Adobe reader vs preview on OSX

I have created a pdf form by using livecycle designer and gving it extended features in acrobat x pro.
On windows i can open the form, fill it out and print it by using adobe reader. I can even save the form with all the text and images inserted; and go back and edit them afterwards until i wanna complete it by printing.
On OSX 10.6 however i encounter these problems:
- Open in Adobe reader i fill out the form and i can save it to not lose my work in case of crash but when i want to finalize the form and choose print; adobe reader has blocked that i can print it to a pdf. It says i have to archive it. which will only result in another editable copy of the form.
- Then i tried using preview but here i can only add text and when i try to add pictures (which is an image field you press and it asks for the picture) nothing happens.
So basically im stuck when it comes to osx unless you have acrobat pro or the big adobe suites installed, i f i wanna use adobe all the way.
If i wanna use preview it doesnt want to insert pictures which is a crucial part of the pdf form.

On OS X you should be able to save it as a postscript file by printing and clicking on the PDF button. Take the postscript file and open it in Preview, it will be converted to a pdf file.

  • Adobe Reader 9 and Mac OSX 10.5 - FDF Issue

I have an issue that only happens when using Adobe Reader 9 and Mac OSX 10.5.
When submitting a form from within a PDF, the FDF that gets sent is completely blank.
Tested on Mac OSX 10.4 with Adobe Reader 9 - no issue
Tested on Mac OSX 10.5 with Adobe Reader 8 - no issue
Tested on Mac OSC 10.5 with Adobe Professional 8 - no issue
It only seems to be a combination of OSX 10.5 and Reader 9. Does anyone have any clue about the settings of these two and what might be happening?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Mac OS 10.4.11: I could not open pdf docs today (12-24-08), uninstalled & installed Adobe Reader 9.0.0. pdf docs icons changed but open, however cannot open Reader from Applications and get: Adobe Reader
    Version 9.0.0
    Installing/fixing installation
Then immediately get this error message:
Adobe Reader could not install correctly.
Adobe Reader was unable to install a necessary component
    and must quit.
Any help out there for me?
    Thanks, Tony

  • Adobe reader file preview type library reference

Where I will may see adobe reader file preview type library reference?

I would guess that this interface is registered and used by Windows to generate previews for Explorer. It is not supported or documented, but if it does that, it won't have anything to do with text extraction.
Adobe Reader has a supported interface for displaying in a window.
For a text extraction API you'd want Acrobat, which would allow you via VBA to run JavaScript to get text quads.
Note that this is not for server use. If you want server text extraction consider Adobe's PDF iFilter. This is unusual in that it is supported but is not in the SDK; Microsoft define the interfaces to iFilters, not Adobe.
If you have further questions about Acrobat or Reader development, I'd recommend that you post in the Acrobat SDK forum, to reach the right experts.

  • Adobe Reader Hijacks Preview as Safari's Default PDF Viewer

Installing the latest Adobe Reader causes Preview to be overwritten by Reader as the default PDF reader in Safari. There's a setting in Adobe Reader prefs that should aloow one to change the setting, but it is greyed out. Thanks Adobe! You'll need to go to your HD/Library/Internet Plug-in folder and remove the Adobe plug-ins. Quit and restart Safari, then Preview is default again.

Thanks very much for your post Bruce.
I was sick of adobe reader always bugging me with updates when i didn't use it so i killed it with appzapper thinking that would be that.  However the two plug-ins in the library/internet plug-ins folder were still there and instead of defaulting back to preview i just got a message to reinstal adobe.
After finding your post, I deleted the adobe plug-ins and preview is back and hopefully all remnants of adobe reader are gone.
    Much appreciated

  • I installed Adobe Reader to my Mac OSX 10.8... website I need it for says no.

I installed Adobe Reader to my Mac osx 10.8. It installed, I clicked "FINISHED".  When I go back to the education website that I needed it for it tells me I need to agree to the Adobe licsencing agreement and reopen the browser. How do I agree to the licsensing agreement?? It never came up for me to do that. I tried to re-install but it just tells me I already have it installed.
    Thanks
    Dawn

You need to open Adobe Reader by itself (not in the browser), then accept the EULA.

  • Compatibility of Adobe Reader XI with mac OSX 10.8.5  and other browsers

I would like to download and use Adobe Reader XI so that i could insert signatures into pdf documents. However, I noted that  the requirements of Adobe Reader XI for mac computers with OSX 10.8.5, specifies Safari as the browser. Can I use Firefox or Google Chrome rather than Safari?

Both Firefox and Chrome use their own PDF viewers; you would need to configure them to use the Adobe PDF plugin: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

  • Default pdf files to Adobe Reader not Preview

Pdf files always open in Preview. How can I tell my system to open them in Adobe Reader?

