Adobe Photoshop CS3 & Paging Out (Screengrabs)

I have a 2x 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon mac with 5GB of RAM. Running latest OSX. Lately, have been noticing slowdowns and, when using the Terminal, have been seeing a lot of Pageouts.
For the screengrabs below, I had a fresh restart, and opened 5 layered Photoshop files in Photoshop each at about 100MB in size (dragged from Finder, not using Bridge -- Bridge was not open). As they opened, the Pageouts remained at zero. Right after they all finished opening, I saw the pageouts steadily climb to the number in the screengrab. I wasn't doing any other activity... and the number just kept climbing, and then stopped.

Also is a screengrab of my Photoshop performance settings. Is this common behavior? Suggestions on some remedies to try? Thanks.

Ann,
Thanks for the link. Lots of good information & housekeeping tricks to try there.
Buko,
My scratch disk is barely touched. I watch it and it barely takes a hit. It works fine and is proportional to my needs. I'll experiment with it. Are you referring to a FAQ in the forums? I'm willing to read it, although there's mixed messages out there re: RAM and scratch. I don't contest the need for a scratch, but RAM is key to efficiency...
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401089&sliceId=2
Installed RAM
The amount of memory Photoshop requires depends on how you use the program. If memory is insufficient, Photoshop uses hard-drive space (that is, a scratch disk) to process information. Photoshop is fastest when it can process all or most image information in memory, without having to use the scratch disk. Watch the Efficiency Indicator to determine if you are operating as efficiently as possible.
To check memory use in Photoshop, open the Efficiency Indicator: Choose Efficiency from the pop-up menu on the status bar of your image to display the percentage of time actually doing an operation instead of reading or writing the scratch disk. If the value is below 95-100%, Photoshop is using the scratch disk and, therefore, is operating more slowly. If the efficiency is around 60%, you'll see a large performance increase by changing your RAM allocation or adding RAM.

Even more content out there now on the home page of PhotoshopNews.com

I haven't been able to download CS3 yet, but the Martin Evening pdf (thanks for the link!) has what looks like a piece of great news buried in it:
"For example, before you first had to create an empty new document with the exact pixel dimensions before you could place an image (such as a raw file) as a Smart Object. With Photoshop CS3, you can now place a raw capture file as a Smart Object layer in a single step."
If I understand this right, it means that the functionality of the old Dr Brown Place-a-Matic script is now available from Aperture. We can -- or this makes me hope we can -- send a RAW from Aperture to PSCS3 for editing, and then Place the same image, perhaps twice, as a Smart Object, edit away, and when we Save get the whole edited image back in Aperture without going through the Finder.
I used to use this (from Bridge) all the time to double-expose RAW shots: adjust the sky to one exposure and the ground to another, masking to get both into the final image, all without messing with the pixels of the RAW image. I've missed it. Whoopee.

i have switched from PC to Mac how do i use my windows version  of adobe photoshop CS3 on my MAC?

    rebel1568,
All Photoshop versions through CS6 came with platform-specific licenses, either Windows or PC.  You could get a cross-grade of platform swap at a nominal cost but not for older versions, only for whatever Photoshop versions was current at the time.
CS3 is totally out of the upgrade or cross-grade loop.  You'd have to buy a new license for CS6 Mac or subscribe to Photoshop CC, as Trevor points out.
Curt Y is correct in that CS2 will not run on current Mac-Intel machines.  You would need a used Mac G5 or G4 with a PowerPC (IBM) CPU, which have been obsolete since mid 2006.
Of course, you could run your Windows  on your Mac if you installed and ran BootCamp or Parallells.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended Activation Problem

Hi all, hoping someone can help me.
I have a legitimate hard copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended which was only recently taken out of its sealed package.
On installing and trying to activate I get an error. Now i am left with a window telling me "Registration Unsuccessful"
Any ideas how i can go about solving this? I legally own this copy and I need to use it and can't do with it deactivating.
Thanks in advance for any help given. It's very much appreciated!

Mordynak I am sorry but I find no software titles registered under the Adobe ID/e-mail address you used to post to this forum.  From this discussion it sounds like you have already utilized the process listed in Find your serial number quickly.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 crashing at open file screen

    Hi all
I've searched online but can't find a relative discussion or solution.
I have Adobe Photoshop CS3. My system is Windows 7 and it's 64-bit (that's about as far as my hardware/technical knowledge goes...).
The problem has only started happening today. Open PS, and go to FILE>OPEN. A sub screen is opened. On the left of this sub-screen are a variety of short cut locations such as 'My Documents', 'My Pictures' and 'My Computer'. Clicking on any of these shortcut tabs results in PS crashing.
The only thing I can think of that has changed since the last time I used PS CS3 on my machine (and I use it daily) is the following:
Installed trial version of Autodesk AutoCAD LT 2014
From this, to watch a Flash video of AutoCAD demo I had to download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player (it was 2011 I believe).
Following the CS3 crashing problems I uninstalled Flash player and re-started but still no luck.
    Have not touched AutoCAD yet.
Any thoughts / comments? My company is looking to invest in AutoCAD so CS3 will need to learn to live alongside AutoCAD (IF AutoCAD is the problem, but I think this is unlikely).
Let me know what you all think!
    Thanks
    David

