared

I have installed CS5 and Acrobat a year ago an it have worked OK. Then a couple of month ago my pdf-printer dissapeared from the printer list. I fixed it but I don't remember how I did it. and now the printer have dissapeared again. Can anyone help me?

    Open Acrobat and run Help>Repair.

  • Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

I have Acrobat X Standard, but dowloaded XI Pro for 30-day trial. After the download, Adobe PDF Printer disappeared from my printer options.

That shouldn't even be possible: Standard and Pro are mutually exclusive. Not surprised it has broken.
    My recommendation
    a. Make sure you have your Standard serial numbers and install media.
    b. Uninstall the one you don't want at the moment.
    c. REPAIR the one you do want.

  • Now I can't print to the Adobe PDF printer

At the same time I started having problems updating Acrobat (see my post yesterday, please), my Adobe PDF printer disappeared from system preferences. I've added it back using the help>repair option, but the printer no longer works.
Every time I try to print, the printer pauses, then when I restart it and try to resume the document I get an error...
    Operation could not be completed
    Client-error-not-possible
I've done a complete uninstall/reinstall of the whole Design Standard CS3 suite 3 times now, including removing my prefs and serial number (so starting from scratch), but this error, and the Acrobat updating problem, won't go away.
Please can someone help me on these?
    Thanks, Nige

Try going to Printer Utility and deleting any reference to the adobe Pdf Printer Driver.
Then you find file anlocate all versions of PDF Printer. remove all traces of version Previous to this version.
Now open Acrobat and got to help menu repair and replace and have it repair the Printer Driver again.
Note: PDF Printer does not work within Acrobat nor Reader. only with other applications. (Or at least I've never been able to have it work within Acrobat/Reader.)

  • Cannot print to Adobe PDF printer from Word after upgrading to Win 7 64bit

Hi. After upgrading my operating system from Windows XP to Windows 7 64 bit, I can no longer print to the Adobe PDF printer (e.g. from Word). It just sits in the Adobe PDF printer queue saying "Error" without bringing up the "Save As" dialog box, and nothing happens. I am running Adobe Acrobat 8.0.0 (I've checked for updates but it says none are available). I have tried doing a repair installation following the instructions on this website (http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/error-file-adobepdf-dll-needed.html) but to no avail.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I think it's time to upgrade. 64-bit systems weren't much in use at the time of Acrobat 8.0.

  • Adobe PDF Printer is no longer available after an update

To better understand the steps that have lead to this:
I tried to print a corrupt PDF to a smaller page size (didn't know it was corrupt until then). After quite a while Acrobat crashed with an unknown exception. From this point on Adobe PDF never asked for a file destination again and did not create any more PDFs through the Adobe PDF Printer.
I uninstalled the Printer and re-installed. Nothing changed: No destination file dialogue, no PDF created. So I uninstalled it again, and also uninstalled Acrobat. Re-installing from the Master Collection DVD didn't work (installing took about 3h and then simply cancelled), so I re-installed the whole Master Collection.
Adobe PDF printer was gone. And only seen when I again re-installed but did NOT update all the programs.
Now I have updated the Master Collection again, and the Adobe PDF printer is gone. And nowhere to be found again... anyone knows what could have happened?
Oh, I'm running Snow Leopard of course...

the problem is that save as Adobe PDF does not work from the printing dialog ( Saving a PDF file while printing is not supported. Please choose "File" > "Save as".).
There's also the problem that by saving as Adobe PDF, I cannot choose the output size of the file if I'd want to rescale a PDF (for publishing purposes). Is there any way to work this around?

  • Adobe PDF printer and "Start printing after last page is spooled"

    Hi,
After calling the Belgian Support for Adobe Product, I'm trying to have some information here.
    Hope to get some help.
We use acrobat pro XI on windows 7 client and when we print a test page with the "adobe pdf" print queue on network share, we get a printing error when the "start printing after last page is spooled" is selected in the advanced tab of the printer queue. (document is not generated, and stay in the spooler with an error).
This problem is not present if printed localy or when we use the "start printing immediately" or "print directly to the printer".
The support agent from adobe Belgium told me that the reason is generating adobe pdf on network share is not a supported operation. We have to save the document localy all the time.
Is it really an answer from Adobe ?
Do you have an other explanation ?
    Thanks for your help,

Thanks for your very good explanation Dov.
We use Adobe livecycle for this kind of purpose.
The situation described is diffrent, but you completely repond and I will be able to have some element to find a solution.
In fact, I'm implementing a softwate called DeviceLock, used to control connected devices (usb, network, drive). But this software, once installed, change the local printer parameters from "print directly to the printer" to ""start printing after last page is spooled".
As we use redirected folder in our environment and users cannot use local drive (for user's data backup) you will understand the problem.
Of course, we should be able to force the correct settings back, But Devicelock seem to change this settings after policy refresh.
I have contact with Devicelock about this problem of course as their software modify the settings, but was looking for a reason why we were not able to use the "start printing after last page is spooled" parameters with adobe Printer.
    Thanks for your explanation,
PS:The driver's dialog won't prevent you from setting “Start printing after last page is spooled” or “Print directly to the printer” but setting either of those options will cause the operations to fail as you note.
note that only "Start printing after last page is spooled" cause an error and this, only for network share location. The "print directly to the printer" or the "start printing immediately" work fine either on a local drive and a network share

  • Adobe Pdf Printer stopped working after update to Acrobat DC

Hello, I have installed Acrobat DC yesterday. Since then, Adobe Pdf Printer stopped working. It always gets stuck at Checking Fonts and any software the print originated from just hangs and I have to force it closed.
I tried uninstalling the printer and installing it manually, repairing Acrobat installation but nothing changed.
So, can somebody help me? Thanks.

