Adobe Reader 9 - Freezing browser

I have used Firefox, Internet Explorer and Chrome and have run into the same problem. Recently, as I have opened .pdfs there has been the ability to read the .pdf for about 30 seconds, and as soon as I scroll down, it locks up my browser. I have taken to saving the .pdf to my computer and printing it as soon as I have opened it without reading it on my computer.
I have not had problems previously, and found it difficult to blame the .pdfs. I will state, if I used IE, it locked up my whole computer, whereas when I used Chrome, it just had issues within the window.
I am using Chrome (primarily), Windows Vista (updated regularly) and have not upgraded to Adobe Reader X.

I actually meant I was using Windows 7.
Also, I use the most current of Internet Explorer and of Firefox, as well as Chrome. All of them froze up in the last few weeks when trying to download certain pdfs within them. Also, I downloaded a pdf from an instructor, and it froze both Reader and Acrobat.
I keep acceleration off, often, because laptops have a tendency to lock up with acceleration turned on. But I'll try that again.

Is it the Download assistant that is freezing or is it the web browser that freezes?

  • Issue with Adobe Reader XI Freezing when Printing/Opening Documents

I've been having problems with Adobe Reader XI freezing when I attempt to print documents. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it several times. I've gone back to previous versions. I've disabled protected mode. I've run Adobe reader without background programs running. I've done a disk clean-up, and deleted temporary files. All to no avail. Is there anyone who can help me solve this problem.

There's no built-in function in Reader that does that, but it can be done using a script.

  • Adobe Reader XI freezes my computer when I try to print

I cannot print any pdf files.  I am running Windows 7 and when I open Adobe Reader XI and try to print a pdf, I get the print dialog box just fine but then when I click "Print," the dialog box comes up to show print progress and at that point everything freezes.  I am printing to a wireless printer HP Deskjet 6980.  I can't even get Ctl-Alt-delete to get me to Task Manager so I have to hold down the power button and I don't like having to shut down that way.

I have been having the same problem for weeks.  I am using Windows 7, Mozilla 33.0.3, and Adobe Reader version XI.0.09.  I saw some advice on another site that I relied on in resolving this.  You need to open the Reader, to to Edit, click on Preferences.  On the Left Hand menu, find "Security (Enhanced)" and open it. If "Enable Protected Mode at Start-up" is active, disable that.  "Enhanced Security" is likely already enabled (and you want to leave that on); if not, enable it.
Under "Privileged Locations," make sure both options (Trust documents/Trust sites) are enabled.  Then open the box entitled "View Windows Trusted Sites."  This will take you to the browser's Security Tab.  Click the green arrow "Trusted Sites" and then the "Sites" tab that appears.  Add the relevant https://.***.com site from which you wish to be able to print *.pdfs.  (Note: It is very important the you make sure to include the secure site, i.e., https..., and not the initial www.***.com site from which you may access the secure site).  After you have added the secure address, click Add, then Close the window.  Make sure then to Click "OK" to close the Security Tab, and then scroll down to the bottom of the "Security (Enhanced)" page to which you will be returned and click OK there.  Close the Adobe Reader and any other Reader windows you may have open.
You can now go to the secure site whose address you just entered, and download the .pdf you want.  (If you have already downloaded the .pdf on your computer from that site you can now just open it instead).  Send the print command for the pages of the .pdf page you want.  The system will hang for a few seconds (at least mine did), but then it prints.
You may be able to go directly to the Security Tab in your browser and enter the secure site in question without going through a pdf document and it will also work but I do not know that for sure.
Finally, I am not an expert; just another user who figured this out with a little help from others.  An expert may wish to comment further on what I have written above to provide further guidance or instruction.
    Good luck.
Later Note:  It is possible to add a non-secure site from which you want to download and open .pdfs to the Trusted Site list.  To do this, uncheck the "Require server verification (https://) for all sites in this zone" box that appears under the listed of Trusted Sites.  As I am not an expert user I do not know if doing this represents a significant security issue but I at least do not find that is the case after running a cursory search online.

  • Adobe Reader 9 freezes up my pc on 'close'

I have been having problems in closing down the internet by using the 'X' in the top right hand corner of the screen. It would start to close, then I'd get a pop-up message stating something like"Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close," with an option below to report the fault or not report it. Whichever option I chose, once I'd clicked on it, my pc would then freeze up. Then I could not do anything; I couldn't access the Start-Turn Off Computer option as everything was frozen and the only way out was to hold the on/off switch on the hard drive in for a few seconds to make the system cut out. I could then switch it back on and start again, but the same thing would happen again as soon as I clicked on 'X' in the top-right. IE6, IE7 and Firefox made no difference; they all jammed up when closing. I tried several remedies over many hours, none of which worked until I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9 which I had only recently set up and the problem disappeared.
Now I've got rid of the problem but I can't read anything in Adobe because I don't have it and I dare not risk installing it again. Does anyone know what has happened here? If it means anything I have Windows XP Home edition and Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.

