Adobe purchase online

On feb 10 I paid $20 for waht I thought was a program to allow me to convert PDF files to word.
Did I buy the wrong program OR does Adobe expect me to pay another $23 ?? Whitrav

I think the "Welcome to Adobe" message comes from registering with Adobe. We now need to be precise about what you did buy. You say "Adobe is a free program", well actually Adobe isn't a program at all. Adobe are the maker, and make many things. Some are free (e.g. Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player). Many are not free. Some are subscriptions (pay monthly or yearly) and some are one off purchases.
So, you should, as well as a "Welcome to Adobe" message have a receipt. If you don't seem to have one, sign in and look at My Adobe on Adobe's web site, it may tell you.

You can download and install Acrobat 10 from : http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html
and then use the purchased serial number to activate the software.

and activate with your serial number.
if you have a problem starting the download, you didn't follow all 7 steps, or your browser does not accept cookies.
the most common problem is caused by failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).
failure to obtain that cookie results in an error page being displayed after clicking a link on prodesigntools.com or initiates the download of an incorrect (eg, current) version.

Unfortunately, this is a problem that is driven by the DRM Dictatorship. Despite the proliferation of mobile devices and the fact that there are many of us who do a lot of international travel, content providers don't want you to have access to their products outside of your homeland. The Balkanized mentality of the DRM Dictatorship is way out of touch with the modern world.
At least Apple, to its credit, allows you to use your accounts outside of your homeland as long as you have the proper credentials for them. Most other services use the more Draconian geolocation filtering which does require you to be physically present in your homeland. For the most part, you are not allowed to leave home if you want access to your favorite entertainment!

I have been getting errors for about a week when trying to convert a PDF to a word document. In Acrobat I get the error "File failed to be converted using Adobe ExportPDF Online" and when online using ExportPDF I get a conversion failure.
Please help.

Does it occur with all files or a specific file?
Are you trying to convert from within Reader or from Browser?
If from Reader then make sure you are signed in within Reader, also try updating Reader to the latest v11.0.09 and check.
If from Browser then have you checked with a different browser if possible?

I also tried to download the .exe one, but as expected when I double click on it, I have an error message that confirmed Windows is not supported.

I'm sorry that you're having trouble with ExportPDF. Can you please tell me a bit more about what's going on, so we can get to the bottom of the issue?
What browser are you using? Have you tried clearing the browser cache?
Are you converting from within Reader, or directly via the ExportPDF website?
Are you able to convert other files? Or is the error specific to this one file?
How large or complex is the file that you're trying to convert?
Are you accessing ExportPDF from a networked computer that may have firewall/proxy settings that are limiting access to the Internet?
I think that's good for starters. Please get back to us with some detail about the problem and we will see what we can do.

This error can occur when you log in via Adobe Reader. Please see: "Error occurred when trying to access this service" when logging on to Acrobat.com
If updating Reader doesn't resolve the issue, please log via a supported web browser.

I am considering purchasing the new iMac, and live very close to a retail Apple store. Any advice as to advantages and disadvantages of purchasing online vs. at the retail store? Cost? Customization? Support differences? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

One major advantage to purchasing online is that you can forgo the sales tax of your state, which can be pretty hefty depending on the model you purchase. However, one distinct advantage to purchasing at an Apple Store is that you have a local "advocate" in case you have problems with your computer. Yes, any authorized dealer will help you deal with warranty issues (including the Apple Store); however, if you get a lemon, the Apple Store will probably give you a new one and they might be more inclined to help in general. The Apple Store will also take returns (minus a 10% restocking fee). Most mail order places won't take returns on Apple products.
So, the bottom line is that it might be cheaper to go with an online retailer, you might get better customer service by going with the Apple Store.
