Adobe Reader Read Mode Floating Toolbar Missing Page Numbers

How do I get the page numbers to show up in the Read Mode toolbar.
Mine are missing.
I Googled it for a while and wasn't able to find anything.

Could it be related to a group policy setting?

  • Indexing - Out of Sequence and Missing Page Numbers

I have a 296 page book. This is an on-going project and has been updated many times.
Two new sections have been added to this book. I have marked words for indexing.
My problem is that many of the page numbers are repeated or out-of-sequence.
    For example: Intake Manifolds 66, 67, 68, 69, 68, 87, 68, 69, 186, 189, 203
This is one item that is not in the new sections, so this should not have changed.
I also have noticed missing page numbers. I verified a 'Helmets & Accessories' marker on page 248 of the new section, but it doesn't show up in the index at all.
Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? I have searched the net for others having the same issues, but I haven't found many.
    IDCS4 on Mac Pro.
    Thanks.
    Randy

We are having the same problem! I'm using ID CS4 6.0.1 on a 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 running OS X 10.5.6. For example, see below. The * represents a missing page number.
    Axle, Rear
    Alignment 163
    Fastener Torque 15
Magnetic Drain Plugs 28, 51, 27, 45 [note how out of sequence these are!!]
    Preventive Maintenance *, 145
CS3 was finally fixed by an Adobe patch, and as far as indexing big books went, became as solid as a rock. But now they have broken it again!! It is killing us, because we've switched 20 computers to CS4 only and updated all of our files, so we can't go back!
The only thing that seems to work is to find problem files and open the Index palette and click the Update Preview button. THEN you run your index, and sometimes it's fixed. A couple of "bad" files can spoil the whole barrel, but it's impossible to figure out which ones are bad, or even why they're bad. And when you finally fix one problem, by using the Update Preview button or by blowing away index markers and re-doing them, and getting rid of unused topics, the SAME PROBLEM will appear in other places related to other files in your book, that were "good" before!!!

  • Printing in Pages - Missing page numbers

I've been having a problem printing from my MacBook using Pages 08 to my HP PSC 2210 physically connected to a networked PC (using the Gutenprint 5.1.3 HP PSC 2210 driver -- Which works fine normally...)
In printing a single half page of text, the page numbers show up fine.. However once I get past the end of page 1, I lose whatever is in the footer (Page # in this case) -- Even if page 8 only has a half page of text, it wont print any page #...
It almost seems that I am printing a 8x12 page on an 8x11 piece of paper... (But all the non-footer text is there, so that doesnt seem to be the case...)
I tried installing the Mac driver for the printer, but the same thing happened..
    Any suggestions?

Jerry, it wasnt the "First Page is Different" thing, but in going to the layout inspector (which I didnt know about -- I'm normally a MS Word guy), I found the footer margin for the 8 page document was .31, and the Bottom Document margin was ..25 -- I changed it to Bottom=.75 and footer=.25 and it works fine...
Thanks for setting me down the right track!

  • Missing page numbers in cross references?

In existing ID documents, I insert a cross-reference, and there is no page number given, even when page number is defined in the cross references tab. I can open a brand new document, and make a cross reference to one of the existing docs, and that will work- but making a reference in the existing doc to the new one will not work.
So, why are my page numbers not showing up for my cross references?

    Which OS? Which version?
I had this problem once in a CS document. This was a bug and could only repaired by creating a complete new document. IDML export did not help.
Does the TOC version work here? In my case this did not work either.

  • Missing page numbers while generating PDF from Framemaker book

FrameMaker 9 book files have the correct master page applied and page numbers appear right. However, when generating PDF, the page numbers including the footer is missing.
I created another book file, yet same issue occurs.
Also, tried generating separate PDF for each chapter, same issue occurs.
I have installed Univers font from ATM, I'm using WIndows XP. The Footer tags are in Univers font. Could that be the reason?
    Please advise.

We have seen a similar problem when the page# was at the right edge of the header or footer frame, and the tab that put it there was too far to the right.
This is an old problem. It comes from setting tab stop positions in paragraph formats with the cursor in the text frame on the TOC reference page. Nothing wrong with this, EXCEPT when the master page text frame has been made narrower than the reference page's text frame. One way to avoid the problem or to fix it, is to set tab stops in a paragraph in the body page text frame, so the width is correct. Another way is to set the tab stops accurately by number, rather than by eye. Visually, the reference page tab stop will look correct, but the generated TOC uses the master page text frame - if it's narrower than the reference frame, this problem occurs.
I seem to remember that this might have been fixed in more recent FM releases, but I think that's a false recovered memory, because this is not a bug, just a discrepancy in measurement. There's no way to expect that the prototype paragraph format on the TOC reference page can know if a tab stop will be out-of-bounds on the generated TOC page.

