Adobe Photoshop Scratch File

Hi Guys,
I just installed Adobe Photoshop and when trying to start the application I get this error (Mac OS X Lion):
"Could not open a scratch file because the file is locked or you do not have necessary access privledges. Use the 'Get Info' command in Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders"
I closed Photoshop, and attempted to start it again, this time holding dow the Command + Option buttons. It opens the Scratch Disk Preferences Dialog and it shows that the First Scratch DIsk is set to "Startup". I tried changing that to Macintosh HD and click 'OK' but I still get the error & the next time I open the dialog its back to startup. 2nd, 3rd,and 4th are all none, so I left the 1st as Startup and tried changing the remainder to Mac HD but same thing, error and then they all get reset to none.  I tried deleting the prefences file and starting again and its no fix.
Suggestions?
Thanks and Merry Christmas!!

Mozes724 it does still sound like you are running into difficulties with your disc permissions.  I would recommend posting your inquiry into the Photoshop forum.  They should be able to direct you to the correct folder to modify permissions on.

  • Adobe Photoshop Scratch Disk Full/Startup Disk Full error - PLEASE HELP

    Dear ALL,
I have started to notice recently that when I run Photoshop CS on my Mac OSX Tiger, I am getting the Startup Disk Full error message. Never happended before.
Since my initial post I downloaded Macaroni (utility) and have run the daily/weekly/monthly backups, checked the /private/var/vm and /private/var/log and /Volumes. Nothing unusual there...
When I started getting this error I had 32GB left on a looked at my HD and I seem to have 32GB available on a 152GB drive. Now after deleting I have 76GB capacity left.
But when I tried to open a Photoshop PSD or TIFF file and do a crop I still get tge Startup Disk is Full error followed by the Adobe Photoshop error Scratch Disk is Full.
I am thinking of running the Disk Utility from the Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and doing a Verify Disk and Verify Disk Permissions followed by Repair Disk Permissions. I will be logged into the machine whilst doing this. Is there any danger in this as I have read elsewhere that I need to do this from a bootable volume. If that is the case how do I create a bootable disk/cd? If not then what is the cure to my Disk Full as surely there is now nearly 50% FREE!!!!!
    Please help.
    Max

PS will always use the boot disk for scratch to some extent even with an alternate primary scratch disk.
Be sure to turn off Spotlight as it causes problems.
4GB of RAM would be nice, I understand small files don't work well if there is more than 4GB RAM but large files will. OS X uses free RAM as cache and RAM disk before using disk drives.
How much RAM is allocated to PS? More RAM would help.
A dedicated lean boot drive helps. Install just what is needed for your work, use a separate drive for data, and yet another RAID volume for scratch.
When in doubt, backup with SuperDuper, and do an erase and then restore. Always backup before repairing; and never, ever, use an old version of Tiger CD/DVD - like 10.4.2 on 10.4.7/.8. Use "fsck" instead, or your emergency boot drive.
Also, give Applejack a shot and delete the cache folders and swap files from time to time to keep a system humming. CS/CS2 and Tiger benefit nicely from more RAM.

  • Repairing damaged adobe photoshop .psd files?

One of my project folders got deleted in a freak accident. I won't go into it, but I recovered one of the .psd files using a commercial undelete program (Fast File Undelete from DTI Data). It didn't work (go figure) and whenever I try to open the .psd file photoshop (7.0) shows a message box that says, "There was a problem reading the layer data. Read the composite data instead?" When I click the Read Composite Data button another box shows that reads, "Could not open '[file name]' because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop."
It seems kind of like it is very close to working, because there is even a thumbnail. I also recovered a handful of .jpg's and .tga's, which are also broke. Does anyone know of a utility that could attempt to repair a .psd, .tga or .jpg?

    SECOND FREE SOLUTION:
Sometimes Photoshop is adding a few bytes in the beginning of the file when the file is saved, and then the same Photoshop is giving an error and complains about that files... All you have to do is to delete that unnecessarily group of bytes.
Assuming that you already know what is a HEX editor and how to use it I'll write here a few steps you can do before opening a "corrupt" PSD file:
1 - Make a back-up (copy) of the file before making any changes.
2 - Open the "corrupted" file in an usual HEX editor (NOT text editor!) and look for such groups of character just in the beginning: 8BPS and after a few bytes 8BIM another group of bytes and again 8BIM.
3 - This succession should be respected strictly: 8BPS ... 8BIM ... 8BIM. These groups should be very close to each other and it's easy to find them.
4 - Delete all bytes before 8BPS group (Shift+Delete) and save the file... =)
5 - Open it in Photoshop and Enjoy.

  • How do I save an adobe photoshop cc file for photoshop touch and still retain the layers?

I want to continue working on my .psd image in my wacom cintiq companion hybrid, but it only has touch and when I open the photoshop file there, the layers compress. What do I saw it as so this doesn't happen?

I am not sure whether this is what you are looking for but:
Cmd+Opt+Shift+E will add a composite (flattened) layer without affecting the layers that created it.

  • Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file? at startup / Tools act strangely. (Mac Os 10.6.5, 10.6.6)

Symptoms: Every time you start Photoshop, you receive the prompt to confirm the deletion of Photoshop's preferences, or
Photoshop tools act strangely, as if a modifier key was held down all the time: you can only draw straight lines, you sample colors rather than paint/fill, the cursor has a + sign, etc.
AND: You are running Mac Os 10.6.5 or 10.6.6.
Solution: Update to Mac Os 10.6.7:  As explained in http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/881/cpsid_88159.html
Apple had made a change in 10.6.5 in one of its APIs that affects other programs (Photoshop does not use it), and the result is that they interfere with Photoshop, that receives information that modifier keys (CTRL, Command, Option, Shift) are pressed, when they are not. Adobe reported the bug to Apple, but it was too late to be included in 10.6.6.
    The solutions are
    a) Upgrade to 10.6.7
    b) An Adobe Employee has made an unofficial interim fix for this bug. You can download it and have more information on this post: 72.
This is one of those cases where Photoshop has the symptom of a bug, but the cause of that bug is not in its code.
Note that the post to reset the preferences or reset the tools to their defaults when they are acting erratically is located here:
One of my tools is behaving strangely. How do I reset it?