Thanks for your help everyone. All your replies were much appreciated, however I have now solved this myself. If you want to know how then that's my little secret although what I DO know is that Adobe Reader 9.1 really is the worst Adobe yet and I've had enough Adobe problems ever since I've had my pc, I can tell you. It's just a shame that the people who are employed to dream up these scams that will work for some but not all can't go and work in Macdonalds or somewhere, or if counting money is too difficult then maybe outside Macdonalds picking up the litter, and leave the more technical work to those competent enough to do it.
Thanks for another problem, Adobe. Sorry to disappoint you but I've managed to solve it although I'm sure your geeks are thinking of something right now that will be even more difficult to correct.
I've given my opinion of Adobe Reader 9.1 on Cnet. One star out of five because it wouldn't allow me to put zero.

  • Adobe Acrobat 6 and Adobe Reader 9 Web browser problem

    Good Day,
I have a user that has Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 installed on the same computer. Acrobat 6 is used to edit (via open with -> Adobe Acrobat) while for normal reading, they use Adobe Reader 9 (since some files that were created in Acrobat 9 cannot be opened with Acrobat 6).
From the desktop, everything works as it should. However, the problem is that when the user is trying to open a document on the web (from Internet Explorer 7) then instead of using Reader 9, it uses Acrobat 6 (and because is unable to open Acrobat 9 files) it gives an error saying that you need to have Adobe Reader 8 or 9 installed.
So far I have tried the following:
    1) Reparing Reader 9
    2) Uninstalling Acrobat 6 running a repair on Reader 9 (which fixes the problem, until I reinstall Acrobat 6 again. I make sure I do not put a check mark on Read files on Internet Explorer)
    3) Went to Preferences on Acrobat 6 and unchecked Display PDF in browser.
    4) Checked on Manage Add-ins and tried disable any combination of Adobe PDF addin to make it work only with 9.
Note: Reader version is the latest 9.4.1
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Max

Ok, so after I wrote the last post, I read through the related posts, and found the answer to
    what i was looking for.
I guess it is unofficial, but I tested it today and works great:
Registry that needs to be changed is:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe
Change the path (Acrobat 6) from "c:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat6\Acrobat.exe"
to the path of Reader 9 which would be something like "c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe"
    That fixed the problem.
    Thanks
    Max

  • Adobe Reader XI freezing and not opening docs

I have downloaded Adobe Reader XI on my PC and now my docs won't open. It freezes in IE and I have to use task manager to end task.
No problems before XI version.  I uninstalled and reinstalled, same issues.
    Thanks in advance!

Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Adobe Reader XI freezes computer when opened from Excel hyperlink

My computer has been frozen multiple times after opening a pdf from a hyperlink in Excel. Sometimes it randomly freezes after reading the document for a while and sometimes it freezes when I try to close the document. I have Adobe Reader XI 11.0.06, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS, and Excel 2010. The mouse will still move sometimes once things freeze up but clicking doesn't work and alt+ctrl+del doesn't bring up task manager either, so I have to hard reboot. Anyone have a fix for this?
    Thanks in advance.

The first thing I would try is to disable Protected Mode in Adobe Reader [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • Adobe Reader: PDF im Browser - Kommentieren deaktiviert

    Hallo,
Was bedeutet das? Hat jemand eine Idee?
    Danke
    Beste Grüße
    Vedran

  • Adobe Reader XI Freezes

When I open a PDF, it just freezes. I try to close it and it won't respond so I have to do the forced End Now. Error reports are automatically generated and I send them but the problem is still there. I even tried to launch it without a PDF and tried to change preferences, but it freezes there too. My other software is working fine.

You can try using Windows Explorer to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement

  • Adobe Reader/Professional or Browser

    Hi,
My application can open a pdf document, developed in ADOBE Livecycle Designer, either in ADOBE Reader/Acrobat Professional or a browser having the pdf plug-in installed. I need to capture the 2 scenarios in some way and do some operation based on whether a browser window is being used to view the document or not. Please let me know if it is possible to capture this in some way.
    Thanks,

  • Adobe Reader X freezes

I have adobe reader X on my computer and everytime I go to open a PDF the program freezes and I have to use task manager to shut down the program.  Can you help me with this problem?
    Lynn

When I finally got an Adobe tech support person to talk to me, he said it'd cost $39 for on phone advice and I should go tohttp://forums.adobe.com/thread/886700, which I did and it says this is a common problem and offers some user ideas on fixes, chief among them disabling "protected mode" in general preferences.  Some forum participants said this worked; it hasn't yet for me, but I'm trying reboots, etc.  It so far has resulted in reducing the freeze slightly so that I can turn off the program from the screen's X box.  Still working on it.  See what you can do.
