Adobe Reader in Firefox

I have several links that are attached to PDF's. These links
work fine in IE, but in Firefox I get an error message saying
"cannot use Adobe Reader to view PDF in your web browser. Reader
will now exit." Can anyone tell me if I have my links set wrong, or
does Adobe Reader just not work with Firefox?

There is also an Adobe forum to ask Reader questions

And a place to update Reader

  • Using Adobe Reader under Firefox: I have read the Mozilla specific help for this and fail.

I have Firefox 3.6 and FC13. I need to run Adobe reader under Firefox to be able to submit tax forms. I run Adobe reader 9 fine separately, including forms.
In the reset download actions Mozilla suggestion I fail at: 2. click File and select Exit, then 3. delete the mimetypes.rdf file. I can delete the file with a different sequence but it does not help.
I would install Adobe reader separately as an Add-on, but cannot find it. I only find PDFescape.
My adobe preferences specify use of the Firefox browser and I start under Firefox Open File but submit fails because I am no longer under Firefox.

What is your operating system?  Reader version?

  • Where are Adobe Reader and Firefox ??

Maybe I lack understanding in Mac environment, but I downloaded (and tought I had installed) Adobe Reader and Firefox, but can<t find anything else than rhw .dmg files (instead of the normal icons for the installed programs) on the desktop.
How ca I get a program that will 1) install permanbtly, 20 will leave me with a nice icon and simple name on desktop (instead of <<Firefox 2.0.0.2.fmg>>, and 3) will appear in my applications list as a permanent program instead of something that seems to istall from scratch every time I double-click on iyt ??...

    welcome to the apple discussions!
when you download an application, it usually gives you a .dmg or disk image. double click on the disk image and it will mount it. click on the mounted image and in it is the downloaded application or installer. when it is finished installing the application will be in the application folder. Sometimes the disk image will have the app itself and you can drag that to the applications folder. (double-click macintosh HD on the desktop, and on the sidebar will be the application folder.)
    hope that helps!

P.S - make sure you download the Mac versions of firefox and Adobe Reader.

  • Opening unknown mimetype with Adobe Reader in firefox?

Firefox 4.0 appears to be able to identify an unknown mimetype with a pdf file. In Options>Applications>Content Type, it lists "PDF (application/unknown)" as a content type but I cannot alter it so that this file type will open with "Use Adobe Reader (in Firefox)." Is there anyway to fix this so that Reader will open these files in firefox?

I see. Can you provide an URL where it does not open through the plugin as expected? HTTP (web) servers are responsible for asserting the MIME type of the content in reponse to the user-agent (browser). If the server does not define the MIME type as being "application/pdf" before proceeding to serve the content then the plug-in will not kick in. That's one possible tangent.
The other is that something is wrong in Firefox. In that case, try [http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions#Resetting_download_actions resetting the download actions].

  • Why can I not open PDF files using adobe reader in firefox?

When I try to read a PDF file with adobe reader the file looks like it starts to load, I see in the tool bar the page count but the file never opens.

You can change the action for Portable Document Format (PDF) from Preview in Firefox to use another application like the Adobe Reader or set to Always Ask in "Firefox > Options/Preferences > Applications".
You can set the pdfjs.disabled pref to true on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable the build-in PDF viewer.
You can check the value of the plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types pref on the about:config page and remove the application/pdf part if present or reset the pref to the default via the right-click context menu.
    See also:
Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs on each start of Firefox.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there.
You may want to check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so involved preferences can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

  • Adobe Reader X - Firefox integration Problem

    Dear All,
    My first post here.
I am having problem's with the Adobe Reader X integration with Firefox (v3.6.12). I have been using Adobe Reader always and it's been fine.
But I installed the new Adobe Reader X, and it integrates with firefox well, PDF document's open well within the browser.. BUT, I cannot save the PDF document from within the pdf.. I cannot click anywhere on the toolbar.. I cannot click on the pop up toolbar as well (the black one).. When i press F8, I can restore the toolbar or make it disappear.. but that's all I can do..
If I try to save the document from firefox file menu, it works.. but not from within the pdf...
This problem is also seen in IE, as well.
I have tried repairing the install and also uninstall / reinstall adobe reader X. But nothing worked..
For more info., I have been discussing this issue here > http://forum.notebookreview.com/windows-os-software/534412-adobe-reader-x-available-3.html
I am looking forward to resolving this soon, because I use / read / work with hundreds and thousands of PDF, and they are extremely essential for my research work.. as some might know, all research articles are in PDF format these days..
Thanks in advance and best wishes,
    Cheers, fondue

    My replies are in Bold.
Thank you for your response and message.
    1. Are you seeing this problem with all kinds of PDF's or some specific  kinds like secure PDF's (with doc open password or printing  restrcitions), reader extended PDF's or PDF forms.
This problem is with all kind's of PDF's.
    2. Are you opening a locally saved PDF by doing a drag drop in the  browser or right click and open with IE/FF or directly opening a PDF  hosted on the internet?
It doesn't matter. However I do it, I see this problem in Firefox, IE & Google Chrome.
    3.  Can you also check the version of the Reader X browser plugin? you  could find it at C:\Program Files\Common  Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroPDF.dll. Right click -> Properties  -> Details
If version is 9.0.x then you could try a clean install of Reader X.
I have checked it. It's the latest plug-in (though at the moment, I have gone back to Adobe Reader 9.4.1, as I've mentioned before, because I need the reader to be working fine for my work and daily life. I am just waiting for a fix before I try Adobe Reader X again.
As I've mentioned before, I am seeing this issue ONLY on my Windows 7 Ultimate (Laptop). In the desktop's at work, with Windows XP / Vista, I don't see it. Adobe Reader is working fine, browser integration is fine, the floating tool bar works fine, the right click menu pop' up where the right click is done...I can also save PDF' from the main toolbar at the top and so on...
I really have run out of ideas.... and I am very surprised that no expert support personnel (if at all there is one) have dropped by or said anything or mentioned anything about this.
    Anyway.... Cheers.

