Adobe Reader does not fully shut down

After closing all PDF documets, Adobe Reader remains open. The Processes Tab in Windows Task Manager typically lists multiple instances of AcroRd32.exe after I close all PDF files. If I open a new PDF file, the PRocesses tab shows two instances of AcroRd32.exe. What causes this? What is the fix for this?
Windows Vista Home Premium (32), SP2, Adobe Reader 10.1.4 (latest download availabe from the adobe web site.
Thanks

Hi Pat,
Thank you for the information and the patches.
I installed them, one at a time, rebooted, and tested the outcomes.
10.1.5 – Adobe had run Adobe Distiller when I rebooted and checked Task Manager. This is the first I have seen Distiller listed in a long time. I opened an Adobe file. This added two instances of AcroRd32.exe to Task Manager. I closed the Adobe file. The two instances remained in Task Manager. I opened another PDF file without clearing the instances from Task Manager. This added two more instances of AcroRd32.exe to Task Manager.
With only 10.1.15 installed and after doing some other things, I retested Adobe Reader.  This time, when I closed the PDF either by the X in the upper right hand corner of the file or by File / Exit from the menu, Adobe Reader shut down completely and did not leave any instances of AcroRd32.exe in Task Manager.
10.1.16 – Could not find this patch file. Instead received this message in Firefox:
The requested URL /pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.1.6/misc/AdbeRdrUpd1016.msp was not found on this server.
Received a similar message in Internet Explorer
10.1.17 – Downloaded, installed, and rebooted PC. Did not see an instance of Acrobat Distiller in Task Manager after the reboot.
Opened a PDF file – two instances in AcroRd32.exe in Task Manager. Without closing the first PDF file, opened another PDF.  Momentarily saw two more instances of AcroRd.exe in Task Manager. Then they disappeared. Closed one PDF file using the X. Two instances remained. Closed the second file. Adobe Reader shut down completely and cleared both instances from Task Manager.
Not sure what had been going on. For now, things seem to operate about as they should.
Thank you, again, Pat. This will help keep my PC from hanging up after I view several PDF files. At times I have had 16 or 18 instances of the executable listed in Task Manager. That really slows down the PC.
Kind regards,
Jon Bergeson

  • Adobe Reader does not fully open

Adobe Reader does not fully open - it starts and then disappears - windows 7 - nothing is new

    Yes, nothing is new...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
If you cannot open Reader by itself, try to disable Protected Mode in the registry; download, unzip, then run the registry script from https://workspaces.acrobat.com/?d=8yDBdUZCTE9FUcJJjZzHvQ
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Ff 33 does not fully shut down

    Very annoying.
    Please help

    Hello,
Try opening in [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] and see if the browser closes properly after opening in that. Safe mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes). Since Firefox has trouble closing, make sure that it is not running in your Task Manager before opening in Safe Mode.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>
    [[Image:Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win]]
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds.''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

  • ThinkpadYoga does not fully shut down or restart, only display off.

    hello lenovo helpers community
Everytime I want to shut down or restart my Thinkpad Yoga (11e, running on Win 8.1. Pro), it doesn't fully shut down. The display turns off, but the red LED light remains on and I can hear the vents running.
No matter how long I wait, it doesn't turn off. I always have to force the shut down with the power button on the side. This is really no solution.
I have tried a couple of things that are recommended online, but so far, nothing helped.
Examples of things I tried: power button options, energy options, registry, cmd shutdown -s -f -t 5, scanned virus etc., looked at the autorun list, registry scan (although I didn't really have high hopes on that one), updated all drivers and Win 8.1. Pro, ..
    Please help me, thank you!
    Best, Isa

