Adobe reader 9 security problem?

Yes, i recently read about this security problem with the PDF. I would like to know what if anything has/is being done about it and does it affect all computers or just the corporate ones? I also read there was a patch coming out about this and I would like to know where and how to get it if it is necessary.

Well, don't let this scare you ... ... but a lot of software vulnerability information is out there if you just know where to look.
Probably the most definitive source is the US CERT Vulnerabilities Database which is searchable at http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/html/search.
This database is maintained by the "United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT)" at Carnegie-Mellon University. It's not the only database out there, but it's one of the best.
Another thing to bear in mind is that Adobe has many large government contracts ... a huge amount of government documentation (e.g. IRS forms) are produced using PDF. Therefore, you know that Adobe is informed when a vulnerability is discovered, and it has a positive-duty to participate in looking for them as well as resolving them. If you keep your systems up-to-date you can expect that patches for them will be timely included. (I am not, of course, saying that these expectations will invariably be met!) Software development organizations do maintain, although they do not routinely externally publish, problem/resolution databases that are integrated into their version-control systems.
Digging just a little bit deeper, I see that Adobe maintains "security advisories" among its support-page options. (I see that the CERT advisories refer to these URLs.) So, the information you are looking for is out there, and I'm sure that Adobe Support (note: I do not work for them...) can help answer specific questions ... especially if you have something like a CERT Advisory Number to refer to.
Many folks imagine that software companies try to conceal their vulnerabilities, when in fact the exact opposite is true: there is no such thing as "security by obscurity." White-hat people work very studiously to "get the word out." It is an international effort.
It can be a bit disconcerting at first to see literally thousands of reports (some open, some closed) concerning a well-established product that you use every day. Any exploit or vulnerability, realized or imagined, practical or theoretical, goes into that database: "Knowledge is Power."

You don't need Adobe AIR to download or install Adobe Reader.
Try downloading the offline installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

Adobe Reader Printing Problem

I have a PC with Windows XP SP3. When I try to print a PDF document, I get the following message: "The document could not be printed. There were no pages selected to print." Of course, I had selected the pages to print.
Recently, I had many problems with Adobe Reader 10, so I removed it and reloaded Adobe 9. Today, when this printing problem appeared, I did a restore on my computer, taking it back a few months. I still have the printing problem.
Any idea what's wrong? Any idea how to fix it?

I have Acrobat Pro 9, but the feature I am using is listed under my
printers.
If I go to Print, then in the drop-down list of printers, I have PDF -
which essentially creates a new PDF document. I don't really understand
why it worked, but it did. The Print - PDF is also available to Word,
Publisher, etc.

Adobe Reader Security Settings menu item missing

On a user PC, under Adobe Reader XI (11.0.2), I am not finding the Security Setting Menu option. I searched for this, and I found out that it must be under "Edit/Protection".

Also, I found another issue.
After I managed to create the Signature using Windows Certificate Option, I tried to take a backup from the certificate store from Internet Options -> Content -> Certificate -> Export, then I am unable to export the Private Key. Only the public key option is available, and the other option "Yes, export the Private key" is dimmed or disabled.
Is this also new feature of Adobe Reader XI?
I am 100% sure that in other installations on another PC, after I create the Windows Certificate of the Digital Signature from Adobe Reader Security Settings, then I can take a backup of this certificate from Internet Options and I can select this option "Yes, export the Private key" during export of the certificate.
Appreciate your feedback on this matter.

Adobe Reader security update to 9.3.1 not working.

I have updated adobe reader to 9.3.1 but in Secunia PSI it's still being reported as insecure.
I uninstalled adobe reader completely, cleared all traces from the registry, and reinstalled 9.3.0, and let it check for updates. it said there weren't any.
I downloaded the security fix to update it to 9.3.1 and installed it successfully.
Adobe reader now says it's 9.3.1 in the Help About option on the help menu.
However the Reader exe file AcroRd32.exe version is still 9.3.0.148 dated 21/12/2009, as are all the plugin files except for the Forms plugin that is version 9.3.1.203 dated 02/02/2010.
I have since done a successful repair install of Adobe Reader, but PSI is still saying it's insecure because of the file version 9.3.0.148 for AcroRd32.exe, and the plugin files except the Forms plugin,
Why isn't the security update to 9.3.1 updating the exe file and plugins? Is it even working at all and fixing the critical security risks it's supposed to be fixing? It would seem all it's doing is to change the Help/About screen to read 9.3.1, and changing the Forms plugin...
Running on WIndows 7 home premium.