I am sorry but have same problem and do not understand what appears to be your very simple instructions. I just installed Adobe Acrobat 9 and when directed my Mac to set Adobe as the default; however, when opening a .pdf document off my university website the only choice I am given is to open the doc in Preview, which results in very inconsistent downloads--sometimes just one page, sometimes just a partial article. In what application do I access "Get Info" and "Open With" etc.?
    Thanks.

  • Adobe Reader vs Preview

I downloaded Adobe Reader and now my Preview does not work, especially for converting files to PDF in the print function.  But if I delete Adobe Reader I cannot read some pdf files from the internet.  What do I do to have both operational?

    Hi mlkromer,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on what exactly you mean by Preview not working. If you mean that PDFs no longer open in Preview by default, then you may find the following article on changing the default application for a file type helpful (it's an older article, but the same process still applies):

  • Adobe Reader Print Preview

    Hello,
Our buisness program has a built in Fax program that uses Windows Fax and Scan, when I send our priclist to  243 companies each week a print preview from Adobe Reader pops up each time. How can this preview be turned OFF?

That depends upon the fax software, not Reader.

  • Adobe Reader Overrides Preview in Safari

For the last several versions the installer for Adobe Reader no longer asks whether the Adobe PDF Viewer should be installed for Web browsers.  If you've installed a recent version of Adobe Reader (which would be a good idea, as it probably fixes security problems with older versions) but you prefer the Preview-like behavior for PDF files in your Web browser, do the following:
    1) If you installed Adobe Reader "for all users", open the Library folder at the top-level of your boot volume.
    2) Open the Internet Plug-Ins folder within the library folder.
    3) You should see a file named "AdobePDFViewer.plugin".  If you see a folder named "Disabled Plug-Ins", drag the Adobe file to that folder.  Alternatively you can just move the file to the trash.  Modifying that folder may cause an authentication dialog to appear.  If you see that, enter your administrative password.
If you installed Adobe Reader for only the current user, then follow the above instructions, but with the Library folder within the user home folder for that user.
If you want to reverse this, just drag the plugin file back out of the "Disabled" folder.

You're right that that option is available.  I don't believe I'd ever opened Adobe Reader's preferences, so I was unaware of that.  In addition, there are so many options in Adobe Reader's preferences that it's hard to find that particular one.
Oddly, if that plugin file is moved manually, the option to "Display PDF in browser using" is grayed out, at least on my Mac.
I still preferred to be able to choose that option at installation.

  • How to download Adobe Reader to Macbook Pro OSX 10.7.5

I previously had no difficulty opening and downloading forms on the net and now I receive a message that I have to download Adobe Reader. I have downloaded it into the download section of finder several times and nothing happens and I still can't access the forms. What should I do now? Thanks

You have downloaded it, but have you installed it? In any case, if your difficulties persist, you can try downloading the full offline installer from

  • Large document hanging in Adobe Reader 11.0.10 / OSX Yosemite 10.10.2

I have a 777 page PDF which will open in Adobe Reader 11.0.10, but if I scroll or jump to a page mid-document Reader will hang and display the spinning beach ball indefinitely.  This PDF behaves normally in Windows, but locks up every time on my Mac.  Any advice on what to do?  I have Acrobat XI Pro so I can make changes, I just don't know where to start.
    Thanks.

    Hey Andy,
Please check if you face the same problem with some other PDF or this particular one.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Reader on your MAC?
    Hope to hear from you.

  • Rollback Adobe Reader version on Mac OSX 10.6

    Hello all,
I recently upgraded to Adobe Reader version 9.2. I use a drm software on my machine from Oracle that is not compatible with 9.2. I need to roll back to 9.1
I went into my applications folder and deleted Adobe Reader 9.2. searched for all recently updated Adobe foldered and deleted those as well. I emptied my trash can and restarted machine.
Whenever I try to install Adobe Reader 9.1 I get an error message that says "A new version of this software already exists on the disk" or something to that affect and it will not let me install 9.1.
Any suggestions or hidden files I should look for on my Mac? I really need 9.1 to view my drm material.

Just see if  /private/var/db/receipts/Adobe Reader 9.bom and  /private/var/db/receipts/Adobe Reader 9.plist are present. If they are delete them and reinstall. Hope this helps.

  • "The Installation Has Failed." How can I install Adobe Reader XI Pro on OSX 10.10.1?

I'm looking to test out Acrobat's OCR functionality (converting PDF to .docx format). I've successfully downloaded the installer (through the Adobe Downloader Assistant), but every time I attempt the installation, I see the following screen:
