Adobe Reader freezes all browsers when opening a url to a PDF containing form fields...

There is an issue we are currently experienceing with Adobe Acrobat 9 (updated to the latest version) where ALL BROWSERS (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari) on each of two different systems (a MacBook Pro with Mac OSX Leopard and a Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows Vista) where the application will freeze up and crash the browser when we view a .pdf file from a url if the .pdf file iteself contains form fields.
At first I though it may have been specific to Mac OSX and this MacBook we were trying to view the document on, but the same issue is now occuring with a new Sony Vaio laptop (running Windows Vista) as well.
It seems like it is able to open .pdf documents containing form fields when they are stored locally, but when trying to access them via a url, the program will freeze up.  Sometimes it will eventually work if you had previously opened a .pdf prior to opening it via the url link and sometimes it doesn't.  And it seems to only be related to .pdfs containing fillable form fields (others open fine when accessing them by a url)
Obviously it's become quite irratating and I'm hopeing I can find some insight on this support forum as to what may be causing this issue.
Previous versions of Acrobat (installed on the MacBook) opened this very same .pdf file (url) fine before upgrading to version 9.
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

  • Adobe Reader 11 - error message when opening PDF's

I have an iMac OSx.  Using Adobe Reader 11.  Everytime I open a PDF I get "an internal error has occured"  I was trying to uninstall Adobe Reader 11 but the uninstaller in my Applications/Utilities is not there.  HELP!!

  • Adobe Reader 9.x crashes when opening some pdf files that work fine with Adobe Reader 8.x

Adobe Reader 9 crashes when opening approximately 10% to 20% of the pdfs in my collection. The remaining 80% to 90% work without problems. The pdfs are launched by double-clicking the pdf file from Windows Explorer. The crashes occur with both v9.0 and v9.1. The pdfs that crash in v9.x work fine in older versions of Adobe Reader, such as v8.1.3. Furthermore, this behavior also occurs on all 3 virtual machine hosted on the same physical machine, with default Adobe Reader settings, for both v9.0 and v9.1. The virtual machines have little running in memory except standard Windows executables - i.e. they are fairly pristine. The operating systems for the virtual machines are XP SP3, XP SP2, and Windows Server 2003.
Error message info in all cases:
    app=acrord32.exe
    app version=9.1.0.163
    module=jp2klib.dll
    module version=2.0.0.2579
    offset=0003277d
Operating system for real computer: XP SP3
CPU: 1333 MHz Athlon single core
    RAM: 1 GB
To sum up, this problem happens on both a real computer running XP SP3, and also on all 3 virtual machines hosted on the same physical computer. I tried changing the Reader setting to not use hardware rendering, to no avail. I also tried various Data Execution Prevention settings in Windows, to no avail. All operating systems, the real and virtual ones, do not have problems with other programs that I use. I also tried a second machine with Adobe Reader v9.1 and the same exact problem pdfs, and had no issues. Thus, the problem happens on only one of the computers, but on the real and 3 virtual operating systems on that machine. There were no errors reported during any of the Reader installations. The virtual machines had no prior versions of Reader prior to Reader installation.

