Adobe PSE 5.0 Control X , Magic Wand, Lasso Trouble

I have Windows XP. When editting a photo, I suddenly can no longer undo a task using only "Ctrl X" on a photo in the Editor workspace. It shows it is undoing the task in the photo bin photo and in "Undo History". Now, the only way for me to undo a task is to press "Ctrl X" and then "Enter", or use the mouse to click on the "Undo History" taskpane. How do I get back to having to use only "Ctrl X" to undo? Also, the Magic Wand and lassos do not have 'marching ants'. They seem to be 'frozen' when I use them. Would someone help me with this, please?

Thanks, Barbara! It works again! Also, it 'reloaded' my missing "Artworks and Effects", which would have been my next question. Your instructions were clear and the key word which shed light on the subject was "it"...referring to the editor. I had been quitting and starting up the whole Adobe PSE 5.0 program, using those keys during start-up, only to find a list of catalogs.
Thanks for your quick response!

  • Adobe PSE 8 with Windows 8

I have Adobe PSE 8 on our laptop with Windows 7 but we got a new laptop with Windows 8 and my software won't load on the new laptop.  I'm wondering if I am doing something wrong or if it isn't compatible.  I don't mind upgrading to Adobe PSE 13 but am concerned I will have trouble with all my existing PSE files.  Please advise.

    Hi,
I can't be certain, but I can't see any reason why PSE 8 shouldn't be compatible with Windows 8.1.
Do you get any error message when trying to install PSE 8?
If you were to upgrade to PSE 13, there should not be any problem with your existing files. It would be best to use the organizer's Backup Catalog to hard drive on the old computer and then the restore catalog on the new computer. That way both the catalog information and the photos will be transferred across.
I suggest that you make sure that there are no missing files in your current system.

  • Adobe Creative SDK - Twixt magic wand functionality

Hello Creative Cloud community, this is my first posting here I hope I picked the right forum for my question. I want to create the magic wand feature as seen in your Twixt app using the Adobe Creative SDK. I have been searching everywhere in your documentation, and I just don't' know where to start, which classes to use and what is the general approach.  It would be great if I can get some pointers. Thanks!

As far as I know, each program has a different SDK

  • Magic Wand problem in PSE 8 - unexplained gaps in selection

    Hello,
it seems that recently when I select an area of a shot using Magic Wand (MW) and create a Layer with the selection, there are unaccountable partially missing "see through" bits where I can see some of the check fill pattern through the selected area.
I have been using PSE 8 for a few months and I have never noticed this before but perhaps I was not looking hard enough. MW also seems to be using tolerance settings a bit differently but that is not easy to demonstrate - it just seems that with a given tolerance it takes a lot more Shift-clicks to eliminate spots inside the desired area and still some remain, though feathering seems to clear them away. I often select an area by building it up with a lot of Shift-clicks and usually decreasing tolerance values as I go, also using Alt-clicks to remove unwanted inclusion. Until now once all the "ants" were eliminated from inside the desired area I could then feather it and with Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V achieve a layer with no discernible holes. (I usually feather with Refine Edge rather than the Feather option because that way there is no fade off where the edge of the shot is selected.)
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing these gaps?
    Thank you,
    Nick Sergeant

    Thanks, Terri_F and hatstead,
following your suggestions I have just experimented with all six combinations of Eyedropper (ED) and Magic Wand (MW)
ED = Point Sample, MW with/without contiguous checked
ED = 3 by 3 Average, MW with/without contiguous checked
ED = 5 by 5 Average, MW with/without contiguous checked
These setting do make a difference but the MW select is always leaving out at least a few stray pixels. But the problem is not a show-stopper as I may have a work-around (below)
I think ED= 5 by 5 with MW contiguous was the most reliable for picking up almost all of a clearly isolated area of colour. Even that setting leaves some stray pixels out for some reason but nothing serious. All other settings seem to leave holes in the area selected despite no sign of them during the selecting.
I ran some settings more than once and despite this systematic approach it seems I can never get quite the same result twice. I'd expect the edge of the selected area to fluctuate a bit each time, but I also still get little few-pixels-sized holes well inside the area seIected, which spread out of course if I feather.
I think what I am seeing looks worse than it really is because tiny groups of a few pixels each left out of the select will expand when feathered and be quite an eye-sore. So from now on in these cases, if necessary I may work-around by Select > Modify > Expand for one or two pixels in order to capture stray pixels, and then feather. I tried it once and it seemed to capture all the stray pixels without compromising the select outline too much.
    Thanks for your help,
    Nick

  • Magic Wand tolerance adjustment box

When i'm using magic wand there isn't a tolerance box to adjust or contiguous tick box. Just a sample all layers / auto enhance tick box and the refine edge button. I can't control the area it selects and i end up with a straight boarder selected around my image. I'm using photoshop CS3 and running on snow leopard.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Adobe PSE 11 installer defaults to the "uninstall" routine.

