Adobe Reader hangs with Annots.api

when running my application with Adobe Reader, which will sign on PDF document. Sometimes it will hang with error below:

The drivers are up to date.
I've just realised (doh!) that the printer isn't actually on the network, but has a direct USB connection to the w/station.
The problem is only with Adobe reader, just the first print of the day from Adobe. If the first print of the day is from Word that prints OK, but if the second is from Adobe it still hangs (becasue it's the first rpint from Reader). At first I thought Reader was trawling across the internet for some reason, maybe checking in with Adobe.
I'm baffled. I've tried uinstalling and reinstalling Reader as well!

  • Adober Reader 9.0: annots.api Crashes

I tried deploying Adobe Reader 9.0 to several campus computer labs I manage. I am using roaming user profiles, but I don't have AppData redirected - it stays on the local hard drive.
I discovered that while Reader 9 works OK for Administrators, it crashes at startup for people with just regular "User"-level privileges. This problem goes away if I remove the annots.api plugin file. Has anybody else seen this issue? I've gone back to Reader 8.1.2 in the meantime.
    Thanks for your help.

  • "Save as..." hang on long PDF with annots.api plugin enabled

    Hi,
I am not a regular Acrobat user but I have been attempting to use it recently to process some fairly long PDF files with up to 20K pages which weigh in at 50MB.  I thought I'd share something interesting I have discovered with the community.
What I found is that the larger the file (not sure whether it is the number of pages, number of bytes or something else) the longer it takes for the "Save as..." dialog box to appear.  Then, when the filename has been chosen (just saving as a normal PDF) the amount of time before the progress bar appears also seems to get longer for longer files.
In fact while the save as box is getting ready and while the progress bar is not yet showing, Adobe Acrobat seems to hang and stop responding.  We found that disabling plugins entirely (by shift clicking to open the document) eliminated entirely even for large documents.  We then narrowed it down to a specific plugin called annots.api.
My questions for the community are:
Is this a known issue with annots.api?
    What does annots.api actually do?
This seems to be the same for Adobe Reader X (Windows 2012), Adobe Acrobat X (Windows XP), Adobe Reader 11 (Windows 7), Adobe Acrobat XI (Windows 8) and Adobe Acrobat (Windows XI).
    Thanks,
    James
P.S. If somebody from Adobe want help to recreate the issue, I can provide some sample PDF files that clearly illustrate the issue and snow a possible polynomial performance curve.

i do not have a .mac account. i checked my preferences on that point and confirmed there is no effort to sync with iDisk.
i am only user (account) on this eMac. So i do not have a basis for compaing other users. i may set up a dummy account (other dummy?) to test this theory.
i checked my energy saver prefs. i had computer and display set to Never sleep. i had the box checked to put disk to sleep when possible. i have now unchecked that box.
i also have just downloaded update to 10.4.4. so, i will try that.
any other ideas, most appreciated. i am especially interested to know if there is software to look for possible virus infection that might cause this. since it happens randomly, i suspect it might be some bug (not sure if that is logical analysis on my part)

  • How to open Adobe Reader DC with Tools Closed

I do NOT like Adobe Reader opening with the right column expanded.
Also in all previous versions I could save my login for protected pdf files and when I open them back up they require a login again.  This is NOT how I want to work with Adobe Reader.
Adobe Reader XI was so much better.

Before the DC version we were able to save our passwords from University of Phoenix and when opening the document saved to our computer it would unlock automatically.  This new version DC will not allow this even when you say Yes.
The Right Column in previous versions would allow to disable until requested to appear this version it opens regardless.
Just my opinion here  Adobe Failed at customer satisfaction on this UPGRADE.

Once again, my thanks for your assistance. If I may impose on your generosity one more time, if I understand you correctly if I create a document on Word or WordPerfect, print it and scan it to create a pdf, the search function will not work. But, if I create the pdf document in Word the search function will work. Unfortunately, I am not sure how I create a pdf document in Word other than by printing it and scanning it. Could you please explain.

  • Adobe Reader Performance with Protect Mode On

We are getting very poor performance in opening PDF documents with Adobe Reader XI with Protected Mode on, particularly for users remote from our central server.  With Protected Mode off, performance is much better (10-20X faster opening).  Note that we are running Windows 7 with Application Data Roaming and Adobe Reader XI with Protected Mode on, Protected View off, and Advanced Security on.  We have diagnosed the problem as follows: We are using the Windows 7 Application Roaming Data feature to house some profile data for our remote users, and when they try to open a PDF document with Protected Mode on, Adobe sends numerous I/O packets (approximatel 6000!) across the "wire" for security checking against the Application Roaming data file on the central server, thus greatly slowing PDF opening.  We would like to know the following: 1) Is there a way to turn-off Protected Mode for company server stored documents, while keeping it active for documents received from external sources (e.g. from the internet, e-mail, etc.). 2) is there a way to have Protect Mode security verification done only on the local machine profile data and not on the centrally stored Application Roaming Data file (thus greatly reducing the "across the wire" I/O traffic).  Thanks for any help, CCB.