    I did further testing of 10 single page pdf files which I created from a single book. All 5 pdf files with images crashed in Reader v9.1. 0 of the 5 pdf files without images crashed in Reader v9.1. Reader v8.1.4 crashes on none of the 10 pdfs. Note that the crash always occurs in jp2klib.dll, which according to the file property description is 'JPEG2000 Core Library', which deals with images. So it seems the issue is in Adobe's jp2klib.dll, in combination with the hardware/software that I have. I used Microsoft's DirectX Diagnostic Tool to test DirectX, including visual tests of DirectDraw and Direct3D - everything worked as expected with no issues detected.<br /><br />Some information about my hardware:<br />Display drivers=Nvidia v84.21<br />Video card=GeForce FX 5200 with 128 MB RAM<br />CPU=AMD Athlon (single core)<br />System RAM=1024 MB in 3 DIMMs<br /><br />Further information about my hardware: (from the program System Information for Windows)<br /><br />Motherboard:<br />Manufacturer=ASUSTeK Computer INC.<br />Model=<A7V133><br />Version=REV 1.xx<br />Chipset Vendor=VIA Technologies Inc<br />Chipset Model=VT8363/5 KT133/KM133 System Controller<br />South Bridge=82C686B PCI to ISA Bridge<br />CPU=AMD Athlon<br />Cpu Socket=Slot A / Socket A [SOCKET A]<br />System Slots=5 PCI, 1 AGP<br />OnBoard devices=<unknown> (Disabled) Promise PDC20265<br />     <br />Memory Summary:<br />Location=System board or motherboard<br />Maximum Capacity=1536 MBytes<br />Memory Slots=3<br />Error Correction=None<br />Use=System memory<br /><br />CPU Info:<br />Number of CPU(s)=One Physical Processor / One Core / One Logical Processor<br />Vendor=AuthenticAMD<br />CPU Full Name=AMD Athlon<br />CPU Name=AMD Athlon(tm) Processor<br />CPU Code Name=Thunderbird<br />Technology=0.18µ<br />Platform Name=Slot A / Socket A<br />Type=Original OEM processor<br />FSB Mode=DDR<br />Type ID=0<br />CPU Clock=1323.68<br />L2 Cache Speed=1323.68 MHz<br />L2 Cache Speed=Full<br />CPU Family / Model / Stepping=6 / 4 / 4<br />L1 I-Cache=64 KB<br />L1 D-Cache=64 KB<br />L2 Cache=256 KB<br />RDMSR=00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000<br />MMX=Yes<br />MMX+=Yes<br />SSE=No<br />SSE2=No<br />SSE3=No<br />SSE4A=No<br />3DNow!=Yes<br />3DNow!+=Yes<br />DualCore=No<br />HyperThreading=No<br />AMD64=No<br />NX=No<br />VT=No<br />PowerNow!=No<br />LongHaul=No<br />LongRun=No<br />Architecture=x86<br /><br />Video:<br />AdapterCompatibility=NVIDIA<br />AdapterDACType=Integrated RAMDAC<br />AdapterRAM=128 MBytes<br />Availability=3<br />Caption=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />ConfigManagerErrorCode=0<br />ConfigManagerUserConfig=false<br />CurrentBitsPerPixel=32<br />CurrentHorizontalResolution=1280<br />CurrentNumberOfColors=4294967296<br />CurrentNumberOfColumns=0<br />CurrentNumberOfRows=0<br />CurrentRefreshRate=60<br />CurrentScanMode=4<br />CurrentVerticalResolution=1024<br />Description=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />DeviceID=VideoController1<br />DeviceSpecificPens=-1<br />DriverDate=20060309212900.000000-000<br />DriverVersion=6.14.10.8421<br />InfFilename=oem6.inf<br />InfSection=nv4_NV3x<br />InstalledDisplayDrivers=nv4_disp.dll<br />MaxRefreshRate=75<br />MinRefreshRate=60<br />Monochrome=false<br />Name=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />NumberOfColorPlanes=1<br />PNPDeviceID=PCI\VEN_10DEDEV_0322SUBSYS_91101462REV_A1\49AEDED500008<br />Status=OK<br />VideoArchitecture=5<br />VideoMemoryType=2<br />VideoModeDescription=1280 x 1024 x 4294967296 colors<br />VideoProcessor=GeForce FX 5200<br />BitsPerPel=32<br />DeviceName=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />DisplayFlags=0<br />DisplayFrequency=60<br />LogPixels=96<br />PelsHeight=1024<br />PelsWidth=1280<br />SettingID=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />SpecificationVersion=1025<br />BitsPerPixel=32<br />ColorPlanes=1<br />DeviceEntriesInAColorTable=-1<br />HorizontalResolution=1280<br />RefreshRate=60<br />VerticalResolution=1024<br />VideoMode=1280 by 1024 pixels, True Color, 60 Hertz<br />Video Bios Version=Version 4.34.20.22.00 <br />Video Bios Date=04/28/03<br />Name=GeForce FX 5200<br />Chip Type=GeForce FX 5200<br />DAC Type=Integrated RAMDAC<br />Memory=128 MBytes<br /><br />BIOS:<br />BIOS Version=ASUS   - 30303031, Award Medallion BIOS v6.0, Award Plug and Play BIOS Extension v1.0A, Award Modular BIOS v6.0<br />BIOS Date=04/23/02<br />BIOS Web Page=http://www.award.com<br />BIOS Vendor=Award Software, Inc.<br />Version=ASUS A7V-133 ACPI BIOS Revision 1009<br />Release=04/23/2002<br />BIOS Size=256 KB<br /><br />Memory:<br />Location=System board or motherboard<br />Maximum Capacity=1536 MBytes<br />Memory Slots=3<br />Error Correction=None<br />Use=System memory<br />Maximum Memory Module Size=1024 MBytes<br />Device Set=DIMM 1<br />Device Locator=DIMM 1<br />Capacity=256 MBytes<br />Memory Type=Synchronous DRAM<br />Data Width=64 bits<br />Form Factor=DIMM<br />Total Width=72 bits<br />Device Locator=DIMM 2<br />Capacity=256 MBytes<br />Memory Type=Synchronous DRAM<br />Data Width=64 bits<br />Form Factor=DIMM<br />Total Width=72 bits<br />Device Locator=DIMM 3<br />Capacity=512 MBytes<br />Memory Type=Synchronous DRAM<br />Data Width=64 bits<br />Form Factor=DIMM<br />Total Width=72 bits

