Adobe Reader 9 - Search tool problems

Hey guys,
I have recently downladed a whole load of pdf. documents which I need to analyse. They are a set of old news papers which have obviously been scanned in, and I need to search for specific information within them.
The only thing is, whenever I use the Adobe search tool, the search engine always comes up with "no matches found"! This includes searching for real basic things like the headline of the newspaper or even the title itself!
I really need to be able to search this documents as I have about 500 of them and going through them page by page would be like being at the dentist with no anathestic!!!
Any thoughts you guys have on this really would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Happy New Year,
Simon

In order for them to be searchable, you would need to run OCR on them and you can't do that with Reader.
There are numerous tools to do OCR. Try Google.

  • Adobe Reader Search function fails

@@I'm using Adobe Reader Version 11.0.10 under Windows 7 64-Bit SP1 with all actual updates. When i try to search any word or Phrase of contained in the text of a specific PDF File, then the search Fails. It does not come up with the search item i have keyed in. I did not misspell the search item and it is definitely contained in the text, but the search function does not find it. i am absolutely surethat the search item is in text Format and it is contained in the PDF file, because i can Access and search it when i open this PDF file on an iPad for instance. there it works, but not in my Windows envioenment.
I guess that this problem will not be completely new for you, because other users are discussing this Problem in the Internet as well.
Can you help me with an answer and hopefully with a recommendation on how to overcome this Problem.
    thanks in advance and
    Kind regards
    Guenther
    p.s.:
sorry, i am new on thjis platform... how  when aproximatrely does one get an answer here?

    Hello Pat,
i followed your advise and have used the link contained in point 3 of
your recommendations --- for reference see your response as appended
    below (https://cloud.acrobat.com/).
So, in case i made no mistake (?), then you can access the PDF file we
are talking about when you follow this link here:
    https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/0f9d2ce4-b4b9-4223-8fd2-723441d7d2ab***
This PDF file contains a description of an olympus camera. When you open
this PDF file please go to page 6.
Directly under the picture on top of the page (which shows a dark blue
car driving from left to right) you can read the word "Mitziehmodus"
(without parantheses). This german word is one of those search items
which the PDF search function of my PDF reader installation does not
find. There are many other words the search function does not find as
well, but let us use this word (Mitziehmodus) as an example to
demonstrate the malfunction as i experience it on my pc.
Meanwhile i have installed a completely new windows-system 7 from
scratch. The PDF reader (11.0.10) is currently the only installed
software. I made this windows 7 installation only to assure that there
is no other software eventually influencing the search function. But the
search function fails again when searching for this word "Mitziehmodus".
One remark still to your statements concerning accented characters.
Character like ä, ö, ü or ß are quite normal characters in writing
german language text. But these characters can not be found also! In
general it does not make much sense to serach for a single character (at
least in my understanding). Searching for ä or ö or ü results in finding
something completely meaningless. But this behaviour shows additionally
that there is something wrong with the search function as it ist
    implemented in Adobe Reader.
In general i am convinced that this PDF file will be correct ,
because i can search any search item and find correct search results
when i access this file on my iPad regardless in what so ever combination.
i hope that you can access the problem PDF file following the link i
    sent you above.
And i would be happy wehen you could find thze reason for my search
    problems.
thank you so far. i appreciate to heare from you soon.
    kind regards
    Günther

    Hi guidolal,
Are you facing the issue with any pdf's on the Mac.
Have you tried downloading a sample pdf like any Adobe help file from the website and then check if you are able to launch it fine via Reader?
    Regards,

  • Adobe Reader Search problem

Since Adobe Reader 9 we have a problem with the "find" (search the content of pdf files). Sometimes it works fine and sometimes the search result highlights incorrect words.
We use now Adobe Reader 9.1.2 but had the same problem on 9.1.0. It seems that the count of results is correct, but not the highlightet word. The files have the PDF-version 1.4.
Do anyone know the problem or have an idea whats wrong?

The Problem was not Adobe Reader!
We use ScanSoft PDF Create! to create the PDF files directly from Word 2007. In the tool settings we activated now the option "Optimize for Web Viewing". Now it works correctly with every testet document.
But it still strange, that we didn't had the Problem with Adobe Reader 8.
    Many thanks for your support.

  • Why is Preview unable to search some pdfs that Adobe Reader has no problem searching?