I’m trying to install PSE 11 from a downloaded < Adobe_PE11_T1.zip >.  Preferring a “clean” installation, first I uninstalled PSE 10 (Windows7 Control Panel / Programs); however, PSE 10’s program folder did not delete.  So, I deleted it manually, then ran Adobe’s <adobe_creative_suite_cleaner_tool>, and selected “All.”
Now, unzipping and installing PSE 11 causes the installer to default consistently to "uninstall."  I’ve performed cold boots between each step, and repeated the entire process with identical results.  How do I "reset" Adobe for a clean installation?

Dell XPS 8100, x64-based; Intel Core i7 CPU
BIOS: Dell A03, 12/9/2009; RAM 8.00 GB; Virtual Mem.: 15.9 GB

Since you deleted PSE10 program files folder manually, it might create some issues. Please restart you system once and then look for any residues of PSE10 in program files\adobe\ and try installing PSE11.

  • Magic Wand won't select CS5.5 OSX

Was working on a file that is very intricate, going back and forth with shortcuts from the wand (W) to the eyedropper (I) and I must of hit something because now my magic wand won't select any of the fine details in my file, when I click it selects the whole artboard, no matter what layer I have selected.
Restarted and trashed pref with no help. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
    I am on OSX

    adobekilledourindustry wrote:
Solved my own problem. In all my shortcutting madness I must of hit "Q" and the file went into Quick Mask mode, which made selections non existent. Took quick mask off and now its working like it should.
In old versions this used to turn your screen pink. Not sure why Adobe thought it would be smart to take that feature out, but thank you Adobe, I just wasted an hour of my life trying to figure out WTF happened.....
I see your point. It makes sense that the whole image should be overlayed with ruby in QM mode when nothing at all is selected. (And if the preference to invert the behaviour is enabled, the whole image should be overlayed when all is selected.) It fails in CS6 on OS X 10.6.8. Please repair this, Adobe.

  • Magic Wand Selection Tool Fails to Operate on Precise Pixel Color

I had an interesting thing happen with Photoshop CS5...  My Magic Wand tool got to where it wasn't selecting pixel colors based on the one under the tip of the tool when clicked.  It was selecting what seemed like similar colors, but its operation wasn't really predictable.
It turns out that in a prior unrelated operation (days ago) I had changed the color picker to look at a very large number of pixels when sampling.
Having chosen the above, the setting was sticky and modal (meaning it subsequently affected samples taken from then on by a variety of tools).
I didn't think that this should affect subsequent samples taken with the Magic Wand tool.  I'm not sure this has always been the case, but it doesn't seem as though it should work this way.
Notably I don't see any way, while the Magic Wand tool is active, that the above sample size can be changed.  Nor did Resetting the Magic Wand tool correct the situation.
Should the previously selected color picker sample size actually affect the Magic Wand tool, or is this a case where someone at Adobe consolidated the pixel sampling logic a bit too aggressively?
If the latter, here's an adage to post in the halls of Adobe Engineering:  "Make everything as simple as possible, but no simpler."

Hm, appears to be an old issue:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/3226358
What I can't fathom is that it's never bitten me before.  I do tend to leave the eyedropper on 1 x 1 pixels, but I occasionally do sample larger regions.

  • Coloring issues with magic wand tool and paint bucket tool, leaves uncolored areas near drawn lines

Photoshop CS6 doesn't color properly.  Whetever I use brush tool or elliptical marquee tool to do the lines (with brush tool I use Hard Round, not soft), it doesn't color the whole area when i fill them with color. This happens with both magic wand tool AND paint bucket tool, there is always a small uncolored area near the lines. I have tolerance on 30,  and anti-alias, contiguous and sample all layers boxes checked. (this setting worked on my old CS3) I have tried tolerance from 0 to 100, no difference. I have also tried unchecking the boxes I just mentioned, still no difference. I hope there is a solution for this, because it is tedious to always go to the Select - Modify - Expand every time I need to color some area. So how do I fix this problem? I use seperate layers for lines and colors, like I have always done with other Photoshop versions. Even in school where they have CS5 those normal settings work.

    Hello Chris,
I don't think this is a "user error". I think Adobe should be able to program a state of the art paint bucket, which is capable to get this done right.
Other applications are able to get this done right.
Please don't fall into a programmer's ignorance ("this is done right by definition") but listen to us artists and improve this unintuitive behavior. Add something like "ignore transparent pixels", because this doesn't even work if you draw on an empty layer.
    Thank you!

  • Selecting pixels on a layer using the magic wand

    PS CS5
I have been trying to select individual pixels around a shape on a layer to create a mask to hide the semi transparent pixels but i cant seem to select individual pixels to add to the selection.
In some places along the path of the object I have been able to select some individual pixels, but in other parts, groups of pixels automatically get selected or even the whole path is selected.
How do i control this? I want to be able to only select the pixels i choose and not groups.
The settings i am using are:
    Tolerance = 0
    Contiguous - Selected
    Sample all layers - Selected
I have tried doing this with each of the following settings to no avail:
    New Selection
    Add to selection
    Subtract selection
    Intersect with Selection
I was following a tutorial on the lullabots website to create a mask but can't reproduce the steps because of this problem
    http://www.lullabot.com/articles/creating-awesome-new-icon
    thanks in advance

One setting that you haven't listed and which can affect the Magic Wand tool is the Sample Size.
Activate the Eyedropper Tool, then right-click somewhere on your image.  Make the sample size Point Sample.  This will then tell the Magic Wand or any other tool that does an "eyedropper sample" operation to use the value of the single pixel you click on to gauge its operation.
I mention this because the coupling is modal and sometimes overlooked.

  • Photoshop CC missing Magic Wand Tool

Hello! I've got the new Adobe Creative Suite for Student and am working with Photoshop CC at the minute but cannot find the Magic Wand Tool anywhere... is it not in this version, or is it hiding somewhere... can't locate it. Please help?

    Look in your Tools:

  • Magic wand too sensitive

Recently upgraded to CS3 (from CS1) and suddenly I'm finding the magic wand tool worthless. It's way too sensitive. If I try to use it to select just the contiguous black part of my image, for instance, it's selecting almost the entire image, everything from black all the way to 50% values or less. This is with my tolerance setting at 2! It was never like this before.
Is there a new default setting somewhere that's causing it to sample from a larger area, maybe? When I'm clicking on the black area, is the wand sampling everything in the vicinity and trying to select everything in that entire range? Whatever it is, how do I change it? Tolerance has absolutely no effect on what it selects, now. The tool is simply of no value the way it's working now.

    Thank you SOOoooooo Much!
The eyedropper tool connected to the wand? How would I know that?
Is it really that hard to add it's own drop down to select the selection size.
Adobe, if you read this, listen. The amount of excise to switch tools, change that setting, then come back to the tool I was just on is not worth the 10min saved during implementation to only have one drop down for this.
You basically invented the adaptable toolbar with butcons, please, please use them.

  • Automatic whole object selection with lasso or magic wand tool.

Here I have a circle pattern, all the fills are the same, all have the same appearance,
when I try selecting all the internal scattered objects with the lasso tool, it only partially selects them, its slow getting around their borders while trying not to select the outer ring of objects, using the selection tool on this radial design is difficult, as when you select some pieces you deselect others, I was hoping for an option whereby you could tick a checkbox for the lasso or magic wand tool to "select whole object" when you run the wand or lasso over those objects. At the moment the lasso tool only partially selects based on which nodes you encircled.
I cannot select the outer ring (would be just as difficult with selection tool) and use inverse because there are many other objects on the page also, I could have created the inner circle on another layer initially, but had not, in this situation a small enhancement to the magic wand or lasso would be good for selecting whole objects. When using experimental design approaches we don`t naturally pre plan every step or idea from the beginning.
the other option is to select them all with lasso, the group them, move them then ungroup, but again just looking for the one step opportunity as it seems simple enough.

Agreed. I think an "Grow" and "Grow All" option in the Select menu is the best way to achieve that. (Maybe Adobe can come up with better naming)
"Grow selection" would increase the selection by one anchor point in each direction for each partially selected path.
"Grow All" would select all the anchor points of each partially selected path.
For example, if you have 1 point selected on a circle, "Grow selection" would add the 2 adjacent points to the selection for a total of 3 points. "Grow All" would select all the points on the circle.
Another related feature would be an "Add to selection" option in addition to the "Save selection". And why not a "Substract from selection" option? You'd simply select a few points, choose add or substract and choose which saved selection to modify.
A lot of the selection toold work at the object level, not at the point level, like Deselect/Reselect/Inverse. This can be frustrating.

  • Magic wand tool that will select broken-line shapes?