    Thanks for all the replies.
We (myself and our company IT guy) just tried several of the above, plus some other things.
    1. Shift/ctl/alt reset preferences. Did not solve the problem.
    2. Video driver upgrade. Did not solve the problem.
    3. Complete reinstall of CS3. Did not solve the problem.
    4. Install old video driver (apparently this solved a similar problem in another area of the company). Did not solve the problem.
    5. System rollback/restore (to 20-11-2013 settings). PROBLEM SOLVED!
We have a suspicion therefore that the Autodesk AutoCAD LT 2014 may be something to do with it. We will find out later/tomorrow as I need to get some stuff done in CS3 now (can't afford more lost time!).
Will update once we have reinstalled AutoCAD LT 2014 as to whether this changed anything.
    Thanks again
    David

    > but the part about DNG has convinced me to dive deeper in it and give it a go
When working in a Bridge/Camera Raw/Photoshop workflow, I tend to ingest the actual native raw files, do initial selects and gross edits and basic metadata work via templates and THEN do the conversion to DNG. I'll use the DNG as my working files and the original raws as an archive. I tend to do this more with studio shoots. I tend to use Lightroom when I'm on the road.
When working in Lightroom first, I tend to ingest and convert to DNG upon ingestion (when in the road working on a laptop) while using the backup copyusually working on a pair of external FW drives one for working DNG files and 1 for BU of the original raws. Then, when I get back to the studio I make sure I write to XMP and export the new shoot as a catalog and import into my studio copy of Lightroom. Then I'll also cache the newly imported images in Bridge as well so I can get at the image either in Bridge or Lightroom.
It's a bit of a chore now since I do work in Camera Raw a lot (well, DOH, I had to to do the book!) but I also keep all my digital files in a Lightroom catalog which is now up to about 74K...
Then, depending on what I'll need to do, I'll either work out of LR or Bridge/Camera Raw...
If I'm doing a high-end final print, I generally process out of Camera Raw as a Smart Object and stack multiple layers of CR processed images...if I'm working on a batch of images I'll work out of Lightroom since the workflow seems to suit me better.
In either event, I've found DNG to be better than native raws with sidecar files.

  • Start a newline in a textblock - Adobe Photoshop CS3

How do you start a new line in a textblock in Adobe Photoshop CS3? When I press enter, it simply accepts the text changes I've made. I have found that I can create a new line by copying it out of another program (i.e. - Notepad) and pasting it into the text block in Photoshop, but this is quite a pain. Is there a way to make the enter key create a newline?  I've tried Shift+Enter, and every combination of Ctrl/Shift/Alt+Enter I can think of and nothing will create a newline. Is there something I'm missing?

If you have this problem, i guess a good way to geta round it is to tunr off Hyphenate option in the paragraph panel, and instead of just clicking anywhere on screen to start typing, click and drag out a text box roughly the right size. When then typing gets to the end it will automatically goto a new line like in any word processing application. This will work for most things, but other than that if you want something a bit more specific, you'd have to move each word around indervidually.

I've noticed this message from you several times, John. Often in cases like this where there is a possibility that another user has had the exact same problem, and thus might have an answer.
I suggest that you shorten your message to "You may need to contact Adobe for help, and the following two lines" which will seem less naggy.

  • Adobe photoshop CS3 versus adobe photoshop lightroom 2.3

I already own adobe photoshop CS3. Is it worthwhile to get adobe photoshop lightroom 2.3? Is it easier to use?

You can check out some of the free Lightroom tutorial videos here
    http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/lightroom/articles/lir2am_videotutorials.html
to get a sense of how workflow goes in Lightroom, and what Lightroom can do. I also agree that taking the free trial is going to give you a better sense of whether Lightroom will meet your specific needs than any answers you'll get here.
Lightroom is considered to be more newbie friendly than Photoshop. All arts editing programs, as far as I'm concerned, if they're any good, have a learning curve to master the features, and Lightroom is no exception, but LR's learning curve does tend to be less steep than Photoshop's for many users.
Many forum members who do have extensive experience with both programs have posted here that they now do the great majority or all of their editing with at least most of their images in Lightroom. Photoshop still has things it can do that Lightroom cannot do or cannot do as well, so it's not uncommon for people to post here that with an image that needs something exceptional, they'll still go over to Photoshop and put in some heavy duty editing time there. Adobe has made bouncing back and forth between the two programs easy. But often with Lightroom, you can make an image quite good with just a minute or two of edits, once you quickly get the hang of the program, and it offers many advantages in organization of large blocks of images.

  • Screen Flickering in Adobe Photoshop CS3 and CS4

I experience screen flickering in Adobe Photoshop CS3 and CS4 when I move my mouse around on the screen. Basically any mouse movement will create flickering. The more and faster I move my mouse the more flickering occurs.

    - ASUS Rampage II Extreme Mobo

    - Corsair 1000Watt PSU
    - CPU and both GPUs are water cooled

    - ASUS 26" LCD VK266H monitor (1920x1200 @ 60Hz) DVI
    - I have the latest BIOS and all of the most up-to-date drivers installed for every piece of hardware.
I have photoshop set to use the maximum allowable amount of memory. The memory slider in photoshop maxes out at 3.25GB which equates to about 50% of my total system memory.
The screen flickering does not occur in any other application or game, only in Photoshop. I have tried every possible Nvidia Control Panel setting for this application, and nothing seems to have an effect on the flicker.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem, or any recommendations?

Aside from the potential SLI issue, you might want to study your Logitech mouse driver.
Going back a bit, several versions of the MS InteliPoint mouse driver caused just what you describe. I have not heard of this with Logitech, but did have some other issues with their SetPoint drivers. In my case, I ditched their keyboard, but kept the mouse (love it), and did away with SetPoint, using the generic driver. All functions that I needed were handled, and SetPoint was out of the equation.
Something else to look at, and good luck,