In the last couple months, I've noticed that Preview is unable to search some (but not all) pdfs. These are clearly digitized journal articles, recently published. Since this didn't make sense to me, I opened the documents with Adobe Reader and found they were searchable using Adobe.
What is going on? I'd prefer to use Preview, since I'd always preferred its search function and like its annotation tools (specifically, the box outline tool I use to identify chunks of text). Should I just give up on Preview and switch to Adobe?

I can search that document in both Safari and Preview.
    Back up all data.
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Adobe Reader searches PDF incorrectly Foxit does it correctly

There is an "answered" thread on this subject.
I find that Adobe Reader is hit or miss on searches. I am looking up court cases which
are presented to me in PDF format by filetype:PDF.
I know a tern is in the PDF because that is how Google selected it. Adobe reader won't always find the term. Sometimes it finds an entirely different word that what I enter in the search box.
This is not a problem with the way that the PDF was created because Foxit Reader finds the terms.
    What is going on?

    Hey Grethe,
Please use the ' Fix It '  tool for your specific Windows version using this link : When you run an .exe file on a Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7-based computer, the file may start a different pro…
Once done restart your computer. Let me know if the issue persist.

  • Adobe Bridge Search Tool Just Stopped Working

i recently upgraded to CS6 and all was well for a couple weeks then all of the sudden the search tool in bridge just flat out stopped working. i always used it to search for keywords and it worked almost flawlessly until today. i have thousands of photos on multiple hard drives and ive even tried indexing them to no avail. nothing works. ive used both the search bar in the top right corner as well as the find window and still nada. i purged the cache, i rebuilt the cache and did everything else i could think of still to no avail. ive googled and googled and googled and found absolutely no help in resolving this issue. i reset bridge during startup also to no avail. i even indexed specific files in specific folders and pointed the search directly to those folders and still nothing. i dont know what else to try at this point. can anyone offer any suggestions before i give up and just re-install the product (which i REALLY dont wanna do)?
im running CS6 on Windows 7 64-bit .. and again, it worked fine until today. i havent changed any settings or modified anything that i can think of that would have thrown bridge out of whack.

Weird. Have you tried resetting Bridge (Ctrl/Cmd-click icon)?
Maybe the cache is damaged or unwriteable?
I assume that the index is created in the Cache 'data' folder, and that this is the root of your problem.  As an experiment, you could create a new folder in a known good writeable location on an internal drive, and change the cache location in Bridge Preferences (making a note of the existing location first). When you restart Bridge, it will use the new location, and automatically create a new index and preview cache.
Then try a search in one folder, for a known used keyword, making sure you have indexing turned on in the search options. Let us know how you get on.

  • Adobe Reader XI Installation Problem

I just performed a fresh reload of Windows XP SP3 on one of my computers. After downloading and running the installer for Adobe Reader XI I get the following error pop up:
    Internet Explorer Script Error
An Error has occurred in the script on this page.
    Line:     1
    Char:    10570
    Error:    'ActionLaunchReader' is undefined.
    Code:    0
    URL:     http://127.0.0.1:2469/app/_js/adobe.js
Again I am running Windows XP SP3 with all the patches applied, JRE 7u10 (set as the default for both IE and Firefox), and scripting is enabled in Internet Explorer. I get the exact same error when trying to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player as well, however, Adobe Shockwave installed just fine.
I am new to this forum, so forgive me if this problem has been posted before. I did not find anything similar in a search. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Adobe Reader - Interface visualization problem

I have installed Adobe reader on my PC under Win XP but as I try to open a pdf file the Acrobat interface starts to throw into a tantrum.
    The menù bar disappears.
Every menù on the menù bar comes out again only if I drag the mouse on the menù bar area. And it appears the menù that occupy the area where the arrow of my mouse lay only.
A very big grey area appears between the menù bar and the tool bar.
As I close the pdf the interface of the program works well.
What could be the cause of that problem?
    tnx in advance
and sorry for my bad english

