Adobe Reader 8.1.2 on Linux: Nothing happens

Hi,
I have installed Adobe Reader 8.1.2 on Linux (Scientific Linux 4.6, a redhat 4 derivate) a month ago and it worked.
Because of some problems related to other software I had to reinstall Adobe Reader completely new. The installation worked so far (no error messages), but when I start it nothing happens. No window is created, and no error message displayed.
What the hell is going on? Any ideas what to check? Maybe some crap from the old installation is still somewhere?
Cheers
Alex

Hi,
I have installed it from a tarball (rpm does not work for some reasons), after I have removed the directory
/opt/Adobe
where it is installed.
After I have removed the folder .adobe and tried to start acroreader, I saw a splash-screen very briefly. When starting the code again, there was no splashscreen any more.
After renaming plug_ins into something else, the behavious does not change. brief splash-screen after removing .adobe, nothing otherwise.

  • Adobe Reader 9.5.1 on Linux crashes every second time I try to print

    I can print perfectly.
But if Adobe Reader stays open, and I try to print the same document a second time, or I try to print another document: In the moment I click on the Ok button in the print dialog, Adobe Reader crashes (window disappears) and nothing is printed.
I have Adobe Reader 9.5.1 and cups 1.4.8.
(Because I have cups 1.4.8 I don't think my problem is related to http://forums.adobe.com/thread/691846).

I have the exact same problem with Adobe Reader 9.5.1 on Linux, gentoo build from sources of course, and the second time I try to print, or try to open a file or save, it means the second time you try to open a dialog that has something to do with system, it crashes...
It can be reproducible on other distributions.
    :s
I will not patch anything, but alternatives does not work as expected, also embedded into firefox has the same behaviour, and when it crashes you can not open any other pdf until you restart firefox and plugin reloads again...

    Hi,
    2 things:
    1. Assuming your script is original - it is not asking for a TXT file till it is found in expected location. You can choose between 2 solutions:
to remove FindChangeList.txt from FindChangeSupport folder ==> script will ask for another file
to override this file by your query ==> script will not ask but execute your query
    2. You can see greyed TXT files in Script Panel since this panel shows executable files (script's formats)

  • Install Adobe Reader 9.3.3 does (almost) nothing

Upgrading from an older version of Reader (8.1 I think) to 9.3.3 on WinXP SP3.  Downloaded the full installer (AdbeRdr933_en_US.exe) successfully.  Double-click it.  A window pops up saying "Processing Adobe Reader 9.3.3 Update".  The progress bar gets to 100%, the window disappears, then ... nothing.  No dialogs, no error messages.  Absolutely nothing happens after that.  I have:
    Rebooted 3 or four times
Uninstalled the previous version of Adobe Reader.
    Disabled my antivirus (Avast)
    Booted Windows into VGA mode
Run the MS Installer Cleanup tool, but there aren't any "Adobe..." programs in the list, so ... nothing to do there.
None of these has had any effect.  Suggestions?

Found a workaround.  Ran the installer with the -nos_ne switch (i.e."AdbeRdr933_en_US.exe -nos_ne"), then ran
    %USER_PROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Reader 9.3\Setup Files\Reader9\setup.exe .  Everything seemed to install just fine.
I did happen to notice that when I tried running the setup.exe in the "Setup Files" directory (one level above), nothing happened.  I suspect this is the program the installer runs after extracting all the files.  Of course the real question is WHY nothing happens, but I guess that's another question for another day.
Also probably worth mentioning -- I'm not sure if the -nos_ne switch is actially required. I believe the point of this switch is to get the installer extractor NOT to delete the setup files after the installation is complete, but I suspect if the installation doesn't happen they probably aren't getting deleted anyway.

  • Adobe Reader don't start. Linux. Computer 64 bits

I have installed the adobe acrobat reader in my computer (HP - Ubuntu 7.04 - Feisty Fawn - 64 bits), but it doesn't start.
When I try to start it from terminal emulator:
    rober@rober-laptop:~$ acroread
/usr/local/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread: error while loading shared libraries: libgdk_pixbuf_xlib-2.0.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
I search for the libgdk_pix.... but it is not available for 64 bits.
Is it possible to use acroread in 64 bits linux system?
Can anyone say me which is the way to resolve this problem?

History notice: Problem still reproducing with Adobe Reader 9.5.4 on Ubuntu 13.04 (April 2013).
Solution: The fix is to simply add the 32 bit version of the missing library. To be sure that you get them all consisstently, just:
        sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
Note: Solution seen on this article from the judsonsnotes.com website.

Here is the list of changes and bugs I found in AR8.1.1 and ways to fix them (bugs of course :-) ):
(this is how I fixed these bugs, you may find better ways to fix them)
The most important fix since AR 7.0.9 is that now AR8 works with new Linux
distributions which use recent GTK 2.0 libraries. It is known fact that when
recent GTK 2.0 library was present loading of AR 7.0.9 failed with endless
loop of messages: "expr: syntax error" on console window and serious CPU
usage hit silently slowing down computer reactions. Now this is fixed.
New feature added: Now AR8 scans font pathes inside X config files and adds
found fonts to its own internal font cache so system wide fonts are used for
pdf pages rendering in addition to default built-in AR8 package fonts. If
user will copy font files from Windows/fonts directory to X font locations
the pdf files outlook in AR8 is identical to the one on Windows.
When someone uses tar.bz2 or tar.gz installer it will ask for installation
directory and will show default [ /opt] directory. Do not press enter here!
If you do this a ?[3~ junk directory will be created in current directory. To
overcome this manually type /opt or other location.
Another bug is blank grey window on first run of AR8. Just close it with X and
provide path to libgtkembedmoz folder. This library is a part of mozilla web
browser so it can be found in any mozilla program directory:
    /usr/lib/firefox
    /usr/lib/seamonkey
    /usr/lib/thunderbird
    /usr/lib/mozilla
or other locations where mozilla software is installed.
Just run AR8, go to Edit->Preferences->Categories->Internet->Select Browser,
and fill in libgtkembedmoz Folder path with one of these locations or find
    correct one for your system.
The last bug is AR8 only creates desktop icons on root account.
AR8 can be run without icon. Just run /usr/bin/acroread

While trying to download and install Adobe Reader, when I click on OPEN, nothing happens.  When I click on SAVE, I receive the message download failed.  When I retry, a file is downloaded; however, I am unable to open the file.  I am using Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 11.

