Adobe Reader 8.1.7 upgrade path?

Could someone please explain the upgrade path to Adobe Reader 8.1.7 for me? I read the tech note "Adobe Acrobat and Reader Updating and Deployment Information" and I find myself still a little unsure.
Our most currently deployed version is 8.1.6 but some of our users still have older versions (8.1.2 ~ 8.1.5) installed. I have been distributing Adobe Reader via SMS 2003 since version 8.1.2 as below:
8.1.2 - Customized using Adobe Cusomtization Wizard 8 (Setup.exe /sPB /rs /rps)
8.1.3 - Customized using Adobe Cusomtization Wizard 8 (Setup.exe /sPB /rs /rps)
8.1.4 - Straight (installAdbeRdrUpd814_all_incr.msp /qb-! /norestart)
8.1.5 - Straight install (AdbeRdrUpd815_all_incr.msp /qb-! /norestart)
8.1.6 - Straight install (AdbeRdrUpd816_all_incr.msp /qb-! /norestart)
So what is my upgrade path for Adobe Reader 8.1.7 - straight install (AdbeRdrUpd817_all_incr.msp /qb-! /norestart) or do I need to customize it using the Adobe Cusomization wizard to retain the desired settings? Appreciate any advice that anyone can offer. Thanks very much.

Thanks for your reply Deepak. That is what I was expecting but when I read the Adobe KB cpsid_49880 (link), it had me feeling somewhat unsure as to what is correct. The "quarterly" and "security" releases and unacceptable upgrade paths.
Administrative Deployment
Due to the intentional difference between "Security" and "Quarterly" Updates, IT professionals desiring to deploy Acrobat or Reader products from an Administration Installation Point (AIP) must follow certain guidelines as noted below.
AIP Creation: Quarterly Updates cannot be applied to an AIP in which a Security Update was the most recently applied Update. Therefore, to deploy a new full Quarterly Update from an AIP, create an AIP (or use previous) which includes only Quarterly Updates.
To clarify, shown below are examples of acceptable and UNacceptable "AIP" configurations:
    Acceptable:      Acrobat 9.0.0 (Original Product) -> 9.1.0 (Quarterly) -> 9.1.1 (Security)
    Acceptable:      Acrobat 9.0.0 (Original Product) -> 9.1.0 (Quarterly) -> 9.1.2 (Quarterly)
    Unacceptable:  Acrobat 9.0.0 (Original Product) -> 9.1.0 (Quarterly) -> 9.1.1 (Security) -> 9.1.2 (Quarterly)
Note, Attempting to create an AIP using the last configuration shown above will fail. The failure, however, serves to prevent a usage of updates which is not recommended by Adobe.
If I am simply installing via SMS 2003 using the command "AdbeRdrUpd817_all_incr.msp /qb-! /norestart)" do the above rules not apply (given that the end users have a 8.1.6 installed?

  • Special character issue with Adobe Reader 11.03 in hyperlink path

Adobe Reader changes a [ character in a hyperlink path to a % sign, thus changing the path and destroying the link, when opened in version 11.03.  This does not happen with 11.01.  This is a serious problem for our customers with a critical linked document, because the customers are generall not tech savvy, and categorically refuse workarounds. They will not adjust their Adobe version for fear of security issues. Can this be corrected in a future version of Adobe Reader?

  • Not able to open adobe reader 8.1.2, upgrade or uninstall

I am using Windows 7 operating system.  My adobe was working a couple of months ago, but now I get an error when I try to open it.  It is not able to find the network location (?) and gives me a repeated fatal error.  I have tried to uninstall the original program but it won't allow me to do that either, the same if I try to upgrade.  I need this for both school and work.  Any ideas?

Can you post a screenshot of the error message that you are seeing?

  • Adobe Reader updater doesn't work properly in Windows 7

For the longest time, I've been receiving update notifications from Adobe Reader, prompting me to upgrade. I always say ok, download the update. Then it always takes like 1 second to download (hard to believe it's that fast), then I get the install window. I press the "Install" button and the window disappears and I don't receive any additional messages... Until I reboot my computer and I get again the same update download prompt window.
So it seems the update doesn't work and that's why I get that message EVERYTIME I reboot the PC. Not matter if I reboot every 5 minutes, I always get that message.
Please, fix your updater so it doesn't annoy the user like this with non working updates!
Since the updater doesn't work, is there a way to disable it? Thank you!