I have same problem using Windows Vista Home Premium. Just ran Secunia and went to link and downloaded and installed 9.3.1.203, but, AcroRd31.exe still shows ver 9.3.0.148 in the Acrobe Reader files on my computer??? I do not think that the problem is solved. Apparently the update is not working correctly.

Why can't I open pdf documents after using Adobe Reader security?

I have been able to open pdfs perfectly well up until I changed the security settings on Adobe Reader. As I read somewhere that Apples have an inbuilt pdf reader I trashed everything Adobe, but still can't open pdfs. Tried using Preview to no avail.
Is there some other way of opening pdfs without reinstalling Adobe?

You didn't think of mentioning that in your first post? So it's not Adobe Reader or Preview you are having problems with. It's pdf's in your browser!
For Safari, you need to remove the adobe pdf plugins which Adobe apparently screwed up. You need to remove:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
I think you can "get away with" removing just the second one. But both for sure should allow you to open pdf's in a browser (all browsers).

Adobe Reader download problem! Pls help!

I recently did a little 'housekeeping' on my Mac to clear up some space. But I must have deleted something I shouldn't have...When I go to open Adobe Reader an error message pops up. "Adobe Reader could not install correctly" then in subtext "Adobe Reader was unable to install and must quit."
I have never had problems before. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Can you open Adobe Reader by itself? If so, try to disable Protected Mode (Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)).
If not, tell us your operating system and Reader version.

Adobe reader printing problems

Hi all,
I have created a word document, and converted it to .pdf using Cute PDF writer. When I open the document in Adobe reader 7/8 I can see the document fine and clear with all fonts and images as they should be.
The problem is when I try to print the document. When I print from Adobe 8, the font (Gill Sans MT to be specific) doesn't print correctly. Instead of getting a word with one letter after the other, all letters of that word are printing on top of each other if you get me. This can happen anywhere on the page.
However, if I open the document in Adobe reader 7 - the document prints correctly. No problems. I have tried this on a number of machines so I can safely say its not a problem with the install of the software on any of the machines. It just seems to be an incompatibility with the Adobe reader 8 software.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening or how I can get around this on Adobe reader 8?

a bug most likely. I can only see a couple of options for you. Don't use Reader 8, use a different PDF creator, or try to tweak the settings in in Cute PDF to make it embed and encode the fonts so that Reader 8 can print successfully.

Adobe Reader Installation problem

Originally I got this error message:

Tried all print options (colour, B&W, save PDF again, check rersolutions, contacted supplier of printer etc.) I could think of but no improvements
By mistake I printed the file direct from explorer view and amazingly enough TEXT OKAY !
Printed original file to CutePDF_writer and - once again - section could be read without any problem
Thought I give the free Adobe Reader a try and once again: no problem at all
Adobe Acrobat is fully updated - beside a Java flattening scripts I have not had anything modified.
Strang situation: only with the professional tool I am using very often I am unable to print as required.
Looks to me the file to be printed has some fonts not recognized / supported / missing in my Acrobat software?
When yes how can I check & resolve ?
Actually puts me in a delicate position now - help urgently needed !
Assume I have to add fonts ? But got no warning anything missing...
And: should a professional software tool not at least match options / features of a free version ?

Adobe Reader/Safari Problems

When I tried to use my Mac (Snow Leopard) to access my bank statement, I got a message that I needed to download Adobe Reader to view the statement. I already had Adobe Reader, so I tried to update it, but I got an error message (1852). I tried reinstalling and got the Installation Successful message. I checked the Internet Plugins in the Library, and the Adobe PDF Viewer Plugin was there, but I didn't see it in the Installed Plugins for Safari. I'm able to view existing PDFs with Adobe Reader, but I still can't read the bank statement on my my Mac; it works fine on our Ubuntu (Linux) computer! I also found another website that requires Adobe Reader where I was not able to view anything!
I did find this statement in an Adobe Advisory that may explain the problem:
"Adobe Reader plug-in and Acrobat plug-in are not compatible with the Safari 5.1 browser that
shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 and for 10.6. The Adobe Reader and Acrobat standalone applications
are unaffected and Safari 5.1 renders PDF documents natively. However, the Adobe Reader and
Acrobat browser plug-ins will not function as expected in LiveCycle and Acrobat workflows that

I tried reinstalling from FireFox, but I didn't have any success with that either! Anyone have any ideas about how to fix this?

