Adobe reader hangs (no response) after opening

I have tried both versions 10 and 11.  Either one will hang after the program opens with or without a file to read.  It appears to be trying to access something (the internet?) but never completes that op and will not respond to any command after that.  I am running windows 7 and I have current Java installed as well.  Uninstalling and reinstalling from different reader source sites did not help.

That may be the actual problem (trying to access files that are no longer on a connected drive at program startup) since the reader page
shows several recently opened documents, some on a flash drive which I no longer have available. Reducing the number of documents recently used to 1 sounds like a good workaround except that my Reader X will not open at all. It never times out in its search for files to
check (if that's what it is doing) so I can't get to edit preferences.
Note: this program is supposed to be a universal tool to use freely. As such, it should be simple enough to be bullet proof and always work ..... like a sonic screwdriver, when you need it you really need it to work! As it is now, I do not want to see any new PDF documents. If I have to open one, I go to one of the other PDF reader programs. Even with all their bugs and ********, they do work on MOST files. Way better that Adobe. I wish I had paid for Reader just so I could call them up and cuss them out for selling such junk.
Oh and thanks for the tip anyway, mea culpa.

  • Adobe Reader 11 Closes Seconds After Openeing

I have Adobe Reader 11 and it will open for a few second and then close automatically. I have windows 7. I have used Adobe's cleaning tool to remove all traces of the reader and then restarted my computer. I downloaded it again and reinstalled the reader. I restart my computer. I still have the issue. Please advise.

    Three things to try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • After installing a required update, many of my normal applications (Word, Chrome, Adobe Reader) will simply crash after opening. Why?

I recently installed a required printer (epson) update on my Macbook Pro (running Mt Lion).  After installing and going through the required restart, I discovered that many of my existing applications will not open; instead they simply crash moment after opening.  Prior to the update installation, everything worked fine.  I have gone through the disk utiities program and repaired the various disk permissions that needed changing and still nothing. My MacBook Pro is 4 years old, runs Mt Lion and has plenty of disc space available.  What do I need to do?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Newly installed adobe reader shuts down immediately after opening

I just installed Adobe Reader (on a Windows 7 computer) but when trying to open it it starts up and shuts down immediately. I have another PDF generator which came with the computer (Stat Nova PDF) which could be interferring with Adobe reader.
With Adobe reader installed neither PDF software works.
Is there a setting to make Adobe the default PDF reader?
I cannot risk uninstalling the original PDF software (Stat Nova PDF), as this is for an urgent job and cannot risk having no functional PDF reader at all.
    Thanks for your help

    Thanks heaps for that Pat,
    It seems to have worked.
Just out of curiosity. Why does one have to re-accept the licence agreement when we already accept it during the installation process?
Thank you again for your help

  • Adobe Reader 11 - error message when opening PDF's

I have an iMac OSx.  Using Adobe Reader 11.  Everytime I open a PDF I get "an internal error has occured"  I was trying to uninstall Adobe Reader 11 but the uninstaller in my Applications/Utilities is not there.  HELP!!

It's almost identical to what you posted. I think the difference was that I was trying on a machine with complete install of Acrobat which has the font packs and hence there was no hang/crash. Your file doesn't hang on that machine either.
If you look at the fonts panel in your document: File>Properties>Fonts, you'll notice that it uses MS-PGothic font which is a Japanese fonts, and hence the Japanese font pack might fix this.
Also, since you mentioned ACE.dll, the other possibility might be that there are conflicting DLLs on the system, commonly referred to as DLL Hell. Another thing to try would be to search the system for ACE.dll and see which all software install it.

  • Adobe Reader XI will not stay open.

I recently installed Adobe Reader XI. Whether I open the program directly or double-click a PDF document the results are the same. I briefly see the blank Reader application window, then it closes. I have run the Repair function from Control Panel with no positive results. Can someone tell me what the problem and solution is? Thank you.

Pat, I downloaded and ran the clean utility, then attempted to install all three Adobe Reader versions available on the link you provided, uninstalling and installing as needed. I experienced the same problem with all versions. I spoke to a colleague about what was happening, and he had me reinstall Adobe Reader XI and attempt to start it. After getting the same result, he asked me to look at the Event Viewer. We saw the entry below. I navigated to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\ folder and double-clicked the Eula.exe. It displayed the End User License Agreement window and I clicked 'Accept'. After doing that I was able to start the Reader without issue and it all seems to be working fine now. Pretty weird. Anyway, I thought I'd let you know in case it provided any useful information. It may be just a weirdism on my laptop. It certainly woudn't be the first. It's a Lenovo Thinkpad and I've renamed it a Stinkpad, for good reason. Thanks for your assistance and professional expertise, and let me know if there is anything else (logs, etc.) if you think it would be helpful or useful.

I'm not sure what this means. How is Reader or Acrobat printing from applications? Could you give us some more details as to what you are doing and how you are doing it? Also, do you have all those applications installed on the same machine or is it happening on multiple computers?

  • Adobe Reader freezes all browsers when opening a url to a PDF containing form fields...

There is an issue we are currently experienceing with Adobe Acrobat 9 (updated to the latest version) where ALL BROWSERS (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari) on each of two different systems (a MacBook Pro with Mac OSX Leopard and a Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows Vista) where the application will freeze up and crash the browser when we view a .pdf file from a url if the .pdf file iteself contains form fields.
At first I though it may have been specific to Mac OSX and this MacBook we were trying to view the document on, but the same issue is now occuring with a new Sony Vaio laptop (running Windows Vista) as well.
It seems like it is able to open .pdf documents containing form fields when they are stored locally, but when trying to access them via a url, the program will freeze up.  Sometimes it will eventually work if you had previously opened a .pdf prior to opening it via the url link and sometimes it doesn't.  And it seems to only be related to .pdfs containing fillable form fields (others open fine when accessing them by a url)
Obviously it's become quite irratating and I'm hopeing I can find some insight on this support forum as to what may be causing this issue.
Previous versions of Acrobat (installed on the MacBook) opened this very same .pdf file (url) fine before upgrading to version 9.
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