  • Adobe reader not doing anything when opening PDFs

Hi, I have a client who's currently having trouble with their Adobe reader. They have many issues however I suspect they all lead back to the same issue and sorting one should sort them all. The first issue was that when double clicking/right click opening PDFs, nothing would happen no matter what method you used. When I checked the processes in task manager though, it turns out they were opening it's just that they weren't actually visible and I had no way to access them. This has also carried over to other software that this client uses and they can't see PDFs in them even though they actually are open. It's quite tough to explain but I was hoping someone could lend a hand with this, thanks!

    Hi Adam.Sedgwick,
What other applications is your client using to view PDFs? As far as Reader goes, it sounds like a reinstall may be in order. What version of Reader is your client using, and what operating system? If he or she hasn't already upgraded to Acrobat Reader DC, I would start there. Remove whatever version is currently installed, and then install the latest version from this page: Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions.
Please let us know how it goes.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Adobe reader has stopped working when opening tracker [vista & reader x]

    Hello all,
I'm a developer and im constantly uninstalling and reinstalling reader x and acrobat pro x, but i typically have both installed.  Recently, i uninstalled both reader x and acrobat x via Add/Remove Programs in windows Vista, and then later reinstalled them both, and now when i click the adobe tracker icon in my systray, it says adobe reader has stopped working.  I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling and then rebooting, but that doesn't seem to help.  Event viewer says:
Faulting application AcroRd32.exe, version 10.0.1.434, time stamp 0x4d456f48, faulting module mshtml.dll, version 9.0.8080.16413, time stamp 0x4d4cefa9, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x002be0d0, process id 0x1674, application start time 0x01cc04f02e5354a8.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks!

This is strange. Can you try a couple of things:
    1. Try launching Tracker in Acrobat. In Acrobat X, you will find it in Comment pane->Review->Track Reviews
    2. Launch Reader in non-sandbox mode. For this, launch Reader and uncheck the option 'Enable Protected Mode at startup' in Reader Preferences->General. Close and re-launch Reader. Now launch Tracker.
Does it still crash in both the cases?

  • Adobe Reader 9.1 Crashes when opening 2 pdfs

When I open 1 pdf file with the reader, it is fine and works normally. However as soon as I attempt to open another one, it crashes.
I am using windows vista 32 bit

I get the same issue if I double click on one PDF file on my drive and then double click on a second PDF file also on my drive, the second one does not open and eventually I get an error message saying that Adobe reader has encountered a problem and will close.
If I use File=> Open then I can open as many PDF files as I wish with no problems

  • Adobe Reader changes graphic properties when opened

Everytime I open up a pdf, the graphics go from Highest quality to 8 bit.  Only happens with pdf's opened in Acrobat Reader X.
No other issues to report on the system.
    System is running WinXP Pro
    Intel Graphics G965
    Adobe Reader X
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Is this happening only with a specific PDF or with all the PDFs? Also, does launching the application alone also produce the same behavior?
Also, please let me know the exact version of Adobe Reader installed on your system. You can find the same by clicking on Help > About Adobe Reader.

