Adobe Premiere Elements 12. Scratch disks are write protected or unavailable'  Help

Thank you for your help....
I'm Mac based with iMac that is about 3 months old, 8GB ram and 1 TB disk.   OS 10.9 Maverick.  I have a Lacie Thunderbolt 3TB as my main disk and a 4TB Lacie for back up...
a.  When I create a New document I select where I want the scratch disc to be directed, I add the content and make edits, save the file and then render it.  The rendering goes all fine to where I have directed it.  As long as I do NOT quit the project or close the project I can create Blu-ray,  DVD's, .mov files and all.
BUTTTTT  if i quit and reopen that file I get these two alerts first alerts says "The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable." the second comes up whe I go to render "Invalid Scratch Disk path for video previews.  Please change it to some other location."
I can not do anything because it can not render or can not write to disks so I can not make DVD's or data files.    Could it be OS 10.9?.
FYI I have redirected my scratch to the internal Mac drive and same problem.
See enclosed attachements.
That is where I'm at.  Is it a global thing on my internal, exteranal HD's, OS 10.9 or what.
Any ideas?
Jim

  • "The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable" on NEW project on PrE

I am running PrE 10 on Windows 7 64 bit.  My computer has two internal hard drives (C and E).  I want to put my projects and all scratch disks on E, the non-OS drive.  When I try to create a NEW project and designate a directory I have already created on E, I get the following message from PrE 10:
"The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable..."
The program won't let me use E.  However, when I check the drive, it HAS created a .PRV directory in the Preview Files directory and a .prel file in the Encoded Files directory.  So it is actually able to write to drive E.
    What gives?  Thanks.
    Jon

    Thanks, Bill and John.
I am running from an administrator account, but I wasn't running "as administrator."  I had already changed the permissions to give everybody everything.
Here is what I discovered.  Running "as administrator" made no difference.  So I ran the program "normally" again.  Then I discovered that although the program was giving me the "The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable..." message, it was actually setting things up properly on my E drive.  When I continued to use the newly created project, the correct directories and files had been set up on my E drive, and I was able to direct my captures to that drive as well.  I haven't done much work on the project yet, but it appears to be working just fine so far.
I just now created ANOTHER new project on the E drive, and PrE did NOT give me the error message.  Everything got set up properly.  Hmm.  It looks as if that message it put out in error, or, at the very least, unhelpfully!
By the way, what is Encore, and how would it play a part here?
    Thanks.

I appreciate your help with this problem.

Removeable drives do cause problems when the program tries to find files
That is why I always copy all video files to my data drive before starting a project, so the files stay in one place
My 3 hard drives are configured as...
    1 - 320Gig Boot for Win7 64bit Pro and all program installs
2 - 320Gig data for Win7 swap file and video project files
3 - 1Terabyte data for all video files... input & output files (*)

  • Adobe Premiere Elements.exe - no disk

I purchased a copy of Premiere Elements 11 in April, I installed it on my laptop and it worked fine. I just purchased a new dell desktop with windows 8, I uninstalled it on my laptop and installed it on the new desktop. When I tried to create a quick movie I recieved and error that reads "Adobe Premiere Elements.exe - no disk, There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive D:"
I contacted Adobe Support, after everything was said and done. I was told that the dll files on my install disk were corrupt and that I needed to upgrade to a new version for the mire sum of $150.00. Has anyone else run into this ?

This error seems to be related to SmartSound. Have you ensured that Smartsound and Sonic Fire Pro are properly installed?
You can download them directly from this page. Just download the free trial of Sonic Fire and you should be all set.
    http://www.smartsound.com/sonicfire/downloads/
You'll also of course want to make sure that Windows 8 is fully updated and that you have the latest version of Quicktime, per the program's requirements.

I am getting a bit concerned about what is happening in your situation. Yesterday you posted your question in at least two different forums, one of them being here in the Premiere Elements Forum.
Don't Have Serial Number for Premiere, Only Photoshop?
Wherever you posted, the reply was to contact Adobe via its Adobe Chat. It is the only one who can sort out this matter for you.
In the thread cited above I offered to help you with the difficulties that you were having visualizing the Adobe Chat in its web page. I was waiting for your follow up on that in the above thread. Instead, I find your same question in a new Adobe Premiere Elements Forum thread this afternoon with no refer the prior threads or prior recommendations given you.
I will also mention again...when you buy the Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements bundled in one packaging and with installation files for each on the same installation disc, each program has its own serial number. The Photoshop Elements serial number does not work for Premiere Elements and vice versa. The serial numbers are on labels on a box which houses the installation disc envelope(s). So, if you purchased both programs and found the Photoshop Elements serial number, then the Premiere Elements serial number should be in a label right underneath the label with the serial number for Photoshop Elements. I recall writing this in your yesterday's thread on this matter.
The moderator will no doubt be along shortly to close or delete this thread. So, just in case, please bookmark your yesterday's thread cited above so that we can continue this communication which is trying to help you.
    Thanks.

What you describe is a known issue with Premiere Elements 13/13.1.
Adobe has given us the fix which appears to be deletion of the OldFilm.AEX file.

Was there something extraordinary about your Adobe Premiere Elements 11 preferences?
It is interesting situation...maybe a coincidence, but 11 was typically hit with No Disc message, and
most of the time the problem was related to SmartSound which was discontinued in versions 12 and 13.

  • Why do i get the message about scratch discs are write protected

I recently bought Premiere Elements 13.  It worked fine until yesterday.  I suddenly began getting the message about "scratch discs are write protected..." and I have not been successful in learning how to correct this.  I have checked online only to have so many varying "solutions" that it is confusion. I tried a couple with no luck.  As it stands, I can't be sure where to find the files since they aren't going where I had them.  It is very frustrating!  This appears to be a common problem but what is the method to eliminate it?  Thanks.