    hello again
well, I don't mean to offend anyone, I'm really sorry if I did! The mere fact that you took the time to reply tells me that you care a lot about this. So I will take the time to set this straight, as well.
I did only have the experience with the German customer service hotline which, too, might be a factor. When living in the States for a couple of years I learned what service was truly all about, coming back here (to Germany) wasn't easy
Either way, I base my feelings about the German Lenovo CS not on the fact whether or not they could help me, but on how easy it was to reach someone who would try to fix my laptop for more than just five minutes and how fast I was asked to send the laptop in, especially after I told them that that would be the last option (I live in the countryside and getting to the next post office or Lenovo service partner would require at least a 2 hour drive and I don't have a car).
The M.Windows CS was nice and actually took 2 hours (!!) to figure out what was wrong via remote control, and gave me a couple of numbers to call in the area, that might be able to send someone over. So, although he couldn't help me, I felt like he really tried and took my situation into account.
I agree, that the final issue was hard to guess and also that it is weird that error notices were disabled. No one really knows though. Maybe just one with a hickup
I will not give up on lenovo though, promise

  • Satellite A100 does not "really" shut down

    Hey everybody!
I have a Satellite A100 here and the problem is ... yeah, it does not really shut down. I can choose "Shut Down" in Windows and Windows shuts down, the monitor turns black and the notebook does not work anymore, but it does not turn off itself. The blue lights are still glowing. To switch off the system I have to push the on-off-switch for a few seconds.
The problem occured three days ago. I don't think it's a virus (someone on the net assumed that), because the system has no connection to the internet and has'nt seen any usb-stick or whatever for at least half a year. The user told me he changed the energy-options from "Toshiba Power Saver" to "Desktop". Of course I changed it back, but this did'nt solve the problem. I also did'nt find anything helpful in the options. Anyone out there who knows the problem or knows what to do? :-)
    Greetins,
    coincidence

Unfortunately, I can't. I choose "Shut down" in safe-mode and the operating system does a simple reboot. The notebook does not turn off at all.
Thanks so far. :) Merry Christmas!

  • Adobe Reader does not recognize file name (filename10.5.11.pdf) but does in Adobe Standard 9.  Why?

I post documents to our Intranet site and found out recently that Adobe Reader does not recognize certain file names in PDF files.  For instance,  when trying to open a PDF file with the name
filename10.5.11.pdf  in Adobe Reader, the web browser will not open the PDF and the display is blank.   When I'm using another computer with Adobe Standard 9, I do not have a problem opening the file.
I would like to know if anyone else has had a similar issue and why Reader will not recognize the file name and Standard does.

The version is Adobe Reader 10.1.0    I will request the latest version
and let you know if that fixes the problem
Actually I had changed the name of the file so our associates could access
the file (changed the  .  to a hyphen)  It still made me wonder why Reader
wouldn't open it at that time.
Thanks again for you assistance and I will let you know if this resolves
    the  issue.
    Regards,
    Susan

    Hi Susan,
    Thanks for providing the information.
Could you also let me know what is the exact version of Adobe Reader on
your system. You can check the same y clicking on Help > About Adobe
    Reader X.
In case its not 10.1.1, please try updating to the latest version and see
    if the problem persists.
Also, does any other PDF with a different filename open in Internet
    Explorer correctly?
    Thanks
    Ankit

  • Adobe Reader Does Not Respond in Windows 8

I need to do a simple edit of a pdf. I've been editing pdfs using nothing but the free Adobe reader for years. Now I got a new laptop - 64 bit Windows 8 and I installed the current reader. I need the Adobe reader for other programs I work with.  I have noticed that the adobe reader is slow to open and constantly says "not responding." I also cannot get it to respond so that I can fill in a form (i.e., a basic edit), which I could always do.  Please tell me how to fix this!

I figured it out!  I have Adobe Reader XI on my desktop. I opened it up. I went to Edit/Preferences/Security (Enhanced) and disabled the "Protected Mode at startup." My Adobe pdfs now respond and I can edit them without issue.

  • Adobe Reader does not appear as a choice when I click on a PDF in email

When I open an email that has a PDF, then I click on the "Open With", Adobe Reader does not appear as a choice. I use an IPhone 4S.