Ok, I've added the registry setting you mentioned, then I've started "AdobeARMHelper.exe" again to get the tray notification about the available update. Then I've clicked it, I got the download window, I clicked "Download", then 1 second later I got another tray notification about the update being ready to install (maybe it takes so little time because the update is already in my computer and so it doesn't download anything). Then I clicked the tray notification and got the install window. I clicked Install, and nothing else happened, as always.
Then, I've checked the "AdobeARM.log" file, and now it shows the following:

It seems there are some errors in Spanish, probably because they come from Windows, which is configured in Spanish in my PC. "El sistema no puede encontrar el archivo especificado" means "The system cannot find the file specified".
I hope you can find the problem with that information.

  • PageMaker upgrade path to InDesign?

Anyone know when Adobe will stop offering that upgrade path? We should probably upgrade before they do so. Does anyone know if it will be with CS5? Also, when we do upgrade, is the software specific to PageMaker only, or is it universal and it is just the way Adobe offers the upgrade path? Many thanks!!!

I would think that no plain
user knows, and that any Adobe employee who knows will not be allowed to say. And as far as I know, the special upgrade price only applies for  upgrades from PageMaker 6 or higher.
My guess is that Adobe will keep this offer as long as they keep on selling PageMaker, something that in my opinion they should have stopped doing as soon as they stopped developing the product. If you are going to upgrade, my suggestion would be to do it as soon as possible.
Extra linefeed kindly provided by the software.

    Thank you Pat,
I have already been there done that. I first  Un-installed all of my adobe freeware (reader, flash player, air. etc) then started reinstalling. First I reinstalled reader (latest version Reader X), same error messages. added AIR (latest version not listed - Last updated April 1st, 2012 -
maybe that should tell me something), same error messages. I un-installed these two and reinstalled AdobeFlash Player,Adobe Shockwave Player,&Adobe Media Player, verifying that each worked after each reinstall of the next program everything was OK until I put Reader back on (NOTE: I dug all the way back to version 8 & still had the problem). for some unknown reason I finally right clicked on a PDF file on my desk top & was greeted with a the drop menu & he option of "open with" for fun I clicked on the "open with" & found that I had two options the first was a white Icon with the Stylized A and labeled Acrobat.com the second was the normal red Icon we all know & live
when I reset the default to the normal red Icon everything began to work just as I have always had adobe reader work. Now I have no clue how or when I picked up the "Acrobat.com" program even worse it does not show up under programs on the control panel. When I have a few moments this evening, I will run a search for "Acrobat.com" & hopefully be able to remove it from my computer.
Bottom line I don't know how I got the program which seems to have caused the breakdown of adobe reader but by resetting the default program to open PDF files it is now working as it should
    Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Adobe Reader 9.3.2 - PDF attachment won't print from right click

    Hi all,
Hopefully someone can assist some kind of suggestion, we have just rolled out Adobe Reader 9.3.2 upgrade from v8.  When we now try to print a PDF Outlook 2003 attachment from the right click menu, we are prompted with the 'Open With' window.  Selecting Adobe Reader 9.3 and press okay opens the document, but it doesn't spool.  We can print the document fine from Adobe Reader itself, any ideas?
    TIA
    Frosty

I have seen the same problem in this forum a couple of times (on Windows Vista and 7 only), but I have never seen a solution for it.
Can you try if Adobe Reader 8.2 does the same?  Download it from here http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.2/enu/AdbeRdr820_en_US.msi
If the same happens with Reader 8.2, then I have no other suggestion than to try an alternate PDF viewer.

  • Making Adobe Reader work with Mac OS 10.6.4

I am about ready to give up... I have OS 10.6.4. I have loaded the proper version of adobe reader 9.3 and upgraded with 9.3.1; 9.3.2; and 9.3.3 but still cannot read a PDF file. All attempts to open result in the same error message: "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."
This happens with every PDF. Yet, I can open it on other machines. Does ANYONE know what I am doing wrong? I have to believe I am doing something wrong because it is the same on my IMAC and my MACBOOK PRO.
I do have some files that I can open (actually they open automatically) with Preview, but not all. And, the ones I cannot open I can open on other machines. ......Anyone.....anyone....
Thanks in advance to all those smarter than I for the assist.

I just bought a new iMac loaded with 10.6.4 and was also unable to open existing .pdf files. I downloaded and (I thought) installed the latest version (9.3.3) from the Adobe site but continued to get a message that the "Adobe Reader.app was not recognized by this version of Mac" (or something to that effect). It wasn't until I located the file in the Application folder, opened it from there, and was guided to complete the installation that I could use the program. Hope this helps.

