Adobe Reader 10.1.3 uses max CPU when closed

We're having the problem where Adobe Reader uses all of a CPU core when a user is closing the program but the .exe file is still running in the background.
We're running 10.1.3 and have been using that since it was released but the problem just recently started. It's running on top of Windows 2008 SP2 with Citrix XenApp 5.0 installed and using DFS.
The trick with denying the user access to the "cRecentFiles" in the registry don't seem to solve the problem.
Anyone who knows a way to solve this?

If you have Adobe processes (AcroRd32.exe) showing in the task manager after you close the Acrobat Reader that use up a significant amount of processor speed.  This is what you can do to fix it.
Basically the file that is used by the welcome screen (ReaderMessages) has become corrupted (that file is located here on Windows 7 C:\Users\%UserProfile%\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobat\10.0.)   Deleting that file did not help on a long term basis, but by disabling the welcome screen it bypasses that file and will close normally.  Unfortunately Adobe does not have a built in way to disable the welcome screen but you can disable it by making a small addition into the registry.
1. Open the regeidt and navigate to
a. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\FeatureLockDown
2. Add the a key with the name
a. cWelcomeScreen
3. Add a DWORD value to that key
a. bShowWelcomeScreen = 0
It should look like this when your finished
The welcome screen should not show when you open Acrobat Reader, and when you close the window the process should close with it.  If this fix does not work for you,  there might be something else causing your problem.

  • Adobe Reader for Mac 9.2 hangs up when closing windows

    I started having this problem a few weeks ago:  Adobe Reader 9.2 for Mac - with my MacBook (May 2006 - intel core duo) running Leopard 10.5.8 when I have 1 or more Adobe Reader "pdf" documents open and I wish to close one by either cmd-w or by clicking on the red close button top left; most if not all of the time the document goes black and the spinning ball of death appears and then either the program shuts down or I have to do a force quit or just quit.
    This never happened before-- I could always have from 1 to 20 pdf files open and just cmd-w the one or ones that I wanted to close and no problem they closed and the program was fine.
    Is this something new or ???   A bug or ???
    Thanks for any comments.  I did REINSTALL Adobe 9.2 but same problem.  I've done restarts and more.  This is the first time I've used this forum so not sure how I will get notified - do I have to recheck here or will I get a notice to my eMail address??

    If you subscribed you will get a new email for every post here. Otherwise you have to manually check. What you are seeing is not typical. I'd try the typical troubleshooting techniques.
    1) Fixing Permissions.
    2) Emptying various system caches.
    I'd recommend you get a copy of Applejack. It can do all that and find disk directory issues. Cost is reasonable---free.

    I created a brochure in pages and exported it to a pdf format. The pdf looks and opens perfectly using preview but when opened in adobe reader (which my printer uses), fonts look odd, transparencies don't display...etc. Tells me error exists on page?

    Does this essentially mean there is no way to fix this problem on my end? It's a pity because the design and branding of my brochure will suffer if I remove transparencies and use different fonts. It also concerns me moving forward because it means the quality of print on my pieces will be significantly lower because most commercial printers use Adobe products.

    I cannot log into Adobe Reader through my iphone using the Adobe ID and password which work on the website.

    Hi Will,
    That's great that you could sign in now.
    I think issue you faced in signing was because email verification was not done before. And when you signed from web client, you might have received a note asking you to do verification. It solved the logging issues you were facing on iPhone as well.

    Hi,
    when starting Adobe reader 9.4-1 on a Enterprise Linux 4 system the cpu load directly goes up to 100%
    This happens on EL40 update 4, 5 & 8

    I had the same problem on a RHEL4 system, I think starting with 9.3.1.  The system requirements say only RHEL 5 is supported so I just uninstalled 9.3 and didn't look into it further.

  • I cannot open pdf files from one supplier when using Adobe Reader but I can using another Viewer

    I cannot open pdf files from one supplier when using Adobe Reader but I can open it if using Google PDF viewer or another viewer. The Adobe reader gives the error "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired" when I try to open the file. The version of Adobe Reader is 10.1.7, however I have tried other versions and they all fail the same way.  I have tested on a number of different PC's in different networks and all fail using Adobe Reader but work using alternate viewer. Also the PC's will open a PDF from any other source.

    Newer Reader versions are more strict than older versions (and other PDF viewers).  If certain minimum requirements are not met, Reader will tell you that the PDF is damaged.  This can happen when a document was created with software that does not adhere to PDF standards, or when the file was damaged during a download or email transmission.
    You should contact the creator of these PDFs.

  • Does a person need Adobe Reader in order to use a fillable PDF form?

    I have created a fillable form using Acrobat XI and I find that some persons are unable to use it  while others are.  Does a person need Adobe Reader to use the fillable  form?  If so, how easy is it to download?
    Thank you

    Hi kenmilw,
    Reader is an excellent, and free, option for your recipients who need to fill out your form. It's easily downloaded from www.adobe.com/products/reader.html. You can also use the Fill & Sign service on Acrobat.com to fill any PDF form.
    What troubles are your recipients encountering? And those who do have trouble--how are they filling out the form?