Is your phone updated to iOS6?
When I press on the PDF icon at the bottom of an email message on the iPhone, I get a screen which shows "Open in Adobe Reader" along with icons of other readers I have installed which read PDF files.
    Looks like this:

  • Windows 8 Adobe Reader will not fully open a pdf compiled with several pdf's into one - why?

Windows 8 Adobe Reader will not fully open a pdf compiled with several pdf's into one - why?

    Hi Michael,
“AdbeRdr11003_en_US.exe” is the download installed on our CEO’s new Windows 8 laptop.  It is a Dell XPS Re: Windows 8 Adobe Reader will not fully open a pdf compiled with several pdf's into one - why? Dell XPS 13" .  It has a full install Windows 8 Professional for its’ Operating System.
I’ll attempt to attach the file in question.  The file opens fine on our Windows 7, and XP computers (with  the proper Adobe Reader on each).
Our CEO says there is a message that comes up saying he needs Adobe Flash.  I’m attempting to find out whether or not he is trying to open it the ‘Metro’ view, or the ‘Desktop’ view – no answer yet.
If your system strips the attachment, let me know, and I’ll upload the file to an ftp site {if necessary}.

  • When I long hold a doc open with adobe reader does not appear

When I long tap on a doc to open ; open with adobe reader does not appear

Which app did you start with?  Apple Mail, Safari, iBooks or something else?
Is a PDF document already open in other app?  If so, you can tap the PDF document to display a toolbar in the app.  Do you see the icon like this in the toolbar?
You can tap the icon to open a popup then tap "Open in..." or "Open in Adobe Reader".  You may need to scroll to the right to find the red icon with "Open in Adobe Reader".
In Safari, tap "Open in..." (blue text) in the top toolbar, instead.
If you see something else on the screen, please let us know the name of the app.

  • Adobe Reader does not print more than 5 pages Toshiba E-Studio 232 in Windows 7

Adobe Reader does not print more than 5 pages Toshiba E-Studio 232 in Windows 7.
I contacted Microsoft representatives said the problem is the Acrobat Reader once all other applications print without problems.
    Please help me!

We have the same problem with our TOSHIBA e-STUDIO6540C. We've tried different versions of adobe reader, even acrobat and many times it will only print some pages of any given document. Did you find a solution? To me it sounds like a toshiba issue but just wondering.

  • Google search box in mid screen accepts text but is inactive. Adobe reader does not now function with Firefox. Both are new since update. Thanks

    1. The google search box in the middle of the FF page accepts text but is not active since my update. The search bar box works.
    2. Adobe reader does not seem to work with the new update. eg. Epost suggested I update Reader which I did but it still doesn't work. New since update. It works with Safari which I dislike or i would simply change.
    Thanks
    David

Does that box still Shows the Google text?
Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
Current Firefox versions use the default search engine (pref: browser.search.defaultenginename) to set the search engine that is used on the about:home page.
Check the <b>browser.search.defaultenginename</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page and make sure that it is set to the default value Google.
    *browser.search.defaultenginename
You can check if you still have the XML files of the default search engines including Google in the searchplugins folder in Firefox program folder.
If not then you need to reinstall Firefox.

  • Adobe Reader does not see all network printers

    Hi,
Any help on below would be greatly appreciated
    Thank you
    Issue:
When printing from Adobe Reader not all network printers appear in the list of printers
All other applications (notepad, word, excel, powerpoint) see all printers and are able to print
    Tried:
Drivers: Xerox model specific drivers, universal drivers, global print drivers
    Print Processors: Xerox, winprint
    Remapped / added printers

I also have this problem that Adobe Reader will not print, but this only occurred for me after installation of MS Office 2010.
The proposed solution of changing default printers does not work for me!
Does anybody have a real explanation as to what causes this problem and a real solution for it?
I have already tried re-installing Adobe Reader 9.3.4 and this had no effect. I am using Windows XP with SP3.
    thanks for any help ....