  • Adobe Reader Prints Partial File

.NET Application on Windows 2003 Server that generates letters to a PDF file, opens Adobe Reader and sends PDF file to network printer.
Upgraded Adobe Reader 7.0 to Adobe Reader X.
Since the upgrade, only part of the file prints.
File still gets generated correctly on server, problem occurs when file is sent to printer.
There is no pattern, however seems to occur most often when the file has 60+ pages, although sometimes a larger file will print to completion.
Entire file will print, then one day only a portion of the file prints.
However, if an individual opens the file on the server with Adobe Reader and prints, the entire file prints ok.
Tried uninstaling Adobe Reader X and installing Adobe Reader 9.5 and same problem.
No errors generated on server or printer.
    Have rebooted server and printer.
Tried on Kodak Digimaster PS 8.0 and Canon ImageRunner
Any thoughts as to what could be going on?
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

  • Adobe reader X limbo

    Hi
I'm stuck in adobe reader limbo.
I upgraded to reader X recently and had my PC crash a few times opening documents so tried uninstalling and re-installing an older version but no joy.
When I try to install an older version I get the error message: 'Set-up has detected you have a more functional version' and doesn't install.
When I try to re-install reader X  I get: 'The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer Service as the program to be upgraded may be missing or a different version...'
    I'm using WXP SP3 and IE7
I've tried to do this a few times, using control panel to remove the program, deleting any Adobe folders but I can't get any version installed.
Can anyone tell me how I can get a working version of reader installed please?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    M

Try using a different web browser. I was having this same problem when I was using Firefox, but then tried it in Opera and it worked like it was supposed to. I guess Adobe was in too much of a rush to release another product that they neglected to make sure it worked...They would get an 'F' in a software engineering course.

  • Adobe reader files

can no longer open an adobe file without having to save it first;  any fixes??

Hello and thanks for responding. I use Mozilla Firefox.  I cannot locate the version.  I use Windows 8.1.  When I open an e-mail attachment that is in a pdf format, and try to print it, it opens a save as window and will not print until I save and then open the document.  This is something new after I did an upgrade on both the adobe reader and a windows upgrade.  Also, I tried to open a pdf file on an internet site today and it again opens the save as window and would not let me just view the file.  This is also a new occurence.
I also do not know which version of adobe reader but I just re-downloaded it today in case there was some sort of corruption.

  • What is happening with Adobe reader?

Is anyone else having problems with Adobe Reader since the last upgrade?

Well here is the latest after ten failed downloads...
ANNOUNCEMENT: Adobe Reader and Mac OS X.7 (Lion) Compatibility
    Hide Details
Adobe Reader is not fully compatibile with OS X.7 from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/908/cpsid_90885.html
    Overview
Adobe Reader plug-in and Acrobat plug-in are not compatible with the Safari 5.1 browser, which will ship with Mac OS X 10.7 and for 10.6 in July. Adobe Reader and Acrobat will continue to work as standalone applications on Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.6, and will render PDF documents outside of the browser. In addition, Safari 5.1 renders PDF documents natively. However, the Adobe Reader and Acrobat plug-ins will not function as expected in LiveCycle and Acrobat workflows that require either plug-in to render PDF documents in Safari 5.1.
    Affected Customers
Applications that require the Adobe Reader or Acrobat plug-in to render PDF documents in the Safari browser will be affected. For Adobe Reader, Acrobat, and LiveCycle customers who utilize functionality like forms, digital signatures, portfolios, guides, 3D, extended PDFs and rights management, and who require the Adobe Reader or Acrobat plug-in to render PDF documents in the Safari browser, Adobe recommends that you continue to use Safari 5.0.x and Mac OS X 10.6.
    Workarounds
Adobe Reader and Acrobat will still work as expected outside of the browser. For cases in which a user can open a PDF document in Safari, but cannot use all of the functionality in the PDF because it requires Adobe Reader or Acrobat, the user can save the PDF file from Safari to his or her computer, and then open it directly in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.
In other cases, such as Adobe Reader, Acrobat and LiveCycle applications that utilize functionality like forms, digital signatures, portfolios, guides, 3D, extended PDFs and rights management, viewing a PDF inside the browser with the Adobe Reader or Acrobat plug-in may be required, and thus this workaround will not be successful.

I love the suggestion I go back to Snow Leopard just when Apple announced a new OS. So that make them three operating systems behind, right?

  • Deploying Adobe Reader 9 help

I have the Adobe Reader Customizer, however the boxes to uninstall older versions are greyed out. I have over 200 machines, most of them are running Reader 6.0 and above, however there are some ancient ones where I've seen Reader 5 and below.
I've read that Adobe Reader 9 will automatically upgrade Adobe Reader versions above 7..is this true? I can't have numerous reader icons on their desktop. I have a batch file set up to do a registry check and if a version exist then to uinstall it, then later I'll deploy the custom reader 9 msi. Example of the batch file is below..sorry for the length.
I'm just looking for the easiest way to clean up any version of Adobe prior to v9.x before deployment.