A method which is written here not working - because if you start to remove the fonts one by other you will see that the list does not end there.
    I did so
    1. i copied the folder with the fonts from the other clean system and replace with fonts in my system
    2. then i restore the registry tree HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts
    3. i check system with sfc /scannow
after these procedures Distiller DC continue to crash...
In this time distiller crashed when it cheking their fonts in C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe\Acrobat DC\Resources\Font
after i rename the folder from Font to Font_ in order to he did not check this folder
at next run Distiller crashed at the font wingding.ttf after remowing that font he crash at Vrinda.ttf (this is a oficial font of Win7 and come with him) after removing that font distiller crash at the next font name of Vani.ttf (this is a Win7 font too) - when i saw it goes on forever i back my system to normal status and uninstal Acrobat DC and back to Acrobat XI...this version work with out any problems.
We are waiting a hotfix to resolving this problem with Acrobat DC

  • Adobe PDF Printer No Longer Available After Acrobat X Install

I've been using Acrobat 8 Pro for several years. To generate PDFs, I use the Adobe PDF printer (through FrameMaker). I recently installed Acrobat X Pro. Now there's no Adobe PDF printer. Save as PDF doesn't work (no PDF generated). I need to get the Adobe PDF printer back but cannot find any information about how to install it. All the Acrobat Distiller help has to say is that you should use the Adobe PDF printer. Not helpful at all.

    Good day,
I'd like to see if I can help you.

Then I cant do the one thing that it should do from the get go, create a PDF!
Did the Adobe PDF Printer install with your trial?
What application did you author the file in that you'd like to convert to PDF?
Did you print your file from that application to the Adobe PDF Printer?
And to correct and continue to evaluate the "TRIAL" version I must delete the working version of software so that the "TRIAL" Version will be able to create a PDF!!!!(30 Min)
And if I don't like the "TRIAL" version I have to Reinstall the Original.
    (30 Min)
Do you mean that you had a previous version of Acrobat (such as Adobe Acrobat 8 or 9) installed?
If so, this is not surprising as we do not support multiple versions of Acrobat installed on the same computer.

  • Printing from Appleworks using Adobe PDF Printer

I have a large number of Appleworks files to convert to PDF. At the moment, I open the file, do a command-p, choose PDF, then "Save as PDF". This method works fine. I would like, however, to automate the process, and doing so would be much easier if the Adobe PDF Printer would print with the expected settings when I click the "Print" button. Is there any way to make this happen? It seems strange that it is not the default behavior, considering the fact that the PDF printer is only a virtual printer, and would never be used to print to paper.
    Peter

I have a g5 running Tiger. I updated my profile after posting my original question.
The "Save as PDF..." button works, but not the button on the right that says "Print". It is important to me to be able to use that button, because it forces the application to print to the Adobe PDF virtual printer.

  • How do I deal with "Acces Denied" error when trying to print to Adobe PDF printer driver

Windows 7 64 bit OS (updated)
    Adobe Acrobat XI (11.0.06.70)
I am unable to create a PDF file from within the Windows 7 print dialog.  Each time, I receive a terse "Access Denied" error followed by the display below (the progress bar never advances).  I thought upgrading to Adobe Acrobat XI might fix this but no such luck.  It seems that others have experienced similar issues.  I noticed in the display below that Adobe is trying to create the file in a folder which does not exist (at least I can't see it even after setting my preferences to display hidden files).  I have the hope that, if the folder were present and accessible, Adobe would create the file without trouble.  Is there a way to instruct Adobe Acrobat XI to create this temporary file in a different location?  One of my frustrations is that I used to be able to print Adobe Acrobat files without trouble on the same computer.  I wonder whether the use of a registry cleaner may have contributed to my problem.
What are the best practices for addressing the Access Denied and inability to print problems I've encountered?
Thanks for any help you can provide in sorting out this problem.
    Best,
    Matt

I have been having the exact same problem with Adobe Acrobat X.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times and applied all the latest updates.  Every time I try to print ANTHING to the Adobe PDF print driver, the software hangs (MS Office, webpage, or other programs).  When I finally kill the process using Task Manager, I find the little "Access Denied" box.  This has been happening for nearly one year.  I have limped along since I have other computers to use.   I have attempted to find answers on this forum in the past, and no one seems to have a clear answer to the problem.
I, too, was tempted to upgrade to XI, but Matt's post settled the matter, since it did not help him.
I am using Win 7 Home (64 bit) and until this issue started, I have had no problem with AA X.