I don't think any of the scenarios you are envisaging are possible.  Protected Mode is enabled/disabled on a user basis (in HKEY_USERS).

  • Adobe reader met with unexpected error

    Hi all,
I've been bombed with this problem for so long, I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone can give any suggestion. The problem is: My adobe reader 7.0.8 or 8.0 are constantly met with unexpected errors. It just doesn't work, I can't open any files with it. Did anyone have similar problems before? Is there any hidden files I have to delete before installing a newer version or something else?
    thanks!!

    Here are more details:
I had adobe reader 6.0, the only version that was working on my mac, in my application library. I tried to upgrade it to version 8.0. I downloaded and installed adobe reader 8.0 alright, no problems there. But after installation was complete, the Reader restarted itself and crashed, showing me the message "The adobe reader met with unexpected error." and could not even function, not to mention opening any files. It happened with 7.0.8 before as well. I had no other way but to change it back to 6.0. But it's really bugging me because compared to the latest versions, 6.0 isn't really that good. So please help! thanks

  • Adobe Reader error with PDF reports created using AS Reports Server 10g

    Hi,
Recently when trying to run reports in our system (which uses Oracle Application Server Forms & Reports Services 10g - 10.1.2.0.2), sometimes when we try to run a report in PDF format the following happens:
    1. A new window appears as expected
    2. This window hangs/appears to try to load for a couple of minutes
    3. Eventually an Adobe Reader error message appears saying the following:
*"There is a problem With Adobe Acrobat/Reader. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and try again".*
I have noticed that this problem only seems to occur when the client has Adobe Reader 9.3 installed (8.2 works fine).
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there a known workaround or is this a known issue?
    Many thanks,
    Chris

Does anyone have any ideas on this or has anyone encountered the same problem?
    thanks

  • Adobe reader hangs forever on save

    I downloaded following form:
    http://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/portal/downloads/itr/ITR2_Version1.0.pdf
After filling it or say even after filling one entry if I try to save the form (ctrl-s), Adobe Reader seems to hang forever.
Initially it shows lots of harddisk activity for 4-5 mins and after that harddisk activity stops but it keeps on using CPU to almost 100%. And then (after waiting for 10mins) I killed it.
The file was not modified at all even after 10mins.
I use Adobe Reader 7.0.8 (tar.gz) for Linux on FC6. Can someone confirm if same happens with 7.0.9 as I am not allowed to download/install it.
Do I have to apply any patch? Any idea when Adobe Reader 8.1 for Linux be launched?
    Thanks in advance.
    Amish.

Ctrl-S saves directly on same file which was opened hence obviously it wont show 'Save As' dialogue box. But it doesnt suspend for sure as otherwise it wont show lots of harddisk activity.
I even tried File-Exit or Ctrl-Q. I even tried File-Close (Ctrl-W). In both cases it asked me to Save file or not. I clicked Yes and again after lots of harddisk activity nothing happened. Harddisk activity stopped after sometime but CPU was still used continuously. Reader simply hanged with gray window.
Just now I tried same form on one FC2 machine and there too same problem occured. Waited for about 10mins.
Were you able to save with same form?
    Thanks for your quick response.
    Amish.

  • Adobe Reader hangs

I'd be interested to know why your software couldn't go to Reader DC, since it's just the reader and not doing any writing. Reader XI was bloated in my opinion and they fixed a lot of issues with DC. Since you uninstalled and reinstalled, I'm assuming you used the latest XI installer and made sure it was fully patched? Just want to make sure you're not using an old installer.

We are using Adobe reader XI (can't go to DC yet we have software that doesn't support using DC).We currently have a wide spread problem that I was recently made aware of. Reader will hang the whole PC for 20-30 seconds the first time in a boot cycle thata user clicks in a textbox within a PDF. It doesn't happen at launch, you could read the whole document with no hangs, but as soon as you click in a textbox, the whole system hangs. This seems like a plugin problem, but for the life of me I can't seem to figure this out. It happens on all different processor types, RAM capacities, and architecture, though all Win7. I can't narrow it down. Acrobat seems only mildly affected (maybe 3 seconds hang but usually just a quick hiccup)I have nuked Reader from multiple workstations and reinstalled, but to no avail. Once that initial hang is...