  • Adobe Reader 10 gets focus when openning a document via SAPGUI

    Hi
I have SAP GUI application where is displayed PDF file. When PDF is open it gets the screen focus and function keys are not active. I found this http://forums.adobe.com/thread/392940 but it's from 2007. Anybody know if there is something new about this issue?

Thank you for the reply :-)
Unfourtenetly we cannot just restore focus afterwards. Our command window sends messages asynchronsly to a mainframe system, to find the documents we want to display. The mainframe system posts the documents one after another to a message queue. Our application displays the documents when they arrive on the message queue. This can take up to 10 seconds, if we have to display many documents. Therefore we cannot switch focus forth and back for each document. Also we do not know when Adobe Reader have finished displaying a document, so we do not know how long time to wait, until setting back the focus.

  • Adobe Reader 8 gets focus when opening a document via DDE

We have an application that incorporates Adobe Reader. The application consists of two windows. In one window the user can enter commands, which causes Adobe Reader to display a document in the other window.
Until now, we have used DDE commands to call Adobe Reader 6. This worked fine for the user, as focus stayed in the command window, which meant that the user could issue a number of commands, without having to regain focus.
We have just installed Adobe Reader 8 on our machines and now Adobe Reader steals the focus, every time a DDE command is sent.
Is there a setting we can change to stop Adobe Reader from stealing focus or is there a work around that we can use to avoid the problem?
    Thank you in advance :-)
    Best Regards

  • Adobe Reader 9.x crashes when opening PDF's created using Office 2007

I work on the helpdesk side for a big corporation and many of our users are reporting that when they try to open a PDF, it locks up their Internet Explorer or Reader 9.x
We noticed that the problems were only caused by PDFs that were presentations created in PowerPoint, then saved as a PDF with the Office 2007 Save as PDF plugin. So what we did was engaged an engineer at Microsoft to look into the issue.  They did a lot of troubleshooting and narrowed it down.
They think that if the presentation was created using PP 2003 then opened in PP 2007 then saved as a PDF then this causes AR 9.x to crash.  So what they did was remove the slide number, and added a new slide number using PP 2007, save it as a PDF then it opens in AR 9.x
All other versions of AR can open the PDF under the same scenario.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    Thanks

It's almost identical to what you posted. I think the difference was that I was trying on a machine with complete install of Acrobat which has the font packs and hence there was no hang/crash. Your file doesn't hang on that machine either.
If you look at the fonts panel in your document: File>Properties>Fonts, you'll notice that it uses MS-PGothic font which is a Japanese fonts, and hence the Japanese font pack might fix this.
Also, since you mentioned ACE.dll, the other possibility might be that there are conflicting DLLs on the system, commonly referred to as DLL Hell. Another thing to try would be to search the system for ACE.dll and see which all software install it.

  • I installed a free 30 day subscription of adobe reader X1 and I want to try to edit a pdf.  The program keeps taking me back to a link to buy it?? how do I use it?

how do i use my free 30 day trial of adobe reader x1?? when i try to edit a pdf it just asks me to buy the program?

I think your problems may come down to mixing up two completely different programs.
    1. Adobe Reader. This is FREE. There is no subscription or trial. However, there are add-on subscriptions called ExportPDF and PDF Pack. There is no trial for these either.
    2. Adobe Acrobat. This is NOT FREE and has a 30 day free trial.
My guess is that you have downloaded the free trial for Adobe Acrobat, but are continuing to actually run Adobe Reader. Look closely at which app you are using, and start it with the START button (Windows) or Launch Pad (Mac). DON'T JUST DOUBLE CLICK ON A PDF.

Once again, my thanks for your assistance. If I may impose on your generosity one more time, if I understand you correctly if I create a document on Word or WordPerfect, print it and scan it to create a pdf, the search function will not work. But, if I create the pdf document in Word the search function will work. Unfortunately, I am not sure how I create a pdf document in Word other than by printing it and scanning it. Could you please explain.

Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there.

