Adobe Reader could not open "file"
Adobe Reader could not open "file" because it is either not a supported file or it has been damaged. All files and programs on the desktop are shown as Adobe Reader ikons. When I remove the Adobe Reader program, the desktop is ok but when I reinstall the Adobe Reader it makes a mess again on the desktop and in all programs. It seems that the Adobe Reader is somehow a default program for all applications. How do I solve that problem? Best regards Helle D.
For your first question: are you sure that 'file' is a PDF file and that it is not damaged? And you may find this useful for your second question:

Adobe Reader could not open -.because it is not a supported file type
I'm using Safari 6.1 and Adobe Reader 11.0.04. Since (I think) the last Safari update I have had "Adobe Reader blocked for this website" and "Adobe Reader could not open (file) because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged"
I have re-installed Adobe Flash player and the ".....blocked site...." problem appears to be resolved however I get the "...not a supported file type..." message when I try to open the download.
This appears to be a problem with Safari. If I use Google Chrome to download and then open the saved file everything works ok.
Has anyone got any ideas to try, please?welldo wrote:

I had the same "Adobe Reader blocked for this website" problem which was becoming very annoying.
Managed to resolve it by going;
Safari-Preferences-Security-Manage Website Settings-Select Adobe Reader from left Colomn-change bottom right "when visiting other websites" to "Allow".
Worked for me, hopefully will for others. -
PDF won't open on Mac with Adobe Reader Error message:Adobe Reader could not open
I have Adobe Reader 10.1.3 for Mac, (10.7.3) and am having problems opening pdfs. I get an error message: Adobe Reader could not open file name.pdf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). The files are not from emails, but are from websites, government sites, professional organizations etc.) Help! Adobe is no help!
Manually download the files to your computer (right-click on the url). When the file is downloaded to your computer do you get the same message when you try to open in Reader through the File->Open menu? What about when you open the file in Mac's Preview application?

Error message - "Adobe Reader could not open....
I have Vista and I have Adobe 8.1.2 and I can not open PDF files. All I get is "Adobe Reader could not open "file name" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)." I can send the same email to my work email and open the file just fine so I know the attachment is okay. Does anyone else have this error and if so have you been able to resolve it?
Thank you!I too am getting this message every time I try to open a pdf. I am running XP on both my laptop and desktop. Ever since I updated to Adobe 8.2 I have gotten the message. I can still open them on another desktop I have that is still running with adobe 5. I have even tried to uninstall 8.2 and reinstall 5 but it will still give me the same message. What do I need to do to resolve this issue?

I coach youth soccer and use a PDF template to save my sessions in. Today I got this message when trying to open one of my sessions.

Why can't I open a pdf file on my desktop? I have Adobe Reader and running OS 10.10.1 I keep getting the same message: "Adobe Reader could not open '8pdk_96_4.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."
I tried that.
I saved the file 8pdk_96_4.pdf to my desktop and tried to open it using Adobe Reader but I get the same message: Adobe Reader could not open '8pdk_96_4.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). -
Adobe Reader could not open a pdf file - either not supported file type or file damaged
On March 5th, I started getting the Adobe Reader error message "Adobe Reader could not open a pdf file because it is either not supported file type or the file has been damaged.
I get this when I try to open the pdf file as an attachment in Outlook 2013 from my G-Mail account. If I save the attachment and then try to open the pdf document, I get the same error4.
I get this error message with every pdf file that now comes to me in Outlook.
If I log on to my G-Mail I am able to open the pdf document. If I also save the attachment to my computer, I do not get the error message when I open the pdf file. This would suggest the file is okay
This would lead me to believe the problem maybe with Outlook.
I'm using Adobe Reader XI v11.0.10
I'm using Windows 8.1
Is anyone encountering this same issue with outlook?I copied it again. Do you see it? BTW, how do I set privacy? (I'm new at this)

Adobe Reader could not open 'images rest 12-4.jpg' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
that is the message how do i correct this problemIt sounds like your file associations are messed up and Reader is trying to open your .jpg files. Is this correct?
If so, you just need to change the associations to choose what application opens them. Here's how: Change File Associations in Mac OS X -
I have a website that holds 23 different PDF's. They all download fine and open correctly when downloading from a Mac computer. They even download and open fine from a Mobile Phone. However my client is getting an error over and over again. I have tested it out and this is what I have come up with.
Error:
Adobe Reader could not open 'filename.pdf'" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been corrupted (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)
I have resaved the PDF's to be compatible with Reader 6.
Works fine with
All Mac's using either Firefox, Chrome or Safari using Pro and Reader
iPhone downloads using iBook
PC's when downloading from Firefox viewing in Reader 9
PC's when downloading from IE 6.0 view on Reader 8
Error Message When

After saved to computer, Adobe Reader could not open 'filename.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
What is your operating system? Reader version?
Saved from where? What is the file size of the saved document? -
Tried to download Firefox 4 for Macintosh three time and could not prevent Adobe Reader from interfering.
The following document should help: Error: Adobe Reader could not open '*.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and was not correctly decoded.)
Please update this thread if your issue is resolved.
Thanks,
Shashi
