Adobe Reader Splash--I have a PDF file that whenever I try to open it suggests using Adobe Reader with a link to download Adobe Reader. I can't get beyond this. I have made Preview the default for all PDF's and yet this persists. I have also deleted Adobe Reader. This particular file is a portfolio, btw.

File Quits whenever I try to open it

I think I have a corrupted Apple Works file. It's a word proc. document and no other program will open it. I was spell checking a word then got the message "Cannot find user dictionary" then it gave me an unexpectedly quit message. This was on Mac OS 9.2. Now whenever I try to open it it gives me that same error. I have an older version of it backed up on a CD but is the file shot or does Apple Works have a feature that fixes corrupted files?

Try opening the file with Text Edit. If successful, you'll get a load of 'garbage' (actually formating data) followed by the file's text contents followed by more 'garbage'.
If there's no success, visit Panergy Software and download ICWord, a low cost shareware application for converting files between AW and MS Word formats. Panergy offers a free thirty day trial. If you'll use the software after the 30 days, the price is US$19.95.
ICWord is reported to be more tolerant of file errors than AppleWorks.

I have newer pdf files that show the 1st page of the document as the icon instead of just the logo.

Compress it as a zip file and add the zip file to the mail as an enclosure.
In the Finder control (right) click on the pdf file to bring up the Finder's contextual menu and select Compress. A .zip file will be created in the same directory as the pdf file. Then add that zip to your mail message. The receiver will of course have to expand the zip on his or here end. But zip is fairly general and woks on both macs and windows.

Unable to open pdf files, not even in browse. When I try, it opens loads of new tabs - over 100 a time until I press the exit button on the top corner. The page flashes non-stop when it opens the new tabs. If I didn't stop it, it would open 100's more.

Hello. I have some .mov files that I am able to open with Quick time on my pc but not on my mac. I even tried downloading quick time 7 but still no progress. Is there anything else I can do?

Mavericks changed how media was handled on OS X. Apple moved away from the old Quicktime frameworks (that were started in the 80's IIRC). Now the OS uses AVFramework. It is why Quicktime X (QTX) & Quicktime 7 (QT7) can play different formats.
QT7 used a series of codec plugins (encoder/ decoder) to add support for formats that Apple never supported (like DIVX, WMV, Ogg audio etc). Many users installed plugins like Perian to add these codecs via a simple installer. Perian may still work on QT7 apps, I haven't tested Perian on 10.10. Perian is clearly out of date & abandoned now, see perian.org or see the site of the old codec.
AVFoundation & QTX has no ability to add extra codecs - you get support because the format is correct for AVFoundation to play, you get a dialog that converts the movie or the third option is that AVFoundation can't convert & simply chokes & doesn't allow playback.
Apple have nothing to fix. The reason the movies don't play is because the new framework uses 64bit for everything. The older codecs are not 64bit & since Apple didn't write those codecs they won't fix them either. It may seem like I'm apologising for Apple, but it isn't entirely their fault, things move on.
I'm afraid you need to work out what codecs you have contained in the files (.mov is just a wrapper around the data - the codec is the key to reading the data). mediainfo can help with that

It will list the details of the codecs - from there you need to find an app that will convert to a supported format.
It sounds like you have a sound format that is not compatible with AVFoundation - that means all apps the rely on AVfoundataion no longer play those files (Finder & iMovie use AVFoundataion).

Pages works with all other docs, except the one I need to work on. From my downloads folder I can preview the entire file, however whenever I try to open it, i get the "opening" pane filled to ~90% and then the SBBOD. Only file it does this on...help??

From my downloads folder it recognizes the file as a Pages document, I can preview the entire document, but I try to open the file in multiple ways (from right click, to open from preview, from inside pages) and it refuses to open. The "opening" prompt comes up, fills ~90% and then I eventually get the SBBOD. It will fail out if given long enough to think it through or i need to force quit.

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer. As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you. I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.

For the record I fixed this problem by going into Reader and running the repair program. This brought up the .pdf extension in addition to the .pdfxml extension which was all I had before

I have 5 computers running top end processors and RAM. By this I mean I have one, this one which I am using that has an AMD Phenom Black 3.2 Quad-core with 8 GBs of Corsair top DDR2 RAM, my other two AMD have either an Athlon II triple core with 4 GBs of DDR2 Corsair RAM, one with the Phenom X4 965 3.4 GHz Quad-core with 8 GBs of their best DDR2 RAM, and two Intels with the i7 920 Processors using the triple channel 1366 socket processors and one with 8 GBs of low latency DDR3 RAM and the other with 4 GBs of the same RAM. I am getting the message on this one, which has a fresh install of XP Pro X64 operating system, as do the other 4 as well. I have run Avast Business Pro Anti-virus on this one, which I am getting the message on with a single result which I deleted, and also both Spybot Search and Destroy, which came back clean as well as Malwarebytes Antimalware, which got a lot of tracing cookies now removed, and SuperAntiSpware which also found a few cookies also now deleted. Can you tell me what I need to do to get these files to show as .pdf files rather than as a clean blank page. One other issue is that I wish to know how to turn off my downloads so they are saved and Mozilla will give me the option of returning them instead of me losing them all together as it does now. Nothing has been converted. You first need to convince yourself of this.
Start Adobe Reader (or Adobe Acrobat, if you have it). Use Open from the File menu. Pick one of your PDF files. Does it open OK? If not, what happens?
