Adobe Reader 10.1.3 crashes on open?

Has anyone found a cause for frequent Adobe Reader crashes with version 10.1.3 on a Mac with OS X 10.6.8?
The issue has been reported in the Acrobat forum but I haven't seen it mentioned here.
For me, the problem occurs about every third time I try to open a file --  sometimes it will occur five times in a row and sometimes I can open several files before the problem recurs.  It almost always happens just after the Adobe splash screen goes away and the file starts to load.  Sometimes I will see the first page of the document before the spinning beach ball of doom indicates that things are about to go horribly wrong.  When I try to reopen the file that caused the crash, it usually opens the second time.  Neither file size nor content seem to be a factor.
The crash report (as with everyone else's who's reported the problem) shows:
Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000007
The system log refers to a segmentation fault.
Reader never gets far enough to issue its own error message.
On this computer, I have been using every release of Adobe Reader since version 9-something without incident -- up to, and including, 10.1.2.  Reinstalling has not solved the problem.  It just seems that 10.1.3 wasn't so much "released" as that it escaped prematurely.

I don't have that issue with an up to date Mac OS X.7.4. Try a new user. If it works, then you have a corrupted preference file. If it still doesn't work then get the Onyx utility. Have it remove all your cache's, then restart and see if that helps.

  • Adobe Reader XI launches, but crashes upon opening any file

    Environment:
    Acer Aspire 5750Z
Windows 7 Home Premium; Service Pack 1
    Intel Pentium CPU B940 @ 2.0GHz
    4.0 GB RAM
    64-bit OS
I can Launch Adobe Reader XI. It displays its home screen.
However, upon opening any PDF file, the program crashes with the following messages:
"Adobe Reader has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem."
    followed by:
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. [close program]."
This occurred with prior version as well.
    I uninstalled Reader.
I freshly installed the new version.
    The problem remained.

Try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Adobe reader 10.1.2 crashes when opening pdf

I have a user with windows XP pro ,  Just recently she tries to open pdf's in outlook 2003 and it crashes. When it does the error reporting it comes up with the windows error that there is a newer version and to go to the adobe web site to down load it. I have the newest vesion installed. Wonder if installing older version would work.
    Thanks

I am also experiencing the same problem using Outlook 6. I have also un-installed and re-installed adobe reader, which worked for a day but now it keeps hanging after about 10 seconds.
This problem has only occurred since March 2012. Any help or solutions would be welcome.
    Cheers

    Hi,
Could you please let us know if you are using any 3rd party plugin for Adobe Reader? If so, can you please temporarily remove the same and see if you are facing the same issue.
If you are not sure about the same, please do the following:
    1. Navigate to the Reader installation folder. Usually its C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0
    2. Ensure that Adobe Reader is not running and delete the entire "Reader" folder
    3. Initiate a Repair transaction for Adobe Reader from the Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Also, it would be great if you could let us know if the issue is PDF specific or does the issue happen with all documents. Do you observe the same issue with the below mentioned PDF as well:

    Thanks

  • Adobe reader 10 and 11 crashes after 3-5 sec.

adobe reader 10 and 11 crashes after 3-5 sec. it newer gets fully opened, it just closes. the problem is all my pdf files on my computer. and they work fine on my other labtop. tryed to repair, remove, install many times

Can you try this next: navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader (if you have Reader XI installed), or C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader (Reader XI on 64-bit Windows), and double-click on Eula.exe, then accept the license agreement.
    Does that fix the problem?

  • Adobe Reader 10.1.X crashing due to message.zip CERT update

We had a number of customers reporting Adobe Reader 10.1.X crashing 30 seconds after opening a PDF in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.
The issue occurs when Adobe phones home to download:
    http://acroipm.adobe.com/10/rdr/ENU/win/nooem/none/message.zip
Which look to be CERT updates.
Block this using whatever filtering software or create a dummy DNS zone and the issue goes away.

If the above would also fix (or circumvent) the isse, the same would be achieved with these registry settings
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\IPM]
    "bDontShowMsgWhenViewingDoc"=dword:00000001
    "bShowMsgAtLaunch"=dword:00000000
I will ask a user in the forum who still faces the isse to test it.

  • Adobe reader 6.0 app won't open because PowerPC apps are no longer supported

I can no longer open .pdf files on my newer imac which is over 3 yrs. old,  This issue seemed to have started sometime after updating to icloud & Lion??  on this imac but for some reason, I do not have the same problem on my other imac that is running the same Lion v. 10.7.2 which is over 4 yrs. old.  I can see that the older imac is running Adobe Reader 9.4.6 and opens .pdf files.
Here is the error message I get on my newer imac:
adobe reader 6.0 app won't open because PowerPC apps are no longer supported
I don't remember if or when I started having this problem on the newer imac but it use to open .pdf files.  Nor can I find any reference to ANY Adobe Reader version other than 6.0 on this computer,  Even after several tries and downloading off the Adobe web site using Safari.
I have made several attempts to download off the adobe web site using safari which shows it is downloading the app. but cannot find it anywhere on my computer's HD or Desktop even when using Spotlight to search for it.
In fear of screwing up my new 17" MBP which arrived yesterday I have not attempted to transfer any info/files/data off of my other imacs due to they info dating back to the PowerPC days that transfered during switching to newer mac models.
Thanks for any help in this matter
    Bob

I have tried several times to update the Intel Mac verision of adobe but cannot find where it was downloaded to on my computer.   When I do a search on my computer, the only version that is found is the old 6.0 Power PC which is no longer supported.

    Hi noswam123,
If a PDF file is password protected, the only way to open that document is with the password. You will have to get that password from the person who created the PDF.

  • Adobe reader 10.1.2 could not open the file '/C/WINDOWS'

since adobe reader 10.1.2 urls don't work in pdf files to folders.
    C:\WINDOWS\xy.xls
    ok
    C:\WINDOWS
not ok > adobe reader 10.1.2 could not open the file '/C/WINDOWS'
    C:\WINDOWS
ok > with deactivated protected mode
no problems with 9.5.0 or 10.1.1 with activated protected mode
is that known? any other workaround?
    thanks

    Hi,
I also have Reader 10.1.2 installed on my machine and I also cannot open a link in the PDF, that will eventually call an exe file. I don't think that there would be different behaviour on your machine. So, I think, now this is the expected behaviour Reader 10.1.2 onwards.

  • Adobe Reader X Help Menu won't open

Adobe Reader X Help (F1) will not open.  The message I receive is:  "Online Help content cannot be displayed.  Verify you can launch your web browser and have access to the Internet."
    WinXP SP3
    no antivirus installed
    IE 8/Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13
    Protected Mode Enabled and Disabled
    Any ideas?

Reader X does not ship with a help function other than Internet-based help.  There is a downloadable "help" PDF for reader X that can be referenced, but it is not accessed with the F1-Help function.  Maybe they will fix this some day.

Anyone else having problems installing or running
Adobe Reader 7? It crashes right after displaying the
    menubar.
I had this with Adobe Acrobat Professional 7 as part of the Photoshop CS2 suite. It eventually locked up my MacBook so I ended up installing the operating system from the supplied Apple CDs.
I have subsequently seen a comment on the Adobe website about this issue. Adobe say they will not be releasing a Universal version until the next product upgrade.

Like so many others, I accepted the upgrade to Adobe Reader 10 and now I cannot open PDFs on the internet.
The error message I receive is:
"There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader. If it is running, please exit and try again. (1:1)"
This message appears with no instance of Acrobat or Reader running. It appears with every repeated attempt.
I would like to see Adobe support answer at least one of the questions posted on this subject.