I'm an illustrator... working in both digital & real artwork.
I work mostly in Photoshop CS, but I have been searching for a solution to a digital problem that I can't quite seem to find using either Photoshop or Illustrator.
What I wish to do is scan a pencil drawing and then create selected shapes in a quick and easy method using a magic wand tool.
But it needs to be a magic wand tool that will select an area drawn from a series of broken lines. Photoshop will only select shapes that are 100% intact, so I wind up having to spend lots of time searching to repair broken lines before Photoshop selects just that one area.
I KNOW that such a program exists... because I recall there used to be such a program. It was a free dowloaded program that I got once, way back around 1998. I think it came from Australia... and it was a basic digital paint program of some sort. I can't recall the name.
It allowed one to quickly click and select an area from within a shape drawn with broken line segments...
Does anyone know of any program (hopefully for Mac) that allow this sort of selection?
This would save me hours of frustration. I can't believe Adobe hasn't come up with something like this already.
    Thanks...

I doubt that I will get to trying the proposed method on that sample image this weekend. I can make a few quick comments, however.
Like numerous Photoshop tools, the success of Illustrator tools like Live Trace and Live Paint are very image dependent and some experience helps. Here are some comment on the three steps needed.
First, the Live Trace step must be done well. There are a boat load of parameters for this process. For the subject image my guess would be to start with a preset and the one I would choose would be comic art.
Secondly, once you make a live paint group you have to have automatic gap detection checked (turned on) and you choice of predefined or custom gap sizes specified. You will then see where the gaps are automatically found and fixed and the gap options dialog box will tell you how many have been found. If you like what you see you can just start painting. Usually, however it is an iterative process of painting some of the areas and then resetting the gap detection and painting again. At any point you can automatically close the paths (but you cannot go back), change the settings to auto detect even larger gaps and try again.
Third is the manual phase. If lucky you will have none of this. On the subject image, however, I can see that some of this is required. To preserve the artistic content of the original one draws a line in the very big gaps having no stroke or fill (invisible line)and then you use the live paint bucket. While the above sounds like a lot of work, it can go very quickly with many drawings.
    JN
    >That's why I think Adobe ought to work on designing a 'smart magic wand tool'... that could select imperfectly closed shapes.
The Live Paint tool in Illustrator does this. It automatically detects gaps and lets you paint as if they were not there.

  • Adobe PSE 8 + Epson Stylus Photo PX710W - Cannot Get This Combo to Work

    Hi All
Apologies for length of posting but I am really at the end of my tether with this. I should say that prints from this printer have not impressed me even from when I first received it about a month ago when I was printing from Epson Easyprint software. They looked washed out and not at all vibrant and I was using Epson inks and papers. However things got a whole lot worse when I started to use PSE8 which gave prints that were far darker than those on screen. Interestingly the best prints so far came from me simply inserting my SD card directly into the printer this morning but obviously that gives little-to-no control over manipulation.
So, if somebody could help me I would really appreciate it. Here are my latest settings:
    Snow Leopard 10.6.4
Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core Duo
    Epson Stylus Photo PX710W
    Adobe PSE 8 (Mac)
Note that I spent the whole of yesterday working on this to the stage where I uninstalled and reinstalled all of the Epson stuff. I also consulted the following link (and related links) and downloaded the latest Mac Updater from the Epson US site.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10609503
My latest print driver from the Epson CD is showing as version 6.61
I also loaded Epson ICC profiles
I have calibrated my monitor using the Eye-One display 2.
When I print in PSE I am choosing:
Colour Settings: Always Optimise Colour for Computer Screens (I chose this because my photo file is showing as sRGB)
    Colour Management:
Colour Handling: Photoshop Handles Colour (I disabled Printer Colour Management in another menu)
    Image Space: sRGB IEC61966-2.1
Printer Profile: SPPXTX 810 710 Epson Glossy
    Rendering Intent: Relative Colorimetric
I truly hope this is a case of user error on my part so all advice welcome. Or just let me know if oyu know of a better printer:)
    Many thanks
    L

I also had enough with Epson Stylus Photo PX710W... I am buying a new printer. I have tried everything to make it print from photoshop nice vivid colors, if you consider i am using a very well calibrated monitor special for video editing. i used also Dekke settings for Colors and are not even close to the original when printed and i can't seem to figure out whats the problem. I disabled printer color management and let photoshop handle it. I tried Adobe RGB, i tried Epson Standar bla bla bla... I searched the subject very deeply as to inform everybody before posting anything that i have no problem with my videos whatsoever. I have tried numerous settings (almost all photoshop could offer) and have consumed a lot of ink and printed thousands the same picture to compare the settings and wrote with a marker on it each times the combination of settings that i did. Not even close... I realized only one thing just to also let others know and get them out of trouble... Epson Stylus Photo PX710W + Mac = Disaster! Good for windows yes, but buying a Epson Stylus Photo PX710W for your Mac? FORGET IT! I'm throwing it to the waste bin or i will just give it away to someone for free.