Sounds to me like Adobe was probably relying on undocumented behavior in the CGEventPost routine. Apple is free, of course, to change undocumented behavior of any of their system APIs all they like, since you're not supposed to be using such things. Developers are supposed to stick to the documented behaviors in the APIs. If they don't, they can try to save face as Adobe is by blaming Apple, but the fact is, it's not Apple's fault, any more than it's my fault if someone picks up a flower pot from my front porch and misuses it by throwing through someone else's windshield.
As Barbara has observed, sounds like a case of Blame-Displacement Syndrome.

  • Can Adobe Photoshop CS6 files open in CS4

Is it possible for me to open CS6 files to CS4 in photoshop

There can be some capability problems. CS6 has features that did not exist in the CS4 time frame.  If you saved normal image files like Jpeg, PNG, Gif etc they should be OK.  However layer files like Tiff, PSD and PSB can have problems. If PSD and PSB files were saved with the max compatibility option some incompatible layers may be added as raster layers so most of you work will still be usable.

  • Photoshop cannot open files in the "Adobe Photoshop JPEG file" format

Strange intermittent issue on Mac, 10.6, CS4. Anyone know what happens to standard image files that makes them so PS cannot open them?
    Thanks
    ~AC

Check your file name closely.  If you have illegal characters it could make them unreadable (dashes, dots, slash, etc.)  Also, set OS to show extensions and make sure you have not lableled it xxxxx.jgg.jpg.

  • Photoshop CS5 opens and says "Adobe Photoshop CS5 has stopped working"

Hey guys.. I hit this problem tonight after trying for several hours to open Adobe PS CS5.
Photoshop worked earlier today and i have made no changes on my PC since running PS again.
    I am running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64bit
I have tried Pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ALT to delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File with no success.
I have rebooted my computer several times.
    I have ran as administrator.
As far as I can tell it has something to do with KERNELBASE.dll
You guys are my last chance.. THANK !

  • [Error] Auto make off Adobe Photoshop CS6

    Hello,
I have very irritating problem - When I doing something in Photoshop and I use Open function and then click RMB on any file, my Photoshop automatically make off.  I don't know why, but earlier I do not have this problem.
    Can you help me ?
    Best regards,

    Try resetting your Photoshop Preferences.
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"

  • Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended

    Hi
    Can anyone solve the following.
I went to use Photoshop this afternoon - having used it quite happily on my MAC for the last 12 months and got the following dialogue box:
"Could not initialise Photoshop becasue the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted)" Then an 'OK' button. When I select the OK, nothing happens and I cannot open Photoshop.
I have uninstalled, reinstalled fromthe original PS disk  and rebooted - still nothing!
    Any help would be great!
    Nannatang0

Next time you attempt to launch Photoshop, Try the following:
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
Note: If this process doesn't work for you while you're using a wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard, attach a wired keyboard and retry.
In the extremely unlikely event that doesn't fix your issue, try deleting the files manually as follows:
Preferences files vary by name and location for each version of Photoshop. Use this document [CLICK ON THIS LINK] to find or re-create preferences files for Photoshop CS6.
mportant: If you re-create the preferences by deleting the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings file, make sure that you only delete that file. If you delete the entire settings folder, you also delete any unsaved actions or presets.
Reinstalling Photoshop does not remove the preferences file. Before reinstalling Photoshop, re-create your preferences.
NEW Video! Julieanne Kost created a video that takes you through two ways of resetting your Photoshop preferences. The manual preference file removal method is between 0:00 - 5:05. The keyboard shortcut method is between 5:05 - 8:18. The video is located here [CLICK].
    Mac OS
Important: Apple made the user library folder hidden by default with the release of Mac OS X 10.7. If  you require access to files in the hidden library folder to perform Adobe-related troubleshooting, see How to access hidden user library files [CLICK THIS LINK].

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 and 'Save for Web' problem

    Hi everyone,
I have used Photoshop Elements 2 for some time with absolutely no problems. However when I try to use the save for the web option I get an 'export could not be completed due to a program error' message.
Nothing relevant is mentioned on Adobe's support site. After having gone through the usual 9 troubleshooting procedure I suspect that there is a problem with the 'Save for Web EL' plugin located in the PE 2 plugins folder. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way I can somehow find a functional plugin?
Thank you for reading this post.
    PowerBook G4 DVI 667   Mac OS 9.2.x

I don't use Photoshop elements myself, but from Photoshop CS it works fine. I use JPG compression and optimization. First of all - make sure the file format extensions are all available. Applications/adobe/photoshop elements/file formats AND ALSO Applications/adobe/photoshop elements/photoshop elements only/file formats (here I am assuming the paths are the same or similar to Photoshop). Also, check the extensions disabled folder (Control click on Photoshop and go to package contents). If it's none of these, I suggest you check the settings in Elements when trying to save and make sure you are not using an option that conflicts.
Also, check the Adobe forum. http://www.adobeforums.com
    Check for software upgrades also.
You do have enough hard drive space and RAM I assume. If you are using PS Elements and virtual memory is on, you may not have enough phsyical space to save the file (but not likely)
P.S. I see (after i wrote) that you are running 9.2.2 - so the paths will not be the same as if it was on OS X - but they will be similar.