The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility is indeed no longer available from Microsoft, but it can still be obtained from various 3rd-party download sites such as http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html
Download it, install it, then run it (Start | Programs | Windows Install Clean Up), select 'Adobe Reader' and click on the Remove button.

  • Adobe Pro 11 conflict with Adobe reader on Firefox

I downloaded adobe acrobat pro 11 trial version and also have adobe reader on my Windows 7.  I get error only on firefox when trying to open the pdf attachment stating "there was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired".
The pdf attachment works fine with Chrome, or when attaching to an outlook email.
Is there a fix, or should I just uninstall the adobe acrobat pro trial??

Are you using the Adobe Reader plugin, or Firefox' own PDF viewer?

  • Bad Image Colors in a PDF Using Adobe Reader for Firefox

I'm using the Adobe Reader 9.41 plugin for Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 in Ubuntu Linux (Lucid 2.6.32-27).  Photo colors in one particular PDF file created today on a Mac using Adobe Acrobat are greenish.  The same PDF viewed in Acrobat Reader 9.41 for Linux are also bad.  But when I view the same PDF in other PDF viewers for Linux, including the Google Chrome browser, the colors are correct.  Suggestions anyone?

AFAIK, no. Acrobat/Reader will only generate plain-text emails.

  • How do I open .dll files automatically with Adobe Reader through Firefox?

    Hi,
When I print eBay labels through Firefox, a .dll file is downloaded. This used to open automatically in Adobe Reader, but now it opens as a text document in TextEdit, so I have to manually open Adobe Reader, change options to show "all files", and then locate the .dll file and open it.
When I try to change the default application in Firefox preferences, I can't find anything with the content type "dll".
Is there a way to have Firefox automatically open .dll files with Adobe Reader?
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!
    Steve

    That worked, thank you!
I quit out of Firefox, renamed the file like you said, restarted my computer, and restarted Firefox.
When I went to download a label, Firefox asked me which application to use, and I picked Adobe Reader. I also checked the box to make that the default. This automatically opened the file in AR, and then when I did it the next time it worked perfectly.
Again, thank you so much for your help with this - although it's just a bit of time here and there saved it really adds up!
    Take care!

  • Filling in forms with adobe reader in firefox on ubuntu64

    Hi
I am trying to fill in pdf forms with adobe reader 8.12 in firefox 3.03 and ubuntu64 8.04.
The forms display in firefox and I can check boxes, but when I try to select a text box I am unable to type. I can enter text by right clicking on the box and pasting. I also cannot use tab to move between boxes.
If I save a pdf to disk and open it with adobe reader then I can enter text and cycle through boxes with tab.
Sometimes I am unable to load pdfs in firefox that I have viewed before. When I click on the link a blank page is displayed. I can open them if I set firefox to open them externally with acroread rather than in the browser window.
    Thanks for any help.
    Paul

It's completely up to the IRS to create a form where the information fits in the field. There is nothing you can do with Reader since it is simply what it is called, a reader.
For you to change the document properties would require using the full version of Acrobat.

  • .jsp files opened in Adobe Reader by Firefox will not print on my HP laserjet

I have a vendor site that provides me info in .jsp format, which Firefox on my Mac opens in Adobe Reader. When I send this file to my HP 3015 laserjet it starts spooling the file then locks up. I tried creating a .pdf file in Acrobat Pro, but still encountered the same problem. My Firefox, Adobe Reader, Acrobat Pro, and MacOSX (snow leopard) are current. I do NOT encounter the problem with .aspx files. Appreciate any help here! Thanks

  • Want: Adobe Reader with Firefox but not with Safari

I've been using Firefox as my primary browser for awhile, but still use Safari at times. I use Adobe Reader to display PDFs within Firefox, and it is currently also used by Safari.
I'd like to take advantage of Safari's new ability to natively display PDFs within the browser window without using Adobe Reader, but I want to continue to use Reader with Firefox.
Does anybody know of a way to make this happen? It seems to be an all-or-nothing proposition since the same plug-in is used by both browsers.
    iBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   It's white.

well, you might try quitting safari & firefox, then moving the adobe plugin(s) from /hd/library/internet plug-ins/ to /applications/firefox.app/contents/plug-ins/ In finder, press Apple-shift-G & paste the italicised text above into the box - this will take you to the firefox plug-ins folder ( assuming you have firefox in the applications folder )
then restart the browsers & see what happens
Please note - I don't know that this will work, but it's easy to try & easy to revert back to normal - just quit the browsers again & move the plugin(s) back where they came from.
I'll just test it with a different plug-in......