  • Missing page numbers

I am using dvips to generate ps files. In ghostview, there are page numbers visible. Once printed, however, all the page numbers are gone.
    What could be wrong?
    TIA.

How close to the bottom edge of the paper are the numbers?
Are you normally able to print that close to the edge?
Are you using A4 or letter paper?

  • Consecutive Page Numbering

This question may well have alread been addressed. If so just direct me to the rignt thread.
I have tried the Adobe on-line instructions and help re: page numbering. And I did a search on this forum, but did not find an answer.
I have a three volume work. Each book has several chapters. I want to link the page numbers between chapters within a single volume.
And I would like to link the page numbers between volumes. Thus, having a consecutive numbering from the first page of the first book to the last page of the last book. The reason is for indexing. In the index one only need to refer the reader to the page number, not volume and page number.
    Thank you,
    Lucca

InDesign can't create hierarchical books (books-within-books.) You'll need four books - one for each volume, and another for the comprehensive collection of component files whose index markers you want to collect into a single index.

  • Page numbers display as 5 of 1 and 2 of 2121 in a PDF that was created from a Word 2003 document

We merge several Word 2003 documents into 1 larger document that we then convert to PDF.  The page numbers in the Word document display properly - 1 of 21, 2 of 21, 3 of 21, etc.  We then convert that merged document to PDF by right-clicking the filename and choosing "Convert to Adobe PDF".  For those of us with Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.1.3, the page numbers in the converted PDF file display as 1 of 1, 2 of 1, ... 21 of 1.  Those with Acrobat Professional 8.1.3, they display as 1 of 21, 2 of 2121, 3 of 212121, etc., each page adding another total number of pages to the total.  There is no change in the result if using v8.0.0 or 8.1.4  Does anyone have any ideas???

Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade to OFFICE 2007, I would not recommend it. I hate it -- have it on two computers. I have had problems creating PDFs reliably from WORD 2007 and PPT 2007, at least with graphics. The conversion seems to want to split graphics up into several parts rather than leave it as one. It does not happen with WORD 2003 and so assume this is some sort of issue with OFFICE 2007. You can get the graphics fine if you use the MS plugin for PDF creation, but then you have to deal with the MS version of a PDF. If you want to try it on one computer in your office, I would do that before you make the change. However, if what you have meets the need, then why change unless there are specific items that you are looking for and don't have.
OK, that is my opinion. I am sure there are counter arguments. If I had the preference on my newer machines, I would have OFFICE 2003. Bill

  • Adobe Reader X - basic toolbar (ie page location, magnification, etc)

    Hi all,
I just switched over to Adobe X due to the "search function" issue going on with the lastest Adobe Reader version.
Can someone tell me how to display the traditional "toolbar" in Adobe X?  I'm talking about the toolbar for searching for a word, or jumping to a page number, or increasing or decreasing the magification %.  I use those functions all the time...and can't find a way to get it now.
I run Window 7 on my pc.
Thanks so much for the help!!!
    Jason

I don't believe you answered the question. I have the same problem in that when I upgraded to Reader X my Toolbar disappeared and you responded to my post with a fix. Last week I installed updates to both Acrobat 8 and Reader X and in the process lost my toolbar and the floating toolbar. After "repairing" both Reader and Acrobat numerous times I find that at least the floating toolbar is back and F8 will of course deliver the traditional fixed, top of the page toolbar, but only for that specific open document. When I open a new document (from the web) I must F8 to get my traditional toolbar back. Below are the settings I am using to achieve this (I have tried every combination to try and make this work). Any help to get my toolbar back is very much appreciated.

  • Missing pages when printing in Adobe Reader 9?

I'm trying to print a chapter in a PDF document using the Bookmarks Navigational Panel but whenever I print the chapter (i.e. right-click on the chapter and select Print Pages), some pages are skipped and not printed.
I have tried to re-install Adobe Reader 9, print different chapters in the PDF document, print chapters in other PDF documents, and use different machines-- but I always get the same problem.  It seems that the only workaround is to use the File menu and print specific page numbers.
Is there a setting or a patch that I can apply to resolve this problem?  I would really like to print chapters from the bookmarks navigational panel and not have to look up the page numbers!