I checked the Internet Plugins in the Library, and the Adobe PDF Viewer Plugin was there, but I didn't see it in the Installed Plugins for Safari.
In the "Installed Plug-ins" display it would be listed as "Adobe Acrobat Plug-in, Version 10.1.2".
I assume you remembered to relaunch Safari after you installed the plugin.

Adobe Reader X Problem signing online PDF

This issue has started a couple of weeks ago. Users are running Windows 7 and Adobe Reader X. When accessing a PDF online users are unable
to digitally sign with certificates. When trying to sign it asks them to save the document. If they save the document then it will allow them to sign, However
they are no longer working with an online document, but rather the one they saved on their desktop. They need to be able to sign on line because the form
needs to be submitted on line.
I have already checked the preferences for internet and it is selected to open pdf in a browser. When going to the security configuration the certificates from the CAC card are available and selected as sign with.
Anyone have any ideas? Our support for this issue is on another network and they are not having this issue so they are blowing us off.

it opens fine. I've edited the registery as well as uninstalled reinstalled. and Disabled protection at startu
p with no success. What can we do Adobe to fix this. The product is completley updated and it is a brand new pc

Adobe Reader XI Problem

After I was prompted to download Adobe Reader XI, installed and tried to use it, a pop up message appears stating that Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried several times and still failed. I cannot read by pdf files and what can I do?? Very, very frustrated.

restart your computer.
install the reader: http://get.adobe.com/reader/ (untick mcafee unless you're certain you want it.)

InDesign to Adobe Acrobat to Adobe Reader Link problem

Hi - I'm responsible for a long conversation about link problems in creating file links in InDesign that did not work in Acrobat. At the end of that long discussion, I thought I solved the problem, but didn't. Since then, I've been MUCH more observant.
The problem appears to take place in Adobe Reader.
My home computer on Win7 is different than my work Computer (XP), but I have the same software on both.
At work, I discovered that when I clicked on a PDF, it worked fine, that its links opened a new PDF window, but when I clicked on links on the second document, the links failed and Microsoft returned an error message telling me that I was screwed. Because I was screwed, I couldn't see what was in the path of that error.
It turns out that for some unknown reason (which you might clarify for me), my Adobe Readers are attempting to open my documents in Internet Explorer and that just won't work.
What I observed at home is that I made 5 test documents in ID, and ported them to Acrobat. As it turns out, my default for opening PDFs is Adobe Reader, which I saw on the chrome of the first document I opened. When I clicked a link, and I got the error message, I noticed my browser was up.
When I set my default for opening in Acrobat, everything worked like a charm! How about that!
Now then, what that says to me is that Adobe Reader is to be used exclusively with a browser, so if the people who are going to read your internal PDF files with Reader without those files being on a web server of some type, you are totally screwed. The only way you can use Reader is if you click on the file and bring it up directly. Don't rely on linking to other documents.
I mean, that is what it seems to me.
Now, I am creating a big project for an environment without a webserver and obviously my sense of panic is palpable. That said, I believe that all my users can read my files using Acrobat (to be tested tomorrow), which I hope means I can breathe a bit easier.
Do any of you have any thoughts on this subject? If you are really curious, I can make a packet of test files available.

Big BIG BIG bug.
Are you seeing the link commands by editing them in Acrobat? If not, try, so you can see the exact command and file or URL instruction. It still may be a bug, but you'll have better evidence when you report it here:

And, you might want to try correcting a link command in Acrobat, to see if can work for both Acrobat and Reader.

Adobe reader Firefox Problem

Thanks for the info. But i have used adobe reader plugin with chrome when i used windows 7 in another PC. And in windows7, adobe reader plugin is listed in Chrome. So i was able to save and edit forms in that system.