I have the exactly the same problem, on two different PCs!
The menu bar changes it's size or position or disappears altogether (taking the window frame with it) if you move the mouse over it. Sometimes it appears blank, and you need to move the mouse over the menu items (File, Edit, etc.) for them to pop into view. Other times there is a large empty area below the menu bar, about 3 or 4 times as thick. This also pushes the status bar, horizontal scroll bar, and the bottom of the document out of view, since window size calculations don't seem to take it into account.
This doesn't happen when PDF files are opened in the internet explorer plug in, nor when you hide the menu bar.
In fact, a work-around to the problem is to press F9 twice in quick sucession - to hide then show the menu bar. It then appears correctly. It will screw up again only if you move the mouse outside the adobe reader document area (e.g. onto the desktop, or onto the window frame) and then back into the document; often you'll have to move the mouse onto the menu bar itself for the problem to recur.
If you maximize the Adobe Reader window and avoid moving the mouse to the top of the screen, then the problem won't bother you.
Clearly this is a serious bug in Adobe Reader!!!

  • Adobe Reader X creates problems w/coldfusion pdf forms

Ever since I upgraded to Adobe Reader X, I can not open any of my odf forms on my webapp.  these forms were designed with Acrobat Pro 8.0 and are prepopulated by coldfusion server.  When I browse to one since upgrade, I get the following message:
To view the full contents of this document, you need a later version of the PDF viewer. You can upgrade
to the latest version of Adobe Reader from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Obviously, I have the latest version and Acrobat 8 and Acrobat 9 readers both worked.  Is there an easy work around or a way to get rid of Acrobat X and go back?

Could you please try turning off reader X protected mode and check if you continue to see the problem?
You could turn off protected mode using following steps:
    1. Launch Reader X and select Edit->Preferences...
    2. Select General from left navigation
    3. Under application startup uncheck "Enable Protected Mode at Startup"
Note: You should switch "ON" protected mode after verifying the problem. Purpose of Reader X Protected Mode is to keep your system safe from PDF based exploits and keeping protected mode OFF will leave your system vulnerable.

  • Adobe Reader is causing problems in Windows 7

    Good morning all,
I have been doing some digging on this one and have had no joy so far. We are deploying Windows 7 in our office and I have one user, and only one who is having problems.
They had Adobe Reader X installed and they began to have problems with it after they were upgraded to WIN 7. When they went to print a PDF it started to lock their PC for 3-5 minutes after which they were able to continue with their work.
This behavior is internmittent in that it does not happen with every PDF and typically only happens once a day. Some times  it is the first PDF of the day, sometimes in the middle of the day, but once it happens it does not happen again in the same day. Sometimes the user does not experience the problem for several days. We have been unsuccessful in determining any pattern or any particular in which this users machine is environmentally different from any other users machine.
No other users are experiencing this problem.
The user has a laptop and shuts it down to take home each night and starts the box fresh in the office each day.
Lately this behavior has extended to when the user just opens a PDF. Their laptop will freeze for 3-5 minutes and then they can continue with their work.
Based upon a very few articles we have found on the subject, we have tried a couple of things without success:
We have tried clearing the Adobe Reader cache
We have uninstalled Reader X and replaced it with Reader 9x
We are hoping that someone out there who has seen something like this before and can suggest some environmental or proceedural thing that we have missed. This one is driving us crazy.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Steve

    Ooops! Sorry about thts...moving now.

  • Open Adobe Reader without Tools menu or Fill & Sign menu

    Windows 7 Ultimate SP 1 (x64)
    Adobe Reader XI 11.0.10
When I open a PDF file, I often get a menu down the right side of the Adobe Reader window.  Usually, it is the Tools menu; but if the PDF file is a fill-in form, I get the Fill & Sign Tools menu.  Rarely do I need these menus.  Is there an option to launch Adobe Reader without these menus?

We ended up finding a registry key which forces this menu to come up each time:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\AVGeneral]
    “bBrowserDisplayInReadMode”=dword:00000000

  • Adobe reader 11 installation problem

Cannot instal Adobe reader 11. Downloader starts, installation files are downloaded, message appears "installation successful", looking at the system control, installed software, surprise surprise no Adobe 11 installed!!! Tried it with Firefox, IE, to no avail. sometimes a window opens saying "the installation has not been successful". None of the advices work. De-installed Adobe 7 beforehand of course.
I'm using XP SP3, Java script enabled.
Any idea would be very appreciated.
    Rgds, fhk99

If "none of the advices work" I may be wasting my time and yours, but you can try using this tool to remove all traces of Reader:
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then, you may download the offline Reader installer from
    http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
After downloading, restart your computer and run the installer before doing anything else.