On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 13 running? Have you updated 13 to 13.1 yet from an opened project's Help Menu/Updates?
How do you have the project's Scratch Disks set up currently - for each, location and amount of free hard drive space at the location?
Please see Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks. https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-elements/using/scratch-disks.html

What are you doing in the project when you get the message about the Scratch Disks?

It sounds like you downloaded the wrong application, namely Adobe Premiere Elements.
If you meant Adobe Photoshop Elements, you're in the wrong forum.  This is not the Elements forum.
Here's the link to the forum you want:

You are right. The No Disk error issue of Premiere Elements 13 was not addressed in the 13.1 Update. Have you see the thread that

if you have a problem dl'g, you didn't follow all 7 steps.  the most common error involves failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).

  • I down loaded Premiere Elements. When I start the program a box pops up saying Adobe Premiere Elements.Exe- No Disk . Please insert disk into the drive

Can anyone help me with this issue?

    Thanks for the reply.
The uninstall and reinstall has been known to be successful in some cases, but I would not do that with using a free ccleaner run
through between the uninstall and reinstall.
The full suggested scenario would be
    1. Uninstall the program using the usual Control Panel way.
    2. Do a free ccleaner run through to get rid of leftovers from incomplete installs/reinstalls.
    CCleaner - Download
    3. Reinstall the program with the antivirus and firewall(s) disabled.
Also, before starting the above, go to the Task Manager/Processes and determine that there are no Premiere Elements 13 or Elements Organizer 13 processes open. If found, do End Process for each found.
Depending on the results for the above, we might then try deletion of the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs File for 13 and, if necessary, the whole 13 Folder in which that Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists.
We will be watching for your results.

  • Premiere Elements 4 Scratch disk error / clips off line

    Hi,
I am a new user to Premiere Elements 4.0. I have just started teaching Media Studies and am attempting A Level coursework, and am having numerous problems.
    1. We have been editing for some time. Today, when trying to access a project (all projects are stored on a designated drive of a school system), a notice popped up saying there was a scratch disk error and the project could not be opened unless the scratch files were put in the My Documents section of the school system. What does this mean? Is the project lost to us for good? I have a copy saved on an external hard drive and the same message popped up.
This occurred after editing successfully earlier in the morning.
    2. Projects which will open are appearing with all the clips offline. Where have they gone?! We have changed nothing since our earlier editing session today.
    3. In the earlier successful editing session, one group tried to capture some new material. All the new clips they saved appeared as being offline, and then their existing clips went offline one by one.
    Any advice / suggestions?
Thanks you so much to anyone who can help explain this.
    Sarah (In Panic!)

  • How do you move Premiere Elements files (scratch disk) when upgrading OS

    Hi,
I have just upgraded from Windows Vista 32bit to Windows 7 64bit.
I had to uninstall Premiere Elements 7 to deactivate, so I could reinstall, however now when  I open all my projects it says media offline, please locate. I thought all my scratch disk were set up to 'same as project' but can not seem to locate the files in the same folder.
I have hours worth of footage captured through Premiere, any ideas where I will find this captured footage, or the file type at least so I can search my computer? I have all my old folders etc saved in windows.old folder that is created when you upgrade OS, so it must be in there somplace???
    Please help!!!

I use a pretty simple setup for my Projects, also grouped by client. The exact layout will depend on whether I will be doing all of the editing on one machine, or will be migrating from computer to computer, via a FW-800 external. After that decision is made, my scheme looks like this:
    Root folder = Client Name
         Sub-folder = Project Name
    beneath these, I have:
              Videos
              Stills
              Music
              Audio
              SFX
              Capture Files
              Finished AVI's
              Finished AC3's
              and all Scratch Disks
For ultimate performance, one could separate out the Scratch Disks, and maybe even all Video and then all Audio, to separate HDD's, but this method keeps things neatly together, so that the entire Project can be deleted, when done - just delete the Project folder, and all of the sub-folders will go with it.
If I will be migrating, this layout will be on the external, which has had its drive letter assigned in the OS of each computer, so that it appears the same in each. If no migration, then these will be placed on an internal, probably E:\ on any of the computers.
Good luck, and glad that you found your "missing" files,
    Hunt

  • Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 Scratch Disk Anomoly

Okay, I ran into an odd problem.
I have a 1TB firewire external drive that I would like to use as my main scratch disk.  Every time I try to set my SDs to that drive, through both the capture window and through the Edit>Preferences menu, I have problems.  At first it told me I didn't have permission to write to the drive.  I think I've fixed that.  But now there is an error during batch capture.  It says there was an unknown recorder error.
This most recent time I logged 3 clips and set it to batch capture.  One clip, the final one in the group that I logged, captured with no problems.  But the first two didn't capture.  I tried to re-batch those two and in the capture window, where it displays the remaining disk space as it captures, it read that there was only 4.0 GB of space available, and within a minute it gave me the recorder error message.  I've got almost 900 GB open on that drive.  What's the deal?
And I am confused as to why one clip out of the three captured successfully.
Can anyone shed some light on this?  Any help is much appreciated, this project deadline is coming up soon.
    Thanks,
    BLG

    BLG,
Is your external a FW-400, or FW-800? Is it formatted NTSF, or FAT-32? If FAT-32, you can easily Convert (Windows Help File) it to NTSF.
I do not Capture to my externals, but do use them for all other Scratch Disks, and Project files.
Last, is both your camera and your FW external on the same controller chip? That can be a major problem. I'm not talking daisy-chaining, which is worse, but 2 devices on the same FW controller chip.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