  • Adobe reader XI stops working when activated, and locks up my shockwave plugins

Does anyone know why Reader XI locks up when opening the program or any file.
What's worse, is when I install Reader, even from an upgrade/update, my shockwave plugins on my browsers, all of them (IE, Chrome, Mozilla, etc.) stop working correctly.  It requires a full uninstall of the program to get shockwave working correctly again.
I know Reader XI is supposed to be more compatible with shockwave, but this isn't working right on my computer.  I've tried plenty of advice from other forums first, but this is the last staw.  I would like to have Reader, but will settle for an older version if I can get one.
Any suggestions?  Or is this program a lost cause?

*Chrome v38.0.2125.104m; runs Adobe Flash Player - Version: 15.0.0.189
Some video will run for a few seconds, then stop.  Actually loads video from the main site page, but hangs and never plays video in youtube. Then when trying to load random vids, the commercial freezes and the vid never plays.
    I have IE v.11.0.9600.17351
    *IE 11: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
when I run the online test to check the player, it says, You have version 15,0,0,189 installed; runs the animation correctly.
    https://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/
This Test Adobe Shockwave Player does not run. Either in chrome or IE11.   IE11 shows an icon for 12.1.3r153 and says installation complete, but no animation.
*I also have the progam, Flash professional CS6; v.12.0.2.529; and this shouldn't be causing any problems since the problem is primarily with Reader and my browser plugins.
*Adobe Application manager started updating after encountering problems.  Then ran to completion and restarted.
However, after the restart, with Reader XI was still installed, and the youtube videos and ad’s play just fine.
But with another restart, the reader XI is showing installed through the control panel/programs/ programs and features, but when I search for the program it does not list in the search.
So I have to go to the c:/program files (x86)/adobe/reader 11.0/reader/acrord32.exe.  It still loads the program, then locks/freezes into “not responding.”
And now that I’ve tried to use the Reader XI program, youtube videos or ads won’t respond again. News sites, with adobe shockwave player won’t run in IE 11 and hangs with site not responding.  Chrome, youtube ads run, but the video hangs/stops after a second of loading.  Chrome news sites show shockwave flash plugin isn’t responding, then goes to a message for Page(s) unresponsive. In which case I have to kill the page to get the “he’s dead, jim!” message… either chrome ran out of memory or was terminated for some other reason… option/reload. And I get the option to stop the shockwave plug-in.  When I stop the plugin and reload the news page, then it starts all over again with page unresponsive….
Mozilla, same thing with youtube, I can link to a channel, then the vid loads, but hangs/freezes after a second. This program does not show the ad at the top of the main youtube page, so I can’t test that. But when I link to random vids, the option to install the plugin needed to display the media for the page is available, and it wants to install… flash.
I tried to install and got the “no plugins were installed.” For Adobe Flash Player – not available – manual install required.  Which the manual option takes me to the get.adobe.com/flashplayer  page for Adobe flash player v15.0.0.189.  Which I know I already have. But I run it anyway.  I run the adobe flash player installer exe file, and after completion, I go to the adobe.com/software/flash/about  and get the repeat to install flash again.
So once again, I’ve run the circle back to itself to find that when Adobe Reader XI is installed, I can’t play adobe shockwave browser plugin content.  Nor can I run Adobe flash player content through the browsers. All three that I tested, because I don’t want to test it with the other three I have available.
But I did get this new message from youtube after trying to run a random vid.  “shockwave flash may be busy, or it may have stopped responding…” There was more, but the Mozilla browser shut down automatically while I was typing this so I couldn’t finish the message.
When I tried to restart Firefox, I got “firefox is already running, but is not responding.  To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.”
And of course, task manager showed that Firefox was not actually running. So I will have to restart my system.
I will uninstall Reader XI one more time, and check to see if these programs work again.
After uninstall, the browsers began working videos and ads again, with the except of a news page in both firefox and chrome, which adobe flash shockwave plugin still isn’t running correctly with these two browsers. So that begins a new question about Shockwave player plugins and compatibility with Adobe Reader.  Since Shockwave isn’t working correctly anyway, I’m going to assume this might be the problem with Adobe Reader.  It's why I started trying to learn why my browsers wouldn't play shockwave content to begin with.  But the Reader and Shockwave plugins are clearly incompatible.
I have not yet tried to uninstall Kaspersky, but will try that later today.