  • Adobe Acrobat losing file association when installing Adobe Reader X or XI (Using Cust. Wizard)

    Hello Adobe Forums,
    I'm an IT professionnal in a large company, and we've been dealing with an issue using this software.
    Using the "Adobe Customization Wizard 9", prior to version X and XI, the following option was available:
    Adobe Acrobat 9:
    Adobe Reader 9:
    As you see, the customization wizard of both software allowed you to leave Adobe Acrobat as the default PDF handler.
    Now, let's look at the Customization Wizard X
    Adobe Acrobat X: (XI has the same options)
    Adobe Reader X: (XI has the same options)
    Now here, we can see that in Adobe Reader X, we only have "Make Reader the default" or "Installer will decide which will be the default"
    I want to keep Adobe Acrobat as the default, so I choose "Installer will decide which product will be the default"
    Guess which software becomes the default? Adobe Reader....
    So what is happening here is that Adobe Customization Wizard X and XI will NOT let you keep Acrobat as the default, unless you execute a repair or reinstall Acrobat after installing Adobe Reader.
    Adobe Reader X and XI forces itself to become the default handler, in every option scenario we can find. Adobe Customization Wizard 9 would let you choose to keep Acrobat as the handler. Why was this removed in X and XI?
    This is very annoying and causing a lot of grief inside the company. Is there a solution for this?

  • Keep getting screen that I need to download Adobe Reader to access documents.Using IE10 + Windows7

    I already have Reader 10.1.4 installed.  I receive a 'message' indicating that I need to ' ... download Adobe Reader ... '   It is extremely important that I access a specific document from a website asap .....  but I cannot.   Please help !!!!

    It could be that IE10 does not support Adobe PDF reader plugin.  If you have pdf reader already installed then you could download the files by right-clicking on the links and saving it on your machine which can then be opened in Reader.
    Alternatively, either downgrade to IE9 (IE10 is still in beta and should not be used in production machines) or use alternative browsers like Firefox 15.

    Good luck.

  • I downloaded the latest Adobe Reader but get the response:"Adobe reader out of date" Using Windows Vista and Opera browser

    Anyone have this prob?

    Screenshots attached to email replies will not make it back to the forum; you need to login to the forum and post it in your topic using the camera icon in the editor.
    Google Chrome is a problem:
    if you use Chrome's own PDF viewer, the results are unpredictable.
    if you use the Adobe Reader plugin with Chrome, it may reject (block) it if it is not the latest version.  Reader 11.0.08 is the latest version for Windows XP, but Chrome may insist on the current version 11.0.10.
    My suggestion; use a different browser!

  • FIFO read that doesn't use 100% CPU

    The FIFO read looks like an event based node (like a dequeue or wait on occurance) and I think there's a lot of people that assume it's going to use minimal cpu resources while it is waiting for data. I'm wondering if we can have an option that behaved like that. For example, could we have fixed sized FIFO read where the FPGA could trigger an interupt to let the RT side know the data is ready?

    Hey igagne,
    I think this is a good idea. I get that timeouts implemented with polling are exactly the right thing for some applications, and quite problematic for others. I think having an option would also make the behavior more obvious to the user, which is a good thing. That being said, we do have a few programming practices that we recommend that can help if the polling behavior is not suitable for your application. Have you been able to find a solution that's suitable for your application? What hardware are you using?
    Along the lines of potential workarounds, I think you'll be interested in this knowledge base, http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/583DDFF1829F51C1862575AA007AC792. A couple things I'd highlight, firstly some hardware does already work in the way you've described. Secondly, we generally recommend the example code shown at the bottom of the KB. In this way,your code has control over the polling rate and the tradeoff between a low latency response to data being available and consuming resources on the system. If you wanted an interrupt based solution to reduce time spent polling, it'd be possible to also add a wait on irq node and raise the irq from the FPGA when the data has been written. I'd still recommend polling for data after recieving the IRQ on the host because it's not generally guaranteed that the IRQ will arrive after all the data has made it's way to the host buffer, but it should be a much shorter poll.
    Thanks,
    Sebastian

  • Difference in Adobe reader behaviour while invoked using URL

    Hi,
    We need ability to open Adobe Reader (we use verson 9.4) from  web application and open Print Dialog immediately.
    The HTML page code is
    <html>
    <body onload="document.pdfViewer.PrintWithDialog();">
    <object id="pdfViewer" data="PDF_DIR/mydoc.pdf" type="application/pdf" width="100%" height="100%"></object>
    </script>
    </body>
    </html>
    The problem - when pdf document is multipage it is sitll reported as single page (in print range panel and preview panel)
    when Print Dialog is opened.
    If "All" option is chosen in Print Range, the number of pages reset ad right value appears.
    Please suggest if it could be somehow chanhed and user experience can be improved.
    Thanks,
      Oleg

    Moved to the Adobe Reader forum. They will be able to help you here.
    The cloud service provided by the Adobe Reader is a different file storage than the file storage provided by the Creative Cloud. I am not familiar with this Adobe Reader cloud service but it might be part of https://www.acrobat.com as opposed to https://creative.adobe.com/files.