I am using WIN XP PRO SP 3.0 32 bit on a desktop....
I have tried 3 times to re-install Adobe Reader for Windows, but it keeps on telling me that the installation was unsuccessful...I have tried to find out more, I seem to have met all the requirements, and yes I tried that link, too.....
Any ideas? I know this Q & A was last year,  but maybe you might have found an answer for me, as I uninstalled my current version before I started, now I wish I had left it alone....but I was trying to fix another problem on Firefox, which said I had to re-install anything from Adobe, to see if it would fix my little problem, now I have a bigger problem!!
The 1st problem was I cannot upload pics on Facebook, now I find I cannot upload a pic for Adobe, (on my profile page)!!!! I can still insert/upload a pic on Word, however....
I do hope you might be able to help me, as I am a novice when it comes to fixing problems....
    Many thanks....Peace & Love

  • Adobe Reader 9 plugin fails to load on RedHat Linux OS

I built a plugin using Acrobat SDK 9 for Adobe reader 9.5 on Redhat Linux OS. I am able to successfully build and reader enable the plugin.
But when I start Adobe Reader 9, the plugin fails to load with error "Undefined Symbol: RestorePlugInFrame".
As I understand, on Linux platform with C++ enabled, the RestorePlugInFrame function should not be required.
Is there any other flag I need to set while building the plugin?
Appreciate any suggestions in resolving this issue. Thank you.

Yes. Adobe support told me that the license key I used to build Adobe 8 plugin on Linux should work for Adobe 9 plugin too. Using SignPlugin tool and the license key I was able to successfully reader enable the plugin.

  • Adobe reader printing: A4 vs US letter

Hi, I'm using Adobe Reader 8.1.1 on Linux (Red Hat enterprise Linux 4). Printers are defined on a remote CUPS-server.
As I'm not in US/Canada, I have printers which use sensible paper: A4 ;-)
The CUPS server has ppd files which define the default paper size as A4,
and that size is confirmed if I use the "kprinter" command to look at the properties of each CUPS-defined printer.
If in Adobe Reader 8, I view an A4-size PDF document, I can confirm it's A4 by looking at File -> Properties. If I then go to File -> Print, then there are several oddities:
    1) with the "Choose paper source by PDF page size" unchecked, the page size shown by the Preview box on the right-hand-side shows US-letter size dimensions;
    2) if I then continue to actually print, the printer LCD screen confirms that the Adobe Reader is trying to use US Letter size paper, and in the case of one make of printer, refuses to print it.
    3) If I try to get more information about what Adobe Reader thinks about the printer by clicking on Properties next to the printer selection, nothing happens.
    4) If I check the "Choose paper source by PDF page size" box, then all is well and the print does come out as A4. However, that ticked box is not remembered for next time, so the user is perpetually having to remember to check that box.
This problem appeared in later versions of Adobe Reader 7, but was not present in version 7.0.1, which was probably not CUPS-aware.
I suspect a problem with dealing with the information retrieved via CUPS. Does anyone know of a circumvention, or a fix?? Thanks.

    Create print presets
A PDF can contain a set of print presets, a group of document-specific values that is used to set basic print options. By creating a print preset for a document, you can avoid manually setting certain options in the Print dialog box each time you print the document. Its best to define print settings for a PDF at the time that you create it, but print presets provide a means to add basic print settings to a PDF at any time.
Choose File > Properties, and click the Advanced tab.
In the Print Dialog Presets section, set options and click OK.
The next time you open the Print dialog box, the values will be set to the print preset values. These settings are also used when you print individual documents in a PDF package.
Note: To retain a print preset for a PDF, you must save the PDF after creating the print preset.
    Print Dialog Presets
Page Scaling Prepopulates the Page Scaling option in the Print dialog box with the option you choose:
Default Uses the application default setting, which is Shrink To Printable Area.
None Prevents automatic scaling to fit the printable area. This setting is useful for preserving the scale of page content in engineering documents, or for ensuring that documents print at a particular point size to be legal.
DuplexMode For best results, the selected printer should support duplex printing if you select a duplex option.
Simplex Prints on one side of the paper.
Duplex Flip Long Edge Prints on both sides of the paper; the paper flips along the long edge.
Duplex Flip Short Edge Prints on both sides of the paper; the paper flips along the short edge.
Paper Source By Page Size Selects the option by the same name in the Print dialog box. Uses the PDF page size to determine the output tray rather than the page setup option. This option is useful for printing PDFs that contain multiple page sizes on printers that have different-sized output trays.
Print Page Range Prepopulates the Pages box in the Print Range section of the Print dialog box with the page ranges you enter here. This setting is useful in a workflow where documents include both instruction pages and legal pages. For example, if pages 12 represent instructions for filling out a form, and pages 35 represent the form, you can set up your print job to print multiple copies of only the form.
Number Of Copies Prepopulates the Copies box in the Print dialog box. Choose a number from 2 to 5, or choose Default to use the application default, which is one copy. This limitation prevents multiple unwanted copies from being printed.