    Thanks ! - and you are most "welcome" "lera1981" ! .........
With respect to the printing problem with Reader 9.x and your report of your experiments with Reader 9.x and with network-printing then I tend to agree  with your assessment that it would seem as the problem is probably with Reader 9.x's printing capeability .
Just for the record I would like to report that my experience with network-connected office-class HP printer has been that some printing problems I've seen in the past with Adobe Reader X.xx has been rectified though the change of driver-type and/or driver-generation such as a switch from e.g. a "PCL 6" driver to a "PCL 5" driver .   Last time I experienced a printing problem with a network-connected office-class HP printer I then had to change the driver to their "HP Universal Print Driver".
While I would say that you are probably right that a change of printer-driver would not make a difference in your case then the point of my writing is that Adobe Reader X.xx or (it's interaction with) Windows seems to be "printer-driver tech-sensitive" understood as that Reader printing tends to respond differently to different "driver tech" !
    Kind Regards

  • Reader X - Floating Toolbar in Browser not functional

Using Reader X in "recent" Firefox version and IE 9 with Windows 7. When viewing a PDF in either browser, none of the icons in the floating toolbar respond. The cursor arrow changes shape during the rollover of the icons, but clicking on them (print, save, page up/down, etc) yields no response whatsoever. Any ideas? Behavior is with 2 of 2 browsers and all websites tested. Isolated to a single user. Thanks!

I read the very long thread at http://forums.adobe.com/message/3295855#3295855 discussing the exact problem with Reader X and an older version of Firefox.  Although several comments mentioned changing the zoom level to 100% from something greater, I initially thought they were referring to the zoom within the Reader window.  When I finally realized that they were referring to the display properties, I changed that back to 100% and the controls now work.
Although this problem has been happening to me on a custom-built rig, my display is a Dell U2412M.  I think at least one other commenter in the other thread mentioned Dell, so perhaps the problem is with the Dell display driver -- where increasing the magnification causes Adobe to "see" mouse presence someplace other than where it actually is.  Strage -- and this behavior doesn't appear to affect other apps..
The solution in comment 116 by solution_finder_123 works!!!.  Right-click on the shortcut to Reader in the Win 7 Start Menu and select "Disable display scaling on high DPS settings" on Compatibility tab.

  • Suspicious behaviour: Does installing Adobe Reader also installs Google Toolbar and Chrome?

Adobe staff, please confirm this behaviour...
Yesterday I downloaded Adobe Reader from http://get.adobe.com/reader/ for my freshly installed Windows 7
    computer.
While installing Adobe Reader, the app also automagically installed Google Toolbar on my IE and Chrome on my computer.
While I have nothing against having a Google Toolbar or Chrome, the sneaky way they are installed bothers me...
That's the kind of thing that malware and spyware would do... not Adobe!
So can someone from Adobe please confirm that this is the behaviour of Adobe Reader? I'm beginning to get a bit concerned.
By the way, I did not see any opt-out box?
If there was one, then it's so well-hidden that I missed it!
    Thanks.

"If you cared to Google, there has been numerous instances where users have complained that
    bundled software were installed either:
    1) Without their permission
    2) The opt-out tickbox is unobvious to the user because of the form's vague design"
    Without their permission??? Unobvious???
    Are you serious?
    Are you HIGH?
    Are you that naive?
See the screen shot. There is a box to uncheck if you DON'T want the Google software. I've been in these forums (Reader, Acrobat, Flash Player, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks) since 2004 and have been fixing other people's computers since 2002. One of the STUPIDEST THINGS I've ever heard in all that time is "I don't have time to uncheck a box"...
from people who then have the time to:
investigate what installed that they DIDN'T uncheck thebox for...
research exactly where it came from...
    then they come here...
set up an Adobe ID and log into the forum...
search for the right forum to post in...
and then proceed to spew out a lengthy verbose and intricate account of how they "got hijacked" by software they didn't have less than half a second to prevent installing by... wait for it... unchecking a little box WITH A SINGLE MOUSE CLICK.
I understand you're ticked off because you made a dumb mistake and I'm really sorry you feel that you were "taken advantage of" and had software installed without your permission after you FAILED to choose NOT to install it. But if you plan to continue using computers let me give you a piece of advice...
If you haven't read it... and I mean REALLY read it... DON'T click it.

When I try to open Adobe Reader, it just opens a gray page and then closes by itself. This also applies to any pdf files I try to access; they'd all follow the same pattern: Gray page-->automatically closes after 2 to 3 seconds time. I have tried accessing the Eula.exe via C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, however, the only available button for me to click is the "Decline" button and not the "Accept" license agreement. Please help!
